- We are privileged to have three people presenting on one of the most elegant Geographic DNA Projects at FTDNA. The Munster Irish is a project that explores the genetic signatures of the men of the south of Ireland, the relationships that exist between the various Munster surnames, and whether the DNA evidence refutes or confirms the ancient genealogies of Munster. I am 16% Munster Irish and my ancestors linked to this area include Sullivan - my 3x Great Grandfather was Thomas Sullivan.
My Great³ Grandfather was born in Munster County Cork. My family Surname is Sullivan. I would be so interested in this project! I noticed this video was from 7 years ago. I find it interesting you say the families of Munster could have been from Spain. My DNA also shows "Iberian Peninsula" which is near Spain. This is also present in my Grandfather who is 50% Irish, his dad my Great Grandfather(who I knew as he died when I was 9 years old) who was 100% Irish.

My daughter's DNA was 64% munster Irish. My husband's family came to Canada in 1825 on a ship called the Amity. They were Peter Robinson settlers.
What a fine scholarly effort--greatly appreciated. I have many surnames on that map.
My DNA test returned as 82% centered on the West Iveragh peninsula in the southwest of Kerry. Links in well where my Sullivan ancestors came from. Now I have to do a Ydna to track down my father's family who are Connolly's we think. It becomes an obsession once you start this. Great talk on the families of Munster.

I am 55% Irish from my fathers family. I live in America. Most of my ancestors are in Limerick Munster Ireland. Other counties are Clare- O’Brien, they moved to Limerick

I am 21%, Munster Irish. North Munster. It's not much compared to others here on this video chat. I am mostly Polynesian but I am very proud of the 21 percent Munster Irish! even though it's not a huge percent. My mother's grandfather was a Breen. My mother is 45 percent Irish 45 percent Scottish and 10 percent English and northern Europe.

My ancestors came from North Munster to Beaufort, South Carolina as early as the 1740s, and include members that were involved in both the Revolutionary and the Civil War. Because my last name is Overstreet, which is the Englishized version of 'Auberstreight', which is German, of origin from Belgium, my family always thought we were from Germany. And while the minority part of our bloodline is German, the majority of it is Irish. My next project is to somehow obtain family records from North Munster in the 1750s from shipping records to trace my family history in Ireland and then on further back in time to Germany, and then finally to the original surname mother country, Belgium.
Do to wars and groups being prejudiced, celtics settled much of France, Germany, England, Europe. Celtics most likely are Armenians.
If this project still ongoing and if so, how can I participate? I've already done an intial DNA test which shows I'm 100% western European. Irish and Scottish. Most of results show western Ireland. I have O'Brien as a surname and my grandfather was Desmond Earl Jones. Desmond meaning" from south Munster". Jones is an anglicanised Welsh name.

I’m 41% Munster Irish, my family tree says our name was Ó Bucalla or Ó Buachalla now Buckley. My ancestors were there in 1775-1950 then migrated to New Jersey USA
Buckley is my mothers maiden name and we’re traced back to Munster as well! We could be related 😂 Australian here !
My 3rd highest was Munster Irish. 14%, My gg grandparents immigrated 1887/1889. I suspect evictions...names O’Leary, Lynch, O’Connor, Herlihy, Aherne. Our locations were Boherbue, Carrigaline, Ovens, & Cork city...immigrated first to Indiana, Chicago, and finally Minnesota...this is fascinating.
Plenty of the O' Leary family in the blarney/ovens area still to this day. My mother's family are O'Leary's.

My DNA profile is 51% Irish, Munster and Cork.
Anyone know where O'Herlihy fits in all this? The Munster branch of my family has Callaghan/Dineen, but my grandmother was a Herlihy. Musgraige of course but it's hard to find info on their connection with the other lineages.

Yes and no lol. My Dad was born Francis McNamara Donahue but it was changed when he was adopted by his step-father. So our last name is Bertolero now - but I'll always be Donahue by blood :) Are you involved with the Munster Irish DNA Project?

Ancestry says my 50 something percent Irish is Munster, something about the bogs and outlaws area , Im a legal Canadian immigrant into the USA '67. Im also 3% Neanderthal more than 97% of Ancestry's customers . My moms last name was Magee .... I found in my case , most people that I'm related to on ancestry really dont want to talk .
I am American from Philadelphia. I recently had a D.N.A test done. It said I was 98 percent Irish and my family's origins come from Cork County. We came to America in the 1800s most likely because of religious beliefs. I'm catholic. Or the famine

