- METALLICA Is a FAKE METAL BAND! Here's why....they really started as a punk rock group in the early 80's. There's clear evidence of this in the way Lars plays drums and also their guitar riffs. To illustrate this very important stylistic origin of Metallica, we'll be checking out their track, "Phantom Lord" live! Let me know what you think of this track. Is Metallica firing on all cylinders right now?

They were never considered thrash. DRI is the epitome of thrash metal. If it doesn't remind you of DRI, it's not thrash. You would've been mocked by the 80's metal stoner kids with all the thrash bands written on their Vans for saying Metallica is a thrash metal band. The reason Anthrax gets to use the thrash title is because of the SOD/MOD connection. Early Testament is thrashy.
Metallica and Megadeth were never thrashy even though neither Dave nor James could sing like Bruce. All 3 bands were too rhythmic to be considered thrash by the metal stoner kids of the 80's - all 3 followed the contemporary rules, no thrash bands did. They were called heavy metal bands and they started using the thrash label to advertise because the millenial kids rejected the heavy metal label.
The millenials then relabeled the heavy metal bands as power metal out of respect, but, because power metal requires insane technical ability, the heavy metal bands started using the thrash title after seeing the ability of the band that is the epitome of power metal, Dragonforce...
James just under 60 years old (59) and his voice is really kicking ass lately. He's got a bigger range than I think he's probably ever had, and he's sounding great. And of course he's still one of the best rhythm guitarists of all time. Not to mention how healthy and great he looks. Keep it up Papa Het!!
it's all the penii he puts in down his throat. soothes the vocal chords. i would know.
All that you had said. It's not even close.
You need to hear more music and bands around, thats for sure.
@@drakonolus7922 How is it that all I said isn't even close? He is, undeniably, a great rhythm guitarist. That can't really be debated regardless of how you feel about Metallica as a whole. His voice sounds great for all the abuse it went through over the years and he can still sing pretty well. He's got more control and knows how to pace himself better than he used to. He looks great for his age especially considering past drug/alcohol abuse. And he is in fact 59 years old. And for the record I listen all kinds of music all day long
try listening to Testament and Exodus and then tell me what you think of Metallica.
@@southfloridadriving I like both Testament and Exodus. At least their older stuff, not sure if they've released anything more recently. But that doesn't meant I have to dislike Metallica. Especially since Kirk literally formed Exodus. Why am I not allowed to also like Metallica, on top of all the other wide variety of bands I listen to?
James is actually 60 next year! And Kirk just turned 60 last week. Damn impressive that they’re still killing it live
Why? You think at 60 they should be in wheel chairs and calling people "sonny" ?
@@KepperKleen how did you reach that odd conclusion? 60 is by no means old, but they are playing quite physically demanding music on stage for several hours a night so I’m saying it’s very impressive they they still sound so good playing this type of music at their age. Pretty straight forward comment
@@andyk2607 oh i see, sorry i misunderstood. tee hee oopsie doodle.
Scientific research suggests the notion of your 60s being "old" in the societal understanding of it is just a construct. You don't change significantly, body/healthwise until your 70s. So, if they can eat healthy, exercise, and get enough sleep, there is no reason why Metallica shouldn't be able to perform at this level for another decade.
@@GeekFurious I agree. They’ve gone on record to say they’ll keep going until they can no longer physically play all of their material
I love how you can hear the bass. James's voice has gotten better, for a long time it was blown out. He must have been taking singing lessons and using his voice differently instead of just belting it out like he did in the 80's.
James' vocals are Level 666 lately, the boys out there killing it in 2022 muahahahaha
Is it that is vocals have improved or technology for live shows has improved? He's using autotune.
@@NPK476 James is probably the last person to use autotune.
@@nou7911 lol look at all thes old bands, you think they improve with age or assistance? James has been cheating with his vocals since 1994 when the entire band downturned to fit his voice. He's in showbusiness, it's what performers do.
@@nou7911 No the very last person to use auto tune is T Pain so far
@@nou7911 they do use autotune. You can hear it but it is subtle. If only rob has some autiotune...
'Kill 'Em All' is my fav Metallica album. The best release was the 1988 Electra version with 'Blitzkrieg' and 'Am I Evil?' finishing off the sides. I wish the Blackened repressings were done like this.
I love all the Metallica tunes co-written with Mustaine.
Funny but they were always my least favourite, jump in the fire is my least favourite Metallica song out of all of them
@@deletedhero5579 Mustaine's addition to Kill'em all are the best songs. The Four Horsemen, Phantom Lord and Metal Militia are the best tracks on that besides Anesthesia. Without those songs Kill'em all would be pretty lame. Seek and Destroy and No Remorse are awesome tracks as well but Hit the Lights, Motorbreath are not so good. Whiplash is pretty good as well.
