There's stuff called watercolor ground by Daniel Smith, you apply to a regular canvas and you can paint with watercolor...I have the watercolor ground but I've never tried it yet...dahhh!! Very interesting the watercolor canvas!!!💕💕
Lol, i have the ground, too... it's supposed to be (i havent tested yet lol) great for any surface you want to apply watercolors to... canvas, crappy paper, cloth, wood, etc. Sigh, one day I shall be able to sit up long enough to test (aka... PLAY) with it! But I'd love to see Emma trying things using various company's ground (amazon had 2 or 3 variations of ground from 1 company the last I saw - I bought transparent - but saw them in white & black as well, and white [at least] was available from several companies.)
I have tried the watercolor ground and it does work. It definitely is different than painting on paper. I applied it to a metal box panel, stamped it and then watercolored. It turned out really neat,
You can do it! I haven't used the Daniel Smith ground, but I did use the Golden Absorbent Ground which is similar. It is different than paper, I'd recommend doing a smaller test canvas first so you can see how it reacts before you jump into your main project
The transparent ground is my favorite. You can apply it on top of an acrylic transfer on top of a canvas or board, paint with watercolor and use India ink, fix it with fixative, then do more layers of acrylic and acrylic mediums on top. So, the ground is super useful in mixed media.
For how much you struggled with that landscape, it turned out pretty good. I was kinda laughing at your pain, but in the end I cheered when you pulled it together.
Watercolor boards/canvases have been around for several years, but not widely popular - I’m guessing because it is simply not like working on paper. Boards and canvases are prepped typically with a gesso or ground to make them absorbent similar to watercolor paper. But as you can see, just like prepping other surfaces with watercolor ground, it does not have the same reactive abilities and absorbency as paper. There are more steps artists must do to prep watercolor boards and canvases - like the dampen 10 minutes before... and using masking fluid over taping off (because of the texture inherent in canvas). And of course, watercolors don’t dry the same as “we” are typically used to with papers. I started finding the canvases/boards at Blick several years ago like you did, Emma. A most recent search (when I moved too far away from a Blick store to warrant buying less than a handful) turned up Hobby Lobby carries a watercolor canvas line! -and for decent price, too. I hope this helps you and your fans. 😃

Hi Emma , you can watercolour on almost anything if you coat your "canvas" with watercolour ground first. I have painted on plastic and even on my Otterbox case for my phone. Watercolour ground gives a much smoother surface on which h to paint but it works. I do prefer paper, myself.🎨🖌🇨🇦
I’m so glad you tried this watercolor canvas. I noticed a lot of pilling or dust or something. I haven’t tried watercolor canvas but I have tried regular canvas & that was a total bust! Thanks for teaching us as usual!
You can add "Watercolor Ground" (Daniel Smith makes a great one in white, off-white, black and maybe even transparent) to regular canvases meant for acrylic and oil, then use watercolor, ink, etc.. There's also Golden Absorbant Ground, Schmincke aqua ground and QOR cold press ground. You can apply the ground to almost any surface and it becomes suitable for watercolor and inks - any medium that's usually strictly used on paper. Just test it out before diving in - grounds do react differently than paper. It was a game changer for me, though, who use to be an avid acrylic painter and had a bunch of canvases I thought I couldn't use until I applied the DS watercolor ground to them! Cheaper than watercolor canvas, too. 😊 Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Liz Chaderton's book "Painting Watercolours on Canvas." I wish I had seen this last week. One of my grandsons asked me to paint something on a canvas and have it ready quickly. I normally only pay with oil on canvas. But I tried out a watercolor canvas. I was able to paint what he wanted but it was so difficult and I was not really fond of how it turned out. He seems to like it which I guess is the most important part. But from now on I’m going to stick with my arches watercolor paper! And I’ll save my canvases for my oil work thank you very much. Thanks Emma.
I think you do great landscapes. The thing I noticed was that you really can’t plan out what you are going to paint on the dry canvas. It’s like put color down and let it dry, then decide what to paint based on how the paint dried. Overall, the dry one turned out good. The wet one with the flowers seemed to work better. Your dog is hilarious. He let you know that just because you said so, he’s gonna bark and plead until you do give in and let him go play! Adorable. Great job on these paintings. 💕☀️🐶
As another reviewer mentioned try to get it right the first time. Attempts at layering often results in lifting the base color. This was my experience with some Daniel Smith watercolors that had been dry four days.

And then I will have to learn how to stretch my "masterpieces" onto a wooden frame. Thanks for having the courage to do this video 👍😊 At least I am somewhat prepared for a new experience!

Yeh, not really cool...lol. So glad to see this product and definitely going to visit Blicks to see what they have. Thanks again and love your videos!!

Your floral piece is gorgeous! I can tell it is not an ideal surface for landscapes, but it was still pretty! Maybe that watercolor canvas would be great for painting with gouache!

