Wrong. Hercules is undoubtedly the best and most powerful Greek hero; he was trained in the best possible way and has the best possible weapons. He has achieved things any other hero couldn't. He killed the Hydra, he tamed Cerberus, he held the entire world, defeated the Nemean lion. Achilles was undefeated by humans, but Hercules would crush him, this is a fact. He was stronger quicker and a better fighter and has way more experience.
What's truly inspirational is that they represent an everyman choosing to go up against seemingly impossible tasks in order to better themselves, their group, or the world they live in. This is what it truly means to be a hero.
I think the hero Cadmus is important as well. He is the first hero and slayer of monsters, by slaying the water guardian of Ares. Edit: He also founded the city Thebes and the Greek alphabet.
The battle between Achilles and Hector was one of the most Epic battles of Greek mythology was it? Because I remember Hector getting sexually harassed by his mother and then running around Troy three times before getting absolutely massacred by Achilles (I love Hector in the Iliad but his character just gradually gets worse further along the narrative)
@Thor Berserker of Thunder No it was never a true match at all from the beginning. Achilles won by pure skill alone. Hector was a great warrior and a powerful leader in his own right. But Achilles was beyond him in every possible way. Even nerfed, to use gaming argo, he would have won. He was simply that good. The Iliad and the myth is as clear as it can be in this. Even Hector himself knew this when he went outside to face him, that he was going to his death. Every other battle has a certain tension and a back and forth to it when you read it, not so in the battle between Achilles and Hector. He is seen to dominate the fight from the beginning and you know immediately what the outcome will be. The only question is how long will Hector last. His defeat was a forgone conclusion. The only person that would have won against Achilles, and I use would have because there is no possible way for Achilles to win against him just like Hector couldn't win against Achilles, is Heracles himself.
Odysseus was and still is my favourite one! Yes, I know I know, Heracles is more well-known, but I am gonna present my opinions. I believe that he was kinda different than the majority of the other heroes. All the other ones were the sons of a god. Odysseus was the only mortal. All the other ones were known for their fighting skills. Odysseus managed to get away with his intelligence, like when he was trapped inside the Cyclop's cave. And I personally prefer heroes who rely on their brain rather on their strength. That's my opinion!
Odyseus was related to Hermes, the only one with least god's help and parentage would be Ajax the Great ... He freaking came close to killing hector himself twice and his demise was also most sad and not suited for a warrior ...
My favorite was the almost physcopathic Diomedes who leaving Troy went home to find his queen had betrayed him forcing him to flee to Italy. There he found his own city. When the enemies of Aeneas came to Diomedes offering a reward for him to fight Aeneas, a Trojan that he had beaten before the walls of Troy. Diomedes refused chosing to live the rest of his life in peace wishing Aeneas the same.
To me Hector is the real hero during the Trojan war. Achilles was driven by his ego, pride and self-righteousness. Hector was driven by his duty, honor and need to protect his people. That is what a real hero should be like. And a lot of the 'heroes' on this list did really nasty things. Like how Jason abandoned the woman who helped him get the golden fleece
It's interesting to note that the Romans considered Odysseus to be a bad guy, an antagonist. This is for two reasons: 1. The Romans traced their mythological ancestry to Prince Aneus of Troy. Hence, they saw themselves as descendants of the Trojans, and therefore the Greek heroes of the Trojan War were their enemies (though earlier Greek heroes were not, as they had done nothing against Troy). 2. Odysseus offended Roman ideas of virtue and honour. People tend to forget that Roman culture was significantly influenced by the Etruscan and Latin cultures of Italy, and so while the cosmopolitan Greeks (especially Athens) valued wit, cunning and intelligence, the Romans were more like old-fashioned country folk and valued honesty, forthrightness, duty and rugged simplicity. Therefore, they saw Odysseus as a duplicitous scumbag who tricked and swindled his way to success instead of a working or fighting for it like a "real Roman man". It's funny to read accounts of conflict in Roman society between those who supported Hellenisation and those who were seeking to conserve Rome's traditional Latin values.
I can imagine Jason Gracce and Percy Jackson (from Heroes of Olympus series) watching this list and Percy being all smirky because Jason, the hero, came after Percius
