The Honda NSX-R GT's "Snorkel", or I like to call it the "unicorn" is quite literally a unicorn. Honda only made 5 for homologation reasons but since it was so late in the production cycle (2005), no one wanted to buy it. Only one was ever sold to Yoshiaki Yoshida (CEO of DHC Corp) and it sat in BINGO Sports showroom until it was sold just earlier this year to an anonymous buyer.
Wow! That’s fascinating. There’s so many stories like that with unique JDMs. Can you imagine how fast they would sell now!? The more I look at the car the less weird it looks and the more I love it.
@@JDMArchives The funny part is the "unicorn" isnt even functional on the retail version. It's just a plastic snorkel that they stick onto the rear windshield. The NSX-R that Honda use in the JGTC has plastic windshield so they can cut a hole for the snorkel.
The term "Rear Hatch Garnish" by Honda is technically 100% correct because that "Intake" has zero function and just stuck on the rear glass & not connected to the engine at all. It really was a garnish. 😂 It's there so Honda can use it to homologate & modify their NSX-GT race car to use an actual F1-style intake set-up in JGTC/Super GT.
Hey mate, the century isnt a flag pole. Its a parking pole which extends up and down and has an illuminated light on the top for you to see where your front of your car is
Someone else commented that too but as a parking sensor. I’ll have to try confirm that, as it’s really common to have a Japanese flag attached to it, and it can be searched that way in the auctions too. Thanks for the info!
@@JDMArchives Yeah, definitely a parking aid. It used by shorter people who can't see where their bonnet/hood ends. As a Brazilian living in Japan, I can now understand partially why they would have stock tire chains as an optional Depending on where you live, you can get quite a bit of snow. Not enough to get you grounded, but enough to be hard to drive. Nowadays, it's easy and cheap to buy snow studless tires and get them changed for the winter, but I guess there were not as many cheap or accessible options back then I lived in Tokyo and now live in Chiba. Neither regions get enough snow, but even 2 inches would be enough to require chains, especially on a high power RWD car 😅
@@JDMArchives forgot to add that people here will run winter tires during the whole winter here in Chiba, and we got snow only 2 days. I think they always rather be safe than sorry haha
The first thing that comes to mind when I talk about weird options would be the Airfantasy smell-o-rama thingy for the Toyota Sera. They were little casettes/plugs that you plugged onto a single din apparatus and it produced smells. Also there's the 87/88 CRT touchscreen for the Toyota Soarer, it let you control the ride height to some degree and some other functions and it was quite responsive for something of that nature and vintage.

I think the auto spoiler was included on the RZ models by default. They are certainly there more often than not from what I have seen. However the mechanism sits where most front mount intercoolers usually sit, so its almost always removed.
Could have been but of the RZs I’ve seen none of them had it. And just a blank button cap in the centre dash where the manual deploy and auto button would be. Ive had two SZs, both of which had the same blank button caps. Thanks for the comment I’ll pay more attention on the next rz I come across!
Those shoes looks rad, goofy racing loafers, they had black color too. Rescue scissors are another wild option. Show chains are more for ice and compacted snow. Japan has seasons and most of the year its not snowing and its hill country, chains are made for hill climb. In case heavy snow the roads are not immediately cleared off it. They are in case I get stuck item.
Wow not sure I’ve seen the black colour in brochures! Yeh that makes sense, so more if you get caught out with changing weather conditions. Thanks for the info!
The GD-series STI cars had a double-element spoiler, as well (and it was standard on the STI in the US and Spec C in Japan). It's easy to overlook, but the base of the STI spoiler is effectively the 'main' element and geometrically very similar to the WRX spoiler of the time.
Yeh I can see how you could count that as a double spoiler. There’s actually a few double spoilers out there on JDM cars if you dive deep enough. Thanks for watching
I have heard that Mazdaspeed did a collaboration with snap-on for a travel tool set. I think it had a couple of small ratchets and sockets as well as a spark plug socket
I believe Hokkaido, the northern island, gets some of the highest levels of snow in the world, so the chains make a bit of sense. It's still a bit bizarre, though, that you'd be out in snow in rwd low-slung sports car but I guess in a pinch they might be the difference between being stuck in the snow and crawling home.
