  • “There's finally a recognition that interoperability standards aren't a technical issue; they’re a ‘hearts and minds’ issue.” Oh, the healthcare data interoperability conversation is one that knows no borders - or time limits - but it seems like Australia has hit a crossroads in their 20-year data-sharing journey that we can call learn from.
Self-identified “Interoperability Standards Princesses” Kate Ebrill, Interoperability Lead at CSIRO, and Trish Williams, Cisco Chair & Professor of Digital Health Systems at Flinders University, deliver the most lively and entertaining interoperability standards update you’re likely to ever get anywhere in the world.
Their “Majesties” are ruling that “sexy” has come back to interoperability standards and there are two key reasons why. First, because the pandemic has led Australia’s various standards organizations to realize that they need to come together, and that they need to work with government on a national digital health strategy. Helpfully, there’s funding for that... Second, the utility of Australia’s National Health Record has evolved. Explains Kate, “When that started in 2010, it was about pushing documents and making documents available. Now, we really understand that we need the data, and we need to be able to have insights on that data.”
So, what’s ahead? New standards? Trish says no - and that the approach to “re-invent” standards has finally been dropped. “It’s more about, ‘how do we use them better...and in practice...and at-scale?’” Easier said than done? We chat through the “hot button” issues that all this collaboration is working through in real-time, and find out what these two experts feel is most obnoxious about where the conversation about interoperability is at today. By that same turn, what are they excited about? Did someone say “National FHIR Accelerator Program?” This whole chat is lit!
