- Goku voice actor comparison.
Peter Kelamis versus Sean Schemmel.
Apparently some people have pointed out that this video may be biased and have lashed out at me because of this. However, even on unbiased videos, Funifans feel the need to bash anything that isn't part of their beloved dub, so whether it's bias or not is irrelevant among them.
Damn. Kelamis sounds VERY close to the japanese actress for Goku.
Yeah
It's what he aimed for.
And He's Better Than Japanese Goku
it’s an old woman that’s why
Japanese goku sounds like a strangled cat, not a good sound for an all powerful male warrior.

Schemmel is actually very good, buy Kelamis did a better job in the other movies like World's Strongest. They are both great in their own right
Ocean got ripped off they only had like a month to record the rest of dbz when they picked it up again funimation had a whole fucking year to record that's why ocean sounds half-assed in the later seasons. It's an unfair comparison not to mention the director kept changing for ocean.

He sounds NOTHING like Sonic. I don’t hear it!
Yeah, I was thinking that too.
Dear god, the bias here is insane.
That said, while I grew up more on Schemmel thanks to (shitty) Orange Bricks, I still think Peter is pretty good. He certainly captures Masako. Personally, Schemmel will ALWAYS be Goku to me, but I recognize Peter’s talent. So to sum it up, they’re both really good!
I agree.
Heard schemmel growing up. But Yeah, Peter definitely capture Masako's version in english.
@@RiRyn27 You guys mean Masako captures Peter's version right?
@@Sempermac No, Masako came first
Sempermac No, Masako is the original Goku
While Schemmel doesn't do "silly" quite as well, he actually sounds like a man in battle which is pretty important!
Correct!
That’s the thing if you’re basing it off of the Japanese original, Goku never sounds like a man
N7thegreatspy of course not...it’s a women who make the voice... but i agree Goku should sound like a man, it’s better
I think he does
Goku never really grows up though. At least in terms of his personality. He's not a manly character, he's a child at heart. I think Peter Kelamis' voice captures that well. I do like Sean Schemmel's voice for Goku, and despite what this video says, I especially love the way he sounds when Goku is more silly. Kelamis' voice just stays more true to Goku's character consistently in my opinion.

You’re bias. Kelamis or what is name is does the job good. Schemmel is shittel
Kalamis is better because he was a professionally trained VA and ventriloquist. He could do amazing things with his voice. Saban made a REALLY good call hiring him and those first 3 movies are considered the most faithful adaptations of the original story by all of us older DBZ fans who have been watching since the mid 90s. Schemmel and the other in-house talent that they hired later due to not being able to afford the older Saban/Ocean cast, were all untrained amateur voice actors. Sean got better with time, but not nearly as good a fit for Goku as Kelamis.
I started watching in '98-'99 and prefer Schmmel.
@@mkhanman12345 Do you prefer him even for the first three movies? I have a hard time watching the Funimation version of those movies, though it's not just because of Sean. Almost all of the voices outside of Gohan and Krillin feel way off. It's very apparent in Tree of Might when you compare Pioneer to Funi.
wow
@@Cableguy15yes schemmel is better. kelamis sounds like a bitch
Ian James Corbett is my favourite. I'm from the UK so I grew up with the ocean dub
I see a lot of people here saying that Kelamis is much more accurate to the Japanese which is true, but its important to realize that when subbing your not just changing the language you’re also changing the voice in general to sound more like something you might hear in that country. In English speaking countries it is not common for grown men to sound like children, even in animation, so Goku shouldn’t sound like that either. Schemmel sounds light hearted and fun when peaceful but sounds like a warrior during battle. That’s how it should be.
>.> What's your opinion of the SM Dic vs Viz dubs? Or are you one of those people who are bias towards viz because they had a more accurate script to the Japanese one plus the editing and censorship.
First seeing dbz on toonami there was 3 different voice actors for dbz but Sean always hit home.
@@misspretty8969 Everyone forgets Ian. 🤷♂️
For voice acting, the characterisation should come before the design. Peter Kelamis and Masako Nozawa still sound like warriors in battle, their voices simply fit Goku's character as a childlike martial artist.
Sean Schemmel's voice more so fits with Funimation's patented Superman Goku. *insert joke about Superman Goku sucking here*
I think a good middle ground would be Kirby Morrow, his voice is higher pitched, but sounds like an adult.
Bruh do you think anyone in japan sounds like goku? Hes a fucking alien in a cartoon.
can you just upload the video without these annoying biased texts smh
Or, you could just listen to the comparisons without looking at the screen. It IS a comparison of audio after all.
Zero Fighter he made fun of schemmels voice because the goku sounded sick. Literally in that string of episodes he gets the heart virus.
There’s nothing wrong with having favor to a certain voice, there’s definitely shit that kelamis says that I like, but just because I prefer schemmel doesn’t mean I should berate kelamis’ voice.
And final point, it is an audio comparison, but interjects with text monologues. There’s nothing wrong with that but there’s no way to know when a clip will start and when it will end
@@Lordecai
Okay? So? What's your point? If you don't like it, other people have made comparison compilations. Why are you so hellbent that this one person fall in line to your wishes?
Zero Fighter I made 2 points there buddy, don’t know why you’re asking me what my point is. Just because there are other videos doesn’t mean that I can’t comment on this one. Plus this is the only video comparing the 2 that I could find. Regardless, there is a comment section for a reason. If you wanted to make everything peachy and positive then we might as well disable comments altogether.

