Volkswagen is really squeezing all the juice out of its Polo platform; it already underpins the popular Polo and the T-Cross. Now the German brand has just launched this, the Taigo, onto South African showroom floors.
So what's this Taigo all about? Is it just a fat Polo for more money? We sent our video journalist Ciro De Siena to find out.
In this video we take a detailed look at the various Taigo trim levels, engine and gearbox options, the boot space of the Taigo vs the T-Cross, the interior and the extensive list of optional extras.
VW Taigo price in South Africa (July 2022)

Vw Pricing is another pandemic
All German cars.
Has disease and pestillence gone away? Or changed and adapted?
@@blackrain7206 all cars are getting expensive, just saw some pricing on KIA spares, same as VW pricing.
I can get a better second hand car for that price ,with more power even.
Car Inflation over the last 20yrs outpased CPI quite substantially..
Great review, I went to look at one but all the offers were over 500k they’ve totally over specked these cars with pointless extras. Car prices are becoming ludicrous.
I love and appreciate Ciro’s conclusion on which to opt for between the Polo, Taigo and T-roc. Essentially, VW in my opinion made a mistake when they got rid of the Jetta, not all of us want these SUV’s they are forcing down on us.
It was bad enough that we didn't get the Jetta GLI.
That Dieselgate took a knock on them, also the electric path now so cars will be replacing what we used to so that inevitably its about enough space for the battery packs which the smaller lower platforms wont be able to accomodate or "justify" financially ...VW always claimed the only reasom they kept making the Jetta was because it sold in USA...yet here in SA its the go to for many and I have not seen it not sell ever since it was first made...if you ask me they should have kept the jetta in the market...it would always have sold if they could make the golf hybrid then jetta was even better of an option...the last sporty jetta we got here was the mk3 VR6 and the odd V5 im the Jetta 4(a few V6 mk4 Bora imports i have seen also)but specifically reffering to whats sold from manufacturers in our market...imagine a jetta 5 R32,Jetta 6/7R etc...guess those execs are forgetting the VW slogan "for the love of peoples cars"...
Yes! I love Sedans. They are sexier, way more Aerodynamic, fuel efficient and they are more spacious. I rather buy the new Toyota Corolla Sedan XR and still have some change in my pocket than buying this!
@@ozzi4627 you nailed it. They really lost it.
@@Neevarshan_Naicker exactly. The Jetta was a good offering u like their new cars that are all the same but just different names and expensive prices.
I love this car. Its so much prettier than the t cross and much more wow wow than the polo. So a very good middle ground. I am totally getting one.
This car is more beautiful compare to polo....
Thank you Ciiro been waiting for this one
This car is kinda like the medium drink at McDonald`s, exactly like the regular with a taller cup and more Ice.
And more plastic in your "paper" cup.
Lol lol spot on man
Like that McD's comparison!
Very true... And 100K extra per car as donation from buyers to help maintaining the brand 😂
Enjoyed this review so much, very informative! Thank you
Your guys are doing a great job, some of the best car videos on youtube.....
Wow, thanks so much! We're glad you enjoy them.
Seriously, 570k for a 1.0 litre engine???
The Tiguan is the only VW that is worth the price
And the Touareg
I'm getting one soon, I love this car
Great video as usual! You Rock !!! Small question ? Why not compare this to the two Chinese brands that have SUVs?
I wouldn't touch VW products with a 10-foot pole. Toyota cars ride forever
Waited for this
I agree with your review. I was impressed when test drive the Tiago - we were 4 males in the car and relative comfort and good performance. Price mmm....
My wife and I have been buying new VW Polos (lease) every 2/3yrs since 1999. When we saw the Taigo, we went and looked at one and asked for delivery date, etc.
The model we wanted was available in a cold of months at a slight £20 per month increase.
My wife mentions that she had always wanted a T-Roc in white, but that it was too much per month for us.
Salesman went away and said if we took a model (2022 facelift) already in build, we could have it in a month for £30 a month extra.
