  • 2022 Ford Maverick FX-4: Winter Driving Review From Sudbury, Ontario
In this video, we're testing the non-hybrid Maverick FX-4 AWD model, running a 2-litre turbo four EcoBoost with all-wheel drive, the FX-4 off-road package, and a long list of features. Look for 250 horsepower, up to 4,000 pounds of towing, 8-speed automatic and intelligent power to all-four wheels, it’s about $40,000 for my tester.
CORRECTION: Pricing from the low-forties for the 2022 Ford Maverick FX-4 I'm showing you in this video!

To my Canadian cousin, great review! I have been looking at the Maverick for some time now instead of an SUV. I can manage with an SUV (Explorer) but I find myself not being able load due to the roof of an SUV. I do not need a full size pickup, nor do I need to pay price of the mid size trucks. The maverick just seems to fit my needs perfectly. I live in New England and only need to navigate our snowy winters. This video has helped me decide to go with the Maverick as my next choice for a vehicle. Thank you, Donald P. Pritchard

I have a little over 1000 KMs on my Maverick. I got it off the lot after a guy backed out on his order. It has done so great in the snow here in Alberta. The slippery drive mode you get with the Fx4 package is awesome. Perfect size for me too as I don't really haul anything other than my hockey equipment and the odd Home Depot/Canadian Tire run. Finally a reasonably sized truck for those of us stuck in the city.

First, I will start out by saying this is by far, the BEST hand on, driven Maverick review I have come across and I have come across quite a few in the past few days. Congratulations. (And if someone researched me, they will find I am not bashful in blasting some reviewers.)
As for tires. I live at 4500 feet surrounded by mountains in the State of Idaho. I currently have a GMC 4x4 Sierra and keep the same set of tires on all year. Toyo Open Country AT III! So far the best for all purposes (dry road, gravel, pot holed gravel, smooth gravel, gravel with some large sharp rocks, as well as light, medium and very heavy snow on flat and mountain roads, and packed down slipperier than a greased pig. I travel the Teton Pass between Victor Idaho and Jackson WY often in the winter and with a 10% grade on any type of snow covered surface these tires track great and I have confidence they will move the truck and/or stop the truck.
I learned of Toyo tires when I was living in Moab UT and used a Hummer and a Jeep Wrangler for daily driving as well as rock crawling, mountain driving mostly in desert but the La Sal mountains outside of Moab were noted to get some nice heavy snowfalls.
Whatever I purchase next, will have these Toyo tires installed in days.
Have to wonder why Ford did not include LED flashers; front and rear with the brake lights. Understand, most likely easily replaceable and most likely some resisters needed to stop hyperflash, but still for a Lariat package would have been nice.

Thanks Douglas, glad to hear it, and your insight. I've never had a bad time on a good set of Toyos.

In response to your question - I run dedicated winter tires and switch out to dedicated summer tires when it gets above 9.5C every day. I live in an area that does get heavy snow, and I make sure I have good tires for all road conditions. After all, that is the car's only physical contact with the road!
I have Hakkapeliitta R3 tires on right now. I have been extremely impressed with how they handle ice. The only tires I see rated higher than them all use studs.
I ran Hancook Ventus R-S4s last summer. I no longer have those wheels, so I'll be switching to something else this summer.

Great Review! I am looking to replace my 2010 Ford Ranger with the Maverick in 2024. I’m holding off until then, because I can’t bring myself to part with my Ranger. It’s really been the most dependable vehicle I have ever owned. Also I want to see how the reviews for the Maverick hold up after two years on the market. I use Michelin Blizzak snow tires on my Ranger and I am very pleased with their performance. Thanks for taking the time to review these vehicles.

Good Afternoon Justin. It looks like you sampled a fully dressed Lariat [which is what I'm considering]. It seems that the Maverick is a solidly screwed together daily driver that can handle winter and rougher roads in a civilized manner. Thank you for your thorough review. Kindly, Graham.

Based off of previous experience and research I chose to opt for Firestone Destination AT for year long use. They're quiet, ride smoothly, don't hydroplane too easily in ponding water, and have been pretty good in deep snow. I currently am running them on my Ram 1500 and had no problem whatsoever plowing through 1 1/5 - 2" of snow in an unplowed section of the parking lot at work. I will admit, they aren't perfect on ice, but in 4WD when needed, you'd never know it.
I'll opt for a suitable size, or opt for the Destination LE3 for the Maverick I plan to order when the ordering opens up in a few weeks. The LE3 isn't rated for winter use, but they were far better than the GY Wrangler RT/S that came on my old Ranger, and they easily pulled me through a couple feet of snow with confidence.

Switch to winters tires for both vehicles. Blizzaks for the Ram 1500 and x-ice snows for the Grand Cherokee. Worth every penny for safety and saving tread wear on the all season tires….so can get longer use during their tread life

Man, I'm working on buying a house right now, but after I get the house, my next big purchase will be a second car, preferably something I can do some light hauling in, like what this Maverick is capable of. I will be trying my hand at ordering one of these online before stepping foot into the dealership if I can't find a decent one used. Very afraid they will be extremely hard to come by when that day comes, new or used, forcing me to either wait longer or go for something older and more readily available.

I don't plan on leaving the factory Continentals on as we approach winter. My thoughts are going with what I have had a good experience with on other vehicles I've owned, mostly being Firestone Destinations, either the LE or AT. Had both on vehicles and they worked great in heavy rain and snow. Actually, the LE(highway all-season) performed better in rain and snow than a competitors three peak snowflake rated all terrains, and the LEs had easily gone through two feet of snow comfortably.

Now that Ford offers a Ranger Raptor with the 2.7 V6 maybe the Maverick will have a similar trim or another engine option perhaps the 2.3. Surprised Ford didn't just offer the 2.3 as the standard engine. The 2.0 is respectable at 250/277 but the 2.3 has more usable power and better torque at 270/320 which seems like better truck power numbers. Also a duel injection system which utilizes both direct and port injection for better carbon cleaning of the valves for longer operating life. Non the less I like the direction Ford has been going offering several great options for most endeavors a person may seek.

I live in Chicago, all season tires year-round in anything I drive is just fine as long as you know how to keep your vehicle under control. Yes, winter tires are superior in winter weather, but I feel is overkill. Cost too much and takes too much space to keep an additional set of wheels and tires.

The real test will be how's it holding up after 2 years. If a car company can't make a vehicle that performs well when it's new, that's a pretty low bar. I gave up on Ford, tempted with the new Bronco and the Maverick, but then my memory of past experience kicks in.

I got to test drive a Maverick 2.0 and thought it was very peppy(i currently drive a F150 5.0) and reliabilty wise the 2.0 EB has been around for some time now and seems to have a pretty good track record

Personally I avoid most v6 vehicles. In general they get far worse fuel economy than the 4 cylinders and have less power than a v8. I think the 4 cylinder makes more sense here for the small truck market and the v8 more so for the bigger trucks that have a frame type construction rather than the unibody of the Maverick so the bigger v8 trucks work well with the higher towing capacity and the 4 cylinder is great for lighter weight efficient hauling in the bed for those of us that just want to haul something like a dirt bike without getting 15 mpg.
