Are You a Supertaster?

- Some people have more taste buds than the rest of us. They’re called supertasters, and they can taste things others can’t.

I can taste pizza that's good enough for me.
word
🤦🏻♀️
I dislike pizza too cheesy maybe idk

Nice Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Weniley Muffin Maticulous (search on google)? It is a great exclusive product for melting your muffin top fast without the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my close friend Aubrey after a lifetime of fighting got great results with it.👍😎
So is this why some people will avoid things described as "Too Sweet" and I will look at them like they're insane and love something like that? I must not be a super taster.
It is a completely different thing.People who hate too sweet thing are people who probably have their stop growing. So kids like sweets but not adult.
wai chen their "Bones" stop growing.
+TheAfroOfDoom many stawberries are sour... it really depends where you get them the once i had from my garden where much better than the once in the super market...
zchr strawberries that are sour are just not ripe enough yet.
+TheRaineMusic I wonder if I'm a medium taster of some kind. I HATE the taste of coffee. It's extremely bitter and grainy and gross and I have always had a very small sweet tooth. But I like broccoli and kale just fine.
My mom is a food taster and at one point she brought home and gave me one of those strips without telling me what it was - I about died gagging
We did this in class. I too am a supertaster
isabella patterson we did this in class me too :DDD im a super taster. i fight those who are bad. not those who are good. you are good.
isabella patterson im just a medium taster ;(
I accidentally swallowed it. Needless to say, it was not a pleasant experience.
It tasted like soap and shampoo and fucking battery acid
Frozen CheezWiz How do you get battery acid?
Did anyone read the title as: "Are you a Superstar?"
Yeah. lol.
silent66556 Yes. Do you have a fetish for naked men or something?
AfterWind yes lol
AfterWind I read it as "Are you a supertaser?" and thought "wut?"
I did..
Yeah, I remember this shit. My high school biology teacher decided it would be funny to tell us about these cool little strips that tasted like cotton candy and pass one out to everyone in the class (we had a small class). Then you just hear a bunch of people say it doesn't taste like anything. One second later, a group of people including myself taste it. We didn't trust anything he said for the rest of the year.
ur teacher is G
that's evil... and hilarious.
SCIENCE!@!!
Lmaooo
Same thing happened to me! I’ll never forget it.
Why are DuPont workers licking explosions?
+ljmasternoob Licking? More like "it exploded and now it's all over me; good thing I had a lab coat, gloves, and goggles on, but sucks I didn't have a face mask."
+ljmasternoob The chemical landed on their tongues as they inhaled it in.
***** Well, they heard the myth about "explosive taste that will blow their minds" and tried to confirm it. Long story short, they were disappointed but hey, at least they aided science by pure accident! :D #Kappa

Vaping on the job? Is that allowed?
Of course it would be Hank
i remember doing a similar thing to this in biology once. some people were rinsing their mouths out and trying not to throw up while others looked around confused wondering what all the fuss was about.
We got to try this in my genetics class. Tasted so awful
5 years ago wow
7 years ago wow
8 years ago wow
Haha, we did this in my Bio class. The teacher said, "if you taste it, you'll know." There was a good few moments' delay, so I thought I was safe. While I (along with half the class) screamed in agony, my friend looked at me like I had three heads. It was HORRIBLE. These guys make it seem so tame, people were tearing up and dry heaving in my class. Never again. 😂
In my freshman year at uni, our bio 101 class did this experiment. We each tasted the PTC-paper, then based on what we tasted, predicted whether we were supertasters or not. Then we ran a DNA fingerprint of ourselves and compared it to our predictions. I thought I was a supertaster because it was really bitter to me; turns out that genetically, I'm actually a medium taster. I just don't like bitter flavors XD
I did this in my Bio class and it turns out I'm a supertaster. And I like vegetables and ice cream and coffee and tons of other tasty things. And my friend who doesn't eat vegetables cuz he hates them is not a supertaster or a a semi super or whatever it's called. So I guess just because someone's picky as hell, it does not make them a supertaster. Also someone can be a supertaster and not be picky as hell.
