In Depth Review: Ozark Trail 12 Piece Camping Tool Set & Folding Saw

- Adam and John review the contents of Ozark Trail's 12 piece camping tool set and Ozark Trail's folding saw. By the next morning, the machete was bent from splitting wood like a wedge and was rather dull. The magnesium/ferro rod had gone missing as it fell out of one of the sheaths. The hand axe was rather dull to begin with overall and did not have enough weight behind it to be effective. The knife was shaped odd and parts of the handle were painful. The rope served its purpose and was used to make a tripod and tripod chair that supported ~285 lbs. The flashlight in the kit worked well and had many cool features, including one unexpected feature! The lens was removable and could be used as a firestarter! The folding saw worked well and was the choice tool to cut wood for the night. Overall, the Kit itself was mostly only usable for one day and you are probably better off buying the separate parts that worked well and finding replacements for those that were inefficient. The folding saw was excellent and worth the price tag.

Ozark Trail is what I started bushcrafting with as a kid years ago, it's excellent starting material..
Nice video, I just picked one up for my wife’s emergency kit.
In the military the red filter is used to read maps at night it allows you to see but stops the enemy from seeing you and your equipment. Blue and green are also used because the different features on a map are blue red an green and each filter hides its respective features do to the color similarites. In this kit im sure it was kind of meant for that purpose but also as a battery block.
I have this kit and the saw, and they work very well, I bought them at the same time and have used them for 100+ days total. The hatchet is a little light, but will process wood.
I just got this kit from a friend as a gift and I love it, everything works great and they came relatively sharp, with a little extra sharpening the knife and machete were even better. I did notice the handle on the knife felt just a bit small and I don't like knives with the serrated part but I have my own knife and everything else was great.
I reached an age where my knees and other joints didn't like to process my firewood by jumping and stomping anymore. A lightweight folding saw like this one made camp life a lot more enjoyable.
Makes sense! I honestly really like it -Adam
Wouldn't a hatchet be easier/faster? Can someone tell me when a saw would serve better than an axe? Honestly curious have a great day.
"the machete was bent from splitting wood" machetes aren't for splitting wood, they are for underbrush. If you need a leg strap, use the paracord. Clip the axe to a bag and you're fine, you don't need to carry it. The sheath isn't great for it but if you make sure it's closed tight there is little wiggle room. All in all it's a 30 dollar kit, you get what you pay for. In a pinch it will do fiine.
Your spoken advice betray's your moniker. *:-)*
God bless
The hatchet case is ambidextrous. It goes in with the handle pointing out of either side.
I have 3 sets and the hatchet sheathe fits well on my plate carrier I just weave it on with my pouch on molle attachment, just in case anyone else needed somewhere to make it work. Good video!
That’s the same thing I did after I started carrying more on my carrier vs belt. It fits extremely well for me too and doesn’t get in the way of much as long as I’m not trying to do gymnastics through the woods.
The red plastic fits nicely inside under the lens and doesn’t seem to disturb wildlife as much🤔
The knive back ridges you use to strike the fire starter
The machete is actually full tang
I threw mine at a tree and hit handle first and it busted the bottom of the handle and the metal handle stuck out of the plastic
It was an easy fix just duck taped the handle and it was fine
I just picked this up the other day. I love the machete, knife and hatchet. Have no idea how to use the fire starter lol
You use the spine of the blade to scrape off the metal bar and collect about a quarter sized pile and you use the faro rod with the knife and strike the sparks onto the pile and having tender/kindling aside to catch the fire
same, i wanna make some flames
lol
It's easier than you might think it's all about practice
That fire starter has two parts. One part is the ferro rod and the rest is magnesium. You have to look closely at the rod to see it. Scrape the bigger part of the rod (the magnesium) and make a small pile. Then use the blade of the knife, hatchet or machete and scrap the small rod towards the shavings. That throws a spark at the mgnesium which should burst into flame for a few seconds. Make sure you have easily ignitable materials to add on and make it bigger.
No choclate no marshmallows so until you get those for stores you do not need fire
The red tab is used similarly to how an old battery operated toy would make you pull the tab to start using.
It fell out when you unscrewed the flashlight 🔦
Real 550 cord doesnt always have th fishing line. Actually most true 550 paracord doesn't. It's just a extra feature added by some companies.
Good to know!
Military issued 550 doesn't have it. It's only some civilian versions with it for these survival packs etc
@@briangilbert9077 I am aware. Most people see that it looks like 550 cord and assume. I figured I didn't need to go in depth
real cord has a red line for fire
I actually bout this for a second time and still didn't video and now I remember why because you did it lol 😂 😅
Great job, Guys.
Why would you strike the rod with the blade edge?good way to dull the blade
I think the belt loop strap on the axe is designed that way to put on the backpack straps. It would be setting straight then 🤷🏼♂️ just my opinion
I got one of them for a gift and .I love it.so I hunt deer so I think it will be able to help me out there in the woods
I got this set as a gift. I cannot for the life of me get the knife blade sharp. I don't know what steel they used but it is super hard.
That particular fire starter is not for scraping the magnesium, that’s for spark lightning fires with dry leaves or birch bark, or a Trangia. 😉. Sure you can do it but is not going to be effective, the ones to scrape are different, this is a ferro rod.
This fire starter has a small stick of magnesium partially attached to the Ferro rod :)
Oops, I have it backwards. It was a small Ferro rod inside of the magnesium
Walmart just calls it a Magnesium alloy rod www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trail-Paracord-Axe-Hatchet-with-Fire-Starter/506659568
Going to get me one tomorrow
Are the sheaths safe and sturdy enough?
