nice one jack great video . just bought an oasys 76 on ebay just two minutes ago . been a kronos owner since 2012. can't see the screen that well anymore. the oasys screen is massive. and sounds fabulous. all credit to korg.
The Korg Oasys system began to be developed in the 90s, as early as 1994 a prototype was ready, similar to the functional Trinity, but Korg gave up on launching it in 1995 because its cost exceeded 20 thousand dollars. So the system was broken down into several other cheaper equipment such as Trinity, the Z1 and Korg Prophecy. It also had a powerful 8-channel audio recording card for PC computers, but it was expensive and sold few units. Soon it was discontinued. Korg only resumed the project years later in PC architecture at a much lower cost. Thus came the Oasys, which even so was one of the most expensive synthesizers and sales were few and far between. Today it is a collector's model. Nobody knows what happened to the 1994 prototype.
I think a couple of the dates are off a bit, but the story's pretty accurate. I begun selling keys, synths, and all things MIDI-related a bit before the M1, but after the Roland D-50 was released. I first got an awesome demo of the OASYS prototype presented by John Bowen @ NAMM (Anaheim) Jan '96. Having been an M1 owner, and a heavy user of the O1W series, I too later bought an OASYS PCI card to run in my Mac after the product bombed horribly and Guitar Center was blowing them out @ $399. In Dec 2010 I bought a beautiful mint (used) OASYS 76 with a hardcase… just a month later they announced the Kronos @ NAMM 2011. I've had a Kronos 73 since late 2012 and should be looking to find a new owner for the OASYS 76 since it's been in its case for a while now.
That metal block between the Oasys label and the Korg logo hid a VGA and an Ethernet port. Inside the block was a port that had a cable that plugged into the VGA out, and then back inside the machine to the touch screen. The Kronos incorporated a regular PC motherboard running a custom version on Linux to operate the Oasys. The block was there because they wanted to use the motherboard USB ports, but the VGA port stuck out a bit, and with the jumper cable going back into the chassis, there was that hump.
Yes, because looking at the usb ports etc, it's obvious the rear of a mainboard. Have you any knowledge of what happens when the VGA is connected to a monitor?
Back then, people thought that every keyboard would have at least as large a screen in 5 years' time. 20 years later, 95% of all keyboards still have a 2x3 inch mini display without touch function. I can't understand that. 😁🙈
Simple, because there are few very very deep complex synths about. People don't like them, they want analogs with as close to one knob per function as possible. Waldorf Quantum etc has the big touch screen because it needs it due to the complexity.
Korg need to bring a 76 key Synth action with at least standard Aftertouch in the mix. I prefer the standard Aftertouch generally, as Poly aftertouch seem to have a "mushi" feel to it imo. The NI S61MKIII is great at home but I still prefer a normal 76 key keybed with standard Aftertouch. and even the 73 key K2 is kinda heavy to carry around.
I've had my Oasys 76 for 19 years now and am still in awe as to the depth and complexity of patterns and rhythms it can generate. The Karma section within the Oasys is the brainchild of Stephen Kay and the external Karma software he still sells is an astonishing accessory for it. These guys showed absolutely nothing of what its strengths and purpose are. They just played strings and then at the end concluded the piano sound was a bit dated - WTF? It's like having a Ferrari for the day and sitting there just playing with the radio controls, but not actually driving it..

Love it. I would definitely watch a whole video on the Oasys. Still have and use my kronos 61 ...i still love it even after 14 yrs
Jack - you should totally check out some of Stephen Kay's demos of the Oasys from back in the day. These machines were absolute monsters and still sound really good now. I think that flat piano can be tweaked to be a bit more usable today.
"In Triplicate" is one of the Combis on the Oasys (Kronos as well).

Love it. I would definitely watch a whole video on the Oasys.
I had, a still do, a 76 M3 which obviously shared a lot of this one’s architecture, included the pads and chords etc.
The touchscreen no longer works (common issue on those unfortunately) but all the stock sounds are still playable.
I still use it as my master keyboard with my DAW today and really like the depth of many of the string and pad patches.
How did they ship it to there? Costs?
In the back of jacks car!
The oz reveal felt like a heavy Dave Stewart tribute!😂
What a great combo with the oasys and wave drum, amazing!
6:30 amazing sound! Im wondering what is it called?
💫✨I was never going to be able to afford the Oasys but then the baby brother m3 came out and I could justify the purchase, years later I held out for Kronos 2, I have a Juno X and Moroder Nova but they’re collecting dust…
The Kronos continues to inspire but all thanks to the Oasys … 🙏🏻💫✨Thank you Korg
So cool!
dreamed of getting one. Ended with a M3 & Kronos 2.
And they are both Oasys DNA, hands down.
The Piano on thei Kronos like Luke mentioned put it on the map for a all rounder.
Still got a Wavedrum on the attic
when kronos 3?
The Indy jam was so freaking dope
WE NEED THE DEEPDIVE! There are no videos like that, because it was so out of reach. Hopefully one day you guys will do it!
I wanted this keyboard so bad back in the day, but could only afford the Triton Extreme. I still wish I never sold that keyboard
Much more playing of string and synth patches would have rocked this sweet video, with the drummer jamming along.
Korg has put out a lot of great keyboards, but I've never heard of this one. It is fantastic!
I remember Oasys introduction and Stephen Kay’s demos. It was a spaceship back then (in terms of technology AND the cost).
THEY NEED TO BRING BACK THE KRONOS 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 but the oasis is lovely
Agreed -- we need a new Kronos. The Nautilus is NOT the successor to the Kronos, as implied at the start of this video.
@@runestone1337 well. Looks like Kronos 3 is on it’s way 😂😂😂
Just watched Zeppelin's live 07' Kashmir. Guess what John Paul Jones was playing? Yep, an Oasys and surprisingly an X5D. Brilliant!
Hmmm a new Korg Oasys Mulitpoly style synth coming next week??
been years since i played but Korg was always my favorite keyboard
A fantastic piece of musical technology for it's time!! 👋
So which synth to buy now?
that video idea about how far things have come, and what hasn’t, would be fascinating!
So much pleasure hearing this piece of engineering art.
korg oasys is so ahead of its time
Please do a deep dive into the Oasys - this has always been a legendary, mythical keyboard to me. A 1-hour video would be perfect!
I think if I'm not mistaken the keybed is Yamaha GHS ❣
I got one for sale on Ebay right now. Fully Loaded. In Yorkshire UK. Every slider and knob is working! I do feel i might regret selling it though later.
Price ?

One of the truly great synths of all time