5 years... so how’s life?
@@lemonpie3218 Haha, its always funny getting replies to comments I made years ago, but yours is the first one that is self aware of that. Life is good, I'm about to move into an apartment with my partner and couldn't be more excited.
@@zomBgone99 glad to hear: )
yeah whenever some people bring up super tasters im like yeah of course coffee is really botter and brocolli doesnt taste all the great but like i still eat it and dont spit it out. They seem to forget that bitter isnt always and inherently bad taste people always dont like. Evolutionary yeah we are generally programmed not to like it so as to not poison ourselves but that tends to go away as you get older. Im sure some super tasters would taste intensely bitter or sweet things and still like it.
What about super smellers. I can smell lots of things that other people say they can't smell.
Yo butt stinks
Makes sense, because smell and taste of linked; that's why when your head is stuffed up with a cold, you can't taste food. You need oxygen in your nose to taste from your mouth, I suppose. I'm a super taster, and my sense of smell is also great, and I can differentiate and recognize a lot of smells compared to most of my friends and co-workers.
I get nauseous with the smell and taste of roast meats and airplane food
Like wolverine
Yes me too!!! It’s a curse. Seriously I’m constantly smelling things my family can’t.
I'm going to assume that 80% of people will "say" it tastes bitter and crazy, so they can feel like they're "a supertaster".
Just like high pitch noises, I play some - and everyone says yes, then I pretend to play the highest pitch, the few idiots that want to be special say "omg I can hear that, you can't? Its so annoying!"
Yet the honest people that can accept they're not "super" so "nope."
sacr3 That's why when they give the test, they don't tell you what it will taste like. Our biology teacher just handed out the strips and said to stick them on our tongue. We very quickly figured out who was and wasn't.
sacr3 I feel 'supertaster' is a bit of a misnomer. I can tell you it is a curse and not a blessing. Can't stand the taste of beer and wine so my bar tab is usually double or triple what everyone else paid because the only thing I can drink are cocktails or some super sweet malt beer which I don't usually drink because I try to avoid sugars. Plus it's harder to get vegetables in your diet unless you're comfortable eating stuff that just doesn't taste 'good' at all. it's actually very annoying.
+sacr3 It may not be them being idiots or show-offs (although its very possible). There's this thing called the nocebo affect, where you can feel things that *actually* aren't there (as opposed to something different which would be the placebo effect). This may be because I have tinnitius, but when someone says they hear a really high-frequency noise, I hear one too.
+heather23renae Yeah it's a pain, getting vegetables in my diet is impossible. Everyone thinks I'm just being a big baby but eating most vegetables is just disgusting and makes me want to vomit. I swore my whole life that I was tasting something they weren't and told everyone my taste was sensitive, they never believed me. Then I confirmed it when I found out this was a real thing.
Yea all i'm seeing here are excuses not to eat vegetables.
I don't know many people that like the taste of vegetables, they have no fat, no calories and thats exactly what our bodies crave and enjoy tasting. I don't mind vegetables, I typically eat them with my meals.
But I know a lot of kids that bitch and moan that it tastes "awful"... I mean a LOT of people do this.
So does this mean you're a supertaster? lol no c'mon, you're just part of the what, 70% of fricken people that hate veggies.
All of the sudden, everybody on the comments section is a super-taster :^)
Adrian Fahrenheit probably because most people who research these videos have already made that determination in one way or another
+Adrian Fahrenheit Under normal circumstances,me being a supertaster would be something worth commenting for me.
Otherwise,I'm unlikely to post one.But that is just me.Also,I don't have those testing strips so I can't tell.
That’s selection bias
Mine is a medication side effect
Does being a supertaster contribute to being a picky eater?
in most cases yes, in others its more texture based than taste.
I was wondering that too since my son is picky and hates certain foods.
I am a picky eater >:D I knew i wasn't crazy!
ivanhowar I have tried this test and I find it horribly bitter. It was terrible. I am also extremely picky with the foods I eat. So add me to your sample of people who are super tasters as well as picky eaters.