That's incredibly rare! For an American to have Irish ancestry that high. It'd be common in Ireland but outside of there you'd only expect it from first generation emigrants
I was shocked myself. I thought I had more german but less than 2 percent. My father was 100 percent and my mother was 90 percent. Both Irish Catholic. Philadelphia still has a large population of Irish. Very proud
My Irish ancestors came over to America in 1850 on my father's side and 1700s/1800s on my mother's side. I did my DNA and it said I was 83% Irish/Scottish/Celtic from Munster.
(My family names are O'Sullivan, O'Callahan, Murphy, O'Brian, Burns/Byrne, Dalton, Kennedy on my Father's side )
The rest was Norway, Sweden, Germany, France and 1%UK.
I was an exchange student to Norway in high school. I asked my host father what Native Norwegians look like as they were from Germany. He came over during WW2. He replied, "they look like you!" This was in 1986.
So I was excited to see he was right when my DNA was done and showed Norway.
I have brown/auburn hair with amber brown eyes, freckles.
Depending on where we lived in USA (We were a military family) People would assume I was Italian, Spanish, Greek, Hispanic, Brazilian, French, Basque or from Israel. Never Irish. I grew up in a heavy Irish community.
My children are...one is reddish brown hair, red & black beard with big amber brown eyes and olive skin if tan, second is red hair, green eyes, fair skin with freckles and burns in the sun, third is a blonde with hazel eyes and is between fair & olive skin. He lightly tans. All bright headed.
My great grandmother came from Doolin in Clare and my dna 🧬 came back Munster which lead me to this in my search of what that means. My dna is 33 percent Munster. My great grandmother was named Susan Glynn

I'm Munster Irish 37%the Howards, northern Irish/Scotch 45% the Coulters, and the rest English and Swedish. Arizona, USA Tami Sutton ( my Munster Irish derived from Lillian Howard whose death was in Tucson on June 27, 2000 and her daughter's murder, Nancy (maternal Howard) (paternal Cuppe). (Sullivan by marriage)was 5 months later Nov. 27, 2000.

They had 100 kern and 7 horsemen according to an English report in the 1560s.
Dál gCais common ancestor is Tál Cas, not Cormac Cas. Cormac Cas is probably an invention. I think Z17669 is most likely the ancestral haplogroup of tribes which are Dál gCais proper (descendents of this Cas) as 95% of descendents of L226 are under it and it is where the greatest proliferation and diversification arises. The descendents of Cas' sons Bloid (The Ó mBloid, Brian Boru's family etc.), Caisín (the Ó Caisín, Clan Cuiléin, McNamara, O'Hartigan, O'Halloran etc.) and Aonghus Ceann Nathrach (Cinéal Fearmaic, O'Dea, Griffin etc.) all share Z17669 as their common ancestor, all surnames with well described pedigrees leading back to Cas share it. That's not to say it originated with this Cas definitively, but he possessed it. It makes sense that the founder of this dynasty had other Irish relatives who went on to have their own descendents.

@@sue5158 The O'Callaghans are descendents of Callachán Caisil (d. 954), the last strong Eoganacht King of Munster before the disintegration of the Eoganacht Munster kingship (They would later reconstitute in Desmond under the McCarthys). The O'Callaghans and the McCarthys share the common patrilineal ancestor of Callachán Caisil and share a unique Y mutation. This Y mutation is completely separate to that of the Eoganacht Y signature, meaning Callachán was not Eoganacht patrilineally and his pedigree must be inaccurate. In Cathréim Cellachán Caisil it directly says that he was born out of an affair of his mother outside her marriage so this can be taken to explain this.

What’s the best way to find the origin of my surname? I’m from Ireland, with a surname that appears to be of Irish origin though being fairly uncommon.
I just googled mine and found the original Irish spelling and found a book about the O'Reilly clan!

I have several DNA matches throughout, Donegal, Connacht, Ulster, Central Ireland, Leinster and Munster. The majority of my genealogy comes from Munster. I'm here to learn more, as I was estranged from my biological family as a child.
Probably about 7th gen American born. Just had DNA tested and 41% Irish, Muster traits. Mother is an O'Hara. Found O'hEaghra descended from Munster but received territory in co. Sligo. Family tree is lost once gets back to Ireland unfortunatley.
Other Grandma is a Sweeney and great Grandma is a McFadden.

How do I test? I'm a Kirby (Eóghanacht Áine). I'm currently trying to reconnect with family. I'll be in Ireland from July 13th to July 25th, and I'll be doing some research while I'm there.
Hope you made it to Ireland with the COVID19 issue. But for testing, you have to test with Family Tree DNA. There are a number of YDNA tests, prices going up with more detail. I'd suggest a Y111 STR test, and only go further if you get matches.

