      Be careful when you cross over the antimeridian where it switches from W to E at 180°. If not you will end up with wrong #'s such as 185°10'25" LOL

    Thanks! I recently was given a bunch of "fishing numbers" to put into the GPS unit on my boat. Being a noobie, I wasn't clear on how decimal translated to lattitude and longitude. This video cleared it up!

    About 34 years ago I wrote routines to convert DMS angles in HP-48 format (DD.MMSSssss) to decimal degrees.

    If you wanted to disassemble the decimal degrees with the same factors that created it. You can also use the same decimal portion for both M and S. Assuming the example 38.4256
    D = 38
    M = int(0.4256 x 60)
    S = 0.4256 x 3600 mod 60
    The answer is the same, just expressed differently, showing the same factor constructors of 60 & 3600.

    I remember when the ANSI drafting standard changed from DMS to decimal degrees. I was a machinist. None of the machine tools, none of our measuring tools had decimal deg and no one had experience with it. Just another chance for mistakes in making the conversion.
