there are key towns in La Palma which are still evacuated due to gas levels from the volcano, so the effects of gas can be long term and should not be underestimated. thanks for the comprehensive overview today

Are you saying that even though the La Palma volcano has ceased its eruptions it's still emitting toxic gasses? . . . I didn't know.
Bushcraft Bear who I did follow while that volcano was active has had a bout of illness that forced him to return to Germany to get treatment, last I saw he was getting over it but in earlier videos he did look like he'd lost a fair amount of weight, and said that he had lung and energy problems also.

@@johnzuijdveld9585 Hi, yes also followed bushcraft bear and now people on the island..haven't checked for a while but Puerto Naos (major coastal resort) was still deemed unsafe to occupy a short while back due to gases coming out of the lava - reminds me to check how its doing but it was a ghost town and blocked off earlier this year

      @@global_nomad. Hey there!
I did a quick google and it's surprising that Puerto Naos which is s/west of the volcano site is suffering when most of the lava flow went s/east. I'm not contradicting you but am just surprised that the gasses are impacting there more than in other parts, I guess it's down to the prevailing winds.
I remember seeing posts from 'Global Nomad' in that time 😁

Tech. updates are good but generally I'm happy to take what more informed ppl. than me say and make a judgment on that.
As for La Palma, they had some localized devastations and I do feel for those that lost 'big time' but historically in many places w/wide ppl. keep resettling regions that they know harbors dangers.

There's Gylfi...our voice of reason! Glad to see your video...so helpful, and as always beautiful filming. I guess some of the other vloggers had no idea how hot the volcano and lava is...a few comments about the heat eating their drones 🙄. While using a zoom lens in place of a drone might seem anti-climatic, it is the safest way to view the action. This is one of those videos I will have to watch again to digest it all...Thanks, Gylfi, and travel safely.

It's more than the heat too--lack of oxygen and the air currents caused by the heat of the lava. During last year's eruption, a flock of birds made the tragic error of flying over the lava field. While they may have been flying high enough not to be affected directly by the heat, either the gases or lack of oxygen caused their deaths. One of the channels caught it --can't remember which one. Really sad. Drones are affected by lack of oxygen too just like helicopters which need it to fly.

@@tthappyrock368 Interesting...sad about the birds. Had not thought about the drone/helicopter issues. The gases are sulpher dioxide (?) I think...pretty dangerous to living things. Can't believe people were roasting marshmellows (or trying to) over the lava...not as poisonous as the vents, but I wouldn't take the chance. Thanks for your helpful comment.

I'm guessing either a new vent might open up in that area, or lava from the current eruption is using some of the old lava tubes, or the lava is heating up the old field via those tubes. Any one of those scenarios are possible. As we saw last year, a new vent opened up about 2 weeks after the first one, I think it was 2 weeks. Anyway, new vents opening up is very likely in the next few days or weeks.
It's also possible that the lava is using some of the old lava tubes that formed last year. I remember last year on some videos by this one area there was a tube that came from this one large hole somewhere on the old lava field.

Hello Gylfi, I'm glad you first talked about the splendid work that the search and rescue teams, SAR. do in safeguarding not only tourists but everyone..
Last yr. on a live webcam channel there was a link to a donation site for the Icelandic SAR. I thought this was a great idea and duly donated, I think many would also donate if they knew how to do so, would you include a link to a site where they could donate to them?

@@JustIcelandic I bet the SAR team might have a few interesting/funny stories to tell.
I know that the SAR are govt. funded but are they a totally volunteer group, what kind of training do they undergo and are they a totally separate entity or are they a division of perhaps the fire brigade or police force.
😁 If I can give you ideas then I feel a little blessed!
BTW, are you progressed any further in solving the mystery of that lake that loses and gains water without any known cause? . . Just wondering 😏
If you could include a link to a donation site for the SAR in all your 'about more' rather than just a 'one off' video then it is likely to be seen by many more ppl. I have asked the Reykjavik Grapevine and Gutntog to do the same because as I'm following this from the other side of the planet, I know many others are also, and it is in these changing times of calamities globally that the more fortunate of us can give others some assistance.
Thanks again for your great videos even if I don't see them all, the ones I see make me feel that apart from the cold (brrrrrhhhhhh!) I could easily love to live in Iceland. You even did a video on the cost of housing in Iceland which I found quite revealing.
On that note I think Iceland is in for a big rise in population soon as the world realizes that it's not easy living in a country where global warming is causing one catastrophic event after another.
Sorry this is a (bit ? 🤣) long, but I hope you had a relaxed, warm seat and a martini or a beer while you munched on your fermented smelly fish meal. 🤣

