Ep. 2: Cross Country in a 1963 Chrysler! The Badlands! South Dakota Travel Road Trip National Park
Episode 2: Welcome to the Badlands
In this episode we leave Wall, SD and take a route down through Badlands National Park. This route adds 40 minutes to the trip (not counting stops). Going I-90 the same distance is about 20 minutes.
This video shows essentially the entire drive through the Badlands with several stops along the way to admire the landscape and wildlife. After leaving the Badlands I make a stop at a few places before getting back on the Interstate headed east.
Enjoy the trip!

    I had a white '65 Satellite with a black vinyl roof and center console shift as my first car. It was unique styling for Mopar at the time; my Dad once said it reminded him of a Mercedes. I wrecked it, unfortunately. I don't know how long I would have kept it, but I had bee racing it (amateur for sure!) and had already broken a motor mount. I'd really like another one but I don't know where I'd even begin to search. Oh, and if you see a '63 Avanti anywhere, let me know.

    71+ year old FUD here. Well that was a trip down memory lane to my youth. Trouble is some memories are fading. In the video about the ‘72 Coronet I mentioned my folks ‘65 Dodge Coronet 440 that I did my first legal driving in. The similarities with that 65 Belvedere start with the 318 with the automatic transmission. The column shift lever is similar but not exactly the same shape. Our Coronet definitely had power steering but I don’t think it had power brakes. Tires were 7.75-14. Interior and trim were a step up from the Belvedere series. The things I can’t remember is the shape of the speedometer and instrument panel layout. Also no remembrance of the heater controls. It seems the slide to open or close the heater valve might have been laid out horizontally and parallel to a slide to control if heat went to floor or defroster vents. I’ve never heard the word POLY attached to the 318. What does that signify? The only thing I remember about the engine was that the air cleaner cover had “250 HP” or maybe it spelled out horsepower but definitely 250. Remembering all the details from over fifty years ago is somewhat taxing on my remaining little grey cells. I remember the first summer the folks had the Coronet we made the drive from central Iowa to the Black Hills with the requisite stops at the Corn Palace in Pierre (that’s pronounced Peer) South Dakota and Wall Drug. It was hotter than Hell. I was only 12 so mostly slept on the back seat with a towel rolled up in the window to keep from getting sun and wind burned.We were tent camping so hot in day and cold at night. Sturgis was a nice little town then. Deadwood was great for kids. Not so much now IMHO. The 318 on that Belvedere sounds great though those duals. What did you do with the carb? I would have just put in a carb kit including new bushings on the throttle and choke shafts. Regarding the trunk lock my impatience would have gotten the better of me. I’d have just called a good locksmith to have a key made. I admit that your finding the new lock was the better result in the long run. Happy motoring!😊

      @@davewinter2688 The Poly 318 was the A318. The A engine was introduced in 1956 for Plymouth as a 277 and by 1957 it was up to 318. This engine was used until 1966 in Plymouths along side the LA273 V8 introduced in 1964. The LA318 would replace the A318 “Poly” for 1967. The block is virtually the same between the two but the Poly engine has Polysphere combustion chambers. So the heads are wider with overlapping rockers similar to a Hemisphere engine. You’ll also hear people refer to the Poly 318 as a “wide block” as well.

    • @davewinter2688
      @davewinter2688 День тому

      @@ObsoleteAutomotive I see. Poly vs Hemi. A friend of mine from back in the mid 1970’s had a 1967 Dodge Dart , I think it was called a Sport but not sure, with the 273. I’d never even heard of that engine before then. It was a two door hard top with bucket seats and floor mounted shifter for what I assume was a Torque Flite or is that Flyte transmission. He gave it to his teenage son who promptly ruined it by not paying attention to the coolant mixture. Result was a cracked block when it got down far below 32°F. Frost plugs didn’t help at all.

