  • In this video I run jumper wires to repair missing or lifted solder pads on a 2005 Silverado Instrument cluster. This gauge pod was a prior repair attempt by someone else. Its always fun to clean up someones mess.

Prior repair attempts are always fun. If you got one you messed up and need it fixed let me know.

The 2005 driver info VFD's are crummy, they go dim with use/hours. Meanwhile the ones used in 03-04 seem to stay at maximum brightness without any issues.
There is one [122] resistor in that driver info power supply to watch out for, I wasn't sure if you got that one or not, but when it fractures just the driver info VFD will go out.

I normally leave the vfd circuit alone unless it has problems. I've run into that 122, the transistors (or Fets I never looked the part number) and the diodes down bottom being an issue before. The transistors only ever seen to be bad on prior repair attempts and they will be blown. The diodes or that resistor is always just a cracked joint. I've never found to be common but if it's common enough for you then I'll add to normal regiment for this rebuild.

@@FixedUntilBroken that VFD power supply resistor isn't a very common failure, but if you watch for it in the high mileage used and abused clusters you'll see them start to fracture. I hit it while I'm reflowing the others just to be on the safe side. Same one can fracture in some version of the trail blazer too

Which tip do you use on your JBC?

I like c210-008, c210-018 and c120-902. I think 902 is really for hot tweezers but I've just used them as a j tip