Thank you Gylfi! I must admit that I never really explored this area, apart from Seltùn where I go every time. Actually when I came last year to hike to the volcano the Icelandair captain kindly flew over the volcano, and by the way went over the whole area - I was stunned to see how beautiful these valleys and mountains are!
I agree with you, it's a mini-Laugar, well worth the visit!!

I have visisted Iceland on a number of occasions and have to say it's one of my favourite destinations to visit. Absolutely amazing country. I hope with the information you present in this video that the influx of visitors will not present undue problems on your search and rescue teams by doing silly things around the volcano.

I’m really looking forward to more on other geological features in the area - thanks!
When you’re back filming, and when you have time, can you please take some “before” drone shots of the various possible lava routes? We can see satellite footage online, but that’s a flat image and doesn’t really give a picture of how high the lava has to fill up, etc. It’d be a nice companion to your great maps.
I know that when the lava reaches any of these points we’ll get footage from all over, but it’s nice to have an image in one’s head ahead of time. 🙂

while everyone is looking at the current eruption it would be interesting to see what is going on around that area ie are the older cones showing any signs of heat ? , there has been reports of the hills over looking the eruption heating up and random moss fires , but its hard for ppl to have that over view and be able to see what and where and what the relationship is to the eruption , also whats happening to the old cone is that gassing? , is there signs of heat in the ground ? , how much has it fallen in with all the quakes ? , the eruption is interesting but its good to be able to see the wider picture and the effects the eruption is having rather than the focus being on basically a 500mtr sq patch.

You see all these little smoking places above the level of the lava in so many videos, is that the moss catching fire somehow? Or gases being released along faults leading from the dike?

I have already been to Iceland 2 times. Last time was last year in September. I saw the final eruption from Reykjavik in the night and hoped to go close in the next days but the eruption was gone by then. I hoped to see it two weeks later during my stay there but no luck, I just hiked the route. Now I spontaneously plan to fly back there alone, just for the volcano and would get relatively reasonnable ticket price in two weeks. I just hope that the volcano is still erupting because going to iceland still gets pretty expensive, even for a couple of days.

You mentioned the proposed airport at Hvassahraun, right where new lava may flow. When part of your airport's name is "hraun" meaning lava, and we are seeing new volcanic activity in the neighborhood, that might not be a good place for an airport! The Kona International Airport on the west side of the Big Island Hawaii, is built on top of an 1801 lava flow off Hualalai. When I was there I was told they weren't worried about any new eruptions because Hualalai is moving away from the Hot Spot, and Kilauea is where the action is. But Hualalai has moved only about 70 feet from the Hot Spot since 1801!
We have an airport built on top of a relatively recent lava flow.

    • @JustIcelandic
      @JustIcelandic  2 роки тому

In our case, the volcanos on the peninsula wake up every 800 yrs or so and during that cycle we will get frequent eruptions so it's a great risk to have it there, especially since we have plenty of building land..

In the United States search and rescue can be free of charge or can cost thousands of dollars depending on victims place of residence and the county. Also ambulance fees can be high and not covered by insurance. I know an old lady who took a bus to hospital after a bicycle accident with a broken jaw and arm to avoid ambulance fee in her area.

Want to go back to Iceland. Was there in 2017. Awesome. Want to visit the volcano, but due to an acquired muscle disease, I can no longer walk more than 500 meters. But I heard something about bikes in this vid and riding an electric bike I can do........tempting....

    • @JustIcelandic

Yes e bikes are fine for this, they are fixing the track up there so it only gets better, and then it's always possible to by a helicopter tour but I would recommend the e bike, feel the heat from the volcano, nothing like it :) and good luck

Thanks for the informative video. I've been subbed for a few months now and been following the progress toward the eruption closely. I'm now becoming quite curious about the lava flows from the lava lake at the vent. How far might they go, and how far can they get before freezing, where might the longest flow end up? Also I'm wondering what happened to the lava flows from the previous eruption and if they can be visited.