@@Albee213 That's your opinion and that's fair enough but for me personally I could easily lose all those songs except Four horsemen. I much preferred James's writing on that album. Dave wrote better in Megadeth but his writing in Metallica never impressed me too much. Phantom Lord and metal militia are okay but they'd be at the bottom of my list on that album and jump in the fire is a song I just never liked. Again personally.
To add to this...'Call of Ktulu' rules *hard*.
Correction, written By Mustaine. Metallica would have been nothing without him.
Metallica will always be metal even the load and reload era the concerts were epic.
Thrash metal is heavily influenced by Punk rock, even a Heavy Metal band like Motorhhead was very influenced by Ramones and you know James loved Motorhead. During the 80's Heavy metal and Thrash also influenced Punk, that's the way genres such as Hardcore punk and many others (Crossover, D Beat, Crust, just to name a few) were born
Yep, motor head wasn't even heavy metal. It was just pure rock n roll played faster and louder. Lemme himself said that.
I’m a Motörhead diehard and thrash guy. Motörhead is not metal. They play rock n roll. And are the greatest!
James is 59yo. I was in the Snake Pit with meet & greet passes in 1992 & sat at a table alone with James after the show! He was very receptive to having a conversation, with a fellow musician, about anything but music!
Love your channel. The content is quite entertaining, and you have a very cool personality, Shred. Long live Metal.
I'm really looking forward to this new album. The gigs they've been doing the last couple years have been brilliant! If Big Papa Hets on his game then it forces the rest of the band to keep up.
The best they've been since the 90's, looking inspired and on form, let's hope the writing is as well 🤞👌
Scientific fact, Hetfield sounds 20% better with a stash
im a loyal fan of both metallica and megadeth i hate how people say metallica is better than megadeth if i had to choose it would be hard between megadeth and metallica the only true reason why metallica got soo big is when they stole ideas from dave mustaine if it were not for daves lyrics metallica would not be where they are at today plus you gotta listen to megadeths 00s albums they are amazing system has failed was awesome as was st anger but metalllica only got big and famous is due to dave mustaines lyrics he told them straight up dont use my stuff they never gave dave a second chance hired a new guitarist behind his back then kicking him out dick move total dick move theoly albums lars is good are kill'em all ride the lightning master of puppets and of course and justice for all everything after that he was beyond terrible the oly good albums he did good on after those probably some spots on black reload some spots on load he did make a comeback on death magnetic and its follow up but still lars is kinda good these days
listen dude i love metallica to death even st anger but dude their not like megadeth
@@thereturnofdarthcaedus wtf u talking about? Dave is credited for all of 6 Metallica songs, and basically all of them were altered on kill em all after he was kicked out. He had nothing to do with any of the songs(one, mop, fade to black, enter sandman, nothing else matters, fwtbt, etc) that made Metallica the biggest metal band ever. Also, if Dave is so great(hes good but I mean, come on)why didn't his band ever blow up like metallica did if he is the reason they did?
@@chill0141414 whats lars and james did to dave was wrong you know it to megadeth is a far better band than metallica plus when dave was kicked out of the band he told them straight up not to use his musuc but they didnt care
@@chill0141414 metallica use to be good until they kicked dave out of the band hiring another guitarist behind his back and using his music dick move dick move kirk is not as good tho daves a way better guitarist than kirk
To be fair, “metal” was barely even a thing when Metallica released kill ‘em all. Pretty sure most people still considered them “punk”. Black Sabbath was considered “Blues Rock”. Even Kiss was considered punk. It wasn’t until the early 80’s that the term “metal” or “metal head” even became popular. In which Black Sabbath was retroactively labeled heavy metal. But pretty sure it was Iron Maiden and that whole generation that made it popular. The more you know…
That's ridiculous , Sabbath with Dio was pure metal and so was Maiden and Priest!
They actually considered themselves Power Metal.
@@mikeg6666 yes, for sure. But even though the genre was born, the term wasn’t coined yet. The term started being used circa 71’, became more popularly used late 70’s early 80’s, and even then it was common to interchange certain genres of metal and rock as punk. Not saying the bands weren’t metal, just saying the lines were a lot more blurry back then.
@@IndependenceGuitar You're right to a certain degree but Metallica's music wasn't considered heavy metal it called thrash , along with Slayer , Exodus , Anthrax etc. I knew the term metal when bands like Priest released British Steel and Maiden came out with Number of the Beast. Like I said earlier we called the Dio era of Sabbath metal. Metallica didn't come along until 82-83 and was always considered thrash metal....