Great comment! Some other comments from people who live in very snowy areas said exactly that, it’s not so much that you go out driving with snow chains but more that the weather conditions can change fast and then you need them to get home. Hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
To add to the active aero thing, r32 skylines definetly had option extra active front splitter, my own gts4 type m had it when I brought it, wasn't working but was on the car still, has the buttons still just on the dash behind the steering wheel to raise and lower it
Interesting video. I would have added something like the Caldina skylite roof, 92 Corolla 3 fragrance indash airfreshner, Modelista body kits etc. So many weird things for JDM cars.
Many Japanese mountain roads have mandatory tire chain policies in the winter months. Weather in the mountains, no matter where you are, can change rapidly, and unpredictably Here in Canada in the rockies, and canadian shield mountain ranges, we have the same rules. Chains or studded tires, or your life is on the line.
R32 skylines had active aero even on non gtr versions, pacific coast auto exported a blue 4 door automatic one with this feature still fitted and working
These snow chains are surely a weird option for a sports car but you generally use them on ice and ice is flat, ground clearance doesnt really matter (when it snows, snow trucks go through the roads to remove snow but ice can still be on them). They grip better than tires do because they bite into it rather than slide but idk, I hear that chains mounted like that can slip. I also don't live in such climate by the Polish sea up north but in Polish mountains on the south these are always a good thing to have. It's better to have them than not, calling a tow truck is costly and annoying and these can pull you out of troublr. It's basically something like a battery jump starter. You generally don't need them but you can later regret not having them. Though I daily an eg6 now, I used to drive my mk2 vw jetta all the time which is slammed to the ground. I would drive it through the snow and stuff in winter (it snows for a week maybe now but still). There are always some ice patches. One time the light turned green and I would just wheelspin in place even though I had snow tires, I spinned so much the light has already turned red. I think I solved it by using just the clutch
Generally I don't write that much but I like your content and well, its easy to see that you like quirky stuff. In Poland jdm is huge but more like in its tuning style and drifting, e36 bmw though not jdm, are really often modified in such way, I know many people with cars such as these with these decals and stuff. If you havent seen such cars then you will have fun lol. ua-cam.com/video/cG1pkelrP-A/v-deo.htmlsi=qh2rvzpkoJ0efppV ua-cam.com/video/cG1pkelrP-A/v-deo.htmlsi=qh2rvzpkoJ0efppV
Interesting, it’s definitely used as a flag pole if it’s not one! Also searching on Japanese auctions as Toyota Century Flag Pole, finds this part. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMArchives It's a parking assist (called a Parking Pole - literally translates to that if you read the page you show in the video) - these were commonly available (but rarely purchased) in the late-80's/early-90's JDM cars as option items. They are always located diagonally to the driver's seat. Search for Century Parking (or Fender) Pole and you'll get more hits - brand-new they run about $500 USD.
You missed a few cars that had active aero. The R31 Skyline, R32, and R33. (not the GT-R's) On the R31, there was a front spltter that was offered on the GTS-X and GTS models for downforce (correct me if i'm wrong) Same goes for the R32 GTS-T Type M and GTS4 and were only featured on the turbo only ones. These are pretty rare too and were usually ditched because it took up space for the intercooler, plus people putting on a bigger intercooler as well as aftermarket aero making these very rare. And for the R33, the times the splitter was really featured were i belive only the Series 1 GTS25-T Type M's. Same thing goes with people ditching them for more mods and aftermarket aero making them rare as well. This is all from memory so again correct me if I'm wrong with some of this
That’s incredible information you’ve got there. It’s fascinating how they didn’t make it on to the GTR or allow any room for it. Awesome to see it on 30+ year old cars
I´m sure not only the Century had factory option curtains. With the Q45 (yes it was also sold in Japan) you could also get a golden and a diamant car key!
I have spotted curtains in a few other brochures looking back, such a cool feature. That sounds amazing! Haven’t seen one of those keys. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMArchives Yes. And the curtains (stock) in the Elgrand are very fast. For privacy. 😁 And those keys were expensive. But it was also the bubble era. Money was not the biggest concern back then. 😁
Quite a bit of guesswork in the video... the NSX-R had the (completely non-functional) snorkel to make the bodywork legal in JGTC/Super GT racing. Without a production model having the feature, it would not have been available in the racing series at a certain point. Another car that had a similar homologation feature was the Celica GT-FOUR which had a completely disabled air injection system between the air bypass valve and the exhaust manifold. Mitsubishi had similar inactive systems on some EVO models.
