    Cher Horowitz is a stylish, good-natured, and popular teenager living in a Beverly Hills mansion with her wealthy father Mel, a gruff litigator; her mother died during a liposuction procedure when Cher was a baby. She attends Bronson Alcott High School with her best friend Dionne Davenport, who is also beautiful and from a wealthy family. Dionne has a long-term relationship with popular student Murray Duvall, though Cher believes Dionne should be dating more mature men.
    Josh Lucas, the socially conscious son of Mel's ex-wife of only a few weeks, visits Cher and her father during a break from college. She playfully mocks his idealism, while he teases her for her vanity and superficial lifestyle.
    After receiving a poor grade, Cher decides to orchestrate a romance between two teachers at her school, Miss Geist and the hard-grading Mr. Hall, so that Hall will relax his standards and allow Cher to renegotiate the grade. After seeing their newfound happiness, she realizes she enjoys doing good deeds.
    When a "clueless" transfer student named Tai Frasier arrives at the school, Cher decides to make her her next project. She gives her a makeover with the help of Dionne, providing Tai with confidence and a sense of style. Cher tries to extinguish the attraction between her and Travis Birkenstock, an amiable but clumsy skateboarding slacker, and instead steers Tai towards handsome, popular student Elton Tiscia.

    I absolutely loved this movie. 😂
    Also, a “friend of Dorothy” was a way other gay men can identify each other without saying they were gay back in the day. Dorothy as in Judy Garland from Wizard of Oz. Judy was a big supporter of the community.

      The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, in a report issued February 2010, said that the manner of death was accidental and that the cause of death was pneumonia, with secondary factors of severe iron-deficiency anemia and multiple drug intoxication.[11][122] The coroner found a range of over-the-counter and prescription medications in Murphy's system, with the most likely reason being to treat a cold or respiratory infection. These included "elevated levels" of hydrocodone which is a narcotic, acetaminophen, L-methamphetamine, and chlorpheniramine. Hydrocodone requires a prescription while the others are over the counter. The report observed: "the possible adverse physiological effects of elevated levels of these medications cannot be discounted, especially in her weakened state."[11]

    In the movie, Josh’s age is 18 years old just started college or did a semester or two while Cher was 16. So they are only 2 years apart, but in real life Paul was 26 and Alicia was 18 years old. Stacy Dash actually was older than Paul, she was 28!! Donald Faison was 21 years old and Brittany Murphy was 17 years old.

    The movie is based on Austen’s Emma, and relationship is between Emma and her sister’s husband (BIL)’s brother. So technically not related, and this is how they incorporated it into the movie, Josh and Cher are not related. The divorce was back when they were preteens lol

    Not sure if it is mentioned elsewhere in the comments, but "Clueless" is a modern adaptation of "Emma" by Jane Austen. The screenplay is widely accepted as amongst the best of all contemporary set adaptations of a classic work of literature. Another great example is "10 Things I Hate About You" with Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles (among many other great actors), also set in the 1990s, based on Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew."

    So what you’re saying is you need to cover Austen adaptations 😉
    Just saw a video that said Alicia Silverstone didn’t have the interest in fashion Cher has. Cher has 65 costume changes.
    This is a wonderfully clever modern adaptation of Emma. I am fond of both 1996 Emmas, (Gwyneth Paltrow-film, Kate Beckinsale-series) although unfortunately I must admit Gwyneth’s is a Miramax movie. 😞 I watched it hundreds of times before Weinstein was ever called out, so I’m just too attached to it. I bought it ages ago, and watch it for the amazing cast. In 1997, it introduced 13 year old me to our beloved Ewan McGregor, as Frank Churchill. The 2007 miniseries with Romola Garai is solid, although the tone isn’t exactly perfect in my opinion. It’s a bit too Victorian like. Queen Victoria comes to power in 1837. The regency era ends in 1820. Poor Jane Austen dies in 1817, at only 41, before 2 of her 6 best known books are even published. It is surmised that she died of Addison’s disease. Her tone is lighter and more ironic. Austen was like a screenwriter of her day. Novels were new mediums.
    I really like the 2020 one with Anna Taylor-Joy, but some complain over slight plot changes. They don’t bother me. And I discovered that the director apparently did some really extensive research on the look of the period, and it’s brighter than what we expect. Great cast too.

    • @IslesYankeeLady
      @IslesYankeeLady Місяць тому

      And if it isn’t evident, I have a zillion film/TV recommendations based on the other 5 of her works, too. All of them have been adapted at least twice that I am aware of, even Northanger Abbey.
      Oh- you want young Felicity Jones? Boom. She’s the lead in the 2007 Northanger Abbey. 90 min miniseries. Plot is a spoof of the female characters that existed in Gothic novels. Great cast in the series.

They had a touch screen for the cash register at the front door. We thought that was so cool and futuristic and would be everywhere in a couple of years. Nope. Didn't really see them again for a long time. Mostly the iphone in 2007 made it ubiquitous. At a disney worid restaurant around the same time, the waitress did have a touch screen pad like thing that sent the order straight to the kitchen. The interface though was rather basic on them from what I can remember.

      Thr age difference is totally fine. They respect and care about each other, and depending on where they live there are no legal issues either. Not assuming they will have sex while Cher is only 16 though. I can see Josh wanting to wait until she's older.