Kelamis is an overall better person that Sean Schemmel. He doesn’t act like Goku belongs to him. I’m pretty sure Sean also tried to get him banned from a convention because he didn’t like the fact Kelamis also played Goku.
Kelamis did get removed from Kamehacon, though if you watch YellowFlash2, there was at one point a consideration to have Goku Black be voiced as either Peter Kelamis here or Ian Corrlet. Though funimation might be gone if the lawsuit Vic's going through is anything to go by...
Scott E. Wolfrey He was considered to be the role, but again, Sean Schemmel had to be a pathetic little bitch boy and complain about it. He genuinely seems to believe that Goku belongs to him and it’s honestly sickening.

I don't get the whole "nostalgia goggles" thing everyone keeps talking about. I was born in the 2000s and pretty much knew only Schemmel as Goku and I genuinely prefer Kelamis and Corlett as Goku instead. It doesn't always have to be nostalgia that makes a person like something. People can actually have different preferences from yours.
Just because the "nostalgia goggles" thing doesn't apply to you doesn't mean that it can't apply to anyone else. For other people, growing up with either one of the voices generally creates a bias towards said voice since you have more of a connection with hearing it.
@SpaceBoy They're subjectively wrong, because it's their opinion. They aren't trying to claim that Kelamis and Corlett are better than Schemmel. They're just stating what they prefer. I know based on the description you seem really butt hurt that people are rightfully calling out your bias, but regardless of opinion there's no need to drag down Sean Schemmel, to build up Peter Kelamis. They both have their own interpretations of Goku and I both think they do a great job.
You are clearly one side sided in this video. You're real problem is lack of focus of the directing between the two actors.
The director for the dub group Kelamis was in, doesn't make his Goku seem real and/or natural. Its more cartoony. Yes, Kelamis can nail serious moments and high tension parts but its still not convincingly real.
Now Funimation made Goku feel more realistic with Sean. The extra breaths he takes and frequent pauses he makes, makes it that much more down to earth. More believeable.
So overall it really boils down to directing. Not the voice actor themselves. You just made yourself look very biased. So good job.
Back to my actual comment I think both did a great job as goku but to me Sean scheamel is goku and Peter Kalimis is rolf Sean is the true super sayian god where as Peter is the son of a Shepard
You dare mock the son of a shepherd!?
To me it depends on the artstyle, but yes if Sean had Peter's delivery, he'd be the very best Goku from Ginyu - the End. Because of the artstyle changing during that era of the anime, Ian and Peter's voices matched the younger, lean Goku, but there's no question Sean's voice matches the bulkier, older Goku. The same goes for Drummond vs. Sabat arguments. Sabat's voice just doesn't match Vegeta during the Saiyan Saga up to mid Ginyu.

I can't count the number of times I watched DBZ on CN go from Raditz to Recoome and then start over again with Raditz, with the voices of Corlett and Kelamis. THAT is still Goku's voice for me. When I think of lines like "I know the odds are stacked against me, but if there's a way to win, I'm gonna find it!" and "I saw an opening that seemed to scream 'ATTACK'... so, I did," I hear Kemalis's voice in my head and not Schemmel's. I remember the very first time that CN aired Goku's fight with Jace and Burter, and everyone's voice was different. I hated Goku's new voice, and I still do. I can't stand listening to Schemmel voice Goku. Everything about it is wrong on so many levels (at least to me).

