- Academy Award winner Colin Firth as King George VI in The King's Speech [2010], delivering His speech to the British Empire upon the World War II.
Music composed by Terry Davis in "The King's Speech: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" album.
Published by Decca (a division of Universal Music Operations Limited) in 2010.
I've always felt this movement of Beethoven's 7th felt like the final stand of mankind on Earth. very fitting.
Well said
Beethoven 7th Symphony 2nd movement brought me here :)
haha me too
same😁
same
ich auch!
Good taste what about the Fifth.
This composer's going places.
What, beethoven? I don't think he can when he's dead
@@waltuh2.3bviews3secondsago3 get it?
😂❤
When Herr Ludwig wrote this -about 1812?-he had well and truly arrived in Vienna ànd history. ❤
My favorite part of the movie......brought me to tears I am so glad Colin firth won a Oscar for this
This was my favorite part in the movie too. So moving and touching....
One of the greatest scenes you can actually feel. Beautifully filmed.
Not gonna lie I was upset at the Academy until I saw this movie
Declaring war on Germany while playing music of a German. Total alpha move
This gernan is Beethoven, the titan born in Bonn. A little respect.
Beethoven would have been against the war two.
@@anenglishmanplusamerican7107 And he (Beethoven) definitely wouldn't have supported Hitler!
@@user-gi8pk9uc7q agreed. Beethoven was pre-Hitler and he had his own views.
@@anenglishmanplusamerican7107 Yeah, when Napoleon decided to declare himself Emperor, Beethoven renamed his 3rd symphony to Eroica, whereas before it had been dedicated to Bonaparte!
Colin Firth earned and deserved his Best Actor Academy Award for his role as His Majesty King George VI. A man who never wanted to be King nor was supposed to be King, but lived through his stuttering problem and served the Empire and Commonwealth with distinction!
One thing I love about this clip: Everyone listening is looking worried or nervous until he is finished, EXCEPT his wife, his mother, and Myrtle Logue, all of whom are smiling and looking incredibly proud throughout his speech. It says a lot.
Everyone else is hearing their King explain they are at war again; they are the only ones listening to a worried man pushing through an almost life-long speech impediment.
*I disclude Lionel from this because he just told Bertie to "say it [the speech] to me as a friend."
If you think this scene is powerful, thank Beethoven. I felt the power of that music before I saw this scene. This music attached to a lot of scenes would cause for a powerful reaction. Very well chosen music, #TheKingsSpeech ..*bravo*
Beethoven would have HATED the Nazis!
@@Elizabeththegreatest Beethoven was a musical genious and highly artistic. The exact type of person that is most interested in strong leaders that give passionate colorful speeches full of emotions.
@@rovhalt6650 No, artists were disproportionally opposed to the fascist dictatorship.
I saw this played over a Nazi concentration camp documentary from the 40s powerful stuff
I love the analogy drawn between the cadence of a good speaker/speech and the assured poise of a conductor keeping an entire orchestra in pace.
Exactly and contrasting that, the images (in the viewers mind) of his dad railing him while trying to make a speech in prior years when he was young.
@@alexpearson8481 Yelling at someone is no way to cure a speech impediment!
@@Elizabeththegreatest yeah…. That’s what I said.
I cannot say what is the most outstanding moment : the 7th Symphony of Beethven or the speech of the King ....
Both, I would think. Geroge VI became a poster child of resistance to the f**ing Nazis, even when England was all alone.
Definitely Beethoven. He was a genius above all others.
Goosebumps and tears every single time! One of the best movie scenes ever done!
One of the best movie scenes ever.
You really feel part of history when you realise the little girl surrounded by stuffy Edwardians is still living in that big house near Green Park
This movie is absolutely fantastic. From the first scene at the start it has you on edge of your seat and hooks you in, to the last scene it is spellbinding watching Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush together in that little room. The music perfect. Credit has to go to Helena Bonham Carter who portays Queen Mum to perfection
In this grave hour, perhaps the
most fateful in our history,
I send to every household of my peoples,
both at home and overseas this
message
spoken with the same depth of feeling for each one of you as
if I were able to cross your threshold and speak to you myself.
For the second time in the lives of
most of us we are at the war.
Over and over again we have tried to find a peaceful way out of the differences between ourselves and those who are now our enemies.
But it has been in vain. We have been
forced into a conflict.
For we are
called,
with our allies,
to meet the challenge of a principle which,
if it were to prevail, would be fatal to any civilized order in the
world.
Such a principle, stripped of all disguise, is surely the mere primitive doctrine that might is
right.
For the sake of all that we ourselves hold dear, and of the
world’s order and peace, it is
unthinkable that we should refuse
to meet the challenge.
It is to this high purpose that I now call my people at home and my peoples across the seas, who will make our
cause their own.
I ask them to
stand calm and firm, and united in
this time of trial.
