A great way to start my day! Thanks so much, Chris, for showing us how you mix your paints. It was short, sweet and easy to understand. Your consistency test is the best! Be well.❤️
Fantastic video, I'm based in Scotland and have been finding getting the pouring medium in Scotland has not been easy, so I will try your recipe. Thank you again, so informative x ❤️
This is so helpful, I’m definitely going to try just pva and water PM. The Owatrol/Floetrols are so expensive I would rather not have to use them. Love your work 🤩
I have read mixed reviews on whether the PVA should be archival, as normal PVA is not ph neutral. I just wondered what your views were about that. Thanks.
Hi Lesley. It is a good question. I'm not an expert in this field but this is what I think. PVA glue and Floetrol are not archivable products as the are not 'official' art products. When you use 'official' art products like Liquitex, Golden etc, a lot of research has gone into these products and they are meant for art. So their durability, colour fastness etc have been researched extensively. I've only been pouring for 3 years which is a relatively short time. However, I have never experienced problems like yellowing or cracking. For me, it's the cost benefits of PVA which are substantial compared to art pouring mediums. I think it is down to personal choice. If I varnish, I do use an art varnish like Liquitex as it has an UV protector. I'm not sure if that fully answers your question but that is my thinking. 🙂
Hi Chris, I have recently found your channel. It’s great to find some English fluid artists! I am very much enjoying your videos. I have just tried the PVA and water pouring medium and I notice that the paint is starting to crack. I use Amsterdam and Pebeo paints most of the time. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Linda. That's unusual and frustrating for you. I've been using PVA and water for my pouring medium for almost 4 years. The only time I've had cracking is when I poured over a canvas that I had already poured on. The paint was really thick and most probably not fully cured. This was a few years ago. I have a couple of suggestions that may help you. What mix are you using for your pouring medium? I use 70% PVA to 30% water. I mix this with my paints and then add small amounts of water to get it to the consistency I want. Are you using non washable PVA? The PVA needs to be non washable. I've been usung No Nonsense PVA glue from Screxfix for quite a few years now. Are you leaving too much paint on your canvas? If the paint is either too thick or you leave too much on the canvas, then that can cause cracking. If when wet, the painting dries too quickly, then that can cause cracking. Sorry for the vagueness of my answers, there are so many variables involved. Let me know if that helps at all 🙂
Hello i'm from Portugal and I'd like to know how do you use Owatrol, and how do you mix it whith the paints, I alsow use glue anda water but i bought owatrol and it's to thick, can you help me? thank you
Hi Bela, I'm sorry I do not use Owatrol. Your best bet is to do a search on UA-cam under either "Owatol' or 'Floetrol" mixing paints. Mixed Media Girl has lots of good tutorials and she is always clear in her videos. I hope that helps x
If you are using just PVA glue are you not concerned about yellowing after time? I used to use pva but as I sell them I have moved to artist Acrylic binder. It is still quite expensive, 5 litres for £50 but supposedly archival. I have no idea about the longevity of pva, do you have any info?
Hi Kathy. Unfortunately I do not have any info about PVA causing yellowing. I use Liquitex varnish which has UV protector in it when I varnish my paintings which adds a level of protection x
Hi Monica. The Pebeo metallics are hungry beasts and do use lots of water compared to normal acrylics. I worked out the final ratio of water to paint/PM and it was made up of approximately 30% water x
@@ChrisSchneiderArt thanks so much for that information. I do find that metallics require more water. They even seem to thicken up just sitting there waiting to be used. 😩
By far the best video on this topic
Glad you found it helpful Tamara x
Excellent step-by-step explanation.
Thank you 🙂
So helpful. Thanks for sharing so much info.

Soooo interesting Chris! Thank you.

Thanks for this mixing video. I wasn't sure on the consistency before this.

That's great to hear Emma. Yes Owatrol/floetrol are very expensive in the UK. PVA glue works equally well and is a more cost effective solution x
Thank you so much, brilliant information and I've learned so much.
Hi Cat, I'm glad you found it helpful x
Thank you
You're welcome Linda x
Great explanation can I ask what is the brand of PVA glue please. I use Elmers school glue but would like to try yours
I'm based in the UK and currently buy my PVA glue from Screwfix. I've been using their 'No Nonsense" PVA glue which is approx £9.99 for 5 litres x

@@ChrisSchneiderArt Many thanks, I was pouring over a used canvas and using washable PVA glue! Will give your brand a go.
@@lindajenkinson1870 I hope that works out for you
This is great! Thank you for sharing. After you added the water did you happen to weigh it again to see how much you added?
Hi Donna. I worked out I added over the course of the mixing approx 30% water. I find the metallics are always thirsty x
Thank you Chris!
Thank you Chris. This is such a helpful video. Did you say that you use a non-washable PVA glue?
Yes, I use non-washable PVA glue x
@@ChrisSchneiderArt Hi Chris, may I know the brand of PVA glue that you are using? Most of the PVA glue selling in my area is washable.

Thanks Julie. I always use scales, it saves a lot of time for me x
Seems like that’s a LOT of water on the metallic! I wonder what your ratio of glue to water was that you ended up with.
