I realized Sunny plays the role of the silent protagonist for a reason. That videogame trope is usually used to immerse the player's self into the world. The player experiences the love and support of all the people Sunny cares about, only to be hit with the twist that Sunny, and therefore you, are the reason you tore everyone apart. Even if you didn't have a hand in it, didn't _want_ this, Sunny didn't want this either, his single damning action only being led by a misled outburst. This interpersonal connection with Sunny and the player ultimately plays a hand in the final fight. In what would normally have been the question of "Should the protagonist forgive himself for all the harm he's done?", the question becomes "Would *you* be capable of forgiving yourself were you in same position?"
When I realized the answer for me was no, this fight hurt me a lot more terribly.

You can see another good example of this in Streamers' and overall other players' reactions. While they were doing the truth segment, I saw some of them saying "I'm sorry" over ans over again, even if they didn't actually do anything. They never had a choice to push Mari down the stairs, hell that scene wasn't even playable in the game. But they felt such a strong connection to Sunny (even stronger if they named him after themselves) that they projected themselves onto him, and therefore began to feel sorry for actions they didn't even commit

It's so sad to me because I know for certain that if it were anyone else I would forgive them, but if it were me I just couldn't forgive myself, I wouldn't even be able to live with it. I literally had to imagine myself as completely separate from a child me that did it, so I could look at my child self and be capable of forgiving her. Then, the final battle of Omori vs Sunny made even more sense to me.

    • @Cazzi382
      @Cazzi382 13 днів тому

I just thought of this, and I think I would be incapable of forgiving my own self. Well, not without God.
But I think, like Sunny, that would torment my mind forever. But also like Sunny, I would have to get up and face it to survive. Fight or rot. It's what I experience every day. I make the conscious choice to continue battling life so I survive the next day. The cycle continues with me. It's like sprinting as fast as you can to some finish line, but never stopping to rest or even slowing down. I give everything, because it may cost me everything.

  • @TheAdvertisement

I just realized something. Whenever Sunny attacks, the battle narration says, "SUNNY attacked OMORI!", like normal. And when Omori attacks, it's mostly the same.
Except for when Omori uses his most damaging attacks in the later phases. Then the narration starts referring to Sunny as just an enemy. "OMORI erases the enemy." Omori doesn't see Sunny as a person, he just sees Sunny as a threat. A monster.

I'd say you're half right. It seems that, because Sunny didn't give himself up to Omori willingly (like in the end of the Hikikomori route), Omori was eventually forced to try and erase Sunny himself. That's why if you lose, Sunny disappears. Omori "erased" him from existence, and took control long enough to jump off the roof of the hospital.

    • @martinjoster3282
      @martinjoster3282 Рік тому +82

The erasure is a different attack, which does seem to tie in to OMORI just 'erasing' the things he deems harmful in Sunny's head, and also to his control over the hands (also how he trapped Basil with them and killed him to keep the truth hidden)

This masterpiece of a game has something for everyone, someone or something for everyone to relate to and feel close to, and once it finds its way in it rips your heart straight out. How no matter how much you cherish the memories you made with your friends as children, one day you will have to move on and start living a fulfilling life. Humphrey can be the last boss you fight in a very specifically set-up Sunny Route with no Kite Kid/Unbread Twins post-headspace shenanigans. You'd have to get one of the "Other" endings, i.e. from not entering Basil's room and instead choosing to go back to bed on One Day Left's night. Humphrey is even quite fitting as a final boss, considering it fills an actually quite similar role to OMORI within the story. He represents swallowing-up emotions, as well as encompassing the charade that is Headspace up nicely. He's a beloved childhood icon, transformed into nothing but an impenetrable wall by the desire to cover up The Truth. Very, very similar to what was going on with OMORI, except much less emotional value due to it being some whale instead of a character you've spent much of the game playing as. TL;DR, Humphrey is discount OMORI if you don't really want to cry during a battle and also if you want more strategy.

An old piano. The word 'Omori' is etched into its surface.
Omori is the piano. Black tank top, white boxers with black stripes. He is missing something. He is an empty piano with no player. The ultimate symbol of what Sunny did.
Sunny defeats him by playing the Duet. The concept of an empty piano, clashing against the concept of a piano finally being played.

OMORI was Sunny's own guilt, how he saw himself in that dreamworld. He didn't see himself worthy of having colors like the others, or having emotions without being forced to, he doesn't want to hurt his friends like he hurt Mari. He sees himself as this empty ghost who carries a knife everywhere, like the killer he thinks he is.
He completely isolated himself and hid from the truth putting this empty persona in his dreams.
But at that point in the game in the end of the game, when he wakes up in WHITE SPACE and sees OMORI, he realizes that they aren't the same. Sunny is Sunny. OMORI is OMORI.
This game meant so much to me, seeing Sunny decide that he should accept the truth and stop running from reality as OMORI in a fictional world in his dream, he hugs himself and accept himself as SUNNY.
that whole boss fight was about forgiveness, defeating OMORI was killing that guilt that has been atormenting him for so long, accepting the truth, the harsh reality for him to finally live in peace.

