FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live wrote and appears in this comedy about the alternately funny and terrifying pecking order among teenage girls. Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) is a 15-year-old girl who has spent most of her life in Africa, where she was home-schooled by her zoologist parents. When her family relocates to the United States, Cady finds herself attending a high school in suburban Illinois, where she gets a crash course in the various sub-strata of the student body: the jocks, the cheerleaders, the stoners, the "cool" kids, and so on. Much to her surprise, Cady finds herself embraced by a clique of rich and popular girls known to outsiders as "the Plastics," led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen Weiners (Lacey Chabert), and Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried). While Cady is grateful for her new friends, it doesn't take long for her to realize how manipulative they can be, and she soon discovers she's violated an unwritten law when she goes out on a date with Aaron (Jonathan Bennett), who is charming, good looking...and Regina's former boyfriend. It isn't long before Regina and her pals are on the warpath, and Cady must face a level of vengeful behavior for which years in the jungle never prepared her. Yanis Tang I’m glad Karen is the only one of the three who can really stick up for herself. Gretchen let Regina push her past the breaking point before she finally confided in Cady about what Regina is really like.
It reminds me of total drama island when Lindsey finally told off Heather. It’s like the dumber girls only take it because they don’t realize theyre being manipulated but when they do... they clap back.
The way she said "So?" at 0:12 sounded so vulnerable and nervous, along with everything else in this scene indicating that she's losing her confidence.
There was nothing Regina could do, Cady was a made woman and she wasn't.
The amount of layers this movie has is amazing.

The saddest part for me was that in this scene Regina was genuinely insecure about her body and those sweatpants were the only thing she could wear. The second saddest part is when she looked to cady for help. That part killed me because we can say all we want about how Regina hated cady but she looked to her like she thought she was going to stand up for her.😢
I noticed this too. This movie was so beautifully crafted that every little detail contributes. 👏🏼

I love the subtle symbolism of this scene. Regina is sitting all slouched over, looking sick and weak, her hair disheveled, gaining weight, and lacking her original confidence. Cady, on the other hand, is sitting up straight, looking fresh, her clothes are new, her hair looks great, and she's got a confident demeanor and posture. If any new kid were to walk into the cafeteria, they would assume Cady is the leader of The Plastics, not Regina.
Perfect little touch by the writers and producers.

I remember watching some behind the scenes stuff, and I remember the wardrobe department saying that Cady would start off plain, but become more fashionable as the film went on, and Regina would start off pretty polished, but would become more casual and put less effort into her appearance as Cady sabotaged her :)

You can notice that Gretchen and Karen stand against Regina in this scene. This is probably because of Cady.
When Karen was being called stupid by Regina, Cady was the one who talked to her.
When Gretchen was being needing to talk with someone about how mean Regina is, Cady was there for her.
It feels kinda good to see them both standing for themselves in this scene
Yeah this scene is payback for all the times Regina was rude to her friends. Yeah it sucks that Regina’s is insecure and ashamed of her body in this scene. But now she knows how it feels.
Yep I loved that cady built an emotional connection with both of them bc that’s what they lowkey craved from Regina this whole time, but they were only treated like lapdogs.
I really like this scene because it shows us how smart Regina actually is. When the girls mention that wearing sweatpants on Monday is against the rules Regina replies saying the rules aren’t real. This shows how manipulative Regina is by making the rest of the girls believe they can’t break any rule. Regina perfectly knows it’s just a child’s game that’s why she does not give a f*ck.
It could also demonstrate how oblivious Karen and Gretchen both were before Cady came along and opened their eyes.
The rules only existed for Regina’s benefit, and once her followers figured that out, it was Over for her.

I thought the change in Regina’s appearance and clothing after she started gaining weight and feeling less confident was so accurate, I’m sure pretty much every girl at one stage of her life has experienced that. Love that they showed that change, because to a lot of people on the outside people would assume Regina was perfect and couldn’t have gone through anything.

Seconds before Regina tried to destroy her new found confidence (having the audacity to bring up the rules) by calling her vest disgusting and then Gretchen kicks Regina off her throne and Karen is loving it. Regina tried so hard to remind the other girls of their place to try and gain some power back and it didn't work.

Cady kind of was though. Cady eventually turned into a clone and Regina and began copying her behavior and even talking just like her during some scenes. She borrowed Damien’s pink shirt after they told her she had to wear pink on Wednesday and again when Gretchen told her to write in the burn book when she lied about the teacher selling drugs.
That’s what makes this movie so great. Those small “insignificant” details like the hoop earrings in this scene. A foreshadowing that Cady was about to dethrone the queen and take over
I know that 0:23 is meant to be comical, but at the same time, I know know exactly the pain of what Gretchen had to go through. In that tiny moment, she sort of stands up for herself after all of the times Regina stepped all over her. Good for you, Gretch.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Rachel McAdams was nominated for some sort of award for this movie. yes, I know it’s a teen movie, but I feel like she plays this character so well, and it’s so hard to believe that she’s an actress playing Regina. This scene, the first cafeteria scene, the Janis monologue, and even the burn book distribution scene are such great scenes not even from a comedic standpoint, but a realistic standpoint.
Tbh Mean Girls is underrated in the sense that people write it off as just a pop-culture piece or a teen/girly movie, and don't really give it serious praise. There's so many layers within the acting, costume design, writing, themes and great cinematography. I feel like people only really give film serious praise if it's *obviously* artsy like Bladerunner (both original and sequel), Interstellar, or Joker.

Kids these days probably have a hard time imagining having to navigate high school without all that, but I for one am Very glad I graduated high school without dealing with Tiktok or Twitter.

That's technically not true! She wore jeans when she stormed into Cady's party with the big silver coat and again during the scene when she was hit by the bus. Then on the phone when she was talking to the girls while eating the donut.

I felt sorry for Regina when she said, that sweatpants are all that fits her. She only fooled Cady once when she kissed Aaron, but Cady fooled her by ruining her body, breaking up with Aaron and dragging her out from the plastics. That Cady made Aaron break up with Regina was enough, but not enough for Cady.
Regina was a horrible person who ruined lives but you felt sorry for her because she couldn’t fit her clothes?
