These 3 are the perfect trio for the podcast. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard or had a desire to truly binge watch every episode of something before. Sorry can’t make dinner something came up…me binge watching every episode of teachers off duty.
I had a teacher who would constantly make fun of me for crying or showing any emotion, and if I fell asleep, he would constantly make me feel bad about it and joke about me and would ignore me on purpose and I stopped talking. But I had a ceramics teacher who was the only reason I kept coming to high school . Even when I had horrible days the second I walked into his classroom, I would just feel relieved and would be able to calm down and just enjoy. He gave me a purpose in school.
Awesome job! I am a veteran teacher (going into year 32) but still have consistently solid and positive relationships with my students. I am the one they come to when they’re upset. But I also make it a point to adapt with them each year, learning from them. I do think teachers can get stuck in their ways but have seen it happen with newer teachers as well as more veteran teachers. Thanks for always making me laugh!
Hi, can you plz elaborate or give suggestions to avoid teacher burnout ? This is my 5th year teaching, going into my 6th. I was like this in the beginning. I was their go to person when they're upset. I teach middle school, urban. However, realized I would give advice and listen to them, but then they start making up lies about other teachers, or try to see me when they want to skip, just take advantage of my kindness. Most of the time I advice them to behave, listen, do their work etc.. but they continue to get in trouble, their behavior worsens and I'm tired. So now I have closed my doors for all of them (the kids who were troubled) and just focus on teaching. I would love to be their go to person but if their behavior doesn't change, they continue to join gangs, get into fights, bring in weapons, etc.. at what moment do you stop letting these things affect you ? Can you plz advise what to do in this situation. It would be appreciated. Thank you.

First year teachers get the worst duties! Winter on the playground, dealing with parents, etc. Also I work at a place that everyone gets a TA- first year teachers get always get the TA that sleeps during class, or goes out to smoke every 45 minutes.
They always get the position that nobody else wants for seniority reasons. Honestly, it doesn’t get much better. The teachers who are labeled as “good and experienced” always get the worse kids b/c they’re the only ones who can “handle” them.

My junior yr English teacher, Ms. Edward's literally saved me and my GPA. That year, my grandma died suddenly. My mom had to travel to get affairs in order and help her dad clear out the house. I lived with my best friends family for a month, and my grades tanked... she took notice and tutored me everyday and was like a 3rd mom in my life that year. I'm 17 and applying to Uni this year for a combined Maths and Education degree and well as tutoring secondary school students and these podcasts are invaluable. Ive had some incredible teachers who inspired me to go into education and it is those teachers who give you the time and space to get to know you and work with your strengths rather than criticising your weaknesses. But I have to give almost as much credit to those who failed me in the system (as a severely anxious and autistic girl, but who was quiet and didnt attract attention) because i dont want other kids to have that same experience.
I worked at a school in a clerical position. There r bosses who r mentors who will help u figure it out and others who won't help u figure it out. Glad i moved on to other jobs...
to answer the question at 42:15 , I think a lot of "veteran" teachers do have trouble with it, but that's only because they choose to and they don't take the time out of their day to sit and realize like- hey this isn't the same as it was when I started or when i was their age, I need to change with them so that it's easier on both me and my students. (im 17 and about to be a senior so I have no view on teaching just what I've noticed through highschool) I had a teacher my freshman year for physical science who was my #1 favorite teacher, and she had been teaching for 14 years at that point. Instead of just having the mindset of "okay let's just get through the curriculum fir the day/week" we always had little sidebars and moments in class that gave us a connection, therefore making us want to learn more. She was so good because of that that our test averages were always A-B and when she switched to Chem I knew I had to take her class. and I will never regret it. but I also had a 2nd year teacher for my Sophomore English who was so honest and down to earth with every one of us that she was also my favorite. Like Mr. J's favorite teacher did, my teacher always gave me an outlet for my feelings, whether it was home stuff, teacher stuff, or just random drama. she listened and sometimes even just liked to sit and gossip. That was rhe first year I ever did good in English because every year before that I didnt have the drive to learn due to my teachers being a-holes or just not wanting to connect. constantly throughout my Junior year I would go see her or email her and just catch up. She's now changed schools and we follow each other on insta and I will forever wish her the best in life. for the bad teachers, I've had multiple "veteran" teachers who just did not care about us as people. they always saw things as our fault and half of the time refused help when we didn't understand things. I've also had friends tell me about a first year teacher who did the same thing. he was old school, never tried to have fun with students or bond with them in any way. with every single one of those teachers, the grade averages were B-C (mostly C) with only the kids who are already really smart and (what they saw as) "well-behaved" doing good and liking their class. Moral of the story, it honestly depends on the teacher. A lot of them go into the job expecting it to be just that, a job. not a bonding, connecting experience with the future leading generation(s). It also somewhat proves that the more you care about your students as people, the more they will (mostly) respect you as their teacher and therefore do better because they want to listen to you and because they actually look forward to your class during the day. The way you teach is a choice, the way you treat your students js a choice, but before teachers make that choice, they need to think about how it will affect their students and inevitably, themselves as a teacher.
