  • This video is for a work around if a pad for a through hole component has been pulled or removed. This is on a single layer board and uses the advantage of the new parts USUALLY having longer leads on them to begin with.

Thank you for being detailed about the little stuff that isn't actually little stuff to someone like me who is just beginning to learn about components with his Radio Shack Learning Lab.
I'm practicing soldering skills like this with mostly junk circuit boards, but I'm also daring to fix a quality sound mixer. It's got a handful of missing pads for the faders which had a short and blew the power supply. The missing pads are super tiny. I've ordered new pads, butI'm still not going to be confident I know exactly which pad should be connected to its neighbor, which needs a barrel connecting the other side or maybe the layer of copper in the center of the board. Even with the data sheets it's likely this is beyond my abilities for now.

This is a straightforward solid technique. Thanks.

Sometimes desoldering irons will suck them off too

The resistor kept falling because cutting the wire of resistor too early.

I don’t understand why some people prefer to use an exact knife to cut leads. Snips, to me, are about 100x safer and easier unless I’m missing something.

Hi! I know I'm late. But, what if the through hole has no trace line? Thanks.

I'm the beginner from a close by comment, so don't take my word as gospel. If there is no trace line I think it's there just so the pin or lead from the component has something to connect to. I've also been told in this situation you might have a layer of copper sandwiched inside the board acting as ground. Oh, and there may be a trace on the other side it's connecting to.

I did this on a Xbox one controller where the joystick attaches 😬
