Thanks for this. I've been considering a running aframe. My boy already has a really good stopped contact but he tends to do the decent on the aframe slowly. I'm guessing he is anticipating the stop. I also am not a fan of the impact on his joints from the stop on the aframe. It was great to hear your thoughts on the topic.

I taught stopped contacts to my Pyr Shep, but he was very demotivated by stopping. I worked on running contacts for 2 years, but I could never get reliability.i went back to stopped with a lot of early releases. I love Jennifer's perspective.

What about the physical stress on the dog's body in stopping on the A frame particularly?

My 18 m o lab/golden boy is started crawling down the A frame to get to a 2on/2off stop and Im worried about impact trauma to his shoulders ( he's 62 lbs) Im considering running vs floating stop just off the frame into a down, to keep his head down and weight back. Im a total novice, has only earned a an ACT 1 and am working with a trainer at local club. Thoughts??, especially on the trauma to shoulders and best way to manage contacts

The problem is that there are no studies that support that one method is better than another. While there is definite impact to 2o2o, it typically requires fewer repetitions to teach and maintain the behavior. Running may be easier on the dog over one rep, but may take many more repetitions over the dog's lifetime to train and maintain. When the question is health, each handler has to make the best decision that they can, but do understand that it is unstudied and that different people will choose different methods, even though they are both citing health as the reason for their choice.
