  • Back on the Do-All saw this week with the short amount of shop time that I had available.
Time to work on the blade tracking setup for this saw. Like everything else it also has problems. Surprisingly some of the parts for this thing are getting ready for paint and will be finished before you know it. Huge thanks to all my supporters who make this possible. The hollow or bottomless set screw is there to lock the actual set screw as you suspected. The reason it's hollow is really quite simple. Some manufacturers used a grub screw for the same purpose. When you remove the grub screw the chance are pretty good that the Allen socket will be damaged from the grub screw being tightened down too much. The hollow screw works better because the portion of the grub screw that does the damage is not there and the way the screw is machined there is very little contact with the lower set screw. Only upper or higher end manufacturers used the hollow screws as they are hard to get and relatively expensive when compared to a grub screw.
Regarding the Smiths torch, they are arguably the best engineered and made torch on the market. They use "O" ring seals on the torch to body connection instead of tapers negating the need for wrenches. The cutting tips use a soft graphite gasket seal and the nut is internal thread to the torch heads male thread. As a result, the tips are hand tightened to the body again without the need for a wrench. All connections are silver brazed unlike some competitors who use threaded connections. Smiths also incorporates sintered bronze filtres on both inlets and on newer models the flashback arrestors are built in to the torch handle negating the need for external arrestors which throw the torch out of balance. That SC model with cut up 8" in thickness. How do I know these things about Smiths torches? Because they were the only torches I had on my welding rigs from start to finish and were totally reliable even though they had already seen 20+ years of service with my late Father prior to my getting them. The only things ever replaced on them was a couple of valves that were damaged by accident and some "O" ring seals. They have now been passed on to my son. 60 years of use and still going strong.

I thoroughly enjoy the fact that you spend the time to restore these machines. Where I live there is a building that is about to be torn down and just recently they moved an old, very large, Do-All upright bandsaw out on the sidewalk. Now it's just sitting in the weather, most likely headed for the scrap yard...sad.

Steve the DoAll saw I did maintenance on had a snap ring to hold the wheels on also had a grease fitting to grease the bearings if using sealed bearings no need for the grease fitting. If you are remaking the shaft and want to add the grease fitting would be easy to do at the same time.

Doing a great job Steve, it’s funny how this project has progressed! In the beginning you were pretty surprised/bummed when something was broken or unserviceable but now you just expect that it’ll be broken and surprised when something isn’t!
On the bright side, when you’re done with this saw it’ll last you the rest of your life and then some! Plus, I don’t know about you but I take a lot more pride in the tools that I’ve repaired and restored versus the stuff I’ve bought new at the store.

A friend of mine has a squirrel, raised it from a baby. The blue color that DoAll uses is nice. And correct for the machine. The smith torch is a good one. I have 2 of them. One the size you received and one about 24" long. It doesnt come apart. Hence, needing 2 of them. The one you have i only use for braise welding or the rose bud . Consider a 00 tip. They are really nice for thin sheet metal.

Hi Steve. First time commenting but I've been watching your videos for quite some time - love them! Regarding the Kia - I've driven a 2010 Soul 2U 2.0L for the past 10 years and it's been super reliable, even through our friendly Canadian winters (I chuckle a little at your comments about it being cold when it's around -10C - that's almost shirtsleeve BBQ weather in central Alberta in winter LOL). Just under 310,000km on it and it's still going strong. The only significant repair I've had to do to it happens to be replacing the lower control arms for the same reason - the ball joints were showing their age (dry and squeaking although surprisingly not particularly loose yet). I could have just replaced the ball joints but the entire control arm is cheap and I had read it's pretty much just as easy to replace the entire arm and that way you also get new rubber bushings at the frame end. I didn't quite catch whether you've already replaced the control arm or still need to but if you haven't yet it's not hard. It's a minor pain to wiggle the arms out at the frame end and get the new ones positioned and the bolts back in but not that bad - I'm sure it'll be a breeze for you. I'm sure the car will serve you well for a good while to come. Keep the awesome videos coming and I'll be watching every one!

I think that is part of the 'Restoration Video' secret, the paint makes all the hard work pop. You can work magic with genius tricks of the trade and all the machinists will be impressed, put a coat of paint on it and the house will be up on it's feet applauding :)

Off white, or machine white is really beautiful. I love 2 ton stuff, imagine the smaller parts in dark gray but not black against a light gray or machine white. Done so everything alternates color from piece to piece.

Dude! You need a parts tumbler. Labor saving and the hardware comes out looking beautiful.

Those smith torches are nice. We had them in ag when I was in school. They are however more expensive when you go buy tips.
