    Wish I had a way to show my set up in the comments. I got a large pistol case with a cb, quad band radio and a couple handhelds , plus a inverter and the antennas broke down so they fit in the case. Got a bag with HF and potable multiban vertical and solar with one of those batteries. I like messing with radios lol

    Great job. I have the FT-8900 in an Armoloq Manpack w/ Dakota LiFEPO4 battery. Love my Yaesu FT-8900 and the Armoloq Manpack. Keep in mind, if you have the quadband radio, make sure u have the correct antenna to be able to utilize all the bands. Gonna have to get the KastKing bag to put everything in. Have it in a backpack now but like the KastKing bag.

    Overall, good video. With respect to batteries, please do not call a LiFePo 4 battery a "Lithium ION"...Lithium ION is a very different chemistry than Lithium IRON Phosphate (LiFePo4) like you showed there. It is becoming a very common mistake but again, they are not the same. Also, when you make a backpack radio like that, be VERY careful using any power over 5 watts that close to your body. You have many organs that resonate around the VHF range (liver, spleen, kidneys) and 50 watts can literally cook your organs. You would want to always use low power and if you wanted to use more, you would have to use a cable and set your antenna up at least 10 feet away. I hope this comment does not sound too negative, I did enjoy the video.

      In Vietnam what was the watts put out by the radios the RTOs carried? I think it was a concern to health but definitely not a priority because RTOs life expectancy were really short.

  • @bwillan
    @bwillan Місяць тому +2

    To take full advantage of the 4 bands of this radio, will require at least 2 external antennas. No point having 50 watts of power if you don't have a proper antennas to take advantage if it. You could make one for the 10m and 6m as a dual band antenna with a Folded Skeleton Sleeve Antenna. (youtube videos show it).

    • @gridbasedotnet
      @gridbasedotnet  Місяць тому +2

      They make quad band antennas, so you wouldn’t have to have 2 separate antennas.

    Add a Genisun solar charge controller and a solar panel and you can work off grid for ages! I built mine with a FT-857d sadly no longer made allows HF as well then. If you switch to Anytone or Tytera with DMR you loose 6m & 10m but gain encryption and longer range in simplex mode...

    Great content. Could you please recommend a similar radio that is waterproof/weatherproof?

    • @gridbasedotnet
      @gridbasedotnet  Місяць тому +1

      There are none that are waterproof or weatherproof. This is due to the fact that these larger types of radios that have higher wattage levels also create more heat. Being that they create more heat, they have to have cooling vents and fans.
      This prevents being able to water proof them. A water tight bag is what you’d be looking for in this instance.

  • @miroslavmajer5155

    Could you talk also talk about what types of antenas should we look for? I mean - parameters.

    • @gridbasedotnet
      @gridbasedotnet  Місяць тому +1

      That’s dependent on the frequency you’re transmitting on. But in most cases you’re going to find that these types of radios transmit on UHF & VHF frequencies. Meaning that you only will need one properly tuned antenna to function on both bands, such as the QP whip from ZBM2 Industries that was mentioned on the video.

    • @miroslavmajer5155
      @miroslavmajer5155 Місяць тому

      @@gridbasedotnet Well, yes, but I am in EU and the cost of the antena plus shipping costs would be crazy high. The solution for me is to try finding something locally. That's the reason why I am asking. And yes, UFH/WHF is the core usage, as you mentioned :)

    • @gridbasedotnet
      @gridbasedotnet  Місяць тому +1

      Signal Stik may be a good alternative. The EU is big on radio, I’m sure there are some good resellers over there. But, since I’m not familiar with EU comms I probably won’t be of much help.

    How would I tie in an old cellphone to run aprs? It would be easy to tie in charging to keep the phone running, it would allow me to drop the pack ontop of a hill, and create a mobile digipeater, as well as some other fun things.

    what kind of range to you get with something like this compared to just a handheld? I live in Oregon and my Brother is about 30-35 miles away with a small mount between us. I'm looking for a setup that could reach that distance and defeat that geographic barrier

    • @gridbasedotnet
      @gridbasedotnet  Місяць тому

      It’s largely terrain specific. But, with good antenna height that exists above range obstacles and proper antenna/coax configurations, 30-35mi wouldn’t be a problem.

  • @abccde3832
    @abccde3832 Місяць тому

    I wouldn't say the most radios go between 4 and 8 Watts. Most profesional, quality brands, go up to 5W, including military for example Harris 152*. And there is good reason, range depends on Line of Sight which is where VHF/UHF band live. When I say brands I mean, Yaeesu, Motorola, Hytera, Harris etc..
    *Harris has 8Watts option, but that is used for sattelite transmission that work in short bursts. Not in handheld day to day situtations.

  • @Signedpeach
    @Signedpeach 14 днів тому

    Won't matter how much power you have at vhf/uhf if there is something in the way, get some height or use hf freqs to get further. I can assure you that it is not just the military who use hf freqs. Study for a ham licence and increase your knowledge.

      Correct. No SSB on the TH9800. but, there’s not really a full-power alternative that offers that in the same price bracket. So, for what it is, nice to have. Especially if you have some handhelds that also do 6m & 10m. Interoperability is increased.