+ivanhowar It can cause a person to go either way. Some super tasters just aren't allowed the time to develop a liking (acquire a taste) for things by parents or guardians who just don't understand. Others who are able to either get around the tastes faster or are given a chance to explore the flavor at their own pace can go full force into foods no matter how weird or strange. The majority of the best chefs in the world fall into the super taster category. I guarantee that if you know someone that's seriously passionate about unique foods, they're a super taster.
I don't know how well my dad tastes, but he seems to prefer mellow flavors and simple foods like me. But my mom and my sister have driven the food selection in my household while growing up, and I know from experience and testing that I'm in the super taster category and they are not. I was the only one causing trouble at the dinner table because I certainly didn't know I was tasting more than they were, my dad will eat anything you put in front of him and my mom and my sister insist certain flavors are light or non-existent and I can taste things in that make me physically nauseous just to get a smell of.
There are kids and adults who just want to be trouble about anything, they'll be causing trouble at more than the dinner table if you want to spot them. If a parent pays enough attention they can usually solve the problem by backing off on the spice, simplifying the foods and increasing the amounts of the troubling food over time. That's typically how I ease myself into new foods or spices I don't like at first just so I can enjoy a nice variety of vegetables in my day. If that still doesn't work for a parent to get a kid to eat, there might be something else wrong that is not related to the food itself.
Where do they sell these papers
Just like everything else, amazon.com. I found things like 100 PTC test strips for $7 there.
Gerald Dokka I think I don't need them after all I checked the list of foods supertasters usually dislike and I like pretty much all of them so I think I'm not a supertaster lol xD
+iNezumi I dislike about every food on that list, Except coffee. Weird.
Flintstoned I hate carbonated water, and maybe aren't a huge fan of heavy, tart red wine. And kale tastes kinda weird but I tried it only once so it may be that I'm not used to it. But i really like broccoli and other foods on the list so.
I wish I knew about this as a kid. My mom always made me eat that stuff......ah hell, she probably still would have made me eat it.
I did hate the taste of coffee for a long time, but really loved the smell. I think I just forced myself to like it, now I can't live without it lol.
I love that Hank is the only super taster and is also the only one who stuck the whole thing in his mouth.
"Kaan eat your broccoli!"
"I can't mom I'm a supertaster"
My new excuse...
Bull
So we did this in science and I apparently react very strongly. Punch line, I swallowed the paper and spent the rest of the day with the back of my tongue tasting like satans armpit.
I can't stand the taste of coffee
even people's breathe after they drink coffee stinks
ikr i cant even be near starbucks because when someone opens the door a gust of coffee smell hits me
TheSUPERHAPPY1 I guess when you're old, caffeine is life.
+Dani Omo I love the smell but i hate the taste ...
Everyone's breath stinks after coffee, that's a known thing.
Fucking druggies. Caffeine: not even once.

Interesting information.
Indeed
Had to look it up having never heard of Umami. A video just on the five flavors and the history of the idea would be interesting
It.... is rather funny that this video shows up as I looked up this very subject only a day before it was released.
I can taste Doritos by just waving my tongue around in the air near them. My friends think I'm crazy but I never run out of Doritos.
😂😂
I'm a supertaster, but broccoli tastes pretty good. It's bitter, but it's a good bitter. Something like Arugula though... unbearable. Also tend to avoid sweet stuff.
Broccoli sucks
My shirt sucks right now i once put my shirt up in kindergarten and they Laughed lol but i regret it now i had some personal abs xd
AlleyBetwixt same, broccoli is fine but there’s a reason I despise coffee
@@markfrancis707 Broccoli is fine... as long as it's with cheese. The creamy offsets the bitter and it tastes pretty good :)
tomatoes suck
Hmmmmm. This is fascinating and may explain some things.
The only "odd" tastes that I have which differs greatly between my friends, family and I, are:
• I don't particularly care for the taste of coffee (I only drink it if I'm super desperate for energy). That bitterness is almost intolerable to my buds. It just tastes like NO.
• I love vegetables, but I hate the taste of cucumbers. It tastes like a watery-metallic blend of some kind. Cucumbers taste awful, but smell terrific!
