Following Britain’s announcement of a new visa scheme for Hong Kong British National (Overseas) passport holders and their dependents, the number of BN(O) passport holders shot up 300 per cent in six months, from 167,000 in July to 733,000 by the end of 2020. London introduced the new scheme in July 2020, calling it a pathway to citizenship in the UK, with applications set to open on January 31, 2021.
An estimated 5.4 million people in Hong Kong will be eligible to apply for the BN(O) visas that allow them to live and work in Britain and eventually become a citizen in six years.
The South China Morning Post spoke with Hongkonger Aby Wong, who recently moved to the UK on “Leave Outside the Rules” status. She made the move after months of citywide anti-government protests in 2019 and Beijing's subsequent imposition of a national security law on the city.

SCMP, please follow some of the BN(O) passport holder's life in UK and do a report after 2, 5, 10 years. Thanks!
Wouldn’t it be easier to ask British born Chinese’s in the UK and ask them? Wouldn’t that be faster?
Wait if the British born Chinese supports China that means we are not suited to be interviewed ?
Most of them will just return back to HK
@@marylee4510 That'll be interesting to follow up.
There is no special treatment here for BN(O) passport holders. In fact here in the UK, most are very ignorant of Asian ethnicity. Every east Asian here is regarded as a Chinese. The Asian community here are not political incline nor integrated, this is due to their choice and lot of social exclusions.
The problem is even more apparent in the job market. No matter how qualified you are, the natives are always the first choice. (This is not a complaint, most country does this and they have the right to do so).
My family once had a Chinese maid/ babysitter who was a medical doctor in her country (China). You may think it is because her qualification are foreign, but the same stigma is true also for international student studying in a UK based University.
The truth is job availability nowadays is scarce even for the native graduates, let alone foreigners.
If you are coming here, my best advice is to mentally prepare to set for a life of hard working low level jobs (I meant no offense, this does not reflect on your intellects but the social mobility here for east Asian.)
PS how well or bad China is perceive here also reflects on east Asian here too, even if you say you are not Chinese.(The concept of "I am Hongkonger, I am not Chinese. Hongkonger are superior than chinese people" are not fully understood in western society, simply because, they dont care and tbh they dont agree either.)
To add to this, an example of a mass legal migration like this happened before, it is called the Windrush Generation. Post WW2 thousands of Jamaican migrated to the UK believing that it was their "motherland" and they were here to rebuild it. In return they were given empty promise of a better life.
Their experience were horrendous (black history) and even to this day, the Jamaican is one of the most unemployed ethnic group in the UK. Most live in slums. This is not because they are uneducated or unqualified. 60 years has passed since they came and rebuild the UK. Now the government is sending them and their descendants home in masses (without their consent).
In term of freedom of speech, a lot of Brits will tell you that the UK does have it limits, it is a common knowledge here (UK) that you can get arrested for having an opinion online. (Look it up)
I hope the best for the Hongkong newcomers and I believe that in a soon future, migration for jobs/ opportunities will gear toward the east and will be right on their door step. When that time comes, it maybe too late. If anything, it has already started.

Now that they have moved away to England, they can't say they regret moving here. That would be embarrassing so they just have to keep up with the appearance.