KI$$ considered a punk band??!! 😂 They were and have always been a theatrical heavy pop/rocknroll band
I was at this concert and holy shit was it amazing to hear them play their older stuff, they only played songs from KTA and RTL. You should really look at Call of Ktulu from this concert if you haven't already
Hasn't every band been influenced by multiple genres? Inspiration has to be born somewhere. Solid point on the punk influence! Happy Thanksgiving. Liked and subscribed!
Someone who is a fan of Classical music and ambient in a metal band will automatically draw things from that because the structure is familiar to them!
As a fellow theory guy, how do you feel about the Beato Book?
Never thought about punk influence. Just shows how art evolves
James once said "We loved punk music, but it needed more musicianship to it... so we added some."
@@Fister_of_Muppets cool. Didn't know that. So interesting how they made their own sound from various genries. I had no idea since shreds video. Never even thought that was a thing. But makes complete sense. And also is a beacon of what new artist should be doing. I mean its the same with all form ls of art to be honest. I just never saw the link before. And never even thought it was a thing
is this supposed to be satire or something? they were influenced by earlier bands and what was played on the radio that does not mean they are fake very much had their own path style and ability to play and write unique lyrics as they matured and particularly when cliff burton came along, plus master of puppets was picked for historical preservation
cry harder.
It was a bad joke but you still missed it
@@NarfireVA not really that's why I asked
I have to say, if your goal was to get people to click the video with this kind of title, you succeeded in getting me to click! Lol Anyway, I enjoyed this, “Phantom Lord” is one of those songs that make you feel like you can confidently play it but it’s probably more challenging than it looks. It’s one of those “make you pick up your guitar” kind of songs.
I like when bands own up to their own mistakes, too. Depends on the show, though. Cool that you mention Babymetal and I look forward to your video on that! They do make some mistakes live but they’re the kind of band that works through them since, as you say, there are backing tracks, samples and synths going by. There are actually entire reels of them making mistakes on UA-cam. Given they’re one of those bands that can’t be as off the cuff live, they handle it professionally. I’ve seen them live and they put on a pretty fantastic show.
Metallica doesn't use Samples and Syths, dumbass!
"Johnny Ramone - lots of downpicking, just fast downpicking; that helped develop my style. So kind of a combination of punk rock and heavy rock at the time turned into the downpicking style with melody along with it."/James Hetfield
And the dowpicking in Misfits: ua-cam.com/video/QaM4BPJBuRg/v-deo.html
That clean interlude sounds like a precursor to the one's on Death Magnetic.
the interlude is Mustaine's
This flipping off is just hilarious 😂 Fantastic content, Scott 😁
how to tune the guitar for that LP?
@7:48 I've never realized in my 69 years of listening to these guys that this bridge really does lay a foundation for their latter sound in the following years post KEA, aka MUH BEST ALBUM (to some). Very neat to have these breakdowns, Shred!
Is it just me or is the intro basically Ace of Spades
I don't think I've ever heard Roberts bass so clear and in the forfront before. Amazing
I feel it's more the journalists that think up names like punk and metal than the artists that create the awesome noise we all love.
Mix in a little Angel Witch & Sabbath with that punk = Metallica 🖤 - (not often will I admit it - but I have to side with Lars here - That 8 count sounded really awkward… But after a minor false start the mighty Metallica came right through… Fantastic Band… Always true professionals to the band and especially the fans 🖤🎸🖤
The era which we were in at the time is called Crossover, from which Corrosion of Conformity, B'LAST, DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, Cro-Mags, SOD, Gang Green, Antidote, Poison Idea among others arose.
didnt spend any money on some metallica stuff for years but I would buy his DVD. they pulled off their best set list EVER in their 60s. weird times to be alive, man. Slayer retired and Metallica is in their second prime.
I love this tune. Takes me way back. Unfortunately, I recently watched a channel that somewhat tainted my appreciation for this song. The breakdown riff is THE SAME as the signature riff/chord progression in, Sweet Home Alabama by Lynard Skynyrd. I'm sure are and have been aware of this...but I honestly never realized it because the style and time of the riff is and comes across so differently (in the original recording), when not analysing it, that is. is. 🤷
I will say James' vocal style and delivery has really changed compared to way back but I do appreciate both eras.
Nonetheless, still a great tune 🤘
Actually...I'm mistaken. The breakdown, or bridge section, just before the solo, I'm referring to is in, The Four Horsemen.
That bass is sick too.
