FYI this coming from an instructor that teaches engines....you may want to rethink your oil choice. What you were saying about the cam & lifter wear in an engine is correct, but your engine utilizes roller lifters which aren’t as critical with needing the higher amount of zinc/phosphorus as a older style flat tappet camshaft. If you do prefer the higher zinc rating, there’s nothing wrong with the Mobil 1 High Mileage oil...it has a rating of 1000-1100 ppm zinc/ phosphorus which is plenty. The oil that you’re using has a rating of 1200-1300, which isn’t that much more. The other drawback to using what your showing is that it’s a mineral based oil and not a full synthetic oil, which won’t stand up to the higher heat and demand that you’re wanting from your engine. Also, with a full synthetic oil like Mobil 1 along with a good filter like a Wix XP, you can extend your oil drain intervals..it also protects your engine better...take my word for it, been doing it that way for over 20 years now.
A good oil for you would be Amsoil Signature Series 10w30. Or any of the premium synthetics. For your high temps, use 10w30 instead of 5w30. VR1 is a race oil, not meant for street. Race oils are meant for very frequent changes... they have very little if any detergents. Street cars need detergents to prevent sludge build up.
Also it helps if you take your finger and smear oil on your filter gasket. It makes it much easier to take off the next time. And WIX filters are the best for any high performance engine. Great video Kayla.
Totally agree with you, even with a cam I would only use a full synthetic oil, and as you said these newer engines have roller lifters, all that zinc is not needed.
I didn't know about the zinc information, thanks for that. Also, it's good to have a bit of anxiety when lifting your car and setting on jack stands, never get complacent about that especially about getting underneath it. Your life depends on it! You can never be too safe! Thanks for sharing.
I like to try to understand how it all works and WHY we change certain things on vehicles like oil. Being extra careful never hurts either. Thank you for your kind comment and support.
I have seen so many people struggle with getting a jack under their car because it's lowered. Driving up on two by fours and other random blocks of wood they have laying around and usually drive straight over them, they spit out from a heavy foot for the Honda front wheel drive guys or they just push it along never driving on top of the block. About 80% of them also own a set of race ramps but never had the idea to do what you did in this video. Brilliant! First time seeing your channel, whoever is responsible for your wheels deserve a gold star! Design and the color and the fitment are spot on!! It's super nice with the carbon and the wing, simple but looks clean as hell! Literally, you could eat off of the bottom of your car! LoL very nice
Nice magnetic drain plug. Another trick I like to use is to stick a few neodymium magnets to the outside of the oil filter to catch more gunk. You can just move them to the new oil filter upon the next oil change and keep using them.
Hey I hope my daughter's get into cars like yourself some day. I'll teach them whatever they'd like to learn! Great video, let's get some more maintenance vids on the instructional side for the girls out there without dad's to teach them.
Just an FYI, zinc is a non-ferrous metal, so it is not zinc that is stuck to your drain plug. It is some other metal wearing in the engine. Also, at 9:24 it looks like you are using a torque wrench to loosen your drain plug. Never use a torque wrench to loosen anything if you ever want to trust it to have an accurate reading again.
Nothing more beautiful than a pretty girl not afraid to get a little oil on her hands. You amaze me with how much you've learned about cars and are not afraid to tackle anything. Nicely done Kayla.

My dad was rushing doing an oil change on his cherokee one time and the gasket stuck to the pan. He blew the engine because the 2 gaskets built up so much pressure the filter popped. Good point 👍

You do a great job with the videos and doing work on your car. You can use a nice big piece of cardboard to put under your car. It makes it more comfortable to crawl under and lay on your back. And if you spill any oil or it splashes it won’t mess up your driveway. And your car looks and sounds great. Keep having fun. 👍🏻
@@KaylaRundle I also use shipping cardboard box. It's softer than concrete floor, cleaner, and I can easily wiggle in and out while under my car. When done, I just tuck it away in the garage for later re-use.
tip - use a solo cup when doing the oil filter, all he oil goes in the cup and mess free for the most part. Dont know the size of the filter on those cars but works like a charm if it fits over the filter while unscrewing it
I used to have a cammed 04 GTO, now i have a 14 CTSV. I have the bigger race ramps which are super nice. You dont even need a jack or stands with those for an oil change. Just drive up on there and you are good to go.
ive been using shell rotella T5 or T6. it's had zinc in it since before VR1. and it's better priced. i've been using it for years on all my vehicles and never had an issue.

You could add or should know that the wiping down and inspection of the oil filter gasket interface before putting the filter on is a really good idea. The most common way to destroy your engine is to not check for any leftover gasket or other material, you will have a leak and it might not show right away even. I have seen two of my buddies engines destroyed this way. What is worse, is both of them took them in and paid for the oil change service rather than DIY.