• I feel overwhelmed when I eat a whole olive (as tiny as it is). It's a flavor overload and it's too much. I can eat it when it's sliced into smaller pieces.
• After many years of avoiding it, I can now comfortably eat cheesecake. It used to -- and still does -- have this odd peppery taste to each bite. It's not like a burning sensation, like that from a jalapeno. It's more of a gentle sting to my taste buds; like black pepper.
• I recently fell in love with raw kale. It has this underlying buttery taste to it. However, I seem to be the only one who can taste it amongst my group of friends. I think raw, baked broccoli tastes buttery, as well.
I did this test when I was in sixth grade back in 2006. That was the start of a long journey, learning that I am painfully average.
Well, I grew up with an inability to smell that I just didn't think of. When it came to my mother's attention it was found it that it was caused by an allergy, which was previously believed to be linked to my eyes, which would hurt horrendously during summer times. When I started on my medication I found out that the sentsation of smell was the same as the sentsation of taste to me, which is obviously different from everyone else. I have also used my tongue for smelling the air a few times just for the fuck of it, not that it has any practical use that is. It is rather interesting how the body adapts to its conditions during its development.
i did this in genetics at uni, turns out i am a super taster, as both my parents are, but i didn't think it was all that bad a taste
I really don't like ice cream, but I do love veggies...bring on the bitter chemical decider
I am really enjoying re-watching the Vlogbrothers "Hungry Games" videos knowing that Hank is a super taster. 😂
Coffee is acid, what? Coffee is bitter as fuck.
***** coffee can have an acidic after taste
***** Oh duuuuuuuuddddeeeee! Heeeyy, a fello... a fellow acid dropper...
Gabriel Tzukishiro I suppose I misspoke. I taste nothing but bitter in coffee. I love sour foods in general, and can't stand anything bitter. Perhaps that's why. The point is, I was very surprised to hear that people call coffee sour (acidic).
+UnashamedlyHentai Are you talking about black coffee specifically? If you are I too find it to taste bitter. I will never have my coffee without sugar.
+UnashamedlyHentai acid doesn't mean sour, it's referring to the pH
This comment section makes me feel like non-supertasters like me are in the minority
I am. Took the test 20 years ago in bio 151. Was told it was caffeine. I was a milk taster for our state fair for 5 yrs, and I still participate in some tasting social groups from time to time. The worst for me is liquor and red wine, followed by the more intense green vegetables. Hoppy beers are killer! In a bad way!
JOHN LEE SUPERTASTER
TASTES MORE THAN WE DO
EVERYTHING HAS A FLAVOR
SOME FLAVORS ARE TOOOOOOO MUCH
Am I the only one that thinks wasabi isn't spicy but it just tastes awful and makes me gag
XShadowshot When I had it, it wasnt spicy at all but tasted horrible as well. ;-;
XShadowshot There's a huge difference in quality between wasabi. In my experience the wasabi in store-bought sushi fits your description: not spicy at all and the taste ranges from "ok" to "aww hell no!". I love the wasabi I get when buying it fresh though - tastes way different. I don't think I've ever had "real" or "proper" wasabi though, which is supposed to taste even more mild, nuanced and fragrant.
Gabriel Tzukishiro Ah, thanks! Didn't know it was that expensive. As for eating wasabi - and only wasabi - I mean... What? Really? Guys, quick PSA here: Wasabi ain't Nutella. Moderation and combination are key here folks. =S
+Gabriel Tzukishiro there's a lot of things in japan, most obvious example their most beloved food item: soy sauce, they just like things that won't work being eaten by themselves...
XShadowshot www.pepperpalace.com/Nasal-Napalm-p/q29.htm
I remember doing the PTC paper test in middle school and I could taste the bitter, but I enjoy coffee and green veggies, even tea which, for the longest time, I hated the taste of. I guess I'm in the middle.