The task will be hard. There may be dark days ahead, and war can no longer be
confined to the battlefield.
But we can only do the right as we see the right and reverently commit our cause to God.
If one and all we keep resolutely
faithful to it, then, with God’s
help, we shall prevail.
Seriously such a wonderful movie. They couldn't have picked a better song for this scene in the movie.
Although I am only 12 years, I enjoy classical music sooo much. I have re listened to this song for almost three days in a row now. This movie had some of the greatest actors. They really captured the emotion that these real people had.
NO ONE COULD HAVE MADE IT BETTER.
Powerful! Colin Firth is just brilliant.
As was Geoffrey Rush
As was Geoffrey Rush
Epic scene. Epic event. Epic music. This moves me immensely
Love that look at 3:32. "You found the sweet spot. Keep going." Like the afterburners kick in.
reminds me of a certain ending scene in Whiplash, almost same look
Never realized it till now. Great observation!
What a wonderful movie-- this last part reduced me to tears, as well. So powerful!!
I really love that scene, I always cry during that part of the movie, it's so powerfull.
As somebody who championed freedom and liberty, Beethoven would have been proud for his music to accompany this scene.
Thank you for posting. Truly great film-as an American who was dating a British woman at the time, it was indeed a pleasure seeing it with her.
I fell in love with Beethoven for this scene!
Speech for Humanity and Freedom. Thank you for the King and Beethoven 🌿🌿🌿
When I see or hear something great, something amazing, i get shivers going down my back. I had these all through this...
This is probably the most magnificent sequence I've ever seen put to film....
If you take the music out of this scene, it's not as good, beethoven's 7th makes the scene what it is. If you put in another piece like Beethoven 9, it doesn't work as well, the allegretto is the perfect choice.
so many times this song is used for sinister monologues, nice to see it in a more hopeful moment
OMG what just happened?!?! I was in tears, face in my hands...not only goosebumps but tingling with pins & needles.....absolutely flooded with emotion! It shows scenes representing/encompassing everyone in the UK: young, old, rich, poor....to profoundly illustrate that everyone -- no exceptions -- is affected by the war. Love how every single citizen's look on his or her face is completely reverent. It's so hard for me to pick a favorite frame within the scene, but if I must choose it would be 4:10 - 4:17..the music in crescendo, the King's heartfelt words about tribulation and courage as they show the troops - young and unknowing of their fate - one soldier simply holding a cigarette and the brilliant editing of the face of the soldier next to him coming into focus. And Beethoven's Symphony 7 Movement 2.......be still my heart!! I adore that piece to begin with, and to say it is a supremely perfect fit for this scene is an understatement! Colin Firth is unequivocally magnificent in this scene (haven't yet seen the entire film)...but from this segment alone I could determine that his Academy Award was 150% well-deserved!!!!
That was beautiful, both the speech and the music, because the music helped convey the hard things that were said in the speech!
I can totally relate to the King, I used to have a speech impediment!
I still do.
This scene is INCREDIBLE! I'm also so moved and get goosebumps!
I just heard this in Umbrella Academy and was scratching my head about which movie it had played in before. I'm so glad I finally remembered this incredible scene and the power of Beethoven 7th
Curious, when does it play in Umbrella Academy?
@@kimConrad4643 Pretty sure it's first season maybe like 5th epsiode (don't take my word on that though.) Klaus is having PTSD-esque flashbacks in the bath, and you can faintly hear helicopter noises. And then this music....
The greatest composer ever, helps the best king of england ever, make the best war speach ever in the best movie scene ever.
Two masterful actors with a brilliant composer’s symphony in the background. Perfect piece for this spell-binding scene.
a wonderful movie and powerful scene....this timeless 2. movement of Beethovens 7th symphony follows me in my night and day dreams...
Thanks so much for this! I saw the film yesterday - everyone should see it. *lump in throat*
Historical music, for an historical moment ❤❤
One word: Magnificent :)
what a powerful scene. at 1:50 when he stops to say "war" lionel signals: fuck, fuck, fuck! to say so much with so little - ingenious.
I love this movie so much!!! Such an amazing scene!!!!
Breathtaking
I think that is a good method. If someone with a stammer can sing without missing a word or note then why shouldn’t it work the other way with someone reading something while listening to music. It’s amazing what the brain can do.
OMG this scene is so powerful ! Thanks for posting :)
I wonder what the queen was thinking when this actually took place in 1939?
*"Europe Has Fallen.*
*The Old World Is Dead.*
*They Are Coming".*
;-)
I've had speech problems in my life, so I can totally relate to George VI!
And I've also been helped by speech therapy!
@Badaktor I thought the same thing! Yes, Bale was great, but I felt Rush did a magnificent job with this role! I felt like I could feel everything he felt, every emotion.
Does anyone know what version of the movement this is from.? Or was it arranged for the film? It is the best version I've heard.
