In this second lesson, we show you the 5-step method for ECG interpretation made easy, showing you the ECG EKG interpretation basics.
We start off and cover some basic info that you need to know, including what the boxes on the ECG strip paper mean. From there, we walk you through a basic normal sinus rhythm and show you each of the parts of the ECG tracing along with at the same time we show you on the heart what is happening with the conduction system at each point of that tracing.
From there, we break down each of the 5-steps and show you the systematic way in which you can work through gathering the information you need from your patients ECG strip in order to make an interpretation of what rhythm they are actually in.
Hopefully, by the end of this lesson you will feel comfortable going through these 5 steps and that you will be able to properly identify and interpret a basic, normal sinus rhythm.

You have a gift for teaching: explaining it simply, concisely, and speaking clearly at a moderate pace. Your visual aids are also excellent. Thank you for sharing. I'm looking forward to viewing your videos.
My NCLEX exam had a lot of ECG interpretation questions and because of this, I passed at 97 questions, thank you for this
Thank you soooo much! 23 years as an RN...never has this been explained like this.
This is really awesome to hear Melinda! Thank you so much and glad you liked it!
You have the best ECG videos on UA-cam. I passed my ECG test and got a job as an RN in ICU. Thank you for your time and knowledge. You are an outstanding teacher. I will be watching all your ICU videos😁
This is amazing to hear Joelle!!! Congratulations and so happy to have been able to help in some way. I appreciate the kind words and wish you all the best. Lots of videos out there, so I hope you like them!
I am currently studying and preparing for my Phlebotomy & EKG certification exam and this has been by far the best explanation of what happens during an EKG. I have watched other videos, bought text books, and not one of them explained what happens in the heart during each complex on the strip like this video did. I have tried for months to master understanding this and I finally can associate what I know in the heart with what I see on the strip from the patient. Very well done and Thank you so much!!!!!
This is so awesome to hear! I'm so happy that this helped it all click for you. Thats so great. Thank you Holly for taking the time to let me know this! 🙂
Thank you!!! I feel the exact same. This video has helped me to put it all together as I begin my new job as a Monitor tech. Greatly appreciated!
This is so informative
I can’t thank you enough for how much you’ve helped me with my last semester clinical rotation in the ICU, I’ve watched everyone of your lectures and feel so prepared. Your channel is truly a gem. I am so lucky that I found you.
A small correction at 4:05. I think you mean every 3 seconds. Since, every big box is 0.2 s and there are 15 big boxes between each dash, we get 0.2 * 15 = 3 seconds.
But none the less, amazing video. Thanks a bunch. Learned a lot.
Yup! Definately a slip on my part. Glad you enjoyed the video though!
At the hospital were I work, every year we have to take an EKG exam which can be stressful when working with patients that are stable and the only arrhythmia is controlled Afib, PVC's, Sinus Arrhythmia and Sinus Rhythm. So when this exam comes up, its stressful and we all have to brush up. I happened to come across your lessons and I am so GRATEFUL! I can't tell you how incredibly clear and informative, and just so easy you make every video seem! I can't tell you enough how Blessed I feel to have come across your instructional video's, SO BLESSED! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! GOD BLESS YOU!
Such an excellent resource! I’m currently applying/interviewing trying to work my way into the ICU, and these videos have been so valuable in helping me relearn the science and details I’ve forgotten from school that will really help me have a good foundation for understanding more critical care concepts
Thank you Eddie! I've been binge watching your videos, they're all great! It's nice to keep re-learning the things I've learnt so I don't forget them, and you explain better than my profs! Though I found watching your videos at 1.75/2x speed much better for my ridiculously short attention span haha
You are very welcome! You've got a LOT to binge watch these days lol! As for the speed, it's so funny because I hear many people on both sides... either I'm too fast, or I'm too slow. I certainly have heard others mention about speeding it up, which is awesome.
I have learned and understood more from this channel than I did my actual EKG course. Awesome channel! God sent !!
So happy to hear this Charlize! Really glad you found it helpful.
Thank you so very much. I am studying for ACLS, and it's been 6 years since I've been in a position where I needed it. I really appreciate the line upon line, precept upon precept teaching. It's straightforward, understandable, easy to follow, implement and remember.
I'm brushing up for ACLS as well and it's finally starting to click! very concise and easy to grasp as it's been a while as well!
By far the best explanation I have ever encountered in my life. Thank you so much for the very easy understanding lessons for EKG.
Wow, thank you so much!
These videos are so informative and easy to understand. Thank you so much.
So happy to hear this Rebecca! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Thank you so much for your video. You are a good teacher and I appreciate your work.
Thank you so much. This helped me greatly 💕
Excellent explanation, Thank you!
Great Teacher! Thanks.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and time. Very helpful and crystal clear lecture. I don't yet understand how to use the last method, "the sequence method" when counting HR manually, but watching other videos in the playlist, I hopefully will get it as well.
I dig this animation. I really need to learn how to use these tools for presentation. I'm so glad folks are out there trying to add to the educational content of youtube! Good on you! So happy to be part of this educational community.
Thanks man! You've got some great content yourself. It really is amazing the amount of great information out there these days on such a simple platform to use.
As for the animation stuff, its actually quite easy. Feel free to shoot me an email and I'd be glad to talk you through it.
Side note, Army flag, NC hat, souther pines, I've got to ask... Bragg? Former 82nd here if so.
@@ICUAdvantage I did do some time at Bragg. Not with the 82nd, though. Look's like we joined up at about the same time. I was at Bragg in '04, actually. I'll shoot you an email today.
Great lecture.Thanks!
Very good explanation. I have learnt so much! Thank you so much. Tressie Wallace
Thank you so much . I have been away from the bedside 12 years returning to bedside now and your views have help me. Much Appreciation.

