I got to play a Gibson Dove that was played by Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley. The funny part was nobody had told me the history of the guitar until after I was done playing it. I think it would have freaked me out. I would have been too overwhelmed with the idea of what it was to relax and actually play the guitar. Then I just stared at it in the guitar stand. Just looking at it incomplete awe.
@Billyclub ClarkOne of Lemmy's old chicks hooked up with Mick Jagger and when they asked her how it was she answered that it was good but not as good as Mick Jagger (supposedly the real Mick couldn't beat his own fame, he couldn't stand up to the godlike picture of him that lives in people's minds you know) :D
@@MatthewScottmusic The guitar was in the possession of Bob Johnston. He recorded Bob Dylan's first six albums, Simon and Garfunkel's albums, the first two. And he worked with Elvis Presley on Blue Hawaii. So the guitar was put up for collateral on a music deal. It was sitting in this living room at a stage manager's house. And he says to me would you like to play a nice Gibson Dove. Well there it is all beautiful and nice and we are in his living room having tea. He sets me up in a chair with the guitar. I do my usual rut, a series of chords, some riffs, a combination of chords and riffs, some arpeggio stuff. It was a wonderful piece of wood with great tone. So I finish. I take the guitar off. He wiped it off with a clean cloth and set it back in the stand.. We go back to drinking tea. And then he tells me the story. I just inherited my late Grandfather's 1964 Gibson Dove... He played along side Don Gibson in the 50's and 60's and also picked with him on the Grand Ole Opry.....
Matthew, I was going to ask you if you'd consider doing some live streams. I remember the sound of that guitar, amazing for an acoustic with an adjustable bridge (usually considered tone suckers). I have a couple Japanese made acoustics from the early Seventies that had adjustable bridges and I switched them out for bone saddles which improved them but yours sounds amazing.

i dont disagree; but the Bob Ross of guitars is Dan Erlywine, he literally wrote the book on guitar maintenance, and does videos for the Stewmac channel, you can listen to his soft knowledgable voice for hours
22 years ago, I commissioned a luthier to make me a classical guitar. I keep it humidified and it keeps making beautiful music. do this in your twenties so that you can feel the evolution in tone from the wood aging.
Your first video of ths guitar inspired me to buy a 1963 Southern Jumbo and that guitar blows me away on a daily basis, so glad I got it as it suits me perfectly.

I was just watching a Black Crowes video from 1991 and thought of you. I'm pretty sure Rich Robinson was playing a Dove like yours. It sounded so good! 👍😎🎸🎶
I’ve been following you a while now and loved the tunes you posted from the studio. This piece at the beginning of this video rocks too! I can’t wait until you have music that I can buy. Keep us posted...I’ll buy as soon as it comes out!
Beautiful guitar and great history of the Gibson acoustic.. I own a 1972 hummingbird that is now starting to show its age with cracking and a nice bow in the top! I dont play it much now but it's a beautiful thing that has pride of place in my living room.. cant wait to see it finished
Although you say that you don't want under any circumstances to remove the adjustable bridge, it is by doing precisely that and replacing the bridge with a non-adjustable one that would breathe new life into the instrument. Granted that it would make no sense from a "vintage-value" of the piece; but it would sure sound a whole lot better!
I am working a Trade right now for one and giving up my Best Les Paul for it, like you I wouldnt change a thing and glad mine does not require any of the repairs your did
Wow, what a cool guitar. I never knew they put tune-o-matic bridges on their acoustics. I seen the other adjustable bridges they did in the 60's, but never seen that. I went on ebay to see what was out there, and I seen a 67 with a tune-o-matic too.
Hi Mathew, I have a Wonderfull 65? Dove (cherry top) with the same shrinking pickguard problem, with EXACTLY the same crack at the neck and pickguard spot as yours. Mine may have a couple braces slightly loose at the ends also. My pickguard looks to be very brittle compared to yours. QUESTION: what heat source did you use to get it off? I'll probably take it to a pro, but I'd love to get the guard off and get it humidified first to see if it improves. Thanks, Dave
Definitely would enjoy the livestreams on this channel as well as what your musical preferences are. I hope the acoustic guitar gets even better and stay safe dude!💙🤘👍
Peaaaaaaaaaaaace! And thanks for inspiring so many of us. Giving us love with music and making our lives better, especially in these days. Stay healthy n' happy!
A guitar with a voice as good as that one needs to keep singing. Reinforce it's innards & it should play great for decades to come. It's a beauty. I've got an old J-200 from the late 60's, which I wouldn't part with for love nor money.
My friend's '68 Dove pickguard completely disintegrated, like pieces of a mosaic. He also had to take out the tune-o-matic to get it playable, but it's good to hear yours works.
Couldn't agree with you more Matthew. For Years, Decades really, I played nothing but my electric guitars. Then one day my Wife purchased me a most beautiful acoustic. It's really very difficult to explain the ways in which that guitar inspires me to play. Just as a Les Paul will bring out different playing styles as compared to a Telecaster, the Acoustic has very much the same effect. At least for myself it does. Great guitar and so very worthy of repair. Good luck with the repair(s), so many side journeys, so much to experience and learn.
Great guitar and I know it sounds great in person. I have an old Gibson country western acoustic that is probably my best. I've been told that when re-gluing the pickguard, some people recommend just dots of clear silicone to re-attach them, and the shrinkage will not do further damage to the top. I have a 63 P bass where the pickguard shrunk so bad that the thin aluminum ground sheet underneath was sticking out on the edges.
So happy you’re going to get it fixed up. If you ever get curious about a traditional bridge and saddle, make up an ebony plug and bone saddle. Don’t have to glue it in if it’s a good fit and it’ll likely sound even better. That ABR-1 mass is definitely damping the sustain and overall tone. It sure is nice to have the intonation adjustments though.
I have a bunch of info for you, that I tried to get you in a previous comment that Facebook obviously didn’t allow to posted. I also have a vintage Dove that I restored, I’m not very good dealing with this format so let me know how I can communicate this info to you if your interested.

If you plan on figuring out a way to fix that I've seen this trick done when you go to refret a guitar you can just take some of the fretboard down with some sand paper but just barely anything. But enough to get a good amount of the wood dust left over from sanding then use that with clear superglue or something similar to pack and fill the wholes then sand down to level with the rest of the board. You can barely tell anything ever happens too. Its a handy trick with these old acoustics. Or just for working on acoustics in general. Take care dude and keep the videos coming!

put a soaking wet clothe in a small plastic bowl and sit it inside the sound hole, cover the sound hole with something that won't absorb moisture, leave it 5 days to weak and those cracks will close up nearly completely, they should then be glued and sealed. nice axe man definitely worth saving.
I think that bridge is killer, Intonatable is good! And yeah , shrinkage is not cool LOL! But she's swelling back up so that's good. I've got an acoustic that's about 40 years old. Does it effect the playability at all? If you plan on figuring out a way to fix that I've seen this trick done when you go to refret a guitar you can just take some of the fretboard down with some sand paper but just barely anything.