He shut himself so bad that he has a different personality in his own dreams with its own personality and role(Omori), that the second a dream character somehow reminds Omori or Sunny about the truth they are sent to the Black Space (Basil), that the Black Space, a realm specifically for holding guilt, dark thoughts or anything that will ruin the happiness of Headspace, exisfs. His escapism is so powerful that he is able to have dream world that is consistent, stays the same all the time, elaborate, complex and isn't forgotten and is there in every dream; Do you know how hard it is to remember your dreams, or how rare for it to be the same in multiple nights, I was actually surprised by how Omori/Sunny was able to remember his quest to save Basil for 3 days. He was so shut in that the only way to get him to understand the truth, is for multiple people to open up his doors again. And even then he still wanted to shut people out because Omori still existed and wanted to kill dream basil and stranger and keep the truth hidden from Sunny.

@@ahorribleterribleperson Anything that threatens to remind Omori of the Truth is seen as a Something, fades away, or disappears in a flash of black as Sunny's repression of the truth kicks in to keep Headspace safe. We learn that even one of Omori's favourite imaginary friends was banished from Headspace - for reasons no one in Headspace can remember. Abbi waits in The Abyss on the OMORI route, and she knows OMORI is the DREAMER.
Something I don't see people talking about much is... Capt. Spaceboy is from a comic that Sunny, Kel, and Aubrey all really enjoyed reading together, but I see Spaceboy and Sweetheart as being parallels/amped-up versions of Headspace Omori and Aubrey that play out fantasies of relationships between Sunny and Aubrey, with Sweetheart invariably breaking Spaceboy's heart. Headspace Aubrey has a crush on Omori, while Sunny had a seemingly one-sided crush on Aubrey before everything happened. Sunny also clearly idolized Hero, as Headspace Hero is more or less Mr. Perfect all the time while real Hero is pretty great but flawed.
It's also fairly strongly implied that Sunny's Headspace has gone through multiple editions in his around four years of being a shut-in.

How many days has he spent in this state?
How many insults has he thrown at himself?
How many nights did he cry himself to sleep?
How many nightmares did Sunny have, only to wake up and realize he cant sleep in Mari’s bed anymore?
How many times did he consider taking his own life?
How many times did Sunny talk or look at his own mother and felt undeserving of her love and affection?
How many times did he think about his friends and just think of how much they would hate him if he were to tell the truth? And simultaneously, how many times must he have hated himself for being too afraid to tell people what he did?

I just realised just how important each and every single one of those are to their respective character. Indeed they each said these things to Sunny, but they have much more meaning.
Kel's words relate to how he wasn't there for his friends but during our last three days was able to succeed in being there for all of his friends.
Aubrey has struggled with finding peace and happiness wishing she could find it, but she started finding this peace when she made up with her old friends.
Hero left all of them and feels guilty for letting everyone split apart and left everyone when they needed each other the most. But he came back and was determined to help bring and keep everyone together.
Basil desperately wanted things to go back to the way they were, but even when everyone was together and things COULD go back to how things were, he was much to afraid to let things go back.
They were each able to begin the true healing process of what happened 3-4 years ago, so its time for Sunny to begin to truly heal. To do this, Sunny needed to forgive himself, but he couldn't until this final scene.

This game. This fucking game. I would've never thought that it would manage to break me several times while I was playing.
The first one was when I decided to go to Basil's house after a while because I wanted to water the flowers and see if I missed something. Seeing his deteriorating house and the amount of detail that was put into the game. That was definitely an experience which I'll never forget.
The second one was when everyone forgot about Basil and who he actually was. Especially the time when Kel just threw away his flower crown without any hesitation. I've always sympathised with Basil, so it was extremely hard for me to deal with everyone forgetting someone so important and being the only one remembering him, but I kept going.
The third one was fighting Omori. I didn't really think much about what he was saying until I unironically game overed before you're supposed to lose. I restarted and then I decided to actually think about his words. That was me. He said exactly everything what I've been telling myself for the past 4 years (not counting Mari's death, of course), as if my mind was digitized and projected on my monitor. It's also heartbreaking knowing that he played this in fulfillment of his sisters wish to play together, but in turn is honoring her request to forgive himself and move on.

