- This a video my son shot of me using my "Bamboo Bulldozer" to dig yellow groove bamboo plants in Illinois. I'll never use a shovel again to dig these plants because they are so difficult and the shovel usually gets destroyed.
Word goes he is stil out there digging bamboo with arms that would make the rock jealous.

We specialise in removing bamboo, including the root. An alternative would be to hire a mini digger or mini digger with driver for general large area removal, or jack hammer with an adapted 6inch chisel where the digger can’t reach, especially where it abuts a wall or fence. The tool you have adapted is great but it will take a lot out of you and a great deal of time to shift a large quantity. You will also have to remove the rhizomes.
A digger will rip out the roots with ease and in not time, you can collect at your leisure if you want something to do, or of course the roots can be dropped into a trailer.
The biggest problem is disposing of the roots once they’re out because they will grow where you drop them. Uplifting is only one aspect of bamboo control.

I reckon a sharp spade might of worked just as well because the culms are not tight together. And there for the root mass is not very matted. And also, the ground appeared soft. Or a sawzall, or what ever you Americans call them. Us Aussies call them reciprocating saws.
You may have saved me weeks of work. I've broken so many shove and maddocks.
I just use sawzall to cut in the ground through the roots, then use shovel or prybar to lift up!
Yeah, but they won't transplant very well after that which is why he's digging them up. For destruction, I use an old Yazoo high-wheeled brush mower with the front of the deck removed to expose the blade
I do the same. Extra long aggressive blade works wonders.

I have a jack hammer. Wonder if I could make an attachment for that. I will want to dig up some of my moso next year.
How about a reciprocating saw around that perimeter? Worst case you replace the inexpensive blades.

Lot of work there. Try using a reciprocating saw - it takes about 15 seconds to cut the soft rhizomes all the way round then just pull the clump up.
In perfect soil conditions that would work. Problem is our soil is full of buried treasure.....bricks, tiles, metal, etc.
The previous owner I bought the house from buried sheets and sheets of glass, tiles, bricks, empty cat food cans, empty shotgun shells, a bicycle, bed mattress, a pram, plastic takeaway containers, whine bottles and largest so far half a car, and bamboo and its roots had grown all around it. I had to get a digger to get out along with the.bamboo, and I still have not finished, this plant is so invasive it should be illegal and banned from being planted
I have a lot of bamboo in my backyard that I wanted to get rid off. I was wondering if I can use a jack hammer or SDS rotary hammer with chisel bid to tear up the dense bamboo roots after cutting off the bamboos? I don't have neither.
I'd rent a backhoe for a day.
Does it help only to remove the new shoots without digging up the rhizomes? Without photosynthesis, the spread has to stop at some point ... or not?

Hey guys. I found a sure way to get rid of bamboo, sort of by accident. I had bamboo growing and invading my lawn from a swamp and had a losing battle controlling it. The solution is mineral oil. Yes, the stuff you spray on fences to treat them. Cut it down as low much as you can, then soak the soil in mineral oil. I did it last year and it's still dead and not coming back.

Everything is welded together. All steel is mild steel since that is available locally.

Tell me about it, cutting ryzomes and transplanting bamboos is hard work, butvyour lucky it doesn't seem like your ryzomes went more than 8 inches, I'm transplanting phystatchy vivax giant bamboo and their roots went more than 12 inches deep. But u are right this is a great work out. Lol
Seems like a jack hammer with a spade bit on it should work. What would be the downside of that?
Tried that. I used the asphalt bit that i rented with the hammer which is six inches wide. Works great going into the soil and cuts the rizhomes with no effort but the machine is so heavy you can’t pull it back out of the ground. It gets bound up between the root ball and the rizhomes. We had to use an eight foot 2x4 as a pry bar to get the tool out of the ground. My grove is so thick there just any room for all the hardware.
@@woodmeistera1 Yeah, the 90lb jack hammer is heavy. I can see what you're saying. I also have one of those bosch hammer drills, about halfway between a jack hammer and a regular sized hammer drill. Much easier to maneuver. Maybe I'll give that a shot.
This is my third year since planting some of those huge running bamboo and it's very clear they're off and running. Which is great fun to watch, but it's got me thinking now's the time to do the perimeter trenching. I'd rent a ditch witch but they don't go deep enough. I'm supposed to go 32". I don't think it's going to be too tangled up yet.

There's bamboo growing in the woods few miles away. I dug up quite a bit and replanted it last year. It all died never grew.why ?
Not sure why the transplanted plants died. One thing it could be is if the plants you dug up were new season growths from a rhizome and didn't have an established root system of their own and were living off the mother plants. When they are separated from their mother without their own root system they will die. Were your plants watered regularly?

You should thank God they died. Don't ever think to.plant them in your own property, always burn bamboo after digging them out, they are like a virus

I'm noticing those things aren't cheap. Maybe a breaker bar would work. I have already have one of those.
Did you find it? I think it was around 300? Breaker bar I don’t think will work. I recently used a sawzall with a 12” pruning blade to go around the clumps and then use my tool to pry them out of the ground. My bamboo bulldozer takes a lot of horsepower to dig all the way around them and I’m not a spring chicken anymore.
@@woodmeistera1 I found one for around that price. How come a breaker bar won't do the trick? It's essentially the same thing without the capacity to leave the cutting head in exactly the same spot while you deliver the hits. Which I can imagine is very helpful. Although, the force would be a bit more focused with a breaker bar since the cutting head isn't quite as wide. A bit blunter maybe.
I'll give it a try when it comes time to move the plants. I hate to spend 300 bucks on something I'm only going to use a few times. I'm seeing the move is best done in late fall or early spring. Right now it's over 100 degrees where I'm at.
There is the sawzall option as well. I'm sure the breaker bar would work as a pry bar.
@@wthomas5697 You’re right about the breaker bar being hard( likely impossible) to strike the same spot on each successive stroke so you’ll be expending much more effort because of all the extra strokes.

I have. That’s actually why I made the tool. The grove is so old and thick there’s no other way to dig the clumps. This spring we’ll be digging some so i’ll do a video of that.

I made this tool. I saw one online years ago called the Rizhomer but I haven’t been able to find it since. I found a similar tool at Bamboo Gardens call the Bamboo Slammer. $325. I made mine for about $75.
A great tool for small job. But I would have used an electric jack hammer with a shovel bit.
I tried that. You can't pull the jack hammer back out of the ground. The jack hammer itself ways around 75 pounds and when the spade is buried in the soil 12" it's takes two guys and a long 2x4 to pry it out.

You completely missed the point -- the objective is to remove and transplant the bamboo to different location -- NOT to destroy it!
a lot of work when you can just rent a mini excavator from your local hardware store for under $300
Who's gonna spend $300 for an excavator to dig six plants? And where the plants are close together you tear up a lot of stuff.
In the video he is demonstrating the tool on 6 bamboo stalks yes. But do you see the other ones tagged? It is wayy more then 6 look again.

I've dug out groves where bamboo grows inches from each other and a excavator works wonders. Must be why its called a excavator...