    My truck wasn't really meant to be a work truck but I use it as one. It's not as vintage as yours either but it qualifies at 27 years old. It's a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 SS/T. I use it to haul my boat across the state and back, haul leaves and brush to the dump. It helped a lot when I was emptying out my old house and moving to a new one a few years ago. It's got the 5.9L V8 and a four speed automatic. It originally came from South Carolina. I bought it on Ebay back about 2006 and by then it was in Kittery, ME. It's horrible in snow so I park it all winter so it really never sees salt although it does see snow. It's only got two little rust spots, the driver side wheel arch on the box and the passenger side rocker panel has a small hole I patched up. It's got all of 102K miles on it. If you are interested here's a quick video I made last winter doing a cold start after sitting over two months in my backyard. ua-cam.com/video/OBvfRps38Xg/v-deo.htmlsi=hA7WDddUfdSlBxHc

    I remember these in white as a post sedan used by the Hyattsville Police Department. Small town used big sedans with large V8 engines using enormous amounts of the taxpayer's money to purchase gasoline. The price of gasoline then was only about 30 cents per gallon. They struck fear when viewed in the rearview mirror of teenagers since they just knew that lights would likely flash in moments for any number of reasons. I really like the old Mopar cars and trucks. 71+ year old FUD here. I can remember every car my folks had back to the 1950 Plymouth. All had “3 on the tree” with no radio or AC until they bought a new 1965 Dodge Coronet 440 with the 318 V8. Finally got an AM radio but still no AC.😢 We lived in a really small (population about 225 ) Iowa town so only jobs for youngsters were working for farmers. I actually learned to drive tractors and trucks pulling wagons on country roads before I was old enough to get a learners permit. Got that learners permit at age 14 in 1967 and did my first legal driving in the Coronet. Dad let me drive a lot even when I only had the learners permit. I had a lot of miles in the Coronet before I got my license at 16. The first car I owned was a 1970 Plymouth Duster with a 198 cu. in. slant six and “three on tree”, no power anything, AM radio AND hang on under dash Chrysler Air Temp AC. I got the car used in 1972 while in college so don’t know if the AC was a so-called dealer ad on or what but I remember that Chrysler Air Temp logo on the under dash evaporator. I don’t remember if it had any safety interlock on the steering column or if you had to push the clutch to the floor to start it. I learned to drive those tractors and trucks with manual transmissions so it was just automatic to put a vehicle in gear when parking especially on any incline. Seldom used the parking brake so it was some times a coordination trick to start before it rolled too far down an incline.😂 Kept that car for six years until some guy rear ended me and it was totaled. I was a dedicated MOPAR driver both cars and trucks until the early 1990’s when Chrysler started going to crap. The last daily driver we had was the tin can 1987 Plymouth Reliant K Car with the 2.2L 4 cylinder. Good fuel mileage but nothing else. You’ve heard of being nickeled and dimed to death? That thing $400’erd me to death. Bad injectors and head gasket problems. Never less than $400 when it went to the shop. Now the only Chrysler product I have left is my 1954 Dodge Coronet with a 241 Hemi and two speed Power Flite automatic transmission. I can pass a semi going up hill with no problems.

    Only a virtual collector should have that car.I don't believe that you are a collector as you stated that you have put about 20,000 miles on the car since you got it and that isn't collector mileage. I have owned a 1972 Dodge Dart Custom 4 door sedan with a 318 V8, Torqueflite Automatic Transmission, Factory Air Conditioning, Power Steering, Power Brakes and Factory Vinyl Roof. Ihave owned it since 2015 and have put less than 1,000 miles on it. It stays on a 'Battery Tender' . I start and run the car periodically and am in the process of converting the distributor to electronic ignition with a new coil, ignition wires and a new sett of factory spark plugs which for this car are Champions. I was able to get the car at that time (precovid) for $2800 and find the yellow-gold paint with dark green interior and the matching dark green vinyl roof. I recall these cars when they were brand new as I am 71 now. It is an enjoyable time capsule that takes me back to 1972 when I was just 19.

      @@glennfields8121 Why own a car to just let sit there and go to waste? I buy cars to enjoy them. I collect them and drive them because otherwise you might as well just own some Matchbox cars to look at. Cars are meant to be driven. I get FAR more enjoyment out of driving these cars on trips and having fun than being able to say I kept the mileage low while it sits there. The definition of collector doesn’t state you never touch them and let them gather dust. You just own things… that’s what collecting is.