I'll forever think "Wah Warrior" instead of "Wonder Woman" if I ever see two W's together
When the new metallica album comes out they are going to show everyone why they are the true road dogs and they can do whatever they want because they are metallica age is certainly no big deal to the metallica boys
metallica was pretty much FIRST in America and they REMAIN....slayer is gone because they all hated each other.
The title of this triggered me, but i listened. Love the message!
After James says there's nothing before Metallica you could hear me yell out Exodus lol tremendous
EFFE
You know not everything needs to be labelled.
It's music, rock music.
Love it for what it is.
So would you classify a band like Dimmu Borgir the same as a band like Electric Wizard? Is folk metal similar to grindcore or industrial metal?
@@NPK476 Hi Nile no but that's my point. Don't label music and argue about if it thrash, speed, heavy etc etc.
Just enjoy whatever floats your boat.
@@stuartcaird7459 Label and categories is a way to distinct one genre from another, which is to make clear distinctions for a lot of practical reasons.

I only came for the WAP juice 🤷♂️ Edit: I always saw Thrash as Metal & Punk 🙂
You should do motorbreath too, from this album❤❤
You really can totally hear thrash metal's hardcore punk influence, especially with punk groups like Minor Threat, the Bad Brains and Circle Jerks. It's all in the speed, volume, aggression and intensity of the riffs and drumming as well as the screamed (rather than sung) vocals, which Black Sabbath's original languid, heavily Blues-influenced doom metal lacked. I don't think it's a coincidence that the cover art on Metallica's debut album also looks a lot like that of a certain famous Black Flag record. Let's also not forget slam dancing/moshing, which was taken straight from the typical chaotic hardcore punk rock shows of the late 1970s/early 1980s.
Btw, You should get a real santa hat. They sell them as Nordic Fur hats. I ordered mine on Etsy from the Slav Medieval Shop. It's made of wool and fox fur. So far it might be the warmest hat I've ever worn. I know you can get the wool in a bunch of colors, but they may have an option for artic fox fur, so it's white. I know they have that for other products. Otherwise the fur is ginger, like a regular fox.
It's a Polish store, but you have to go through Etsy if you live in the US, because their actual website only serves EU and UK.
Ride the Lightning was my first heavy metal album I ever listen too.
And the Black album was the last. Seen Metallica in 1989, the and justice tour.
Someone needs to come out with country death music lol. I'm not a country music fan, but I wonder what that would sound like lol
I was a teenager when Maiden burst onto the scene, still my favourite 2 Maiden albums are with Paul on Vox, and they and Motörhead were the first bands to mix punk and Metal. At the same time in Canada , Exciter and some early Anvil, were the first real speed Metal Demons. Exciter toured America as headliner, with Metallica and other well known thrashers on the undercard. Before being exposed to Exciter these bands were slower. What you get when you mix Canadian Speed Metal, with punkish/Metal Maiden, Motörhead, is Metallica, and most of the early Bay Area bands. Still my favourite, is this crossover mixture of multiple genre's. Kreator are the thrashlords of the Universe, imho, for sure I am biased, just like every other Metal thrashing mad Mofo, but Kreator are still thrashing tight as ever, 40 years on! If you never heard them before, give Extreme Aggression, Coma of Souls, Phantom Antichrist, Hordes of Chaos, Pleasure to Kill, Gods of Violence a spin, your metal ears will effing gasm.
Also, another band across the pond, Accept, released Restless and Wild in the same year that this was released.
Fast as a Shark was every bit as fast and brutal, yet still unequivocally metal.
Bitchin tune
Hey, do "An Angel's Poem on a Grave" by Angel Vivaldi, there is a lot of proggy stuff going on there that you can look at, and Angel Vivaldi is such an excellent artist too!
Mustaine had a hand in this track
I'm gonna listen to the Live Undead version of this song. 😁
Kill 'Em All is one of the best Thash debuts ... maybe the best, and for sure one of the reasons I got into more extreme music later on. 🤘🤘🤘
"Please stop watching my channel" LOL Love it!
It is punk influenced for sure, but this song particularly the ferocious riff is also very Motörhead influenced.
Some content creators or reaction videos are so not good. This has to be one of them type channels.
Shred. I mean you no disrespect, but your channel has been in my feed the past few days so I gave it a try.
Less talk and more play is everything.
Moving on.....
The out of the box moment was Dave Mustaine playing a Lynyrd Skynyrd song before a practice session back in the day .
Wrong. That statement was for the mechanix/Four Horsemen
I knew it! The real first Album by Metallica was Shill'EmAll! followed by Ride the Fraudening and Caster of Misprints! I've been lied to nooo arrggh! :)
Caster of Misprints! hahaha amazing!
