      @TheLisab56 You nailed it. One characteristic of Peter throughout all his tribulations was his humility. He ALWAYS gave the other players more than he gave himself. He would not have been happy to hear the appelation 'Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac'. He was the star when the group was formed. He was The Green God yet he named his group after his rhythm section which would become one of the most important rhythm sections in rock music long after Peter was out of the game. I'm not sure this kindness was ever fully repaid.

    Another great analysis Fil! Amazing to realize he was only 19 when he joined John Mayall, and only 23 when he left FM. Also incredible to think he not only let a completely unknown teenage hanger-on into his band (Danny Kirwan) but allowed him to share center stage... Nice to hear the tributes from Mick and Stevie, they all owe their careers to Peter Green. What a strange, generous, wonderful man and brilliant musician.

    Peter gave his guitar soul, and when he played for his audience, he shared that soul with them. He had the touch of an angel on the fretboard.

    I have been a big fan of Peter Green since his Mayall days- his tone and touch are intangibles - as a guitarist, I found his notes to be relatively easy to figure out but his phrasing and feel were unmatched. I grew up in Long Island,NY and when Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown came here to establish themselves in the late 60's , they played small bar venues at the time to make money for a short while- shoot ahead to 2003 at BBKings in NYC and at the last minute I hopped a train in and got the last seat available at the stage- The Splinter group shared the bill with Mayall- after the show they came out from the back and Peter locked eyes with me walked directly over and shook my hand- must have sensed how much I admired him-

    Just a week ago.. we were having memories, and now, I have even more. I love this song and this version. Honestly it makes me tear up. Lots of his songs do that, knowing what he might have been feeling and thinking. He survived all that bad stuff, and his music will live on. Thanks for helping that happen Fil. Peter was full of love and sadness, but he never stopped loving his guitars. I am so glad the Splinter Group happened. Peter is free now. Play on brother. A Man of the World. ......................

      There are, in effect, two completely different Fleetwood Macs. Both very good and successful - but to compare the two serves no useful purpose. I like them both. @@BoingBB I'd argue that there were at least 4 Fleetwood Macs , the blue original, the transitional one where Danny's style began to dominate starting when Dragonfly was released, which started the shift to the later Fleetwood, the Bob Welch era and the more pop Buckingham/Nicks era most people know. You cold also argue that there was another between the Welch and Buckingham phases

    • @BoingBB
      @BoingBB 4 роки тому

      @@knawl I don't count the odd personnel change as being a new band. The change between the 'bluesy' FM and the more commercial pop music band was chalk & cheese. After Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer left, Mick Fleetwood decided a change of direction (and a move to America) was the best thing to do. It worked but of course they have/had different fans. I can't offhand think of another group who made such a drastic change and achieved a second success, playing in a totally different style.

    • @knawl
      @knawl 4 роки тому

      @@BoingBB Danny didn't leave for a few albums after Peter left and if you listen to the songs he wrote, he was a major influence for the band's shift in sound and the Welch era was a lot different than after Buckingham joined so the difference was much more than personell shifts although those shifts did impact the sound, just as Peter's exit did. If the only difference you recognize is the change from blues to pop then I see your point but they made a few drastic style change steps after the transition from blues, though it was in the pop vein

    • @BoingBB
      @BoingBB 4 роки тому

    R.I.P. Peter Green. Another hero gone. Happily I saw Peter and 'friends' play a sideshow when he was here in Oz about 10 years ago on the Bluesfest bill. He barely engaged with the audience in that intimate room, leaving that to his front man, and although the "Albatross" served that night was electric, Peter's delivery of one of his signature tunes chilled me to the core and filled me with warmth, all in the space of a couple of minutes. Eerily brilliant. As you said, and like so many great players, much of the magic lies in what is left unplayed. That night is another treasured memory for me, thanks to Peter... Thank you for this little tribute to this kind spirit and simply phenomenal guitar player who was Peter Green. I enjoyed your explanation of phrasing, quite helpful for someone like me.
    I feel a bit silly for feeling sad about the death of someone I never met, but in recent years PG became my favourite guitar player alive. Very, very few instrumentalists could make me weep merely with their playing. Peter produced a number of solo's, that would do exactly that to me. He would suck you in, make you savour every note, listen to the story his Les Paul was telling. Then he would make you crave for the next plot twist, the next revelation; and when that little pause was over, he would make you feel exactly the way he wanted you to feel.
    Such a loss.