The most likely reason the offer the snow chains is due to the amount of snowfall in northern Japan. I live in Aomori prefecture and its one of the highest snowfall areas in the world.
Im from NY and always drove JDM cars. U needed chains way back in the day for traction I've never seen them on anything past like 70s model rear wheel drive and zero traction control or aid.
Another comment mentioned that to, so it very well might be true! Ill have to look into it. Its amazing how many crazy parts there are on JDMs. Thanks for watching.
I'm on my knees please please please in your next jdm weird extras, 94 integra exclusive headlight liners. Adding color and or shape to the already strange bubble headlights
for the chains where mostly sold with GT cars as there market at the time was for uppercases people who like to go skiing. now im not presenting this as fact but from the view point of someone who has studied the options and advertisement side of the JDM world. hope that clears that up
I'm french and I also noticed some strange japan only option for some french car like the "La Poste" edition for the Renault Kangoo who have the livery of the french post Kangoo, but it's possible to buy it in Japan by anyone. It also have a Megane RS Gendarmerie edition with the Gendarmerie livery. The Gendarmerie in France is a police section that we can't copy there livery. I always thinking myself, what I risk if I Import a factory Renault Megane RS Gendarmerie edition from Japan to France and use it ? Do I need to remove the livery ? And I also notice a WRC kit for the Peugeot 206. It's different from the well know Dimma kit. The japan kit is more accurate with the WRC car than the Dimma. It cool be cool to highlight non Japan car exclusive japan car option 😅
those are not flag poles, are parking pole, they are really common on japan, shows to the driver where is the corner of the bomper. usually is on the oposite corner to the driver
Thanks, someone else mentioned it earlier in the comments too. They seem to just be very commonly used as a flag pole on the century’s, so common that they can actually be searched as a flag pole in Japanese auctions. Bizarre… thanks!
@JDMArchives you are right about some people using that as a flag pole. But it is only one side. That is not an official use. If you put a flag there will be smearing the flag on the side of the fender or in front of the headlight. The pole is too short for That's is quite irespectfull. The centuri flag poles are a pair. And go over the fender in botsidesde. You can find the images on Google.
@JDMArchives you re right about that, but it is not an official use. The flag pole is too short and only is on one side . The flag would be hitting the side of the car or the front of it, which is a real no-no in a diplomatic setting. You are dis respectfull. The centuri has two positions for the flag. One is two posts over the fenders. An Imperial use is one pole in front of the hood . You can search that in Google
There's so many wrongfully "valuable" parts that if someone took 2 seconds to research would realize are available on far cheaper cars for almost free if not actually free. For instance, people have those exact same part number "RX7 Nardis" fitted on EVERY mazda MX-5 of the same year that was sold side by side with it. Not just in Japan, that "Nardi RX7 wheel" was sold on EVERY MX-5 globally between 2000 and 2002. In 2003 they quit putting the Nardi badge on, but the wheel remained exactly the same design for the 2004 to 2005 (I suppose making it less desirable but nevertheless). The same story for the R34 Syline steering wheel and S15 steering wheel. Same wheel. Same outter rim. One has a Harry potter lightning bolt, the other says Nissan (meaning if you wanna spruce up your S13 or S14, you can have that sexy 3 spoke without the Nerdy S15 logo wrongfully on it and a very relevant Nissan logo in it's place). This SAME wheel that some people sell for over $500 just because they knew it came on R34s and 15s are also standard in Nissan Primeras, Sentras, Stageas, and other obscure and bottom trim vehicles throughout the lineup. And a similar hilarity is mimicked by Toyota. Everyone wants the sexy 3 spoke "late model A80 Supra" steering wheel.. The same one that is sold in virtually EVERYTHING aswell, including Celicas, Currens, Corollas, and again, every other obscure Toyota from every bottom trim level. There's plenty in the junk yard in perfect condition that would otherwise be worth nothing. Like the S15, it also has a special version of it for the Altezza, again being the exact same wheel but "written on" with the letter's ALTEZZA so it sort of only really looks good in the car it came in.
Wow great info! I’m fortunate enough to have owned a few R34s over the years and they do share the same wheels to some extent like your describing but there is always idiosyncrasies that need altering to be authentic to the vehicle. For example both GTRs were series 1 GTR VSpecs and hence had red stitching all outer black with GTR logo central which is different to the R34 GTT I have. There’s no reason why you couldn’t get the logo changed, the stitching redone etc. etc. like your describing and save yourself a lot of money. Great comments, thanks.