The mixing from this show hits hard
we love u Shred Claus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Metal and punk are so close as genres that it's really tough to know the actual difference musically. Yes, I know metal guitarists usually put down flashy solos and the riffs can be more intricate but ultimately the basic fundamentals are the same and they are driven by the same feelings of anger and rebellion.
Hello Shred,
You definitely have the right to your opinion. However, after 40 years they're still rocking!!!! 😁
DJ Khalid is a one of the top guitarists of all time. He’s up there with Little Wayne and Nick Jonas! lol!
Not as superior as MGK
Metallica has some songs that could be considered different genres. Seek and destroy sounds a lot like Into the void from black sabbath. Songs like battery, fight fire with fire, trapped under ice, damge inc, and dyers eve sound like thrash songs. Creeping death and Master of puppets sound like new wave of brittish metal songs. Songs like phantom lord, and no life till leather sound like crossover or motorhead sounding songs.
a pre-Metallica band but the song was written by Dave Mustaine?
FYI James and Kirk have had Hair Extensions since the early 90s, the Black album.
“I was just watching baby metal…”

James was into bands like Misfits, Disharge, GBH, Ramones and he has mentioned these bands in many interviews…
If you play these Discharge riffs from 1982 tighter and mute the strings like James or Scott Ian = Early thrash metal: ua-cam.com/video/i70zFUh5ugA/v-deo.html (Anthrax also did a cover of this song)
James Hetfield was hugely influenced by punk bands like Discharge and GBH, (and his downpicking style is hugely inspired by the Ramones) as well as NWOBHM bands like Diamond Head. After hearing Venom fuse the two he did the same and thats essentially what Thrash is.
People will claim Dave mustaine invented Thrash or some nonsense but no it was bands like Venom and Lars Ulrichs knowledge of these bands that influenced James and Dave.
Mustaine was already into Venom when he answered James and Lars's ad in the paper that they are looking for a second guitarist. I do agree though that Venom were the first to fuse Punk and Metal.
@@ValSchnitzel He wouldn't have heard them yet as They didn't release their LP until 1982 and Dave didn't hear it until Lars got it imported and showed James and Dave, but once he did they both wrote their fastest songs each whiplash and metal militoa
@@deletedhero5579 Just a correction: Venom released their debut in 1981, and also had an EP and 2 demos prior to the debut. Dave regularly imported on his own releases of bands from the UK such as Budgie, Diamond Head, Venom and Iron Maiden- all of which inspired him on his pre-metallica band 'Panic'.
@@ValSchnitzel Apologies yea it was 1981 but December and I don't think it was imported into America until 1982.
But Panic was more of a Gamma cover band with a couple of mid tempo rock songs. Dave had certainly heard of budgie and motorhead and was looking to be in a heavier harder band than Panic.
But where James had some diamond head and motorhead influenced songs and Dave did too it was once they both heard venom that they fused punk speed to these songs and wrote faster songs.
Venom should be credited with the inspiration for Metallica's fusion of punk and NWOBHM and if Lars can get any credit for Metallica's sound it's the vision for this sound and knowledge of all the underground European metal bands he had imported into America
If someone is a fan of Classical music and Jazz (Unironically) in a metal band, will draw from that naturally because it's structures they are familiar with, like musicians who are fan of Metallica, will at points use similar structures they are familiar with. Punk and Metal wasn't truly that different, except the speed but if you slow it down and boom, it could just as well been Metal.
You have an online guitar lesson business. Shouldn't you be doing cyber Monday instead of black Friday?
Unless it's Black Metal Friday sale. That'd be different.
Wrong,,,,metal music started with Blue cheer,,,,,with the cover song, summer time blues(1968)
Bruh, no! METALLICA RULEZ!
They may be a post-comercial, corporatized version of themselves but they are still our Metallica, they are a pillar of Thrash Metal and we love them.
(Lars, don't sue me.)
In my opinion Megadeth's "Killing is My Business" album is just a Punk album with solos.
For me they finish (like a true metal band) after the Garage Inc. Ride The Lightning is the best for me...
Well just because you have a strong punk thread through your sound it does not make one punk. It's a bit like Dexter Holland having bitching down picking riffs but Offspring were sure as shit not metal. I mean all thrash bands I think have that punk vein threaded in there both with the guitars and drum patterns. Most notably for me actually would be Slayer. Although they're probably the darkest of The Big Four they sound to me to have the strongest albeit most aggressive punk thread in their sound. Anthrax retain the brightest pink influence and Megadeth are actually the most text book Metal of the four.
So? All of those ‘80’s and 90’s metal bands were punk bands struggling to survive.
Shreeed i lovely our jokes like hetfield voice is 69 lvl 420.666% HAHAHAHA
