Great repotting Ana. Even though I’m not a huge fan of columnar cacti, I have to say that one is quite attractive. You did a great job considering you did it mostly on your own, but well done to your son for giving you a helping hand ☺️ When you said that one had scale I thought oh nooooo, luckily that’s one pest I’ve not had to deal with yet. Look great potted up in their new home, more room for them to breathe 😊 Thank you for sharing Ana, have an awesome upcoming new week 👍🏻🌵☀️

Finally purchased a tiny tiny one maybe the height of my pinky and it seemed expensive but all the other ones I saw were even more. I went grocery shopping for my parents at walmart today and found one pot that had maybe 5 in them in a 5" pot and way taller for less $9!🙌 I'm so excited to start this one journey and will probably need to repot these so I don't get scales either. So glad for this video. Thank you so much! You have a great little helper there too 😊

Good job catching and addressing the scale. They are a huge problem with columnar cacti. They usually happen when your cactus is kept in a high humid, high heat environment.
Thank you so much for the tips! Yep, that’s the only time (so far) I had scale on my cactus. But I’m happy that it recovered and all the columns in this pot are still alive and has almost doubled their height. ☺️
@@CactusCaffeine👍 YW! I was VERY much impressed with what you created in your video. I have one of these fence posts and a small pot with a cluster of smaller ones. I have been learning a lot about these columnar cacti. They greatly benefit from roomy pots and will grow MUCH faster in larger pots than being confined in a small pot. If you move your plant inside seasonally, it is less likely to get that skinny growth if it is in dormancy (cold). It's when they become active (warm) again in a low light area that they do this. If temps creep up and get warmer, be sure to increase its light exposure. Also, any plant you treat for pests is best treated after sunset to avoid sun burn. The mixture will dry overnight and be gone by the next morningI have seen MANY experienced cacti growers scar their beautiful cacti by treating them and then leaving them in the sun.
One of my 6ft Mexican Fence Posts fell over in yesterday’s storm. I’m going to try your ideas to trim bottom at break and replant.🙏🏼 Im interested in your gloves, can you reply with info where I might find a pair. Thanks for your UA-cam!
Hi Kerry! I find cactus easy to care for as they are very hardy. Since you have a big greenhouse, I’m sure you can grow them easily, too. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! ☺️🌵☕️
What a beauty that Mexican fence cacti is! I couldn't believe how easily you separated the pot from the 🌵. I would have struggled like I normally do with big cactus plants. Is your pergola newly built? It's totally awesome. Loved the 2 new homes for the cacti and you placed the pots just right. That was another great video, Ana. 👏🧡☺️❤️🥰👍🙏👏
It took a lot of kicking to get it out of the pot. Lol! 🤣 Part of me just wanted to get an ax and chop the cactus. 😁 Our pergola was assembled a few months ago. My husband and his friends worked on it.
Terrific video! Live in West Hollywood and just bought my first fence post cactus. Thanks to your video, I successfully transplanted it into its new home and I’m fairly confident that it will be very happy there! You made it look so easy and you took the anxiety out of a process I knew nothing about. Thank you! Will afternoon direct sun bother this cactus? Morning shade until about 2 and then sunny spot until about 6. There are three in the pot: 1, 2, and 4 ft tall. Thank you!!
Hi Anna, Thank you for this great video! I just now potted my columnar cactus cutting. how do I know when to start watering it? It is a very high cutting, about 3 feet Hight.
When your soil is completely dry, water it lightly at first. If your cutting shows signs of getting plump, that is an indication that it has rooted. You may start watering deeply using the soak and dry method.
I live in Cochise county Arizona, we are at 4600 feet, we get freezes, and about 3"-12" of snow per year. Will this Mexican fence post cactus survive these winter conditions? If I planted it in my front yard do I have to cover the tips of it during the harsh winter?
Yes, the tips definitely have to be covered every winter. We get occasional snow but not as much as you do. If you have a freeze protection blanket, it might be a good idea to wrap the whole cactus with it, instead of protecting just the tips. 🙂
@@CactusCaffeine ooooh man. That seems like a big pain. They would be at the front of the property and we have 5 acres, to have to cover them all winter long worrying about the winds blowing the covers off 😩. Do you know of a cactus that is similar to those i mentioned that will resist freezing and snow so I don't have to cover them?
I know some Opuntias such as Opuntia humifusa can survive being buried in snow. Apart from Opuntias, I’m sorry but I don’t have experience nor seen a cactus that every year gets consistent snow.
It has survived 2 winters but I do wrap it in frost blanket every time we get a hard freeze or snow warning. Thank you for watching and welcome! CHEERS! 🌵☕️☺️
One of my neighbors has a few Mexican fence posts. I like how tall they get. They're like the cactus version of cypress. Was that mixture you used for the scales specific to cactus treatment or plants in general? Your son is such a cutie and a brave planty helper! 💚🌵🌞
That's one big cactus family. How long did it take for the 'babies' to get to the size they are? 🤔 Fast growing cacti are an awesome challenge. Take your attention off them and they'll surprise you
I know this was years ago, but do you know what size that pot with the two cuttings was? I'm looking at getting a 2 foot cutting and thought that may be a good pot size
So Ana, is it a general rule that columnar cacti that are growing funny (fat at the bottom, skinnier and skinnier on top) are not getting enough water? I have a Peruvian Apple Cactus that is growing exactly that way and I can't really figure it out. I've also left it in the nursery pot for the last 1.5 years and it's nearing 3 feet tall now....
Cactus can grow skinny on top when it lacks sunlight. It is when they etiolate (stretch) trying to reach for the sun. That is another reason besides lack of water.
@@CactusCaffeine Ah. Mine's on my screened porch and perhaps it's been needing more full sun instead of the filtered light it's been getting all summer. Thanks a lot, Ana!
Love the Mexican Fence Post cactus! Did you water the cactus after you transferred them or did you leave them dry? I'm about to repot some cactus and I read somewhere not to water them after a few days of transferring them. Just wondering if that is what you did. Thanks.
Bree Lawrence oooh, I hope mine does not come back. So far, my cactus is still free of them. Fingers (and toes) crossed. 😉 Thank you, Bree! Have an awesome day. ☕️☕️