Not to be rude or condescending but Omori is, at least in my opinion, not really a manifestation of guilt, he's more of a manifestation of erasing guilt, of separating yourself of other people, of denial, and of escapism. Something is more of a manifestation of guilt, since it is everywhere. It appears especially when guilt is at highest, like during one of the neutral Endings, before it can only follow you in your dreams, but it started to appear in real life, because Sunny is about to move without coming to terms with his guilt and rebonding with basil.

Ōmori means "large forest", which reminds me of the world that he created to escape from that weight. And in romanian, omori means "to kill", and this is how Sunny saw himself all that time, as a killer

This fight, and entire ending, is going to stick with me for the rest of my life. I have never experienced anything like this before. I cried, hard, and didn't stop even after the game's credits had finished. And let me preface this by saying that I never cry, even when I want to I don't. Even when I try to let myself cry I can't. It'll start and stop just as fast. I didn't just cry because it was sad, but because a lot of what Omori says to Sunny felt directed at me. That all I do is burden others while doing nothing. That I just make everyone who cares about me take care of me. That I'm worthless, and I've never done anything worth being proud of. The memories that you have as a child of your friends and family that just sort of disappear as you get older. How different your life was then compared to now. How different you are, and neither for the better. It was such a personal experience, and I don't think I'll ever have something like that again. Fuck you for making this game, but also thank you. I can't even begin to describe how much this game has given me. I wish I had the proper words and could articulate it. But just know that this game has changed my life. Good times will be again.

They asked me if I relate to Omori. I told them no. I told them this was about childhood memories and overcoming phobias, both of which I lacked.
I was wrong. That’s just surface level.
This was about coming to terms with guilt, with the past. To find peace in acknowledging it, as opposed to destroying yourself with and over it.

      both represent different things:
undertale is a song that plays at the end of your journey, its melancholic, yes, it makes you remember and hold dear the moments you spent in the underground, the people you've spared, those you fought, the ones you met. It makes you feel sad about leaving everything behind, and asking you if exiting the underground is really a great idea, if thats what you really want
omori, while also being melancholic, is in a completely different sense. You aren't remembering dear old memories, nor holding them close to you, you are facing your biggest mistake and the cause for your trauma, the murder of your sister, while fighting virtually yourself in an attempt to come to terms with it, that way you can end the cycle of suffering. It doesnt make you feel sad about your journey being over, it makes you feel like shit for killing someone that mattered for everyone close to you and for your innability to say the truth and to stand up against said trauma, with some remembrance to your past actions in the game that foreshadowed what truly happened
They both are sad in their own context, but for me, omori is just sadder, since it mixes the "your journey is finally over" feeling with "will the suffering truly be gone? or is this just another futile attempt at it", while in-game you are thrown the heaviest and most tear-inducing imagery and words one can ever hear

it adds to the hopeless feeling you get when confronting any emotional struggle. no matter how much progress the people around you say you're making, or even howucj progress you feel like you've made, it always seems like your issues - whether it be depression, motivation, anger, (personal past experiences) or in sunny's case guilt - are unaffected. like your energy, thought, effort, blood, sweat, and tears were worth nothing, for nothing. and like the fight itself portrays, it's a crushing feeling unless you can choose to continue. realizing within yourself that it wasn't for nothing and that you are in fact getting better.
ive been in therapy for at least 8 years now battling these things, and being the oldest sibling and not having any parental roles I felt I could look up to, I couldnt have that mari reminding me to calm down, to focus, to persist, to overcome. and so the issues I had ate at me. my therapist gave me that advice, and to this day she still does because I still struggle with some of these things. I can't find the motivation to do anything, I don't see worth in my accomplishments, I don't even trust anyone enough to show my face around them.
no matter how hard you fight, it feels like the problems are still there, and more often then not it feels like it's your own fault, at least that's what it was like for me. but at the same time, they get better. I remember it being much worse when I was younger, and it's not nearly as bad now. sometimes i, sometimes you, sometimes we just need a reminder of how far we've come and the strength we had to have to get here.
that's how I was able to relate to this game and this fight, and that's why I love it so much. not only did this fight remind sunny that things can and will get better if you try, it also reminded me that when I tried, and when I still do with each passing day, it's worth something and it does make progress

You can't kill your inner demons. But you might be able to make peace with them.

