I just bought this amp 10 minutes ago. I've been in love with it forever, it's renowned for it's clean channel and it's overall character. My tone snob friends weren't familiar with it, until I showed them this demo. The dirty leads are great, but what made them say "yeah buy this right now" was the clean channel. In 8 days, I have this amp, partially thanks to you giving such a diverse and beautiful demonstration of everything this amp can do. I wouldn't have taken the jump to buy my dream amp without this video. Thank you!!!
Dave DeWhitt Thanks for your reply! It means a lot coming from the guy who has the best Bogner Shiva demo on UA-cam. There are a few of these types of demos on here, the comments section sends everyone to this video. 👍
@@DaveDeWhitt I got it yesterday, just got back from my friends ranch where we could really push it.... I'm blown away. My two buddies who are also decent guitar players were blown away. They were on the phone with their music friends saying "this is the greatest amp I've ever heard". We ran a Strat and a Les Paul into this thing tweaking around and you couldn't possibly get a bad tone out of this amp. All we used was a tubescreamer at times (set pretty low), and a Boss DD-8 delay. Best amp ever.
@@mattlawson714 I would like to know now after 2 years how you feel about the Shiva. Its so unfamiliar when we first get a new amp so its like the honeymoon phase of a new relationship. Now that you've shown her off to all your friends and a few of them have played with her too what do you think of her lol?
@@independentinstallations8419 I still love that amp! I wish there was a mids control on the clean channel but it’s nothing an EQ pedal can’t fix, the reverb on it is great, it even works pretty well at bedroom volumes if I boost it with my klon clone! It’s a great amp.
good demo, single coils and humbuckers, a 24.75 scale and two 25.5 scales. that is how you demo an amp folks! this demo actually made me like this amp a little more, its always been a one trick pony to me
Hi Frank. Thanks! Sadly, I didn't do a whole lot of recording with the Shiva when I had it. I loved the amp, but it was a beast and very heavy, and I ended up swapping it for a smaller Bogner Atma, which has turned out to be the amp I always wanted. I used the Atma and a Tele to record all the electric parts on a friend's EP, his name is Paul Zotter and the EP is called Sentimental if you want to check it out. I think the Atma and the Shiva were similar in the types of tones they achieved, but the more I have it, the more I think the Atma (clean tone especially) is the best I've ever heard. Both are killer though!
+Christopher Wilkerson Hi, thanks! Yes, this combo did have the stock Celestion Lead 80. I have a good friend who has the silver chassis model, and he put a creamback 75w speaker in his which sounds fantastic. I never got around to updating mine so this video was stock.
+Dave DeWhitt thanks! I have a silver back EL34 head with the matching 1x12 cab, which also has a CL80, & I've been toying with the idea of a speaker swap, but then a demo love i.e. yours comes along and I think naw, I'm good. ;-)
hi, great demo, how does the drive channel react with boost/overdrive pedals for extra sustain for soloing? & what about the effects loop with delay stompboxes
Hi +Amr Fathy - Great question! I find that both channels are really great with pedals. A boost on the dirty channel is great, and I also got some good results with compression on the dirty channel (I tried it with an MXR Dynacomp, and also a Keeley 4 knob comp - both great compressors). Another really great tone here that I didn't demo is an OD pedal on the clean channel. The Shiva clean channel is a fantastic platform for pedals, because it's such a beautiful tone, and it has so much headroom. I have an OCD overdrive that kills through the clean side, and a friend of mine was just over the other night, and we put his Earthquaker Devices Crimson Drive in tandem with a Barber Half Gainer pedal, and the two of those together on the clean channel were just screaming - sustain for days! The effects loop is great too. I have my Strymon El Cap in the loop, and I've also tried a TC Nova Repeater and a Line6 DL4 in the loop, and they sounded great.
Thank you for the helpful feedback .. the thing is somebody is selling the old version (late 90s) Shiva 1*12 combo with EL34s (has no reverb), price is tempting (less than 1000 USD), & i read in several forums about an effects loop problem that requires special cable for the amp "send" has hot signal that not all stomboxes can handle ... moreover i know this ain't a high gain amp, so i was wondering how it handles boost/overdrive on the Drive Channel as i love creamy sustained overdriven lead tone for solos since i mostly play prog rock, blues & classic rock
+Amr Fathy Yes, I am familiar with the effects loop quirk on the older models, and I have a friend who has a 2005 model that does require the special cable. I believe once you have that cable, everything is good, and if it helps, I know it is possible to make that cable if the one you are looking at doesn't have it included. Bottom line, I probably wouldn't let that stop me if the price is right. This model that I demo'd is a 2006, so it doesn't actually require anything special for the loop. The flip side is that the older (silver chassis) models are supposed to be a little better-sounding than the newer traffic green chassis models. I read somewhere the Reinhold Bogner didn't want to add reverb to these amps because of the impact to the tone (and the reverb really does suck some of the tone, and definitely hits the perceived volume pretty hard), so those older models without reverb are maybe a little better-regarded by some folks for that reason. Also, you are right that this is not a high gain amp. The Shiva hits my sweet spot because I love classic rock tones, but for higher gain options it might be best to look elsewhere.
Actually u r convincing me more to get that amp, very few videos here does it justice, & it seems that an OCD pedal in front of the drive channel along with some delay in the loop can do very sweet lead sounds. I am not much of a high gain user, i just wanna be sure i can get plenty of sustain in my solos. By the way, what do u think about the price ... a new one would cost over 2000 USD to get here in United Arab Emirates, so do u think 900 - 1000 USD is a fair price for almost 15 yr old amp that gigs clubs most week days
Seems like a good price to me for sure. Do you have the opportunity to play it before you buy it? I think this amp would be great for gigs from a tone and versatility perspective, but one drawback for gigs is definitely the weight. I'm not 100% positive how heavy the older ones are, but mine is just shy of 70 lbs/31kg.
Hey Dave! Guitar Center has a used Shiva combo (212) with 6l6 tubes for $1200. Do you know anything about the differently tubed shiva- should I take the plunge?
Hi Andrew, regarding the tubes, I think the best info on that comes right from the Bogner website: "The 80 watt EL34 has a tighter sound on the low end and more midrange. Perfect for that classic British rock tone with it's aggressive bite. The 60 watt 6L6 versions have a rounder low end and a touch more high end extension. The 6L6 is great for bluesy, rootsy players. Since the 6L6 has less watts it will tend to compress the low end sooner while the EL34 will stay a bit tighter longer." I'm sure the 6L6 version sounds great, but it depends on the style you will be playing. The only reservation I'd have about the 2x12 is that it's 74 lbs. The 1x12 was a back-breaker for me and it came in at 68 lbs. If you will be moving it a lot for gigs, etc., that is definitely a consideration! Let me know if you end up buying it.
Dave DeWhitt Thanks so much for the reply, and for your keen insight. My style is very blues-rock so it seems like the amp would be perfect. The weight would be an issue, though, definitely. Because it's so cheap, I almost want to get it and rehouse the head into a separate cab, but that may be more trouble than it's worth.

Thanks, James. It is a seriously killer amp. You won't be disappointed!

putting a compressor in front of the clean channel is a great tip for shiva owners
You are a terrific player. Wish I could do all that!
Thank you, James, that's very kind of you to say. Cheers!
Great demo!

imo the bogner 112 cab with CL80 is the best match for the Shiva EL34.
