Born in Belmont, a suburb of Port of Spain, Bailey grew up in Les Coteaux, Tobago. He won the Road March in 1974 with “Bassman” and 2001 with the tune “Stranger” making him the competition’s oldest winner.
Bailey was also was the second person to win both the International Soca Monarch and the Trinidad Road March competitions simultaneously, a feat he accomplished in 2001 with his song “Stranger”.
He won the Calypso Monarch in 2000 with “What’s Wrong With Me” and “Scratch Meh Back”.
Socahub Video is the home of Caribbean Carnival Culture which includes new and old soca music, new and old calypso music, steel band music and Soca Chutney music From Trinidad and across the Caribbean. So sorry he’s gone, so happy to have lived to enjoy his artistry. He was one of the major reasons why I one day back in the early 90’s boarded a trans Atlantic plane to carnival Trinidad.

I was visiting K.H. Recording Studios from Canada with Byron Lee back in 1975 the first time I heard Shadow. He was laying the basic tracks for "Bassman" His bass arrangements were so uniquely different and off the wall that I became fascinated and followed him from the till this day.
His song "Povety is a Crime". Is one of the all time very best songs ever written and performed in any rhythm

I remembered when the mighty shadow sang BASSMAN. My husband used to make steel pan in a little village in central .. namely ORANGE FIELD RD CARAPICHAIMA.. My husband gathered all the youths who was interested in learning to play steel pan.. he made the pans with his 2 hands while I looked on.. All this preparation was to build a steel band to play the mighty shadow song BASSMAN.. They practice that song day and night until they got it right :) They did got it right ; he named the band PLAY BOY'S! I SWORE I REALLY HEARD A BASEMAN IN MY HEAD :) The Mighty Shadow music is UNIQUE.. His arrangement was from the spirit.. I believe he loved music from his soul.. DID I MENTION WE WON THE COMPETETION WITH BASSMAN..WE DID! WINSTON BAILEY (aka) the MIGHTY SHADOW.. MAY YOUR UNIQUE MUSICAL SOUL SLEEP IN PEACE!!!!! TRINIDAD&TOBAGO need to start recognizing the veterans of CALYPSO before they say good bye to the world.. let them see their legacy not after they gone.. YOU LIVED YOUR DREAM WINSTON BAILEY!