    [SPOILER & SUICIDAL IDEATION WARNING.]
    This song is a masterpiece.
The feelings and sounds of desperation, trying to fight back against your own personal demon, the part of you that hates yourself entirely and latches onto every ounce of guilt that builds onto itself year after year, and how it is so *incredibly* difficult to come back from a mental state like this. How it is a literal battle between life and death when you're stuck in a state like this. Depression latches onto every little detail about yourself you dislike, and amplifies it to the point where it becomes a monster, wearing you down over time and making you feel less and less every day. It grips so tightly onto the guilt of past mistakes and it uses that guilt as a weapon. It twists your perception of reality to a point where you're never truly certain what anyone thinks about you, you're never truly certain if the steps you're taking are the right ones, and it *cripples* your ability to truly accept you for who you are.
*Fighting against it is hard. It is an uphill battle, and if you are reading this and struggling, please, don't give into it. Don't let it win, don't let it completely envelope you. Fight it.*
The wording of "Do you want to continue?" at this sequence is *masterful*. It's a very clever way to talk about how in the end, it's *your* choice to keep going on, to keep getting better, to keep fighting to stay alive and see the ones you love and cherish. If you choose "yes", you remember to find a reason to continue on. The people you love, the things you love doing, the parts of life that keep you at peace.
It's even better how OMORI can never truly be defeated in the fight. There is no cure for depression, it's something you just have to accept is there, and it's something you have to live with. Like the static and distortion from this song, it'll get loud, it'll get violent, it'll make it hard to concentrate, but in the end, it's a part of you. And you will have to keep reminding it that you love yourself for who you are, and that you are capable of being forgiven.
*If you are struggling with depression, please, don't give up, like I said earlier. I know we probably haven't met and probably might not, but I still love you. It's going to be okay. You will get through this. You'll find a way to be happy. I know you will.*

I truly felt like I was in Sunny’s shoes, this track is brilliantly made to reflect what anxiety, sadness, and guilt feels like.

I'll never get over how brilliant this song is - it gets more distorted and harsh the further it goes on, like your own thoughts trying harder and harder to break your resolve. It mirrors how easy it is to say, "Yeah, this time" but then the further you go on, the more weaker you start to become as you're barraged endlessly with your own negativity.
It's not a long boss fight, nor a complicated one, but it's a very memorable one.

ive contemplated suicide for many years, and had major anxiety for the past few years due to the decisions i have made that i wish i can take back. Nothing could connect me more than the relationship on Omori, Sunny, and Me, myself. Even though this game has cost me a few nights ( worrying about basil, i connect a lot to him, his anxiety mirrors mine) i have finished the game and i have grown a bit better about how i view myself. There are less nights when i cry myself to sleep and less beatings on myself, though the anxiety never goes away, it has decreased.
These battles to overcome fears really do help me with anxiety, and im happy this game came out when i was at the pit of my battle.

Right until the background kicks in creating this immediate schism in your ears, the calm serine Violin vs the haunting echos of guilt.

This whole fight had some of the most memorable and reflective lines in the series, throughout the entire fight. It really shows how much everything has weighed down on Sunny and how guilty he feels. It’s so incredibly impactful and it made me really unsettled.
“You've caused so much suffering... yet you do nothing.”
“And so you've earned nothing in return.”
“Your friends will never forgive you.”
“They'll abandon you like you did them... and that's what you deserve.”
“You tell yourself that you don’t want to burden others…”
“But the truth is that you’re selfish, you just don’t want other people to depend on you.”
“When do you care about people? How long are you going to let people take care of you?”
“You say you care but you’re a liar. You’ve never done anything for anyone else.”
    “You’re useless… less than that. You’re sick.”
    “You don’t deserve to live.”
“Your friends are wrong about you. The person they love isn’t you at all.”
“You let them believe in a lie to protect yourself.”
“You’re nothing but a liar… and when they see the truth… They’ll hate you as much as you hate yourself.”
“If they know the truth, you'll never be able to regain their trust.”
“No matter what you do, it will be hopeless.”
“All you'll do is make things worse. It would be better to just die.”
“It would be better to just die.”
“You killed Mari. She loved you and you killed her.”
“Hero loved her and you killed her.”
“Aubrey loved her and you killed her.”
“Kel loved her and you killed her.”
“Basil loved you and you killed her.”
“You loved her and you killed her.”
    “You should just die.”
But, despite the guilt Omori is trying so hard to pressure him with, Sunny still tries so hard to see the good in things and motivates himself with what everyone says to help him persevere.
Kel: “Friends... Friends are supposed to be there for each other.”
Aubrey: “I hope you can find some peace... or you know... some happiness.”
Hero: “Last time... We made the mistake of leaving each other when we needed each other the most. This time... we'll stay together.”
Basil: “Maybe one day... things can go back to the way they were before.”
Mari: “You'll forgive yourself... Won't you... Sunny?”
For me, this is up there as one of the best final boss sequences I’ve ever gone up against, and final Duet just really seals the deal. This fight was incredible from start to finish, no matter how unnerving it was. Omori… what a beautiful game…