GREAT AND SKILLFULL INSTRUCTOR , THANK YOU VERY MUCH ..
Appreciate that! Glad you liked it
Thank you so much!!! God bless you.
Great dear
You're welcome! 😊
15 boxes = 3 seconds, not 1.5 seconds. That was very confusing for me! Otherwise very helpful, thank you!
thank you for this comment! I was so confused as to how it could possibly be 1.5 sec lol
Correct
I was about to have to look at math again which I hate because I'm not good at it. Thank you! 😅
So glad I saw your comment before watching or I would’ve gotten stuck for 30 mins trying to figure it out 😂
great video, but a small clarification. At 4.07 time in the video don't we see one of these marks every 3 seconds ?
every 15 boxes is actually 3 seconds and not 1.5 seconds (0.2 seconds x 5=1 sec. )
Best video.... heartiest thanks
Glad you liked it!
Taking my cardiac exam soon, thank you so much for helping me and many of my classmates!!
You got this Kathy! Truly happy knowing I am able to help in some way and tell all of your classmates hey! 😊

Amazing!
Glad you liked it!
Hey Eddie a emergency med/code lesson would be nice. I feel anxiety about being the RN pulling and mixing meds during a code.
Definitely on the todo list soon!
Great content 👌
Thank you!!
Thanks for this
My pleasure!
Revising for re cert BLS/ACLS awesome teaching
Awesome! Thank you so much
Thank you for the material! Maybe in future videos make the mouse be a different color on the screen that way we can see you hovering and see where you’re going? It helps keep track of what you’re referring to, thanks!
I don't actually use a mouse. Its just an Apple Pencil on an iPad.
You're the best.
Thank you so much!
Awesome video! We have been perusing youtube channels checking out some other videos. It is great how many excellent medical education channels are floating around. We have been working recently on focusing on pathologic diagnoses on real 12 lead EKGs. Would love to hear your thoughts! Cheers
The times are for 25mm/s speed of strip going through the machine, it is standard mostly, but there are places on the globe where they do 50mm/s so it is 0,02s per small box and 0,1s for big box, just for comment-readers to know :)
Love it
Thank you!!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and explaining things soo well.. u really are apt at making things easy... I would like to know that if one big box is 0.2 sec so five big boxes make 1 sec and 15 big boxes make 3 seconds but u said it makes 1.5 sec,,, I just don't get this point ,,please explain 4:04 to 4:11
The introduction music is a bop
I'm assuming you mean not good. If so, I agree and why I didn't keep using it!
@@ICUAdvantage no, I actuality really like it!!
@@saraherget5089 haha oops. Well thanks! I did move away from it but my newest videos have a new intro with a pretty good song. You’ll have to let me know what you think of that one! 😊
Bomb vid.
Ekg certification expired, need to take the test again ❤️❤️❤️. Awesome video, the best#1.
Gracias
Woohoo! Glad to be able to help!
i have a question on the small boxes method. why 1500? thank you so much for your videos
fantastic
Thanks John!
Please fix or pin a clarification statement to the top of your comment thread r/t seconds: 0.2 sec. (per big box) x 15 = 3 seconds; 0.2 sec. (per big box) x 30 (or 2 sets of 15) = 6 seconds. The mistake causes confusion. Otherwise, good video. Thanks!
Can I ask, why lead 2? Is that just for continuity of this video or is that where you would recommend to start your ECG interpretation? Thanks, great video!
Lead II presents in the most commonly referenced polarity and strengths that are taught. When you start looking at other leads, things are flipped and look different. Eventually you learn to read these too, but for consistency Lead II is the most commonly referred.
I’m over here worried I’ll never understand ECG for nursing school and you have been an absolute blessing.
My only confusion Is about ensuring you are looking at lead 2? Do you have any videos explaining that concept?
Great to hear the videos have been helpful.
I actually get to talking about this in depth in the 12-lead EKG series that I'm currently doing. But Lead II is typically going to be a positive waveform and is generally the one that is best for basic rhythm interpretation as the other leads start to look different. Its just the classic view. It certainly can be done from other views, but is easiest and best from II.
where did the 300 come from for the big bix method?
PR interval is it correct? Small doubt
Quite fantastic way of teaching.
What is the best method for rate calculation?
Honestly whatever is the easiest for you and makes the most sense. I like just counting the QRS's in a 6-second strip and then multiplying by 10.
@@ICUAdvantage that method I prefer the most also. As a practicing physician I am well aware with drugs and diagnosis, but my only problem was correct ecg reading! Now I am reading them better than before after seeing the lecture. Really thankful to the channel and the presenter.
@@rudramd89 very cool! Keep up the great work you are doing and happy to have been able to help in some way!
Hiya...I know it's years later but from the first video in this series, what actually triggers the sarcoplasmic reticulum to release its calcium and activate the muscle cells to contract? I was waiting for the answer 😢 anybody???
Great content! I am now a doctor. Haha jk. I learned a lot--thanks, man.
Haha, well glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video👍, learnt a lot, just too many ads😉
Thank you and thanks for the feedback. I try to be fair with ads and actually place less than what UA-cam automatically puts in there by default.
Recommend the part one link
There is a playlist with all the parts of this series. If you go to the main page for the ICU Advantage channel on UA-cam, you can see all the different videos and playlists.
❤
Thank you!
6 sec 4:42 is right but I don’t think 1 and half sec for 15 boxes is wrong.. it’s 3seconds
👏👏
Thank you!
i dont get why its called P-R interval when the measurement ends at the beginning of Q
Q wave isn't always present, and in some leads its pathological to be present
Why was the QT interval not measured?
This was about rhythm identification not fully analysis of the rhythm.
