I remember thinking they could go on a have a real dynasty. Anyone who went into that squad just looked better. They were basically barcelona before barcelona. But it just crumbled one player at a time. No replacements for leadership. Bad top level decision making. Such a shame and missed opportunity.
The other teams got more professional too. Wenger changed Arsenals players from Eggs and Jack Daniels for breakfast to Rice and Vegetables. Even Manchester United the long time dominant team werent the same (Blanc and Barthez smoking in the toilets at half time, Roy Keanes drinking) etc. But the other teams noticed and copied the professionalism and then Wenger had little else if anything to show. Thats why they won so much in the first 7 years from 98-05 and in the next 14 years won not even half the amount. They also had solid ownership back then and directors who were not counting every penny and they were willing to splash out big wages to make sure a player like Campbell joined them instead of Man Utd or Barcelona.

At the same time, top managers can't just go to Notts County and turn them into PL Champions on their ability alone, they need that big of money.

Can’t believe I’m now 26 and we haven’t won the league since this. Fell in love with football watching this team.
