I thought it was weird at the time that no one thought he had a point. A game line, as it moves based on where people are betting is the closest thing to quantifying who college football fans think is better.
My complaint with the “four best teams” quote is that the next week of games will do NOTHING to change anyone’s opinions on who the best teams are. The only reasonable outcome from a bunch of tightly contested games is ranking teams by who is most deserving.
But based on what? Some kind of algorithm that combines strength of schedule, quality of wins, total point won and lost by? I mean, this could go on and on but I’m glad I’m not on the committee 😂

I'm not going to argue there is a comparison between the two. But at least go with the time frame of when Kirby took over (8) and not 15 years. Kirby was a big part of why Georgia lost the 6 additional years you tacked on. Plus I sincerely doubt Saban hates him. I know plenty of Alabama faithful that like him still. Kirby actually stayed through the national title when he was hired and wasn't relieved of his position like Kiffin was. Why should we even schedule these things? You're so right. Why did FSU schedule LSU just for the game to be remembered as a close loss for LSU when, in reality, LSU got blown out. Go Noles.
College football is the only sport that has a structure that might deny it's "best" team an opportunity to even compete for a National Title... instead, it's historically given a team (or teams) a spot in the CFP because they "deserve" it. This is no different than participation trophies. So, either you put the best 4 teams in no matter what - how that is determined is debatable, not to be solved in this comment, or you expand the playoffs to increase the likelihood the best team(s) at least get a shot at the National Title. Considering the College Football community can't agree on how or who the 4 best teams are, playoff expansion is the most reasonable answer.
Completely agree with you on being able to schedule at least one upper half P5 team in the noncon. If you can’t do that, then you don’t deserve to be in the playoffs. It definitely doesn’t make sense retroactively, but grabs some nads boys for the future.
My problem is that now the big 10 doesn’t have to go out of conference to have a bunch of big wins. And the sec will add Clemson and Florida state at some point. So eventually it will become a 2 conference 40 team super league and the best of the rest will just make up their own chip so they feel good about themselves.
@ryanbirch7860 This assumes that the PAC4 will be quality teams in the future. I think we might find student-athletes rise up and start thinking more about their own well being, and the impacts of multiple cross country flights per season on their own physical and mental health. I think they start choosing schools where they don’t have to travel as much. Maybe the pac4 are significant in the future.
This will be the third year in a row that Michigan gets to tip toe through its bottom feeder schedule, only to take up a playoff spot from a team that could actually give Georgia or Bama a challenge.
Agree 100%. We're more loyal than podcast listeners because it's not as convenient to listen on TV, etc. No Christmas gifts from Academy for your YT fans is not ok Josh. 😒
@Bama00 i think pate said it, thats horeshit, they always went with deserved over best and again mich went 13-0. Im a mizzou fan, but it’s impossible to say an undefeated p5 team isnt making the playoffs
I’m a Georgia fan so really don’t have a Dawg in this fight but the committee ranking Alabama at #8 is a travesty. They deserve better. I’m beginning to believe they did that just to keep them out of the playoffs. If they beat Ga do they jump them up four spots? I look forward to the twelve team playoff just so it takes it out of the hands of the committee.
If Bama beats Georgia yeah, I think they'll be ranked higher than UGA. Now, for them to jump in those top four spots they need either Texas or Florida State to lose.
It's not a very hard concept to grasp, by best they mean record first if you are a power 5. At least that seems like how it's been. What's your definition of best? Some would say the power 5 teams with the best record, are the best, it doesn't mean they are right, but it's what some people would say.
If "Best Teams" was always the criteria, then 2016 and 2017 Penn State both deserved to make the playoff, especially since injuries are now being accounted for. Instead, they finished 5th and 9th in the respective rankings
Josh has me FIRED UP for UGA v Bama!! Gd this game is gonna be awesome.. all I want for christmas is for the Dawgs to get over the Bama hump one more time. I would be lying if it didn’t mean equally as much as a third straight CFB trophy. The perfect szn, undefeated and SEC + CFB champion is possible and this might be the last best chance UGA has before the new schedules. Go dawgs!!!
If the CFP committee is ranking the "best" teams in order, then what's their criteria to justify putting Washington over Oregon in their own rankings when the consensus is Oregon is the "better" team and favorite to win the Pac-12 championship over Washington?
@@AwoL205 Then they're violating their own criteria when they say "most deserving" isn't part of their consideration. They'd be taking prior deserving results into account. Pretty much the whole industry has stated clearly that Oregon is the "better" team of the two and will beat Washington in the championship game. So the CFP committee isn't holding to their own stated standard of ranking best team in order.
Teams like Alabama schedule teams like Texas because back during the BCS era you needed to have those wins in some cases to be one of the two teams. It doesn't really apply to the playoff era due to the extra spots. Will matter less than if not actually hurt you to schedule a tough non conference opponent next year.
So now that players get paid and are no longer amateurs, how much longer till we do away with years of eligibility? Are we gonna see someone just stay in college a be a van wilder QB, WR, or RB?
