Well. I fancy myself a pretty shit musician, but I am really happy to know that apparently a lot of people couldn't hear the octaves in that riff and I could. Yay me.
This week we're having a look at Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin. And before you say it, yes, I know I'm using a clickbait thumbnail...it's a parody of all the usual 'bass riff everyone get's wrong' vids. Just a joke guys!
The pick is nice to use but if your a only finger style player you can keep both your pointer and middle finger together and use your nails as a pick. Very useful technique.
Wait so I learned this bassline by ear, and I actually got it right without any help? I'm not that terrible at bass afterall ! *sees a slap funk solo song on YT* Wait nvm
Apparently I was playing it right by accident. Perhaps JPJ was doing it that way for the same reason I did: to make what was essentially, when appearing live, a power trio, sound fuller. I sometimes add the 9th fret "B" on the "D" string as well. At the WAAAAAYYYY DOOOOWN INSIIIIIDE break, I also play the D and A in three note chords too: D-A-D, A-E-A root at 5th
Maybe someone else already mentioned this.. But I think he bends the 2nd note as well to a slight off note. People did the guitar riff wrong this way as well since instead of just playing the note Jimmy also slightly bends it on guitar too.
I've seen a few different videos discussing this, but the thing is, in a live situation no is going to really distinguish that, or probably even care as long as you are in the correct general area
This is a great song out right to just listen to but to turn it into a bass training exercise lesson is even better. It’s nice having great songs like this because they make you want to actually practice in the first place. 😎😉🎸🤘🔥🎶
Been playing this song on and off since the 80's and I never picked up on this technique. Oddly enough I'm currently in a band that just decided to add Whole Lotta Love to our setlist so I'm excited to add what I just learned here to it. Respect to JPJ and TY to Mark.
When Page plays the guitar riff he bends the D (5th fret) slightly sharp, in unison with the oped D string. THIS is what makes the riff sound like it does. Try it and hear the difference.
Thanks to youtube and isolated tracks I've learned I've played plenty of songs wrong! You can hear nuances on isolated bass that get buried in the mix.
Another top video. Makes a good solid riff sound beefy. Can you recommend a starting point for bass theory. I've been playing on and off for a few years now. And have never really got around the theory side. I kind of fell it holding me back these days. That and an 8 month old kid banging the strings! Cheers mate.
Liam Jenkins The lesson map over at Talkingbass.net has a music theory for bass series. My first YT lessons. They should do the trick. If you want more, check out the chord tone essentials course.
I will try to play Whole Lotta Love with fingers because I don t know how to use a pick please make a video about Geezer Butler or a second video about Steve Harris please !!!(sorry for my english.English is my third language
John M, try to play with pick also, it's another dimension of this wondeful instrument that deserves to be explored. I'm 47 and I started playing with a pick only 8 months ago. Don't wait like me to do something that you really could enjoy!
Throw a distortion pedal in the mix. You can take it a step further and throw a morley power wah in the mix also and bam you get that sound with fingers. Fret hand muting strings also works the same way as it does on guitar. All you gotta do is listen to anything cliff burton played on. And a little bit of geezer butler
one of the first things i learnt on bass as a teen and from ear and i got it right the first time. the wrong way everyone has been playing it just doesn't sound right
I always had it the right way .... Thanks for confirming. But I'm from the pre digital media generation, so I had it by ear, not copying everyone else errors LOL
I think I got it! I downloaded a pitch shifting extension for Chrome a little while back and must have clicked that by accident! I uninstalled and your normal voice is back!
@@GabbleRatchet I found playing with a pick, for me, was harder. I play guitar with no pick as well. I'm sure if I worked at it it'd be good but I just personally don't like it as much.
@@ianseymour4066Whatever floats your boat! I've only been playing for a few months, but I'm the opposite. Whenever I play my bass for fun, I reach for a pick instinctively. It feels more natural to me, and I don't even play guitar. I have to force myself to put down the pick sometimes because I'd like to be proficient at both styles. Edit: I'm pretty sure the guy in this video has a tutorial on here where he does the main Roundabout riff fingerstyle. Like, traditional fingerstyle -- not the flamenco thing Geddy does.