Taylor Walsh i think it was similar with Leonard Bernstein’s version of Beethoven Symphony No.7 - 2nd movement, way before the movie came out. Yes I agree, this is how it should be, slow and solemn. Beautifully done.
This was one of Leonard Bernstein's favorite's to conduct.
It took me forever to remember what's the name of the music or which movie I've heard it before! Fuck. Finally found it.
A British king declaring war on Germany who is of Austrian-German heritage. Divine Poetry
The film is being shown inverted ( left to right ).
It does. almost all videos do that now, so far so good
Just watched Knowing with Nicolas Cage where they use it as well. I prefer it here.
The music is by Beethoven. Therefore, there is no copyright on it. The video, however, is copyright.
beautiful
Lol I’ve played this in my orchestra
I was wondering why they used a German composer for this scene.
it's in reserve, from an opposite angle, mirror image. look at the radio station writings
interestings.
Is it just me or is the audio out of sync
speech against germans
use german music xD
It wasn't Germany in Beethoven's days. He was "born in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and part of the Holy Roman Empire".
as a fact, yes, you re right
but, as a joke... i didn't know Beethoven was a composer in ww2 age
music is universal , it's like oxygen ... without boundaries ...
Hissane - thank you. Had Beethoven been alive, he most certainly would have been against the Nazis. He was for idealistic ideas of freedom, love, peace and against war.
Indeed ! For example, Beethoven dedicated his 3rd Symphony to Napoleon for being the last guardian of the ideals of the french Revolution and Republic. After learning the same Napoleon had proclaimed himself emperor, he crossed out the dedication so forcefully he ripped the paper and broke his quill.
The 1 person that dislikes this video can't deal with their stammering problem.
Great cut scene, really wanna watch the movie, but I dont understand why everyone was so happy and giving applause? I havent scene the movie yet, is there a context I'm missing?? I'd assume those are so dark times, and I'd expect a different reaction...
Because he had a speech impediment and it was unexpected that he’d ever give a speech
"Music composed by Terry Davis" - He wishes.
@19521888 I deliberately did that, because the music in the video is copyrighted.
@jeremyaaron89 Beethoven's symphony is copyrighted?! I find that hard to believe!
@Edbrad well, maybe to their softwares. We'll wait and see.
George the Vi was one of the best kings England has ever had! I mean, he took on hitler and won!
I laughed when they showed his brother listening to George.
@Edbrad lets hope it.
There will always be Metacafe in case it doesnt work
What we all need, especially in the United States, is a good monarch. Democracy has failed us all.
Not democracy failed you, the politicians who betrayed and misused democracy, are failed you.
Still, a return to monarchy would be good
Yes, because the blood of millions slain for a royal family instead of a sovereign nation is a far better idea.
Monarchy in itself contradicts democracy. But many seemingly democratic countries such as the US or Britain have elements to them which contradicts the very label of democracy that's proudly shouted by civilians and politicians alike. That said, way better than authoritarian nonsense.
No form of government is without corruption. Whether it is a democracy, a monarchy, or as we have here in the states, a constitutional and representative republic.
Any one can function well, even a truly benevolent dictatorship, and autocracy could sound good on paper if it existed only to ensure an incompetent and self-serving bureaucracy of politicians doesn't trample the rights and the citizenry. The problem is that power corrupts.
I guess they chose Beethoven because he stands for Germany as the enemy.
+Sardonicus83 That's precisely what the Allies did, when they used the Fifth Symphony during WWII. They loved the thought of using a German's music to rally against the Germans.
We can go one better. The first four notes of Beethoven’s fifth also spell out V for victory in morse code. V also being the Roman numeral for five.
16 people got this wrong.....
14 Nukes brought me here
Stop not allegretto in the background🤣
They do not afford me the right to an attorney, much less honor my right to seek asylum. So, free, USA. So free.
Renee Kadlubek what
Bruce Wayne What’s the question?
@@reneekad what does this have to do with the video
Bruce Wayne Use your imagination.
Sadly, 2:30 - 3:10 applies today in the UK ; even if the elected Political and Media class tells you otherwise . This time , the cancer of a totalitarian ideology is not across The Channel ....No, today that ideology is spouted with impunity in the streets and we stand around watching .
😭
mirrored lol
Love exposure did it better
In this grave hour, the world calls upon England to grow up. Royalty is not real. Stop being subjects and peons. - Earth
+andrew19k And replace them with what? Some figurehead President who changes every few years, has no power, no historical value, and btw would still cost taxpayers money?
+James Trout ikr? I would rather have a monarch who brings in tourism and tradition.
oh, please. Go back under the rock whence you came.
In this grave hour, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and it's territories and Commonwealth call upon andrew19k to take his head out of his arse, and to declog it's arteries from the utter shite and tripe that inhabit it. We call upon this declogging to be done speedily and resolutely, or, it shall be our position to do it for him by force of arms.
Well I like my Queen so you can fuck right off.