No the only reason some kids got so long is because of the covid rule. That will all fade out in the next couple years. The covid rule gave kids 2 extra years and the covid season didn't count against them even if they still played. Combine that with a red shirt year and you've got 8 years in college football but none of the kids after the 2020 season get those covid years
Its a word game. The committee is saying the "best" and using the protocols they are given to determine who is the "best." Those protocols even say they arent using rankings that put non-champions over champions or teams over other teams that have a head to head win because they "ignore some teams that 'deserve' to be selected." I dont think they will abandon those protocols because they were agreed upon by the conferences when they were adopted (thats called a contract).
Make the conference championships part of the playoff! Losers of the confrence championships get to play each other later during bowl season. It will allow more teams in the CFP while not having many more games.
If what the committee chairman says is true, then the committee should be making match ups all year long. they meet and come up with next weeks matchups, so that they can see teams against each other. that way they can watch the teams in meaningful competition, and judge accordingly. Then the entire year is playoffs. But the reality is undefeated matters. even with a soft Michigan like schedule, where you only have to really get up and play 2-3 times a year.
There has always been a subjective component to all championship selections. The BCS included voting. The pre-BCS era was voting by the AP. People complained about the computer component in the BCS... there's no perfect solution.
As unlikely as it is, If bama were to beat the #1 team in the country (for a championship)...I just don't see how one can argue they aren't one of the best 4 teams in the country. No one would have a problem admitting that if it was anyone other than bama.
My problem with it is this…Bama beats Georgia but Georgia has been number 1 all year so one game knocks them out? Washington beat Oregon, so if Oregon beats Washington so should they be penalized because they already beat Oregon earlier so they are even now?
First off its rivalry week in one of the top 3, arguably top rivalry, in the country, record and team strength go out the window. Second, every single team in the top 4 has had a one possession game against an unranked opponent. Texas has had 3. Third, its bama.
Literally the first time ever somebody us picking both Bama and Georgia to win the seccg...... seriously we don't really have to say this, you can only pick one
Agree 100% on the expanded playoffs... it's college footballs participation trophy. All they are doing is lowering the bar, and watering it down. Only the G5 had a legit argument with the BCS and the 4 team playoff. But they need their own playoff and this separation has been needed for some time now.
It should be the most DESERVING Teams. Example... 80-1 Odds 2022 Kentucky Derby Winner horse named Rich Strike. Got selected in the last minutes before the race as a alternate and WON the race. He wasn't considered the best horse. 20 other horses were considered better than Rich Strike but he deserved the win.
Why shouldn’t UGA get in over FSU with a loss even using your criteria? UGA had to play a combination of Mizzou, Ole Miss @Tennessee, and Bama in the last 5 weeks of the season.
I would take exception to you regarding bringing Vegas into the equation. Their line probably starts near the point of who they think is going to win, but you would have to argue against history to prove that they are not influenced by public opinion and that is not necessarily the best team. That’s just public perception which can be horribly skewed.
😮😮😮OK this CFP committee has already had 10 damn years to work things out with the 4 team playoffs. Now that we are only months away from the 12 team playoffs those guys need to get their shitte together in order to use more intelligence instead of acting like they just plug and play with different teams instead of coomon sense when picking these playoff teams.😮😮😮 I think maybe the committee should had went from 4 teams to 6 teams a couple years ago in order to help figure out a better format. The going from 6 teams to 12 teams would had been a much easier transition. Everyone is going to be pissed at this committee if they don't figure out a proper format in order to rank these first ever 12 team playoff this time next year. 😮😮😮
There needs to be a clean cut set of criteria based on regular season and conference championship results. Should be as simple as you win your conference championship you are in no matter what going into the 12 team playoff. The rest of the field should be decided by the BCS system which typically got it right in that era

It’s funny how people think Oregon can actually get left out with a win. #5 right now playing undefeated #3 in the CCG to avenge their only loss by 3 on the road. Not to mention blowing every team out the past month and a half.
Does "The Committee" truly make the decision? Maybe it's just an "advisory" committee? MAYbe, Bill Hancock and ESPN Chair James Pitaro have the final say? Disney/ESPN are making TV shows. Agree 100%. We're more loyal than podcast listeners because it's not as convenient to listen on TV, etc. No Christmas gifts from Academy for your YT fans is not ok Josh. 😒
3 hours late kicks would rule
You can't say TCU wasn't 1 of the 4 best teams when they actually won a playoff game. Seems like the team they beat wasn't on of the best 4 last year.
What a really poor argument. Neither was top 4
@Bama00ur gonna tell me 13-0 Michigan didn’t deserve to go?
@Bama00 i think pate said it, thats horeshit, they always went with deserved over best and again mich went 13-0. Im a mizzou fan, but it’s impossible to say an undefeated p5 team isnt making the playoffs
K state beat TCU in conference championship game yet they didn’t move in rank.
Love what Kirby has done at Jawja. Much respect to the Dawgs. Saturday should be a hell of a game. As always.
Georgia fan as well. If Bama beats us - of course they're in. And they should be.
"A travesty" 😂🥱
If Bama beats Georgia then Texas is in.