I did like Kelamis but in some of the scenes I think Schemmel did better to portray a better rendition of exertion rather than the shrill screams from the japanese dubs. while I don't doubt that Kelamis is good, I prefer Schemmels yells much more. he made Goku less of a screecher and more of a yeller, as real life martial artists are. Check your bias, friend. This wasn't much of a comparison due to it.
+Jimmy Notto Schemmel's screaming has become much too repetitive for my tastes. Whether he's powering up, or yelling from pain, it sounds too similar.
Bait4State It doesn’t to me. He sounds a lot more angry when he powers up, when he gets hit it’s more of a grunt. Peter Kelamis was good but not on the level of Sean Schemmel. His voice is like an English portrayal of Masako except with not much effort. Sometimes he strays from that and straight up sounds like a Mickey Mouse club house voice actor and it’s hard to take him seriously. As much as you hate the raveling in his voice when Sean Schemmel screams, I’d say it adds a lot more depth and energy into his screams. That’s the scream many DBZ fans, including myself, were trying to replicate as a child. This video is just a huge biased joke to be blatantly honest. You don’t give an objective critique or a good comparison. From what I’ve seen, Sean Schemmel is the better voice actor for Goku.
Reminder this is the same man who voiced Rolf in Ed edd and eddy
with the kamehacon news sean has reaffirmed himself as the subpar goku
Kelamis is obviously a great voice actor. But I'll always respect Schemmel more and not because I think he is better, but because he stuck to the role. In an interview recently, he did say that it's not a role he particularly likes but he wants to keep doing it so that the people watching the show don't have to go through abrupt voice change. Kelamis however left Goku's role to focus on other aspect of his career, which is fine btw. But it shows what he places above. I would've loved for him to do Goku's voice forever. But unfortunately not to be,
Videoz4u HD To be fair, part of him leaving the role was likely from being tired of the how terrible the dub was handled; They changed voice directors all the time, and it was just an inconsistent mess.
Schwarzorn Oh didn't know that. I certainly liked him better.

"OMG TORIYAMA HAND PICKED NOZAWA!!!" This actually is both true, and untrue. There is a common misconception in this toxic fandom, and that is Toriyama hand picked Masoko Nozawa for Goku. He did, for KID GOKU. Go watch the "We Are Goku" panel on youtube, Sean Schemmel asks Masoko her straight up why she kept the role as an adult. She said that the original plan was to CHANGE THE VOICE TO A MAN WHEN HE BECAME AN ADULT. But there were instances in Japan before when a character became an adult they kept the same actor, and since she had been the only Goku up until then, Toriyama said it was okay to keep her as adult Goku.
tbh Sean can do Goofy Goku pretty well

Sorry, but Schemmel is better. Not only that, but starting at 2:27, they screamed in very similar patterns, yet you criticize Schemmel and praise Kelamis.
+David Hoch Schemmel was grunting, when his body bulked up it sounded like something was hitting him, and then a short scream. Kai was just nonstop raspy screaming. Kelamis was growling, was more subtle but accurate when bulked, then had a smooth, long scream to top it off. They are EXTREMELY different, hardly any similarities. I don't know why I bother, I knew most people wouldn't recognize these small, but drastic details.
If they're so different, the details wouldn't be small. You're just coming up with descriptions that enforce your opinion. Anyone could reverse your descriptions when telling an uninformed person about the two actors, and they would agree. They're similar, so get over it.
+David Hoch Grunting versus growling, sounding like you're getting hit hard or subtle "ha!"s when transforming, that's what I intended to be the "small details", small things not many people would look into or notice. Aside from these, there of course are bigger details that differentiate them, but if you think they're too similar for you to point out these big or small details that make them distinguishable, then good day.
You're splitting hairs and trying to make two similar things sound like opposites. While it's an effective strategy to employ towards a mentally challenged crowd, it doesn't work against someone with more than a remedial understanding of the English language. So yes, good day.
"...trying to make two similar things sound like opposites". I said small and subtle, not exactly strong words geared towards making them appear opposite. Like I said, there are the small details, then there are the bigger ones. Small, like grunting versus growling. I'd consider one of the bigger contrasts being Kelamis sounding similar to Nozawa, where as Schemmel ended up with a Corlett sounding voice. Thanks for the comments.
Kelamis still has the best Kaioken yell, i wish i could hear his version of the SSJBlue +Kaioken
kaioken times ten!!!
No he does not. Goku in Kai have the BEST Kaioken yell.
0:52 Sean Schemmel taking more breaths is a good thing since the kaioken is supposed to be draining on Goku and he should be taking millions of breaths since it’s hard to pull of while Peter Kelamis takes two breaths and it seems as if the kaioken is barely draining and can be pulled out as a get out jail free card with no problems
Tbh it's less the actors fault and more so the dub director. Schemmel never even got to hear the original Japanese till much later, he had no reference. Listen to him in Kai and in Super and you'll notice how much better he's gotten.