I liked the landscape. You are so brave to do this for the first time on camera. I’d like to do a landscape like that one along with you. But maybe not on canvas.
Daniel Smith makes a Water colour Ground to prepare surfaces for water colour. It's like Gesso for water colours and you can paint any canvas or wooden board with it to make the surface more absorbant.
@@EmmaLefebvre I've used this for a while and love it. Needs time to dry before you can paint on it but worth it. I have found that colour intensity is a bit less on this than on paper and a slight difference in technique but I think you've figured that out already. Love what you do :)
Love your channel but have never commented but today I have to say that many years ago I had a fellow artist actually paint with watercolor on regular primed white canvas and they looked pretty good yet I've never tried it maybe now I will
I’ve been watching & painting along with you since the very first lockdown. You are saving my sanity!! Lol. On impulse, I bought black coldpress paper. Do you think you could do a tutorial on black paper? Also I would love to see a tiny tour of your art studio set up😊
I have a video on both of those. Just type in my name “Emma lefebvre” and then “black paper” or “office tour” in the UA-cam search and those videos will pop up!
I really like the floral but I think if you kept at it, the seascape would have turned out very nicely. I just looked one up on Amazon and it says that it is primed with gesso. I don't think that works well with watercolor. Maybe a ground would be better. Maybe it's possible to apply a coat of Daniel Smith's ground over the gesso...don't know. I'm tempted to buy one now!
While watching this video, my dog Polly became quite concerned when she heard your dog speaking her language...LOL! She was talking back to him. Love your art, by the way. ☺️
Emma, in the video, it looked like the one you wet before starting (landscape) peeled or left little bits on it, but the floral that you did dry didn’t. Is that the case or were the paint colors more granular? BTW, I loved the florals, but I love all you do.
Thanks for sharing this test. Have you tried watercolor on the canvases that don't need to be framed? Loved the florals. The landscape looks good, you're too critical of yourself.
I like the idea of a watercolor canvas, cuz I dont like painting on a regular canvas with watercolor, for sure. Seeing you noticing the differences right away was very interesting and informative. And most importantly, I have a dog that speaks to me, too! LOL
I've seen multiple watercolor youtubers say that they've really liked Arches watercolor board but it isn't available anymore. To me it kind of looks similar on the video to the canvas you used but I don't have personal experience. Louise de Masi is the first one that comes to my mind. Maybe there are differences between manufacturers just like there are differences in papers. I've also seen watercolor ground used on surfaces that aren't meant to be painted on with watercolor. Very recent Emily Olson made a video where she paints on a cotton pouch with watercolor. I think she's also mentioned using watercolor ground before painting on a wooden surface but that was on ig
It looks like there is a lot of “pilling” of the surface as you paint. But then it seemed as it dried, it disappeared? Not sure I’ll try this. Paper gives me less stress, if it doesn’t turn out, so what? If it does, even if just in my sketch book, I can tear out, frame or print it.
@@dees3179 ~But gesso is essentially an acrylic paint (plastic), so it's not good to watercolor over. That's why it's not good to watercolor on regular canvas.

Thank you, I will definitely check them out!
I did a small bird on watercolor canvas and it turned on good. I want to try watercolor ground.
Thanks for sharing your experience, I'll try draw on a canvas 😁😁😁🥰🥰🥰
Big hug 🥰🥰🥰
While watching this video, my dog Polly became quite concerned when she heard your dog speaking her language...LOL! She was talking back to him. Love your art, by the way. ☺️
Emma, in the video, it looked like the one you wet before starting (landscape) peeled or left little bits on it, but the floral that you did dry didn’t. Is that the case or were the paint colors more granular? BTW, I loved the florals, but I love all you do.
That is amazing. ❤❤❤
This was awesome. I checked out a few of the suppliers that I use & Delta Art does carry them for a decent price.
If you use watercolor ground first, you can paint watercolors on anything. Canvas included.
Both the canvases are beautiful. What brushes are you using - they look perfect
Wow! Great job on canvas.
Was that "pilling" at the start of the landscape?
Omg he is so chatty 🥰
Your dogs so cute
I am so going to buy a few and try some watercolor canvases
Thank You 🙏
Interesting! But, I just like to see you paint, I am such a beginner I couldn't commit to "canvas."
Agreed. Honestly wasn’t a big fan of the canvas... was a bit stressful lol
The landscape looks fantastic! Feel free to post it to me if you don't want it....
Try the brand Raymar...they use Fabriano 140lb 100% cotton watercolor paper to make their watercolor panels.
Daniel Smith watercolour ground works on most surfaces , comes in white or transparent - then you can use watercolour on ordinary canvas
Gosh, I'm wondering if it (the landscape) could be washed off; with a sponge & running water at the sink, or maybe the eraser sponge?
Or gesso over it and apply watercolour ground.
@@dees3179 ~But gesso is essentially an acrylic paint (plastic), so it's not good to watercolor over. That's why it's not good to watercolor on regular canvas.
@@dees3179 ~ OHHH! Oops. I get it now...
Dearest Emma, They either do not know that these canvases exist or they are to expensive compared to paper. What do you think? Love Your Tutorials. Many Blessings to you and your family, ANNETTE QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA.❤🎉
Wish I could transfer your skills into me using a USB cable
Lol...too funny!!! If only it could be that easy, right?
The spund is so good. I wasnt sure if it was my dog or yours...lol
Bravo! A.masterpiece!
Would anyone happen to know the white and bronze round tip brush she’s using and where I can purchase? Checked her links and didn’t find that one…
Love your channel thanks for the share