I moved from a house with a 2 post lift in the garage to a house with a low ceiling in the garage. I spent $1,200 on Quick Jacks and I use them every weekend. I can barely get a jack under my V or BMW but the quick jacks are awesome. In case the EPA is watching of course my car has cats! LOL
Wow you’re amazing. Love it when female are into cars and know so much about cars like yourself. So awesome that you can do your own servicing. Awesome car. Love the sound
Her oil choice is just fine. Dont have to high dollar synthetic oil in anything if you change your oil frequently. synthetic is only made to go long intervals. plenty of tests online that goes over this whole delimma.
I would recommend looking for leaks AFTER you have started the engine. If your oil filter is not sealing properly, it won't start leaking until you have oil pressure.
Good piece of advice. I recommend ALWAYS checking before you start your car. You never know if someone reached under and loosened your oil filter for fun 😧
@@KaylaRundle The problem with the oil filter is it can be tight, but the gasket didn’t seat properly. I also had a coworker that failed to notice the old gasket was still stuck to the engine. When he installed the new filter it was “double gasketed” and it started leaking as soon as he started the engine.
Also prime your oil pump by holding your foot on that gas and clutch while starting the car for a few seconds. It will prime everything. I do it after I haven't driven my vette for a few days.
Pro tip after changing the oil fire the engine for about 10 - 20 seconds and recheck it. Even if you put the manufacturer recommended amount in its still a good idea to recheck
hello,!!!just a suggestion!!!!!when changing the oil in your engine, the car must be in a level place and lift only the wheel on the right side so that all the oil is directed to the exit of the crankcase left side to extract the maximum of used oil, hugs from Portugal

A big hello from Australia Kayla🙃 I just watched your video a 1st for me as I just happened to stumble across your site.. and someone famous once said I'll be back 😉
you should always use great oil from the best oil stocks like redline or royal purple or the best amsoil. they use additives that quite down the lifters and other parts in the engine.
what in the only fans is going on here and why these videos that happen on a chill sunny day with a quite background sound have a special place in my heart
I hope my daughter gets into cars like you. We're in AZ as well and I think I've seen your Camaro around town before. I've owned a '78 and an '81 and hope to have another someday but it's cool to see supped up Camaros around town here in AZ!
Changing the oil is the beginning, next you'll do your own brake job, tune up, water pump, alternator etc etc. Good choice in oil and filter. Good neat job and video too. Give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it. Cheers.
I’ve already done most of that. Sometimes it’s hard to go back and explain exactly how to change oil. I’ve changed my own cam, springs, Coilovers, headers, axles, brakes, etc
Thank you so much. I just got a Stock '15 Camaro. It's my first car so seeing your perspective AND letting us newbies know if you're stock use this instead was out of sight 😏 And you're gorgeous 😎 win win scenario
For those who have a low car and no race ramps, using an old set of brake rotors will do the same thing for getting the car high enough to put a jack under and cost $0 if you keep them when doing a brake job, and they don't take up much room in the garage for storage.
I don't like how your jack stands are holding your car, since the place you choose at the botton is flat and only the tips on both sides of the stands are holding the car up. I use a couple of pieces of rubber, from truck tires that i found on the road, to put in between the jacks and the car, it gives better grip and also avoid any scratch underneath. Be safe and thanks for the video!
Yes! I picked up 4 of the vr-1 10w-30 from advance 10 years ago and there api SL like how mobil 1 high mileage was until 2015. It's funny how motorcycle oil went from sj to sl and sm.. they dont need friction modifiers to make it slippery since the oil is shared with the tranny.
Great job if you ever get a chance one day somebody with you before you put the oil filter on and you feel the engine up with the fresh oil give it a quick fire up and shut it off you’ll see the old the leftover dirty oil come out where the oil filter is if you put a new oil filter on without oil in it the first dirty oil from when you start the engine go straight into your new filter just to something I learned over the years to you’re very inspiring and you’re very passionate about your car and it’s in my favourite colour white and the Camaro looks great and you look great too Don
I suggest Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic. I used it in a Chevrolet Malibu and the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine survived well with minimal wear on Cams and other surfaces. It ran 432,000 miles on the original engine. The only reason for car failure is the Automatic Transmission finally failed.
Kayla there's nothing better than being able to do services Yourself. Awesome content 👍💯 Aussie Fan I run Penrite full synthetic with extra Zinc. 10 W 40. Always great oil pressure. I change it every 5000 kims.