@@JDMArchives Valid. and likewise, my Stagea wheel came with factory red stitching and genuine leather, but had tiptronic switches where on other wheels (like R34) there would be plastic blanks in either black or silver. Early wheel designs also had 1 piece wheels where the spokes would meet the airbag instead of having blanks altogether. but all of them are based around the same wheel model.
Shocked how inexpensive some of these options are to buy today as used or NOS. BMW comrades know all too well the cost of buying any cool period after market or rare factory extras. No $200 century curtains or parking poles.

I think I may have seen that before, so many hidden gems. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMArchives of course my horse
I believe Hokkaido, the northern island, gets some of the highest levels of snow in the world, so the chains make a bit of sense. It's still a bit bizarre, though, that you'd be out in snow in rwd low-slung sports car but I guess in a pinch they might be the difference between being stuck in the snow and crawling home.
Great comment! Some other comments from people who live in very snowy areas said exactly that, it’s not so much that you go out driving with snow chains but more that the weather conditions can change fast and then you need them to get home. Hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
To add to the active aero thing, r32 skylines definetly had option extra active front splitter, my own gts4 type m had it when I brought it, wasn't working but was on the car still, has the buttons still just on the dash behind the steering wheel to raise and lower it
I also had a few people suggest that the r31 has it too. Thanks 🙏
Interesting video. I would have added something like the Caldina skylite roof, 92 Corolla 3 fragrance indash airfreshner, Modelista body kits etc. So many weird things for JDM cars.
That air freshener should definitely have made it onto my list 🤣
Old Nissan Skylines GTSR R31 also had active aero
Thank you!
Many Japanese mountain roads have mandatory tire chain policies in the winter months.
Weather in the mountains, no matter where you are, can change rapidly, and unpredictably
Here in Canada in the rockies, and canadian shield mountain ranges, we have the same rules.
Chains or studded tires, or your life is on the line.
Wow didn’t realise it was so serious! Thanks
The Skyline R31 also have a front mobile aerodynamic equipement
Thank you! A few people mentioned that in the video
R32 skylines had active aero even on non gtr versions, pacific coast auto exported a blue 4 door automatic one with this feature still fitted and working
Wow I didn’t know that, from reading other comments R31s had active aeros to, haven’t confirmed that yet. Thanks for the extra info!
So the umbrella thing didn't start with Rolls Royce then.... Thanks for posting it must take a lot of work to do this 👍🏾🇺🇸❤️🔰🏎️
I spent wayyyyy too long making this video! But comments like this make it worth it. Legend!
Not mentioning the Nissan oem car cleaning kit options or the factory glove box drink cooler was criminal
Might make it into part 2! So many cool quirky options to choose from.
Could you please do one for the Altezza/Altezza Gita? I've seen a few options that are seemingly quite rare (even on the Lexus models)
I’ll have a look what I can find. Thanks for watching the vid 🙂
That flag pole is a parking assist, showing the driver where the car ends. many jdm cars got it.
The r31 skyline alsow had active aero btw
R31 is underrated. That must be one of the earliest examples of Active Aeros on a JDM. Thanks!
@@JDMArchives The R31 is one of my favourite generations! Midsize sedan with that many features in the 80s.
And those keys were expensive.
Thanks, that would explain why there is zero description for the rear hatch garnish in the brochure by Honda… other than its name.
What about kei cars?
I know the suzuki hustler has a basket inside the passenger seat
That sounds insane. Getting a list stopping at 10 was honestly near impossible 🤣
Maybe it is also fun to do a video about the not so well known Nissan 350z version, the 380RS, a Nissan 350z with instead a 3.5V6, a 3.8V6
That’s a great idea. Thanks legend.
I’ve got a set of snow chains in my car, it’s never been near to being snowy enough for me to ever put them on my car.
That’s funny 🤣 just in case I guess!
The most likely reason the offer the snow chains is due to the amount of snowfall in northern Japan. I live in Aomori prefecture and its one of the highest snowfall areas in the world.
Wow! Always good to hear straight from people who actually live in the snow. Thanks for watching
the r31 skyline also had active aero. i belive it was a front lip
Thanks! Great info
Im from NY and always drove JDM cars. U needed chains way back in the day for traction I've never seen them on anything past like 70s model rear wheel drive and zero traction control or aid.
That’s interesting, it’s totally unheard of technology is most of Australia! Thanks for watching
200th sub!
