I like that "Game of Thrones" and "The Walking Dead" shows both added some divergences from their source material. I am sure it would be fantastic to have a 100% accurate translation in the adaptations and I would still probably watch them. Though, it wouldn't be as exciting and interesting to those, like myself, who've read the books. They both still hit the main beats but are different enough as to take a slightly different path to get there. Yara's scene at the end of season 3 put both Theon and herself into an unpredictable position. So, I have a pretty good inkling of where the majority of the characters are going in season 4. But now there is a story arch that is mostly unspoiled. I wanna see if they do the whole "King's/Queen's Moot" and if Balon Greyjoy has any brothers fishing around in The Doom. If Ser Brom of the Blackwater is a better left handed sword trainer, than ole Ser Ilyn Payne. I wonder if Reek will forget he's a eunuch and that Yara is his sister,... again. I wonder if he will try to flop his balls into the hole right below her penis. Cause you know Yara has one. That's what Theon was feeling up on horseback when they were reunited. It's just that she tells everyone that part of her anatomy is an overtly elongated clitorus.(Good luck scrubbing that mental image out of your mind tonight. Your nightmares are on me tonight!) I do honestly think Gemma is really cute, but the way they do her up on the show makes me uncomfortable. It's like she's a guy cross dressing as a girl who's cross dressing as a guy. I'm most confused about the fact that I still want to make out with her in her armor. I would make her initiate intercourse by yelling,"RELEASE THE KRAKEN!" She would then by disappointed... twice.
this is the point of adaptation that some people don't get , i will not watch a fucking show that I already read and know what gonna happen , its good that they go off road sometimes as long they stick to the main point of the story
I didn't mean that to be taken the wrong way btw. She IS beautiful but in a different way from the other girls. And what I'm trying to say is they should show a wide variety of looks on the show.
Great actress, and none of this bozos who critizise her can even act a little monologue in front of a mirror. Seriously, grow up boys, it's not about how you look like, it's about your talent. And I'll take talent over looks ANYTIME. Besides, I'd hit that.
Jan Gilbert: "Now if you had to get the chop on the show, how would you like to go?" Gemma Whelan: "Ooh, I think she'd go by axe, wouldn't she? Some sort of axe disaster...something epic with an axe." Me: "Uhhh...uh oh. Doesn't Euron have an axe?" o_O Don't die, Yara. :-(
Oh, I don't think that it was a bad descision. I just wanted to point out that increasing the apparent (and IC) age of the characters has been done pretty much all over and to all characters, including the Lannister twins and the Baratheon brothers.
Her looks aren't all that important, but I will never understand the name change. It's Asha dammit! I remember seeing a clip of George talking about why names are important in fiction.
Come on people do you really think they can find actors that look exactly like the characters in the books!? I mean it would be great but It almost never happens that they can find actors that look like the characters described in the book(s)...
Well, most of the Starks and of course Dany go through really explicit stuff. So they had to age the characters a couple years just to not frighten people and make it kind of morally... better? :L
Aren't all of the Stark guys, even Eddard, far too old when compared to the first book? And I don't mean only as actors but also the characters they play in the tv show, as a deliberate choice by the directors. I still love the show though, although seeing it before reading the boocks may have a part in that.
She's cute! And I'm glad she isn't too 'hot'. There are too many hot girls on the show already and it can be distracting. Not everyone in the world is beautiful and some of them need to be a bit plainer to make the hot ones hotter.
Ghastly changes? Dude. This show has been fantastic in terms of bringing the series to life onscreen accurately. Some things have to be changed to put on film or to simplify things so viewers don't have too many characters to track. Asha's name change so she wasn't confused with Osha is hardly a ghastly change. It's a small one. And probably a good one as well. I think killing Robb's wife may prove unwise given the direction the books may possibly go, but then with GRRM advising I'm sure it was resolved far before that episode came out.
Also, a huge change I wish was not necessary was the reveal that the old man accompanying Dany was in fact Barristan Selmy. BUT I understand that it was not possible to put that on screen effectively, since we, the viewers, would recognize him immediately.
Chad Furlong I just wish Robb would have married Jeyne because he married her out of honour since he made the mistake of bedding a virgin. This lead to his death, just like his father before him. This is interesting and less people would call him an idiot than if he married a random field medic out of 'love'.
Ruxandra TheEmpress Yes. Jeyne Westerling is a far better character than Talisa. And it is more in line with his own character to marry her out of honor. Just like his father. On a side note Ned is not Jon's father!
I wasn't impressed with a lot of the casting in season 2, minus davos, stannis, and king balon. The tyrell girl and the fire goddess were too old for their roles, and asha didn't have the right look either. Casting for season 1 was very good though. Hopefully season 3 doesn't disappoint.
for anyone still complaing, bitching and crying about her name being Yara - they did that because Asha is to close to Arya. another first world problem solved? haha unreal.
That is a very weird reason, maybe you got it the wrong way round, maybe they said they decided to change her name to Yara so that it sounds like Arya. But why the hell would they want to do that, very strange, they should have stayed true to the book with this.
Asha was supposed to ooze sexuality, not necessarily in her looks but in her swagger and charisma. This is almost immediately established. No offence to Gemma but her portrayal is just dull and frumpy. There's nothing striking about her.
She's got one of the prettiest smiles I've ever seen!
when she smiles my heart melts
A VERY charming and gracious lady!
shes a great actress and character i cant wait to see more of her in season 4.
She's amazing.
She seems so nice!
These interviews are magnificent; I hope there's plenty more to come!
She does the character justice. Love the Greyjoys!
I love her! So cute. Can't wait to see her tale unfold in future seasons.
her. smile. !!!!!
Gemma is brilliant as Yara Greyjoy!
Gemma = Beautiful + talent + Inteligent Lady. From a Brazilian admirer Whelan!
Rather a sophisticated young lady, hopefully we'll see more of her.
I barely recognized her. Awesome makeup or distraction