I always have great oil pressure as well. Whatever works for your individual build is perfect! I’ve always wanted to make a trip to Australia. One day for sure 🥰
Great video. One thing i do is, i use an oil drain container that catches and holds the oil from 2/3 oil changes and then just take the container to Autozone and recycle it. That way you don’t have to stand there and try to fill 8 bottles up and try not to get the oil all over the place. It’s much easier. 👍🏻
I just randomly came across your channel, great content! A great thing to help you out with lifting your car, since it is low, is getting a quick jack as well! keep up the good work!
I would use a 6 point socket to prevent rounding the drain plug. Zinc is nonferrous so anything sticking to that magnet is coming from somewhere else. Zinc is being used in your oil as a lubricant.
Also, there's a product called I think it's liquid gloves or something like that that'll help keep the grunge off your hands with "gloves". If you change your own oil that often you may look into one of the drive over quick jack systems. A little spendy(like $1600) but so easy, locks into place and would probably help with the anxiety which is priceless
Are you running a flat tappet? That's the only reason to consider zinc in oil. If your running hydraulic/roller tappets, zinc is not as important. Nice ride....and sounds great!!
You should get and use a 6 point socket. Although you’re using the right size socket. If it’s ever on too long and tight, in can strip. Just a preference and good habit, if you want the drain plug/bolt to look new for a long time.
That wouldn’t too big of a deal. This one is aftermarket and worst case I could bug another once it gets beat up. Thank you for the info though, always good advice!
You might be able to find actual ramp so you can just drive onto to fully lift your Camaro up so you don't have to jack it up and put it on jackstands. Also, have you thought about using K&N billet aluminum reusable oil filters? 😉👍🏼
Great video! One thing I noticed (and I didn't read all the comments), it looks like you didn't replace the crush washer on the oil drain plug? If you did replace it, my apologies. Keep up the good work!
If using zinc oil makes you feel better then do it, not really necessary with roller lifters, I would stay with what the factory recommended that is how they designed the engine, unless you plan on putting on a power adder the zinc might help with the higher cylinder pressure
Kayla, love your beauty and charm....enjoy your vlog as well !!! Please get some Esco jack stands and wheel chocks. Safety glasses would be a good idea also. Too bad you don't live closer....I have a huge garage, 4 post lift and every tool you could think of. Stay safe! Keep making videos....GREAT STUFF.
Good that your using jack stands for safety first! Get some of those black mechanic gloves. Old engine oil is toxic and you don't want those toxins getting into your bloodstream. Get some safety glasses to protect your eyes. You don't want any automotive fluid getting into your eyes. Safety shoes also. Even if you drop a wrench or a screwdriver. It can hurt you. There's a product called magic creeper. It can help to move around under the vehicle. Wear old clothes too. Oil is difficult to get out of clothes. Keep up the good work. Your helping other people to learn more about their vehicle and how to do routine maintenance.
Great job! Only thing i would nick pic on is tightening the oil filter hand tight. Usually you want to hand tight until snug and then go 3/4 to a full turn more. The oil filter should have instructions on the filter. People lose motors because they loosen up, of course you do not want to over tighten either.
Yes this is true. I have insanely strong hands where most people can't get nuts off after I only hand tighten them. I once tightened it an extra half turn after hand tightening and it took us 8 hours to get the oil filter off. I show the image in the video. Just hand tightening as much as I can go has always worked perfect for me ever since.
@@KaylaRundle do what works! I have a 2011 Gt500 that I had a shop change my oil. When i went to change it myself it wasnt tight. So just be careful. I hear u on being too tight. I usually use a metal band clamp sized for the filter that you attach to a 3/8 drive rachet with a 3/8 drive extension. I like how you did it safely with jack stands. Also you can buy oil in gallon containers that would make it easier to dump the old oil in. Thanks for replying!
Hi Kayla tighten up oil filter good Soo smart,, they should pay you Turn your front wheel to one side and stick the jack in the opening to the frame I have the same jack problem
I always forget to turn the wheel as I let it down and my side skirts have cracked on the jack. The Race Ramps stopped me from running into any problems 🥰

VR1 is a race oil, not meant for street. Race oils are meant for very frequent changes... they have very little if any detergents. Street cars need detergents to prevent sludge build up.

I use a couple of pieces of rubber, from truck tires that i found on the road, to put in between the jacks and the car, it gives better grip and also avoid any scratch underneath. Be safe and thanks for the video!
Free tip about the oil filter. Wrap a plastic bag around it once it's loose so you don't make a mess.
Awesome. Next time I want to punch a hole in the bottom of it so it can drain out.
@@KaylaRundle that's another good way. Also punching a screwdriver through the side of it, if it ever gets stuck.
Very interesting!
She is just so awesome I’m glad I found her.
