  • A symbol of victory, honour, and peace. Often worn or placed to honour those who have passed and achieved heroic deed. The laurel wreath was used by the Ancient Greeks. It is a symbol of Apollo and the leaf itself was believed to have spiritual and physical cleansing abilities. Ancient Greeks awarded laurel wreaths to victors in the Olympics and poetic competitions. Laurel wreaths were worn on either the head or neck. Laurel wreaths were originally made from the bay laurel limbs and leaves. Later wreaths were made from butcher’s brooms, cherry laurel, and olive trees. In Rome the laurel
wreath was used to crown a successful commander. The laurel wreath symbol is interwoven branches shaped into a circle or horseshoe shape.
Laurel wreaths are still associated with academia. For the last two centuries in Rome, any student that has graduated receives a laurel wreath. Since 1900, in Mount Holyoke College graduates carry or wear laurel wreaths or chains. In Reed College, seniors get a laurel wreath after finishing their senior thesis. At St. Mark’s school, seniors who have completed three years of one language and two years of another are awarded a laurel wreath. In Sweden, honorary doctorates receive a laurel wreath, and in Finland master’s graduates are given a laurel wreath.
Today the laurel wreath is very much still symbolic of victory and peace and this ‘how to’ video tutorial has been requested by Margaret, who resides in England and has been given the task of making a memorial wreath for a special ceremony at her church. I thought this a wonderful opportunity to share how easy, but time consuming they are to make and thus ensure the skill isn’t lost forever!
    Things to gather:
    Laurel leaves or magnolia leaves
    22-gauge florist wire 14” long
    Floral tape
    Floral snips
    In victory and in honour!

Hello Kristie, I went at this project from every angle and almost drove myself demented in the process!!! It wasn't supposed to be so long but there was so much knowledge to share. In the end I just thought - 'just get on with it and it will be what it is'. Kind regards Astar

@@AstarsPlace lol well honey you are not by any stretch of the imagination, demented! Smart and funny...yes! I appreciate the way you allowed the viewers to see how much work does go into something like that. All arrangments or pieces of art, I believe, have meaning. Whether it is for any specific event or if it just has a personal meaning to the person that made it. But the wreath you made usually has a very specific representation of very specific events and it is recognized for its specific shape, form and style. You demonstrated the proper way to craft it, which is very important! So thank you, and like I've said before, you're a wonderful teacher!

Thank you for showing us how to do this. I always wondered how to join single leaves together and make them sturdy, so this is a great tutorial!

When you showed us how to bind the magnolia leaves and we all thought why do you need to bind a magnolia leaf behind! Thank you for showing us why you do and how much it improves it by putting the leaf there! 🥰 x

Hi there, that was a wee trick I learnt years ago. Not only does it give additional support, it also hides the wiring and makes everything look neat and tidy. I made that ages ago and now that it's all dried off I'm going to use the base for another project. I think I'll round it off and incorporate dried matters??? Take care and very warm wishes for a great NEW YEAR. 2022 has a nice ring to it. Astar

Hi Teresa, what a great idea. I have currently planted a hedge of bay and must say, I'm pleased with my idea. It tight, compact has the most delicious fragrance, plus it doesn't grow too quickly. I have a year round supply just waiting for a project. Keep you posted, Astar

    Hello,
Do you wash all your fabric as soon as you bring it into the house or do you wash it when you get ready to use it? Also do you sew around the edges or pinky shear it to keep it from fraying?

    • @AstarsPlace
      @AstarsPlace  3 роки тому

Hi there Donell, as soon as I buy fabric and get it home, it goes immediately into the washing machine and then the dryer. Once dry, it gets ironed and set aside until I'm ready to turn it into something. I have found that putting it into the dryer removes all worries of strinking once made. I don't bother with picking shears. I should but I don't because zigzag or the overlooking works a treat. Hope this helps. Kind regards Astar

Hi Christine, if you have time check out my imstagram @astarsplace I posted this wreath on Saturday and shared an image of it dried out and still gracing my front door. It dried out beautifully and I plan to reinvent it for a FALL celebration project. Found the wheat, poppy pods, gum nuts and honesty and can't wait to get it filmed. Very warm regards Astar
And yes I can do a gum leaf wreath. It's on my list.