+Ganaram Inukshuk well, just because you feel it it doesn't mean you won't like it, normally supertasters dislike it because normal people normally don't even taste how damn bad coffee taste(even though they can see it has a strong taste compared to other things) and given that bitterness is generally the least liked flavor out of all, it's normal that the majority of supertasters would hate coffee.
in fact, i hate anything bitter and most sour things, can't stand coffe, any type of alcohol(except sweets rhum), medicine, dr.pepper, aperitives,etc... and one thing that makes me understand i'm a supertaster even without doing the test, is that in my whoole family, i'm the only one that can clearly detect food has gone or is going bad just by taste alone.
+iota-09 your self diagnosis might be wrong. test it to be sure
Danny F meh, don't care, as long as i can taste stuff others don't i'm fine, it's just bad when people say "no that's not gone bad, it's all in your mind" then proceed to force feed me and i get stomach ache...
+Ganaram Inukshuk I think it's just the generalization that people usually hate bitter foods. Maybe you just like bitter foods.
+iota-09 coffee is one of the most disgusting things i have ever tasted... i prefer tea!
I'm not gonna lie Hank's face at 0:24 is the reason i'm finally supporting on Patreon
I can notice differences in taste so much more accurately than anyone I know. It has made me very picky, and I hate it. People always assume I choose to be picky, which makes no sense. I also cannot stand frosting. I can't even eat cake with it without gagging from how sweet it is. And don't get me started on vegetables! Like grass! Bitter and nasty!
Did anyone else think the title said "superstar"?
Mordecai626 no lol but everyone else seemed too.... I'm a "Super-Seer" 😎
I did the PTC paper test in school and about half the class went running to spit it out. Really, its nothing too special. And actually not too beneficial for someone like me whose diet omits meat.
***** I'm a supertaster and a vegetarian. Broccoli doesn't bother me but spinach and kale do. Honestly, most vegetables aren't that bitter, and if they are, cooking them seems to get rid of the taste so it wouldn't really affect you either way.
***** Half of the population aren't super tasters. Some estimate was 7%.
Ville Nummisalo That's why you don't do convenience samples. Where half their class was, only about a third of mine was. They just happened to have a lot of supertasters in their class.
My diet is only meat and bones. Probably have a lot to do with this because I can't stand/eat anything else.
+Ville Nummisalo Well then it may be statistically improbable that about (not exactly) half ran to spit it out, but definitely not impossible.
Amazing one !
This explains so much in my life.
I have never liked the taste of beer. I've just never been able to enjoy it, no matter how much I've had. Since beer has a distinctly bitter taste to it, could it be that I am overly sensitive due to the fact that I'm a supertaster?
Nick Joslin I feel you man, I have the exact same Problem.
It might just be you don't like the taste of alcohol!
Nope.I can drink other things with alcohol without a Problem. Its just that stupid bitter taste of beer. It makes me wanna puke.
1HP There is lots of different beer with drastically different flavors m8.
+Nick Joslin There are sweet tasting beers too.
The last thumbnails have looked slightly odd...
Thank you for validating my life.

On the contrary. If you are a super taster. You might be a prime candidate for collaboration for espresso and tasting wines. There are fine notes in these type of drinks that most people can’t taste. Eating too much refined sugar fries your tastebuds anyways
I've done that before in my wine class. I'm a regular taster. We had a lot of super tasters and a few non-tasters. The non-tasters had a really hard time in that class. One guy failed it 3 times.
A teacher gave these to our class in ninth grade. She didn't warn us what it would be like, she just said some people would be able to taste it and some wouldn't.
Most people (myself included) thought it tasted really awful. Only two or three people didn't taste anything.
This one was so cool :))
Oh man, Hank's reaction was too damn funny.
#1 Science show on UA-cam August, 2015
When I drink lemon and lime juice,it equals this :SO FLIPPEN SOUR! Broccoli: OMG TOO SWEET
Hank is always the special one ;)
I had this PTC test once in a class at the university. I felt the strong bitter taste.
But I love coffe, dark chocolate and vegetables.
If Hank is a supertaster,John must be a supertaster too.
I believe I'm a medium taster. But just to be sure, where do I get these PTC strips?