    I am old enough, and lucky enough to have seen Peter Green playing live on several occasions. The first time was a gig with John Mayall when Peter had recently replaced Eric Clapton in the Bluesbreakers, just before the Hard Road album was released. The next time I saw Peter play was September 1968 not long after he had formed Fleetwood Mac. What made that evening significant was it was Danny Kirwan's debut with the band. Sadly Danny has also recently left us. I saw the original Fleetwood Mac perhaps three or four times before Peter quit, having become disillusioned and the early onset of his mental illness. It was to be forty years before I saw Peter play live again. Along with his Splinter Group he played a gig at a small venue in Milton Keynes in March 2010. Knowing about his health problems over the years, myself and a couple of mates waited with bated breath to see how Peter would perform. Well, he didn't do any vocals but his guitar playing was spellbinding, it was if his troubled times had never existed. It was BB King who said "Peter Green has the sweetest tone I've ever heard, that man gives me the sweats". That says it all really. Apparently he was quite happy during his later years, he was married to a lovely Swedish lady, and spent most of his days indulging in his favourite pastime fishing. By the way, Peter released a long deleted album in 1979 called "In The Skies" which is well worth seeking out.

    Love hearing this kind of mellow playing. As usual you find the best things to point out in folks playing. I did a quick search on you channel, and wonder if you ever did a video on Emily Remler. She was a jazz guitarist who died back in 1990 at the age of 30. You can see her on her video Blues for Herb.

    May he RIP, Peter Green along w/the original British Fleetwood Mac made such a tremendous influence on Blues of that the time. I was very fortunate to see the original group live at the Hollywood Ca. Whiskey-A-Go-Go, back in 1969 & became a big fan of all their music & I own a large collection of their CD's.
    I was also very lucky to see Peter w/the Splinter Group in Seattle, Wa. in about 2001.
    He definitely was a "Man Of The World", he will be missed !

    What a remarkably sensitive player we had in Peter Green. When I think of "that feel", there is no other more sublimely soulful player. What a gift to we who listen and play; may he rest in peace while his spirit lives beyond our earthly loss.

    My dream of meeting Peter was fulfilled completely by accident. I only shared one encounter that lasted all evening without a guitar in sight. I found him to be a very shy and self conscious man. Very apologetic (without needing to be).
    What he loved most that evening was my chicken sandwiches.
    Most musicians dream and center their conversation on their pursuit of stardom. Peter was the opposite he centered his conversation on being ordinary and non conceited.
    It was like talking to your dad while he was fixing your bike.
    Half attentive but not missing what you said and then pausing to think and then answering you.
    RIP Peter your best best friend will always be along side of you in my thoughts because without her you would never have recovered.

    Where do you start with this. Quite literally, the first albums I ever bought were Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits and Then Play On. His guitar playing, song writing and his VOICE were astonishing. It’s only in recent years, I understood the quality of Danny Kirwan’s work. You can hear Peter at the top of his powers on I’ve Got A Mind To Give Up Living & then it seemed he wanted to give up a lot of what he did on that to Danny & he was happy to take a back step to a degree. But still on, Closing My Eyes just breaks your heart and is a precursor to Man of The World. Almost like Brian Wilson, when he came back, it seems like he had lost most of his playing and singing powers, but was still had perfect pitch within his diminished abilities. From what I’ve read, the sadness that I felt was offset by the fact that he was just happy away from the spotlight and fishing. He meant so much to me and, frankly it’s Friday and I’ve been drinking. I suppose we have to understand that genius is fleeting, whether it’s Peter or Einstein. Fil, you were very sympathetic and empathetic & another great analysis. There’s just not enough of Peter..or Danny.

    I just realized that music is a launguage, wow! All i can say is some things are meant to be and some things are not. I have learned so much from your channel. I admire your musical intelligence. Sometimes in life you can look back and understand just why the grand plan of your life was all about, the good, bad, and ugly without even understanding how music conveys a purpose whether a musician or a listener.