This is awesome to see working on your own stuff. Sounds so good to.
Good to see a young woman doing you own oil change nice job beautiful car
Your Camaro sounds wonderful, and thanks for the thorough oil change. Great work
Thank you! I try my best!
Amsoil signature series, I use it on all my customers it's the best oils
I'm so happy that it's so easy and you can do it yourself. I love my camaro
It's super easy. I love my Camaro too:)
Suggest fumoto drain plug. One less bolt to take off. Great information below. Rethinking my oil choices when it comes time for me to change again.
I use larger Race Ramps so I can change my oil without having to jack up the vehicle. Makes changing my oil much simpler. Highly recommend.
What if car rolls back
Kayla so beautiful to see you do your own work on your car 💯💯💯
Beautiful Camaro! Those wheels are perfect!!
Thank you so much!!
Beautiful and not afraid to get her hands dirty. AWESOME 😉
Yes !!you are a car person!!,and be proud of that!!!,Nice Job,the" maro" sounds awesome!!
I love all this stuff!! Not stopping any time soon! Thank you
@Kayla Rundle who is the gearhead in your family,?(besides you, lol)
I suggest Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic. I used it in a Chevrolet Malibu and the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine survived well with minimal wear on Cams and other surfaces. It ran 432,000 miles on the original engine. The only reason for car failure is the Automatic Transmission finally failed.
My builder recommended me run that same oil but I run the synthetic version. On my built forged turbo LS3.
Very good oil
I got it recommended as well and have never had a problem with it! So it just be good stuff 👍🏼
@Kayla Rundle yeh! I love your fifth gen!
@@davidtranmedia5112 Thank you so much!!
@@KaylaRundle I truly hope that you make it over here Kayla. Have a beautiful day 🌷 I really appreciate you taking the time to answer me 🆒🤟🥰
The high zinc is only needed for the metal on metal wear of flat tappet cams. Why not eliminate a step and get taller race ramps?
If you get jack anxiety, grab some quickjacks. They are a game changer.
Geez. How I don't miss those days of trying to slide under the car getting filthy dirty. Now I have a 4 post lift in my garage. :)
Great job on your oil changed and I also learned something new today about the difference kind of oils is there out 💪🏻✌🏻❄️
Glad I could teach something! Thanks for your support!
Great video. One thing i do is, i use an oil drain container that catches and holds the oil from 2/3 oil changes and then just take the container to Autozone and recycle it. That way you don’t have to stand there and try to fill 8 bottles up and try not to get the oil all over the place. It’s much easier. 👍🏻
That would be much easier. For the longest time I didn't even have a drain pan, we'll get there eventually.
Absolutely cool ! 🔥
Thank you!
One of your best videos so far...please keep them coming .
Thank you Patrick!! More to come 🥰
I just randomly came across your channel, great content!
Flat tappet on the street is like from the 1960's!
Nice job, but next time you should DEFINITELY use wheel chalks behind the rear tires!
Yes another great tip 👍🏼
@@KaylaRundle Wheels chalks are really important. If your handbrake fail, your car will slide to the rear. Very dangerous........
Wheels and ckalk have nothing to do with each other.
@@cowvs Wheels and chalk have nothing to do with each other.
@@cowvs 'Chocks' not chalk.
If you hold the OIl containers the other way the oil will flow smoothly out.
The white looks really clean! Love that car!
Thanks I have 370Z that needs oil change. Can I make an appointment, you do it great.
Too bad you don't live closer....I have a huge
garage, 4 post lift and every tool you could think of. Stay safe!
Keep making videos....GREAT STUFF.
Great video , I currently use Penngrade 10 40 in my LS 408 stroker. I may need to check out this VR1 stuff. Thanks
Keep up the great grind Kayla 💪. Love to support girls and their cars. Your looking beautiful as awlays. Camaro looking and sounds sick as always 👍❤😍
Thank you so much for your support 🤍🤍
Camaro sick, got covid
Keep up the great work, show people the RIGHT WAY TO DO JOBS
Nice Camaro, nice oil change and absolutely nice you! Thanks 👍
Thank you for the support 🥰
Hi Kayla tighten up oil filter good
Soo smart,, they should pay you
Turn your front wheel to one side and stick the jack in the opening to the frame
I have the same jack problem
I always forget to turn the wheel as I let it down and my side skirts have cracked on the jack. The Race Ramps stopped me from running into any problems 🥰
WOW!! great job ! first time seeing a woman doing oil changes
Very very nice she knows a lot about lubrication stuff SuperTech oil still the best oil tho
Could use an oil application bottle to oil the filter gasket.
I came here to see if she needed any help washing up after she was done 🙋♂️