They learned their lesson last year with TCU!
How’s that? Oregon, Washington, & FSU play high school football 🏈
Are there only 2 lines given? I didn’t see a Friday night lines
Go dawgs!!!
I would rather beat Bama and lose in the playoff than lose to Bama than lose and get in and win without beating them
If the CFP committee is ranking the "best" teams in order, then what's their criteria to justify putting Washington over Oregon in their own rankings when the consensus is Oregon is the "better" team and favorite to win the Pac-12 championship over Washington?
Washington beat Oregon
@@AwoL205 Then they're violating their own criteria when they say "most deserving" isn't part of their consideration. They'd be taking prior deserving results into account. Pretty much the whole industry has stated clearly that Oregon is the "better" team of the two and will beat Washington in the championship game. So the CFP committee isn't holding to their own stated standard of ranking best team in order.
Just friggin make your point. You have the wherewithall
Teams like Alabama schedule teams like Texas because back during the BCS era you needed to have those wins in some cases to be one of the two teams. It doesn't really apply to the playoff era due to the extra spots. Will matter less than if not actually hurt you to schedule a tough non conference opponent next year.
Next year won't matter, you can have 2 losses next year and still make the playoffs
That's awesome! Main stage chance! Well deserved
Roll Tide from Kaiserslautern, Germany by way of Robertsdale, AL!
K-town was the most fun in my life.. well second only to my son. Enjoy that place rocks !
Love the show Josh. Keep it up.
For what it's worth the plural form of apparatus is NOT "apparati".
It's correct to use apparatus or apparatuses.
You speak with such conviction...
Two conference championships, dudes a god.
Would Michigan have been favored over TCU last year?
Michigan closed at a 7.5 point favorite
So explain our ranking some models have us # 8 ahead of FSU and Washington
THINK for a moment just how ludicrous it is to have an effing committee PICK playoff teams?!
The were so lucky to beat Auburn. They should have lost.
Should’ve could’ve would’ve, a win is a win.
My problem with it is this…Bama beats Georgia but Georgia has been number 1 all year so one game knocks them out? Washington beat Oregon, so if Oregon beats Washington so should they be penalized because they already beat Oregon earlier so they are even now?
Oregons the biggest threat to win the Championship!
A week ago, Alabama narrowly escapes a 6-6 team. Now suddenly they’re one of the two best teams in college football. Makes so much sense.
About as much sense as Tcu making it in with a loss in their conference championship to a sub top ten team.
@@shanewilson2270did they win their semifinal game? Was anyone questioning Michigan. No. Play the game.
Game results matter
Best team focuses on putting the best product on the field (for TV). Deserving plays no role.
Go Dawgs! ❤️🖤🐶🏈🏆🏆
I've never been more disappointed to have deleted Spotify for UA-cam.
You’ve never made a good argument against playoff expansion. Bring it on! Can’t wait
I would take exception to you regarding bringing Vegas into the equation. Their line probably starts near the point of who they think is going to win, but you would have to argue against history to prove that they are not influenced by public opinion and that is not necessarily the best team. That’s just public perception which can be horribly skewed.
Josh, would you wear your white T if you get on the CBS broadcast?
"LOL protocol" love it.
😮😮😮OK this CFP committee has already had 10 damn years to work things out with the 4 team playoffs. Now that we are only months away from the 12 team playoffs those guys need to get their shitte together in order to use more intelligence instead of acting like they just plug and play with different teams instead of coomon sense when picking these playoff teams.😮😮😮
I think maybe the committee should had went from 4 teams to 6 teams a couple years ago in order to help figure out a better format.
They pointed out last year that conference championship games don’t matter when K State beat TCU
They have always given lip service to getting the 4 best teams. They just haven’t actually done it
Look at God! Keep grinding Josh! Stay blessed
Sucks to not be able to bet $5 on the money line for Michigan.
JP you been listening to the texas 2 step, 1st cousin to tge DC 2 step. Wait for there lips to stop in 5 days. Safe flight
The Once Upon A Saturday Tour needs to continue with the biggest rivalry in college football…Army vs Navy!!! Go Army! Beat Navy!
Josh!!!!! That was hurtful......we're in a build back year, be kind! GBR
Even with 12 teams , someone will be mad about being left out .
Probably 3-4 teams
Hell i can see pac 12 have two in Washington n Oregon its happen.before big ten
I’ve listened to every show since I found u. Btw. Prior to Klatt promotion of show. Lol. I’ve never loaded Spotify before. Computer illiterate. HOW do I prove my loyalty to show???
12 teams ia srill 4 too many in the CFP
What will you do when FSU gets Michigan in the first round and beats them? Will your head explode? I know Joel Klatt’s will 😂
It’s funny how people think Oregon can actually get left out with a win.
After the year he's been having at the helm of Disney, ask Bob Iger to pick his BEST 4. With The Game capturing 20M viewers, I bet Bill, Jim and Bob think Ohio State and Michigan are 2 of the 4 BEST college football teams. You're closer to it than we are, Josh. Tell us what you know.