Same, i had it right, but I had seen those JPJ vids too
Yep it's all with the ear. If you heard it naturally, then you are a better musician than you think..........

Cassidy Malave this is my technique. Could never get used to an actual Pick
yeah i've always been playing with with my nail
I don't remember seeing you play with a pick before- pretty cool!
I used to be a snob but now I love playing with a pick sometimes hahaha
He said he was a pick player when he started out.
No player should ever tonally limit himself. Hating on picks is just a meme.
Ohhhh, I always wondered why it sounded kinda distorted, I just thought he ripped through the strings which made them rattle like that. Awesome Mark!

Nice.. I have been playing with a pick some as of late for that SOUND. This is a great example!

Nice instruction, Mark! So clear and concise.
I thought for sure you were gonna say Black Dog when you brought up JPJ.
lol. Expect the unexpected!

You just got a subscriber ;) 👍 I can’t believe people got this wrong

TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons will do mate. Thanks very much. Really enjoy your clear concise no bulls hit approach.
I played wrong this song for 20 years.Thank you Mark.
Really thorough lesson.. Great job. Thank you
Please do a lesson on "Stuck in the Middle" by Steelers wheels!
cool beans , I like using a pick its a blast.
You forgot a key detail: you have to bend the D on the A string to get that dissonance with the open D.
Pick playing tutorial? :D
Sounds silly, but I can't get the technique right
Coming soon!
Been playing forever( about 20 years) never was able with a pick
Brilliant lesson! Thank you!
wow.... all these years thought i had it... thx for the deep info man 👍right on the money
Man those tabs helped a tonne! Thanks!
Excellent! (Mark please make videos with dark background, it hurts my eyes).
Sorry about that. That's a whole part of the brand now (after 5 years) so it'd be pretty tough to change.
I think I agree with Marcelo. You should try making a video with a darker background and see the feedback.

Awesome

Same here... and I always played it with the plectrum ;-)
Add an overdriven B15 and bam. Classic
Great video, thanks! You made me understand how to play this damn riff correctly
Is the audio of this video dropped a half step? Voice seems a lot deeper than other videos!
Nope. Exactly the same.
I think I got it! I downloaded a pitch shifting extension for Chrome a little while back and must have clicked that by accident! I uninstalled and your normal voice is back!
Cool ! Merci !
Finally, a riff l always played right!
No more UA-cam livestreams?
Looking to move them back onto Facebook or something else (possibly dedicated webinars) because it was having such a detrimental effect on the channel
Great job!
nice bass. does he use effects on this?
You think you need a pick for songs recorded with a pick, but then you see geddy Lee play roundabout without a pick and create the same sound.
Okay, but why go through the trouble when you could just use a pick? If you like the challenge, that's fine, but it's not a crime to use a pick.

Much easier with a pick. I can get it pretty close with fingers, but it’s much harder.
Terrific! Thanks :-)
Hey Mark....over the electric grapevine lesson please all da way from india
nice thanks
How to do your intro... ???
Could u do lesson on that...
Aswin Krishna Already done it ages ago. Search Talkingbass Intro Lick
TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons Thank You for that... That lick is awesome...
very groovy one nice
I feel like it was more obvious to hear than most people claim
Idk not trying to be a suck up or anything
Right. I heard the bassline he though JPJ played and was like - you got that from the recording?!
I clicked and liked this only because of the NOT BILLIE JEAN part, I won't even watch the rest.
Mark may be the best out there
I absolutely suck at this
I don't know. Seems pretty obvious whole lotta love wasn't played with a low E.
It is though
@@talkingbasslessons you're right.
I'm thinking this guy is the only guy that played it wrong....and he just assumes everybody else played it wrong too
You're mistaken. Just take a look at how many poorly done bass covers of the same song there are on here on UA-cam.
The first one sounds nothing like whole lotta' love. Are people really that deaf to octaves?
you hve so wrong