My Great Grandmother was Catherine Fitzgerald born County Cork.
My DNA results show 91% Irish. My Kerry names are Moriarty, Hanrahan, Coyle, Cahill, English, Butler, Sullivan, Kelliher, and many more.
I also have a Coyle family on my paternal Great-grandmother Margaret"Maggie"Coyle,s side.Other Irish names are Clair(Clare),Head,and O,Neal.I know that O,Neal is a very Gaelic Irish surname,and the O'Neal s are probably descendants of the 4th Century semi-legendary Irish hero,Niall of the Nine Hostages.
Do you know if your Maggie Coyle is related to Daniel Joseph Coyle? He was born in 1863 in Co. Kerry and died in 1919 in Oakland, CA. He was married to my great aunt, Bridget Moriarty (1865-1940)

27% Ireland. South west Munster, North and east Cork, Central Cork. My great grandad John O'Brien was from Ireland his parents were both from Ireland John O'Brien (senior) and Johannah O'Leary.
O’Brien is a name known in Limerick and nearby Clare. My friend was an O’Brien and going back in time they were one of the two leading Irish Gypsy Royal Clans, the other family was the O’Connor’s of Wexford and they had many clan battles. There are a lot of old O’Brien graves in the old Birdhill area graveyard. There is also an O’Brien’s tower in Doolin in Couny Clare with a great story online. I hope this helps in your search.

My dna test showed me being 55% Irish matching with people from cork, munster. My mother is an O'Keefe. Her grand parents migrated to the states. Is castle dromagh apart of my ancestors? Where they kings of munster really?
My father was an O’KEEFFE from Munster and yes I always heard their line were kings of Ireland. Not sure if that meant Chieftain or true kings in Ireland. My father came to New York, U.S.A.

When I did my dna test it showed me being related to O'Keeffe's that currently live in munster and cork. We're descendants of a kingship. Our ancestor Cathal mac Finguine started the O'Keeffe/ Ó Caoimh(in irish) clan. We reigned at castle Dromagh. We're from the eoganachta glendanmarch line of kings. Our blood was meant to rule. The gentle kings. Our kin showed compassion and loved to be educated. 5 through the 7th century we sat as kings of Munster. We also was lords of fermoy. Cheers mate.
My mother was from Munster and her surname was Meagher and her haplogroup was U2e2, can anyone shed light on this ?
You probably mean U2e. That is a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) Haplogroup which follows the maternal line. In this talk they only consider YDNA because it follows the male line and would correlate with surnames. U2e is too broad to localize much. There is a U2e3a which is specific to Ireland. Your mtDNA would match your mother's, so you could take a full sequence mtDNA test at Family Tree DNA to fully identify which U2e group she was in.

I have McCarthy, O’Brien and Kirby in my tree. My grandmother was a Kirby. My question is does this information for these people hold water in my search for my ancestors? Families been in America for over 200 yrs.
The research holds for people whose both sets of grandparents were born in Munster (because pre 1960s people didn't move around as much as they do nowadays, at least in Ireland)

The account of the Book of Invasions is not entirely accurante from what I can remember. Bilé (or Milé from whence the name Milesians comes from) had two wives, not three. He died while preparing for the invasion of Ireland. It was his second wife and Egyptian pricess called Scotta who led his sons in the invasion. She was a warrior in her own right. As far as historians an archaeologists there is quite a lot of controversy and a more than strong reason to suspect that there has been a contemporary cover-up to protect some academic careers. The reason for this is that some ships were dug up of Egyptian design and no one who tries to access any of the material related to this dig is allowed access to it.
I was just watching another UA-cam video which says that when a pub was being refurbished they found ancient grave, the skeletons were not celts but Asian so could the scythian, Egyptian writing from the monks be correct
Irish just need to accept it is erosion of today's UK and the people were Scots. English. Welsh before 2nd century so therefore mixed heritage then tribes of iberian pirates and traders came. O and Fitz names are derived from French and Spanish. The ppl of NI were probably the indigenous ppl of all Ireland.

My other ancestors (only 1st & 2x Great Grandparents, so not long ago, time wise.. but their fathers, fathers & and ALL THEIR ANCESTORS! Including the WOMEN! were all “MUNSTER” descendents.. or ACTUAL **MUNSTER MEN** their daughters married, so LEAHY, as well as (O’Leary-LEARY) and
McSweeney, Dillon, Murphy, O’Connor, are all names these “Munster Men’s” daughters married into, as their GRANDSONS, and granddaughters were BORN into, but were originally, from quite a few names they seem to wanting larger numbers to ‘contribute to’ but being female, I apparently don’t matter. My real last name is Guihan and my highest percentage (37) was from my Father who is 2nd generation American Munster, Ireland.
The Guihan surname appeared in Gaelic as Mag Uiginn, which is probably derived from a Norse forename. The name is usually pronounced as "McGwiggen" in it's homeland County Tyrone (especially around Omagh).--- yes this is Northern Ireland but ancestry.com says my blood is from Munster
I found it you look at the chart of the line of king DAVID and the tribe of JUDAH the haplogroup chart lines up exactly with it and the L-144 lines up exactly with JUDAH