For us that was a real bargain, we now have the car and love it. Had the salesman not put together a really good deal, we would have had a Taigo.
Happy wife, happy life!
Hi, how do you go about to lease a car? I've been looking to do that but don't know where to start? And is it worth it in your opinion?
The Taigo boot is definitely bigger than the T cross . Thanks 🙏 for the review Ciro car prices are going through the roof generally
I've driven the Taigo and the T-Cross, the Taigo's boot space is significantly larger than the T-Cross, probably at least one third larger.
I own the car 3 months. 1.0 liter 110hp DSG Style version plus some more things.
When i heard about the car i was intimidating to what i’m going to see. From close, and after test driving the car i was convinced that it really is the car i want.
After 3 months owning the car for everyday use in the city (Athens/Greece) and 5 trips my review is this:
Super well built car, seems and feels very premium and expensive, very easy to drive and very comfortable. Spaces for 4 adults are more than OK, power is just fine, i mean you get a lot from acceleration and it feels like a bigger engine , in highway is soundproof and comfy, all safety systems makes you relax and enjoy without even trying.
What i would like is a heavier steering wheel in bigger speeds but i can live without that. Totally value for money car, premium beautiful strong and practical.
I enjoy it everyday. Go check it fellas
Καλησπέρα, είμαι και εγώ κάτοχος εδω και 2 μήνες. Εξαιρετικό αυτοκίνητο !
You can only extend the maintenance and service plan with VW SA, not the warranty.
Great review sir however the car for me is just ok but the haval h6 number one 💯💥
This car should of came standard with the 1.5tsi engine with an option of the 6 speed manual at this price for the R line .
The amount of crossovers VW has is absurd. Seems like they're just cannibalising their own products
Total agree. 600k for a jacked up polo no ways .
Yet they (VWSA) don't want to bring back Seat or Skoda in South Africa
@@ChristopherFokkenprawnJohnson The lizard people
Mercedes benz did the same thing with Their AMGs soon we couldnt keep up anymore....
@@lincolndavids2660 I would like to see the Skoda in SA. Vehicles that are available in the UK, such as the Fabia, Octavia, Enyaq, Kodiaq get good reviews. Hope folk haven’t forgotten that when VW brought the Seat into SA decades ago they tried to pitch it above the VW brand when everywhere else it was below!! Hence didn’t catch on very well although sought after secondhand now.
the review i have been waiting for
Car enthusiasts will always prefer the driving dynamics of sedan compared to suv. Cheers.
5:38, please do a video of top 10 cars you would go for for 550k, Bakkies, sedan, SUV, all ranges
The similarities between all the cars, and cross over in price, in the VW range will be extremely confusing for customers.
They have forgotten their target market.
They selling the same nut in different shells... They've lost it, totally!!! Their prices overlap and are insanely on the higher side. Pure robbery!!!
@@MxolisiMashiloane I agree. They busy competing with themselves in a field full of competent opponents.
Thanks for this fair review
Rad slogan. My brain auto’d to alliteration … something like ‘Dream, Discover, Drive.’
Thanks again for the epic/honest review, as always.
Man, i just feel VW Group is pricing themselves outta the SA market. Doesn’t help that the ZAR isn’t playing to anyone’s favour here either. Haval sussed that growing gap (consumer need/want) in the local market and are absolutely cleaning up. Good for them.
Just insane how prices have gone up over the last five years or so.
Thanks again for the vid.
Have a rad rest of the week your side of the woods.
Good review as always.
Quick question, R400 000, what car are getting? Doesn’t matter if Second hand
I have a Taigo R line fully equipped bought a month ago. It’s worry it’s price in this segment in countries with high VAT on cars
Hi, please do a review on the new Tiguan 1.4/2.0 tsi R line all space 2022
Can you do a review on the new VW T-Roc 2L R Line Dsg?
The pricing model of the Taigo makes no sense. For that price you can get a polo gti. The taigo doesn't really offer anything besides looks. Perhaps if the engine choice included a 110kw engine I would say okay. They probably going to bring a 70kw manual in the future.