Nice review hi from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
I just got this kit call me corny but I like it
You do you! If you like it, you like it!
I just got this myself. I bet we can use it better then these guys
perfect gift for the mall ninja in your life
Thanks for the video. *:-)*
God bless
I wish you would have chopped some wood with the hatchet so we could see if it was actually useful. Other wise a good review thanks.
Great point, I guess we tested it off camera and were highly disappointed so we didn't even film it. But looking back, that would have been the most important reason TO film it. Thanks for the feedback! -Adam
They aren't heavy enough to be effective ...useless pretty much
John Savage it works. But it doesnt work extremely well or anything. Better swing like a man if you wanna cut anything thick lol. Might be a better throwing axe
@@swappedoutZ71 thanx bit O jusy bought higher quality hatchet at Walmart for $26. Full tang with rubber handle. It was in the tool section. Most of the stuff in that kit is crap. Bought similar machete and rewrapped the handle double with 550.
John Savage the flashlight is good for the money spent. I have 2 ozark trail flashlights and i am very pleased with both of them along with a headlamp. Cost like 7 bucks for both and its pretty good for the money spent. Very bright with fresh batteries i use them for walking/hunting my dog at night. I have a tent i have not tested yet and a buddy of mine uses a cast iron skillet he is pleased with. I would say the knives in the kit arw decent for the money. Not professional grade or anything but theyre good for basic outdoor activity, wouldnt depend my life on them though lol. But you get what you pay for
Cool review. Subscribed.
I dont mind paracord handles but after a long time of light carving it starts hot spots on your hands
If you really wanted to you could remove the paracord and make your own one from wood
Is it good for starters
For starting I would say yes. I still occasionally use the knife and machete. They are just not heavy duty by any means. I would definitely recommend the folding saw as a first time folding saw. -Adam
The Wilderness Perspective thank you
Anytime!
The Wilderness Perspective you should sub to my channel
No the axe sucks my bro hit a tree and he broke it not even a tree
Good set of get it done gear
nice job
I just bought the set and wondered if I should keep it. This review gave me confirmation I need to take it back immediately 😂 that machete cutting wood was sad. Thank you for this. Never buying kits again.
the machete does have a full tang used a magnet
What did you open it with?
This camping set is such a steal because all of the things sold separately are like 15$ so it should actually be 40 to 60 dollars but it's super cheap
Absolutely. I don't think we discussed that in the video, but I remember comparing at Walmart before I bought it.
The knife in mine was a lot sharper than the one yall got
Same g
Yup Open It Safely...And Then Pull It Out Of Package By The Tip...Not The Handel...lol...
How long was the machete (bottom of handle to top blade)?
With case 16.5 inches, without 16 inches
You have a $130.00 Mini trapper knife and you are wondering about the value in this department store survival kit?
A machete needs to be a bit top heavy because IT IS A CHOPPER! The axe is a complete bust! I would strip the paracord off the knife and axe and sell them for scrap. Maybe keep the knife sheath and stone. If you catch this during a Christmas sale, then it is worth it, but otherwise not!
I want one for my b day
Hey that would be a nice gift! Maybe something you can add to your EDC stuff! I liked your EDC video! Keep it up, you're smart and seem responsible with your little brother with a BB gun and your knife in your EDC.
@@TheWildernessPerspective thanks your a bery nice person and my parents said yes and im making acamping vidio
Infact ill tell my subscribers to sub to your channel
When i bought mine my machet was shap at hell with out shapping it
Right? The hatchet was sharper than any knife I've ever bought factory,.
U guys really don't give Ozark trails a chance , remember you only paid what?!!!! Yea ur other more expensive knives are great but if you paid alot you have to expect alot duhhh, these damn people always ragging low cost stuff, duh it's not an gold made knife so for the price you paid those knives are great, it's not the gear it's the hunter!!! Respect the ozark.
Lol, funny enough I like Ozark Trail's stuff. It may not be the best quality but it's what I usually end up getting. I was carrying the knife with me today and keep the machete and folding saw in my backpack at all times. More expensive gear would be great but finances just aren't where they need to be to afford it! -Adam
The hatchet is seriously trash though. 😂
Why don't you use the saw in the back of the machete that's what it's for lol
The sawing challenge. At 30:17. ... in SpongeBobs voice “10 hours later “ 🤪
Was actually looking to get this but glad I found this video will probably make my own kit lol thanks 🤙🏾
A few parts of the kit were decent but you could probably definitely make something more dependable for a little more money. The axe in this kit was SO disappointing. -Adam
Not an axe it's a hatchet
You are absolutely correct
Thats why I bought this exact set today bc of the hatchet. I was searching for hatchets and this Ozark one popped up and I thought It look pretty good. Anyway I tested it on a tree hacking extra branches off and it worked well for me and I'm a woman. I loved the machete too chopped those branches right off.
Hey Jethro get a dry leaf it ain't a nuclear weapons
Bro that’s a seven piece
That's fake 550 paracord
I wholeheartedly agree. It has its uses, but I wouldn't depend on it personally. -Adam
Save the $ and put it towards a quality item.
King liar
Thanks for showing me absolutely nothing. Ozark trail equipment sucks. Cheap, made in china crap
HAMMER - their flashlights are very good for the price point. I was 100% satisfied with both of the flashlights i have the one from this kit and a 200L from another kit with a nice headlamp
Ozark trail is actually a sub brand of walmart, so keep that in mind