she sounds so intelligent and ofc SLFG...
What a great gal.
Thank you for all these GoT interviews! :)
Thanks for the upload.
I love her amulet!
Yup, this looks more like the hairstyle I thought of when I read the books. :)
I just refuse to call her anything but Asha...
Love Gemma, she's so funny and cool
It's funny she's so plain in the show but irl she's actually adorable
Her name is Yara in the show for the Osha - Asha problems that might appear since it's a TV show instead of a Book.
That's the cutest fucken smile I've ever seen.
this one is a good actress
havent seen her at all this season. next season she'll have a way bigger role for sure
THIS IS MY ASHA
She's more like her here than Yara in the show
She sounds so much like Carey Mulligan!
more like Ellie kendrick.
or Ellie the one who look like her. :D
She's laaaaaaaaovely!
That's even mentioned in the book--in ACOK, Theon thinks at one point that "Asha" sounds too much like "Osha."
GoT really awakens the fanboyism in me. And especially Gemma seems awesome both IC and OOC.
She's very cute.
Agreed. Perfect image of what she should have been. She looks Israeli in your drawings. I always pictured her exactly like this.
I didn't mean that to be taken the wrong way btw. She IS beautiful but in a different way from the other girls. And what I'm trying to say is they should show a wide variety of looks on the show.

And Alife was like: Okay :(
Jan Gilbert: "Now if you had to get the chop on the show, how would you like to go?"
Gemma Whelan: "Ooh, I think she'd go by axe, wouldn't she? Some sort of axe disaster...something epic with an axe."
Me: "Uhhh...uh oh. Doesn't Euron have an axe?" o_O

Asha! It's Asha...
Asha and Osha... I still don't understand how anyone would get confused lol
And Syrio did?
She does a great job with her character. Would never have guessed she was so girly off set.
I'd pay the Iron Price for her
I think House Greyjoy and House Champagne could benefit from an alliance through marriage.
I suppose, yeah. Though, she has a certain "rugged" appeal that I wouldn't want to lose.
Poor old sophie
It's Asha Greyjoy ! Not Yara Greyjoy D:
True Game of Thrones fans don't mistake Asha GREYJOY and Osha the Wildling !
im confused as to why they changed her name and nothing else about her character
don't mess with the krakkens daughter.....
neither does Maisie as Arya or Peter Dinklage as Tyrion doesn't mean their performances are not great
Her looks aren't all that important, but I will never understand the name change. It's Asha dammit! I remember seeing a clip of George talking about why names are important in fiction.
It looks like a supermarket.
"Spies everywhere"
Varys is working for you? Isn't he :/
I still wish they had just called her Asha.
Osha and Asha sounded too familiar.
Come on people do you really think they can find actors that look exactly like the characters in the books!? I mean it would be great but It almost never happens that they can find actors that look like the characters described in the book(s)...

Her hair looks very Asha here!
Not every prominent female character can be a hot fox.
krakkens don't sow gemma....lol
Yara... lol I'm surprised that Robb Stark wasn't renamed Bob Stark so no one mistook him for Robert Baratheon. Such ghastly changes to the HBO series.
Ew, Bob Stark XD

She looks better with more weight.

You're joking right? Asha is too close to Arya? Yara is an anagram of Arya and sounds more like Arya.
l
That is a very weird reason, maybe you got it the wrong way round, maybe they said they decided to change her name to Yara so that it sounds like Arya. But why the hell would they want to do that, very strange, they should have stayed true to the book with this.

KoningsPrey go wind somebody else up
no offense to the actress, but she doesn't fit the original character description at all.
what an unfollowable pronunciation .___.
Who dafuq is Yara Greyjoy? She's supposed to be called Asha
