  • Okay it’s an open secret but we talk to the Thomas & Thomas guys at the Marlborough #flyfishing Show about their new flagship rod for 2024: the Avantt II, as well as some other options for anglers who are a little more price conscious.

Still not enough emphasis on handle grip ergonomics and comfort, really it’s getting like that industry-wide. The missle-shaped 6.5 inch grip is horrible, the widest part of the cork should be in front or middle, not the rear, it would provide so much better control (The front 2” of the cork is un-usable), it might be fine for smaller hands but not for many of us. And there is not enough of a bump to support the palm. I own an Avantt, it’s a wonderful blank with great action and craftsmanship, but the grip shape and length (only 6.5 inches) ruins it. I am having my rod customized, handle section rebuilt with a 7” cork grip (the standard length all 9 ft. Fly rods used to have years ago) with the cork that tapers smaller towards the rear and flare at the end. But many folks can’t afford to do this and don’t want to have to put in that effort. It’s time for fly rod manufacturers to start learning from the past, instead of cutting corners on the cork - the main goal seems to be to make a grip that can be duplicated easily and to skimp on length and diameter. Please give us some grip choices that are ergonomic, everything else you have done is top-notch.
