Please don't go in there. At 9:22 in I can see the red 'a' label on the purple wall confirming the presence of asbestos, let alone the visible asbestos debris I could see as you walked through the building. This was long before you mention it and say that must be why then left and left everything behind. Surely that's your cue to get the hell out, but no, you continue through the building risking exposure and probably took the dust home. the 'a' label on the dumb waiter, another at 11:09 after noticing plenty of gear here, confirms that is likely contaminated and you're walking through it. Downplaying the risk mentioning it can be in the ceilings won't keep you safe, the 'a' label is where it is. At last count asbestos was in over 4000 products and mentioned in over 15,000 patents. Any pre-2000 premises can containing it, so please stop and think before risking you, your family and friends inhaling fibres taken home on your clothes.
@@1974bazzaaaI often dream about that place, that it reopens as a grand cinema returning with its stars in the ceiling and I’m sitting in the stalls looking uo st those stars whilst waiting for the film to start! 😊
My lovely late husband who I lost 2 years ago worked here in 1973/4 when it was Baileys night club he was a doorman there and I was there myself for a few night outs with workmates saw a lot of good groups I don’t live in Oldham now I loved living and working in Oldham made good friends over the 16 years I had lived there ❤❤thanks
You’re right Jon. Would have loved to have seen the layout as I knew it from its various guises. Froggies, Romeo’s, Flies. Would love to walk round that dance floor one more time, trying to cop off.
The Grand Theatre and Opera House were largely demolished and rebuilt in 1937 as the Gaumont Cinema it has no reference to the Grand Theatre. It closed in 1961 to be reopened as Astoria Ballroom and bowling alley before the days of Baileys,Romeo & Juliet’s,Butterflies,Nix etc etc
Not much to see here. I would have liked to have seen the vastness of this former cinema, club etc,. All you showed is a few boring rooms. Could be anywhere. Not interesting at all.

I remember going in there when it was a great cinema, Baileys, and then Romeo and Juliet’s. Great memories of a once grand place!

it brought back some good memories for you
Went regularly when it was Baileys. Some great nights. I had my 18th birthday there.
It was called the Gaumont when I was a kid 65 years ago
Classic cinema name!

Not much grand left in Oldham these days
Possibly not, good to remember the history though?

You guys need better lighting as and when you can afford of course!!
I agree- have been looking. The big dark buildings need so much light! Going to try one of those square hand held LED lights I think.
This is what Oldham council does
Yeah they ruin it
