Schmitz, the Queen of the Nurburgring, was a familiar face on British television due to her spell on the BBC's Top Gear over the years, first appearing on the show back in 2004
Top Gear and German racing legend Sabine Schmitz has tragically passed away aged 51 after a long battle with cancer.
Schmitz, known as the Queen of the Nurburgring, was a familiar face on British television due to her spell on the BBC's flagship motor racing show over the years.
The TV star first appeared alongside Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May back in 2004 and retained a recurring role throughout various iterations of the show over the years.
She became an instant hit with fans after racing a Ford Transit van around the Nurburgring in an attempt to get under the 10 minute mark; a feat she missed out on by just eight seconds.
Last year Schmitz - the only female winner of the 24 Hours of Nurburgring - revealed she had been secretly battling cancer since 2017, having been forced to pull out of a racing event at the last minute.
Nurburgring, the iconic German racing track which is regarded as one of the most challenging circuits in motorsport, revealed the tragic news of her death on Wednesday morning.
A statement read: "The Nurburgring has lost its most famous female racing driver.
"Sabine Schmitz passed away far too early after a long illness. We will miss her and her cheerful nature. Rest in peace Sabine!"
Former Top Gear presenter Clarkson led the tributes, writing on Twitter: "Terrible news about Sabine Schmitz. Such a sunny person and so full of beans."In a gut-wrenching post on social media last year, Schmitz explained that her absence from the Nurburgring Endurance Series race, despite being on the entry list, was due to her battle with cancer.
She wrote: "Dear friends of professional motor sport.
"Many of you have probably wondered why I was on the list of participants on our Porsche in the NSL and then didn’t drive after all.
"I would like to provide enlightenment here, I think I owe it to my/our fans!
"Since the end of 2017, I have been fighting an extremely persistent cancer that has not been eliminated with the resources so far. It got a little better - but now it’s come back with full force.
"Now I have to draw all the strength and nerve to master the next powerful therapies … hoping something [good] will happen. So I say goodbye 'probably' for the first time this season.
"In addition, I would like to thank everyone for their help and support in my everyday life, and encouragement in writing!
"So sweethearts, now you have an update. Please stay healthy and cheerful, see you at the ‘Ring.”
This Sunday's episode of Top Gear will be dedicated to the German racing driver.
Clare Pizey, Top Gear's executive producer, said in a statement on behalf of the Top Gear team: "Sabine was a beloved member of the Top Gear family and presenting team since 2016, having first appeared on the show in 2004, and everyone who had the pleasure of working with her on the team is in shock at this news.
"The 'Queen of the Nurburgring', Sabine radiated positivity, always wore her cheeky smile no matter how hard things got - and was a force of nature for women drivers in the motoring world.
"Like everyone else who knew her, we will truly miss her - Sabine really was one of a kindOur thoughts are with her partner Klaus who was always by her side and who we welcomed to Dunsfold many times, and her family in Germany."
Schmitz grew up within the boundaries of Germany's iconic race track and earned the nickname "Queen of the Nurburgring" after estimating she completed more than 20,000 laps of the track.

Normally I'm not that bothered about celebrities that die but when i heard about Sabine i was genuinely very sad that someone so full of life and inspiration had her life cut short by cancer. I'm a man and she inspired me and other men alike 🇬🇧🇩🇪

Same here. I think mainly it’s because she was so inspirational to so many people. I didn’t watch the later Top Gear shows after the Clarkson trio left but will never forget that line “I can beat that time in a van”. Always smiling, so full of life, seemed to be enjoying every minute and looked so healthy right up to the end, and then...gone. So cruel and unfair.
@@kjcsomerville So many of her videos are popping up in my feed and a lot are in German and i turn the subtitles on as i dont speak German which i never do and it makes me think this Woman took bends at 200mph and put herself at risk most days and more than any of us ever will and yet she didnt lose her life to any dangers she faced on a track but to a disease that took both my parents but they were old and in 60/70s and not driving at crazy speeds shortly before they died.
@@yesman2755 That was classic Sabine and even as a Clarkson fan i wanted her to beat his Jaguar. I also have never watched Top Gear since they showed solidarity and left and i will probably never watch a whole episode but i know that Sabine has appeared on the show so if its pops up I'll watch it just to see her lovely bubbly personality and amazing driving ability.

Sabine genuinely seemed to be wonderful at everything she did, both behind the wheel and in public, for once I'm more than happy to believe she was the same in her personal life without a second thought, what a beautiful soul RIP.
I don’t understand German but still I’m welling up with the loss of such a great person.
In brief she thanked all her well-wishers, from F1 drivers to ordinary people. She said that other people were worse off than her.
She's a great woman who will never be forgotten.

I’m really broken up over this. She was wonderful to speak to and I remember the first time she drove me in the taxi in the late 90’s. Very sad to have heard this 🤦♂️
I just watched a clip from inside her car on the ring where it appears she started from the back and passed every car on the track in one lap. Phenomenal driver.
Must have been the same video I watched..... It was just breathtaking..... I could watch her drive anything ...... Sad loss to all us who knew her....

I have seen her at the Ring when she got out of her taxi: she was such a sweet person to her customers. I'll remember her for her sweet smile and the positive effect she had on people.
Yeah, same, back in 2007, full of laughs and smiles, and even though she was busy she was happy to be photographed. It makes it so much harder to take when you've met these people and they're even more lovely than you imagined.

Met her twice at her mothers hotel. such a down to earth person We will always miss you as you were a delight to talk to. every fan is missing you.
I used to say rest in peace. But this sounds like a definite end. After my father died I started to realize that death is just a transition. In the weeks after his death he was more present than ever. From that moment I knew that death is only the beginning of the next phase in your path of growth. Sabine, I wish you a safe journey and lot's of love in your new world.

Im gonna say it, greatest woman to ever live. What an inspiration always laughing, always giving advice, always thinking of positive sides of negative things and most importantly always racing. I knew she existed before her death but i never really looked at her stuff but when she died it hit me very, vert hard. And even thiugh ife never been a fan or mever really stood up to her i miss her. I saw her the first time when she tried to teach Clarkson to drive fast around Nurburgring, and i remember that her bubbling joy caught me at once and made a big impression on me (not to mentioning that she totaly owning the track)

It pulled at my heart & filled my eyes w/tears, but I still watched it several times over. Although I'm 81 yrs old, the accomplishments & the courage of this women has challenged me to do something more in my life.

@@souhail8368 my dream was to be in her m5 once for a ringtaxi lap on the nordsleiffe , when corona is over im going to do it .. im going to make that lap and experience it in real life for the last 15+ years that nordsleiffe was in racing games nordsleiffe was my favorite track i learned to drive it faster watching all kinds of videos thats when i learned about her around 2004 when she appeared on top gear the first time
