The ground should be used run it to where that mount went on your old stereo Austin that’s actually what the hole in the back of the head unit is for ground strap or wire. The radio will get better reception and you will get rid of the vehicle feedback coming from ignition etc. it has the wire because the newer stereos had plastic tabs to mount them speaking from experience hook the ground wire up my friend! Cheers
the older radios from mopar grounded through the antenna plug. Ran into this when changing to aftermarket in my sis 96 breeze. You can use the later cd units like you said. We stuck one in a 86 ram from a 90s jeep.
Every dash should be that easy to access.

The radio in my 57 Plodge was missing, replaced it with an 8trak player….. great anti theft device!
That's the famous Mopar 1.5 DIN radio opening size.
Austin ,Mopar always had good quality head units with good sound.Mike the Greek
Yep did that some thing to my van when the radio stopped working
To put a newer “radio” you’re lucky the plugs match. It’s a pain to put it in otherwise!!!!
Looks perfect

Word of advice dont change tracks on your phone in tennesse....even if you are setting still at a red light.
I almost slid out of my recliner, you used a real screwdriver 🪛 instead of your pocket knife!