I just googled the treatment for scales. It is for plants in general. It is actually the same solution used for mealy bugs, too. 🙂
Really sweet Shadow doggi too....mine r so wonderful also.they are a tresure....Children so wo derful.of coarsetoo gift fr G-....🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
That's one big cactus family. How long did it take for the 'babies' to get to the size they are? 🤔 Fast growing cacti are an awesome challenge. Take your attention off them and they'll surprise you
The babies took 2 years to get to that size. They may even be way taller by now if I repotted this last year. 🙂🌵☕️
I know this was years ago, but do you know what size that pot with the two cuttings was? I'm looking at getting a 2 foot cutting and thought that may be a good pot size
The pot diameter I believe was 6 inches. 🙂
What nursery did you buy these at in LV? Was it left out in full sun and heat to get the scarring or did that still happen in shade?
Yours dog's name is very good Shadow
🐶 thanks!
Were the scales pests, as in bugs?
Yep. Scales are bugs as well.
I have two cactuses am having trouble finding the name of them

Hi and thank you! Cheers! ☕️
Love the Mexican Fence Post cactus! Did you water the cactus after you transferred them or did you leave them dry? I'm about to repot some cactus and I read somewhere not to water them after a few days of transferring them. Just wondering if that is what you did. Thanks.
I have scale on 1 of my plants and they are persistent little boogers
Bree Lawrence oooh, I hope mine does not come back. So far, my cactus is still free of them. Fingers (and toes) crossed. 😉 Thank you, Bree! Have an awesome day. ☕️☕️
@@CactusCaffeine I'm happy to hear that and have a awesome evening as well.😀
Hello from Ken in Japan another great video
Play with shadow, multitask!
😄 🐶
It wants to go into the ground.
I actually planted the babies in the ground in one of my Desert gardens. I hope they grow very tall. That would be cool to see. 🙂
Hi tanong ko po kng nagkakaroon ba sya ng bulaklak?
Vivian Sandajan yes, it flowers but it has to be very old and tall before it does. Sa akin, wala pa po. 🙂

you had a nice big cactus, you had to wait many years to grow it so big, now you made it small again. too bad