Go check out Muzi Sambo on UA-cam. The crap he has had with 2 polo gti’s will change your mind about one and possibly VW as a brand.
@@keithmatthias4348 I'm currently owning a polo TSI 1.0 to be precise I don't think I will ever buy a vw in my life....Suzuki is my next stop.....the Swift sport to precise....so yeah vw is getting expensive but not reliable.
@@cliffordnyathi6539 now you are talking, Clifford. The Swift Sport is a brilliant car in my view. Tried to get a new one for my Wife in January last year but nobody had. Think Muzi Sambo was considering one some months ago when the problems started with the Polo.
Dude, I absolutely loved the video man, really nicely done! Subscribing instantly - score one for SA/CPT content. Sadly not the car for me (what I was actually researching on YT), but I look forward to seeing what else you share under the 600k price range.

Came for the Taigo. Stayed for that crisp video review. Bravo
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)
@@Carscoza I More than enjoyed it,it clarified some questions I had about the differences between the Taigo and T-Roc. Keep up the amazing work.
What I’ve learnt with cars is that you must only choose a trim level, engine, gearbox and exterior colour. Don’t spec anything more than that, you don’t need to spec anything more than that. Doing so is just a waist of money. Car companies should learn to comprehensively spec their cars as standard like companies like Lexus. The higher your trim level, the better the spec and that’s it.
R450K +, for a raised polo, no thanks, Il take the haval/Chery brand any day
Exactly where I was going. Haval H6 and Cherry Tigo 8 Pro are cars to go for at R570k you get more for the money. The dash is probably hard plastic on those VWs. I love VW but Europe's pricing is crazy. Less than 560k you get Tiggo 8 Pro Executive or 10k more you get Haval H6 Super Lux.
Sorry VW, I'm not interested. Even the Polo makes no sense selling an Rglone at a price 420 I can get a good Tiggo 7 Pro with that.
@@henrysithole3623 I purchased a Chery Tiggo pro 4 in May, and I couldnt be happier. The spec level you get for a car under R400k, is next level. The thing with the Germans is, everything is an optional extra...you basically paying for the badge, thats all
Id go for the mazda cx 30
@@carlolinks5492 jealous guy over her, have you serviced it? how has that been? Is it queky like some of the jernos say. Consumption man so much to ask you.
@@sibusisombhele3880 fuel consumption is the only issue, but i suspect itl.get better the more the engine is driven in. Currently at 8.8 l but drives well. Had its first service at 5000k yes
When the T Cross 1st came, it was only available in 1lt TSI engine, I hope the Taigo eventually will have the 1.5lt engine.
you dont need that. 1.0 110 dsg is super ok
@@thefitnessproject8362 thank you. It's because of slightly mountainous roads I usually drive on I believe I would need a slightly bigger engine.
I found that in the Polo Life, it does have automatic wipers. So the R-line definitely has it. Ps any chance of trimming the beard??
Did they fix the dq200 gearbox problems?
All these optional extras are standard in the Haval🤣
But its not a VW😗
Please do the new amarock review when it's out 🙏🏽
We definitely will! Thanks for asking
When are you doing a video for T Roc
For the price as tested, my choice will be the Hyundai Kona N-series 1.6T
any possibility of a 1,5l 110kw perhaps ?
Can you do review for kia sonet please.
VW missed a trick by not selling it locally with the 1.5 motor found in the T Cross. Pass.
Actually you can buy it with a 1.5 ltr😅
Not in South Africa, only the 1.0L in any trim@@manuellangius2896
Brother good video,,but some advice can u give price's in £ and dollar, euros!!! Plz !! So we can understand the price !!!
Great review !! I think it's time I say it. Vw n their pricing is insane. They think their the only ones with new tech. Maybe it's time to move over to brands like Haval or Cherry. 580k will get me alot n I'll have change. Vw is no longer for the people.