Thanks so much! I Can’t believe I’ve made it to 200 🙏🚗
Please do a part 2!!
I think I’m going to have to now! Thanks for watching.
Pretty sure the R31 GTS had movable front spoiler aero as well....?
Another comment mentioned that to, so it very well might be true! Ill have to look into it. Its amazing how many crazy parts there are on JDMs. Thanks for watching.
I'm on my knees please please please in your next jdm weird extras, 94 integra exclusive headlight liners. Adding color and or shape to the already strange bubble headlights
Didn’t the R31 GTS-R have an active chin spoiler?
A few other people mentioned that to, I had a mention of a specific r32 model as well. Thanks for the comment!
for the chains where mostly sold with GT cars as there market at the time was for uppercases people who like to go skiing. now im not presenting this as fact but from the view point of someone who has studied the options and advertisement side of the JDM world.
hope that clears that up
That’s honestly the best answer I’ve heard for the snow chains. Thanks for sharing!
@@JDMArchives if you want to see what im talking about more take a look at the toyota sera options and the "GT pack"
Thanks Ill have a look!
Wow that is a crazy loop hole! I have no idea what would happen. I wonder if it would become legal!?
And yeh that’s a great idea. Thanks for watching!
this is incredible
Thanks so much! Takes a long time to put the video together.
Never heard of the nismo z tune before this, but the briefcase seems really lame compared to something like the umbrella or active aero imo.
That’s fair enough. You absolutely can have an opinion on it! Totally recommend looking up some details on the Z Tune. It’s a beast.
In places like ohio you need snow tires or chains or you slide all over the place. A couple inces of snow makes the road impassable w/o them
Yeh that makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the comment.
those are not flag poles, are parking pole, they are really common on japan, shows to the driver where is the corner of the bomper. usually is on the oposite corner to the driver
That makes sense, its disrespectful in most countries to incorrectly hoist/hang a flag. Great information.
I love Japanese quirkyness
What site did you use to search for the Century flag poles?
Anyone knows what’s the website to search for the parts?
❤ Toyota GR Corolla ❤️
There would definitely be some GR Corolla parts that could have made it on this list. Great car
Should see the 7th gen celica rare factory TRD see through fuel door lol
No way! That’s amazing, love it
ofc if you get the shoes, you need to dress up all in retro style. That would be something on a JDM meeting.
Can you imagine 🤣
R32 GTSt had optional active front aero.
Thanks! I’ve found a few more cars that have it since this video thanks to the comments 🙏
Hear before you blow up 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks so much. Legend!
R32 GTS T also had active aero front splitter. I always thought it wa cool
Yes! I’ve found it in a few brochures now. Thanks for the info
The R31 GTS-T had front active aero as an option
Thanks for the info! I also found from the comments that the r32, not the GTR, also had a front lip active aero option.
The toyota Soarer had a cigarette box and wall clock.
That’s amazing! I want the wall clock.
Should have used the vr4 for active aero
Those curtains are "Above the Boot" Try living in Hokaido and not having snow chains.
Did I say boot did I 🤣 I try to replace Aussie slang as much as I can. Trunk is what I meant. 🤣
Bro screw Richard Mille we need the Supra watch 💀💀💀💀
🤣 best comment
toyota altezza watch looks much better, more common though
Toyota Altezzas look great!
i tink your yen to usd conversion from 2000 is incorrect for flag poles. shoulda been about $150usd year 2000
Ahh thanks! There’s so much information it’s tough to get it all perfect. Thank you!
When your driving round Japan you could be on a lovely mountain road one minute and gain abit more altitude and it’s covered in snow
Wow! That’s awesome to know. I’ve heard from a few other comments to that changing weather conditions can play a role to.
Where did I put all the paperwork for my Z-Tune... oh yea, the carbon fiber briefcase!
you should have a discord for stuff like this
i have things to share
I’ll try and get other socials together soon. Thanks for the feedback
IS300 watch that looks like the gauge cluster!
When a plastic briefcase is worth as much as your used jdm car...
It’s wild isn’t it! Imagine what the briefcase would sell for now, considering a z tune sold for around the 2 million mark a year or so ago
I'll add that 3 spoke wheel is Also in R34 GTRs (obviously branded with a GTR logo instead of Nissan in that one)
Unfortunately thats not a flagpole. Thats for knowing exactly where your bumper is in tight japanese parking spots.