+Gustavo Alvarez I appreciate all the points and how in depth you went to come to this conclusion.
Taking two breaths for a scream doesn’t make someone amazing or better. It made him strain his voice and crack a little due to him losing breath which actually makes it awkward. Sean even though takes more breaths, gives goku more character and ups the intensity of what he’s actually doing. And besides, copying another actor is one thing but improvising, making it your own, and adding quality to a work makes you the better actor.
I can understand not liking Sean, especially with all the controversies he's been in, as well as how he and the others tossed Vic out of FUNimation because of Monica Rial's false allegations.

Look At My Face! Yup. Except, you know...that a lot of people dislike it.
That's not how opinions work. I like Schemmel, but his and Kelamis's contemporary work are incomparable. Kelamis was way better.
Barndo M that's exactly how it works dumbfuck. Many people disliked it because they believe sean is better.
You completely missed the point. If everyone in the world but one person has an opinion, it doesn't mean those droves of people having that opinion "proves" the one person "wrong." Sean is not some infallible, amazing actor just because you watched him and not someone else play Goku as a kid. Sean's performance was simply not very good early on, and that's because he was inexperienced and poorly directed.
Sean Schemmel is a douchebag but I do prefer him as Goku. That was the Goku I would hear on Toonami midnight run. Kelamis is awesome though and he's the best son of shepard.
I think Peter Kelamis should voice Sonic the Hedgehog.
You are Dumb
Yep he sh0uld
Hell no
Peter Kelamis for me is the voice of goku
Dosent matter how many breaths he took when his voice sounds better. And also he never said kaioken wrong after that NONE CANON movie . Kelamis literally sounds like an abridged version
kelamis has the edge when it comes to energy and passion but I dont like his accent/voice as much as I like Schemmels.
Tobias Gustavsson I agree. Kelamis seems a bit better as an actor but Schemmels voice is much more memorable. In my opinion anyways.
PlayDae yes exactly! :D
+PlayDae watch rof
Holy Big Green, someone respect's others' opinions down here?!
I DEMAND TO KNOW WHAT WITCHCRAFT THIS IS!
Schemmel is superior you're just too off in your own world to see it lol
Kelamis is goofy and stilted as shit. Loved him as rolf, but not as goku.
Objectively, Peter is better.
Nuance, tonality, script, sound mixing, referencing Nozawa's performance etc. Sean found his voice for Goku, but he lacks in other areas. He doesn't sound as natural as Peter does. Toriyama picked Nozawa so she is the standard. Therefor Peter is the definitive english sounding Japanese version of Goku even over Ian corlett (did a great job too).
So, while I agree with most
2:26
"He sounds like he has a cold or is taking it up the ass"
He's got a heart dieses that is making it VERY difficult for Goku to function, going super just adds to the strain he's already experiencing so Sean actually did a half decent job conveying that strain
It doesn't, it sounds awkward. A heart disease doesn't make you sound nasally.
I like Sean better, but it's interesting that in the World's Strongest clip he sounds a lot like Nozawa. .
Masako Nozawa > all PERIOD !
Damn straight!
Sean Schemmel is the best goku voice actor .. Peter's voice sound disappointing like yamcha
..how, exactly?
Fun fact Peter is also the voice of Rolf in Ed Edd n Eddy
So this is the guy that played the weasel from Barbie Rapunzel
I do like Peter better as Goku, I feel he maintained the same spirit that Masako Nozawa created in her performance as Goku, where as Sean seemed to do his own thing and really changed the whole feel of the character for me.
Naaah , Sean's rendition of Goku's voice is EXACTLY what Goku 's voice is supposed to sound like , hands down
Ikr Goku is and will always be played by schemmel kelamis sound like a guy angry cause he started him self
Actually the creator of the series Akira Toriyama said that Masako Nozawa is how he imagined Goku to sound. It's fine if you prefer Sean but if you actually think that's how Goku should talk, I'm afraid you don't understand the character.
+David Verissimo trueeeeee
LukeMM95 He imagined kid goku.
Ripper 30 I'm pretty sure he was but when she was originally picked and imagined it was for kid goku.
Shemmel is the best voice actor, he takes breaths to make it more dramatic
Jake English Dramatic my ass
Kelamis sounds like a 12 year old skateboarder. I’m literally so thankful Schemmel is the voice actor they chose.
The big difference here is not the two voice actors performance it's the localisation.
The ocean dub here has a better grasp on the source material.
It's never been Kay-o-Ken
It's Kai-o-Ken. It's King Kai's technique not King Kay's.
Kaio-Ken being something the funimation dub sometimes gets wrong and sometimes gets right. It's just unnecessarily inconsistent.