If VW vehicles are so great, why do we have to pay extra for extended warranties and service plans? And if the model replacement cycle is (typically) 5 years, why not make the standard terms 5 years? I sincerely hope there comes a day when manufacturers regret taking advantage of their market position.
So as of March 2023, what would you buy for R570 000 ?
this car is beautiful...
You mentioned a lot of features that come with the R line of this car, for R586k and its baby you say is just over R480k, now I wonder how does it look or what features it has or it has nothing in a way that it forces you to buy the R line 🤔
"Volkswagen, the affordable car for the masses . . ." LOL - Famous last words!!!
"Fat Polo" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi, I'm watching your video from the Manila. I'm just curious with Volkswagen's DSG transmission. Do you experience jerkiness on the car on stop-and-go traffic? I think most DCT transmissions behave this way (DSG being a DCT).
What Car do you own Sir Mr Car reviewer ?
Please do the Renault Triber!!!!
Why pick this over a top of the range Jolion or H6? I need help understanding that.
Plus Jolion comes with nice warranty
They will say it's about Resale value and whether Haval is reliable...
That's their own argument....
My Jolion super lux any day way cheaper and better than this
The top of the range should have had the 1.4tsi
I am almost 100% certain that the wipers are rain sensing / automatic. You need to set it at the intermittent setting. But with that being said, auto wipers or not, outrageously priced.
That is correct. You can set it to intermittent and the wipers will work automatically as soon as any water hits the windscreen. You can also set the sensitivity with a switch that indicates 4 drops from small to large situated above the lever for the wipers.
Taigo Dam beautiful car
This car reminds me of my grandfather‘s old 1970s VW Passat (B1)
They sell the “panoramic sunroof” for an substantial extra cost. When it’s in fact just a regular sunroof 🤷🏻♂️
We are a snobbish market group in SA & these car manufacturers, specifically VW, have noticed that & are exploiting the opportunity. We want to be associated with a brand name & once that association happens it's gets easier for a brand to charge what they like. You spec a Taigo (a jacked up hatchback) to this cost & it gets into the SUV segment - think Haval. But "we" are not ready for purchasing the latter because it's not a "brand name".
Great review but i have a M3 e92 DCT for sale 2009 for less than the base model of this with only 156 000km stock standard bearings done in white, Carbon Roof.
Interested to see m3
“Only” 156 000km 😂
For that price, there are wayyyy better cars out there.
And engines. 2jZ or Barra anyone?
Nice the VW small SUV segments have really improved there range of vehicles like T - ROC , T - CROSS , TAIGO as the demand of cross overs is increasing but you cant believe that the same new car prices have increased my T - Cross that was launched in South Africa in 2019 for the DSG comfortline was R334,600 has now rocketed to over R385,000.00 for the same car that is fifty to sixty thousand more so glad i purchased the car then value for money
Vw is just for those who love the brand, as for pricing you always get great deals at all its competitors
I don't know, a few weeks ago I'd have agreed with you, but now... 🤔🤔🤔. I've looked around and all cars seem to be expensive.
What would you get instead of this vehicle?
@@rljmofokeng at which price range are u looking at?
They should bring the saveiro to sa
"When you are selling too many car that the competition can't keep up just compete with yourself" VW
A top of the range Opel Mokka is tens of thousands cheaper than the Taigo in this video and comes with all the same spec. It’s just as good-looking and offers just as much. It’s very disappointing to see how expensive VW’s (and most cars in general) have become these days. It’s a great looking car and I’m sure it will sell simply based on the badge alone. But for R572k, there are other options that offer just as much (if not more) for less…
VW is no longer the wagon of the people, but only of the rich! VW have lost their purpose!
@@vontravel what car brand is ?? dont mention the chinese cause they will increase prices ina year or two.
@@TsotsiLife he said opel
Can't agree more. VW is overpriced and under speced. I've looked and it and I'd opt for the mokka or cx30
Personally I would take a Haval Jolion it's bigger has better standard specification. The selling point of the Haval is it's great warranty and service plan. Volkswagen products are very good but you're paying for the name. There's far better value elsewhere in the market.