Is there anywhere to buy those test strips in quantities fewer than 100? I'd like to try it, but I'm just one person. I just need one. There isn't like a Missoula Chemical Supply store around here is there?
I am an extremely sensitive supertaster in the context of this video. PTC, canned air, cigarette smoke from as far as 50ft outdoors (or even further if I'm directly downwind) all trigger basically the same reaction that Hank displayed; however I really love raw broccoli, spinach, and most green vegetables (or cooked). Raw spinach was an especially odd experience when I realized I liked it because it tastes extremely faintly of banana.
This sounds like a curse, more than a blessing.
I love broccoli and brussel sprouts and basically every vegetable ever. I don’t think I can be qualified as a supertaster. Well, at least I eat a lot of vegetables so there’s that..
i did all of the tests previously just, and i'm an odd man for while I classify as a supertaster i still enjoy the things most others don't, bitter strong coffee/tea, brussel sprouts, etc. pretty much anything other than super sweet things I enjoy tasting the full and more nuanced flavors of things.
I can't stand the taste of broccoli and Brussel sprouts! I thought it was just me being weird. Thanks for this episode, SciShow, very educational :).
Poor Hank LOL
I did my science fair project on this two years ago!
*watches "we love science" Hank commercial before a SciShow video*
Definitely at least a medium taster, I've got a palette for bitter and anything sweeter than semi sweet chocolate is way too overwhelming to taste good.
COOOOOOOL
What is the easiest way to get PTC coated paper?? do you just spray PTC on it? where can you get it?
Both my parents are supertasters so, I love it.
Also I hate it why my foods do you all taste like grossness.
Those papers always did taste absolutely horrible. Now I know why :D Very interesting video!
Thanks, now I know why I only can take one little bit of chocolate and even that is often too much for me xD
Beer, coffee, kale, chocolate...licorice. everything tastes so strong, and smells are so smelly!
My friends and family always teased me about being so picky even though the food is so good but ever since we found out I was a super taster they stopped lol
In 7th grade we did a project where we had to taste the paper with ptc and so did our families. Our teacher wasn't a taster and we complained that he couldn't do that to us!
Where can I buy that flavored paper and test it out?
Super taster here!
Wasabi coated peas are my kryptonite! Just 1 lick ,It'll start hell fire..
SUPERTASTER MASTER RACE!
We did this experiment in my first year of university with PTC solutions of different concentrations. I must have gotten two alleles from my parents because I could taste the PTC even at the lowest concentration.
Can confirm. It's one of the WORST tasting things. I did the test in college and had to leave to get water or something to remove the taste. Not even a soda helped. But this explains sugar and coffee taste sensitivity. Lol.
I like coffee but people look at me weird when I drink it because I have to load it down with sugar to over come the bitterness.
I remember in school this test… very, very bitter. Argh. But sensory analysis for the basics tastes, the bitter one is the worst. Pure caffeine solution is not good at all… yikes.
We did this in my science class and I was the only one to react like hank and everyone thought I was weird
I'm glad you didn't confuse PTC with TCP. That would be a whole different kind of video.
Good old DuPont... innovating and having Chemical spills for over two centuries. :)
I still want Scishow to explain Deja Vu; specifically where you can have a deja vu dream and then (insert time amount here from hours to months) it actually happens exactly as you saw it.
FUNGIFORM IS MY NEW FAVOURITE WORD
I used to describe myself as a super taster, though I never had it confirmed. Couldn't eat fish, didn't like cabbage and the like, still can't cope with the taste of peppers (they also make me sick, but that's another matter). But as I've gotten older all flavours have gotten milder for me.
did anyone else notice that: "thanks for asking and thanks to all our patreons on patreon who keep this ?!ANSWERS!? coming"
I thought the title said "are you a SUPERSTAR" lol 😂
That's actually a "superhuman" ability i don't want.
Oh gods. My Science teacher in gr.12 pull the PTC paper on us all. None of us knew what we were really in for even if he said that it would taste bitter to some of us. Nope. Complete understatement. I had to run to the sink that was in the science Lab to wash my mouth out it was so bad. Half my class was right behind me.
Super taster in the house!