Performance wise , this beats the Jolion by a mile. You would be sacrificing a good drive for a car thats pumped up with interior spec
I have a 2013 C-Class 200 CDi that had SIX years service maintenance and gives me 5.7 l/100 kms overall.
Why would I change?!
How's the maintenance on those diesel variants. I'm looking for one
these "extras" that are already included in the middle to top range Chery or Haval ?! so 486 k is for the engine and the badge!?!
looks nice Ciro...but im not sure if i'd buy a vw CROSS COUPE for half a million rand hey....!... why not jus go get a used Tiguan for that price with good milleage ...
Does Taigo have air conditioner for persons in bacseats?
What would you buy for R500K?
Good review 👍but Because they made a brand reputation years back, now people have to pay 500k+ For a 1L Vehicle. 😂. In todays world, people understands value for money... Gone are the days for just so called Brands
I hate that they package all of these as "extras" in the USA their different trim levels contain most of the different "extras". Things like the IQ drive should be standard on the higher trim. Same with autonomous braking which a safety feature that VW has in all their cars in the US, regardless of entry level models.
That said, you can't just say "oh it has the same engine and nothing really extra compared to the Polo" as far as I know the Polo hardly has the capability to have any of these extras like lane keep assist or autonomous braking, reverse camera etc.
R-line with no leather seats?
I like your videos before I can even watch them, 😂😂😂
That is great to hear :)
Man!! alles word net te expensive.
why is it that VW has the shortest car warranty yet their cars are very robust and they last forever.. i mean the citi golf is still a small business in the township?
The front looks like a Renault Clio
Thank you once again - Too little, too late VW.
Why do these manufacturers have these insane non negotiable options.
WOW 575k for a 1ltr. Car manufacturers really know how to do a number on consumers...
can you do an arteon video
Done! ua-cam.com/video/vo6CEGdbJHw/v-deo.html
Ouch...that price.
👍🏻
🤞🏾✌🏾
This new Dusters are very good and have good fuel consumption. All the extras are useless
VW is overpricing their cars into oblivion, seriously. No way I'm buying a R450k+ taigo that is so bland. For that price, Haval offers way more than what VW could put out. I'm buying the Haval h6 super lux instead.
Even Cherry Tiggo pro 8, it's a 7 seater and it's just under R550 000. I'll rather buy that instead of this VW's
Going Chinese from Volkswagen is like jumping from the pan into the fire. Get a Toyota. They're just as expensive, but at least you're getting a vehicle that can last long and have a good resale value.
We can't afford to complain about Toyota's being boring anymore. They're starting to make the most sense in today's difficult economic climate.
hahaaaa. now try and get any parts for your fongkong car after 7 years. penny wise pound foolish
@Siphiwe Mhlotshane Chery is a very excellent alternative to Haval. The tiggo pro 8 is a great suv
I think the value proposition is night and day. Nobody can compete with Havaal and Cherry. What VW have is brand equity. You dint build that overnight. And with this car being polo based, you know you can hang onto it forever and you'll never have to worry about parts in the long term. That hasn't been proven with Cherry or Havaal but that doesn't mean it won't be true for them. That being said, you can't blame people for sticking to what they know
I love VW but their cars are just ridiculously expensive nowadays
If you not seriously looking at HAVAL you are missing a trick!
Suburu is a much better buy full house for 610k and its a 4wd
Anything above 350k I am buying a Toyota hilux used 2.4D. #Reliability #Quality #FuelEfficiency
A new polo gti or a pre-owned golf gti (both of which are similarly priced) would be a better option.
You need to compare apples with apples mate. Not price with price. Tiago is an SUV coupe not a performance car
So what country are these from..?
Spain for the European and South African spec.
Brazil for the Latin American spec (where it’s called the Nivus).
R570k? isn't that Polo GTI money? I'd rather not.
