Stuck in the future and trying to find my way back!
Hello!
My name is Austin and I’ve been around classic cars my entire life. I’ve owned countless vintage automobiles. I’ve restored them and brought many back from the dead but most of all I love to drive them. No distance has ever been too far. I have many cross country cruises under my belt. People have been telling me for years to make a UA-cam channel so here it is!
This channel focuses on all things related to obsolete automobiles! Featuring classic cars, road trips, fun and interesting destinations of yesteryear, auto restoration and repair, and more!

New Aluminum Radiator for a 1966 Chrysler 440! The BEST & CHEAPEST option! Car Repair Obsolete Cars
After my radiator blew up in my '66 Chrysler Town & Country in New Hampshire on a 2000 mile trip back in July I was able to repair the radiator to get home and kept driving the car. I started looking for options on how to replace the aftermarket radiator in my car before it left me stranded again.
I searched high and low and found that the best and cheapest option was a cheap aluminum radiator off ebay. Its a direct bolt in to a 1966 Chrysler big block with A/C.
See how it goes in!

What is Fluid Drive? Fluid drive was Chrysler's stop gap measure to fulfill the need for a competitive transmission in the age of newly introduced automatic transmissions in the 1930s and 1940s from other makes. This was an ingenious way to utilize already in production transmissions and making a totally new way of driving utilizing a simple fluid coupling. Check it out! See extra content, get ...

Good exterior colors. Great that it is four door. -Nothing worse than a wagon with two doors so it is hard to get to the space (unless it is a subcompact or smaller vehicle) which makes no sense but turns on the guys where style always reigns supreme über alles. Functional design is so important & enjoyable if you really live with a vehicle & use it, instead of just want to look at it... Much much better when at original height (or even a little higher like American cars typically were set up when sold in Australia (to deal with the rough road conditions) when they might use larger diameter wheels/tires, somewhat stiffer springs & shocks, etc.). I always thought the tower taillights in the late 50s Desotos were handsome. Neat that you can exchange them for the Plymouth lights. I have appreciated the solidity of vehicles that are not convertibles, and not hardtops, so the glass is held securely even after 100k miles on the odometer, and don't rattle when the door is closed.

I have 62 2-door hard in my possession now. Looking to restore. Good video 👍
With a name like Badlands, it’s has to be good.
One of the cleanest gauge clusters in an American car. I’m really liking the transmission for some reason… thanks for the ride.
@@Jvaishnava It was a great trip!
I wonder why it's necessary to push the clutch to switch gears? If the reason for the clutch is to disengage the engine (power) from the transmission, but there is no physical connection between the transmission and the engine with the fluid coupling, what would the clutch pedal actually be doing?
@@Vespanation There is a hydraulic connection. At idle the hydraulic fluid allows the transmission to essentially slip so as not to stall out but the connection is still present. When driving the connection must be broken with the clutch to be able to shift gears like a conventional manual transmission. When the engine is off there is no hydraulic connection so the car will just free wheel.
My father's car in 1967. A pretty blue Fury II. I was 5 years old this year. Great memory!
I used that radiator in my 72 Newport, fit like a glove and works like a champ. I have the Chinese radiator in my 66, though. Yikes. Great video!!
If you were driving a 1976 Aspen two door, you would think you were driving a 1976 Dart two door. Maybe???
im not a 100% original guy myself. I like things that make the car better. Im all for it.
When I was a kid hot rod guy, we called it “Dynaslow”.
I like it straight piped.
That new radiator looks good. I was looking on eBay for the one with the largest core I'm pretty sure that is the same core support as in my 68 300
Love those Chryslers 🇺🇸
that is a cool looking car
Any car is dependable with maintenance.
Try EVANS HIGH-PERFORMANCE COOLANT. It is unique in the world of coolant. It may eliminate problems with aluminum radiators in vehicles that were not originally designed for such.
I have no problem with a Chinese radiator, provided that it is high-quality, which this seems to be. There is pushback about Chinese products for two reasons - sometimes poor quality. Also in Chinese culture, there are no intellectual property laws. Instead, they have a point of pride of making perfect copies. This has been in their DNA for thousands of years. Some Chinese products that I need to use in my work are very high-quality, and some are obviously pretty crappy. If this product was available for one of my old cars, I would never spend $800 to $2000 on a different brand.
@@davidgold5961 Exactly. Just because something is made elsewhere doesn’t automatically mean it’s bad quality.
Beaut
New subscriber here. Your radiator should fit 1965-68 C-body Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge big block. Might be more years but I don't know for certain. I would love to find a small block version of your radiator for my 318 small block '68 Plymouth Fury VIP. I looked up the people who made your radiator and they don't have a small block rad. (The original rad is a 22). At the time I had to get a replacement for the original, all I could find out there is that same CU332 rad you had fail on you and like yours, it failed on me around the top of the tank. Had to do some creative work with the upper rad hose as it was in the wrong place for my 318. All of the part store computers said it was a direct fit. It wasn't. There is an eBay aluminum rad in the car now that's a 22 that was supposed to be a direct fit. Maybe for a Dart but not a Fury. Had to drill extra holes in the bracket. It would not accept my original 22 in fan shroud and the auto transmission connection were weak so one of them is on a hose. There has to be something better even for us on a budget.
@@patricklynch1962 I lucked out that this was a bolt in deal. I know they make reproduction B body radiators in aluminum which might be something they could be made to work as well? Might take some investigating.
@@ObsoleteAutomotive Your video has me on a new search and it doesn't look like my choices have improved any without spending big money. I'll keep looking. The Fury has factory A/C so when I get that working again, I'll want something that the radiator shroud can mount to. You have excellent taste in old Mopars.
Good solution! Best part is that it works and fits as good as the OEM part and costs way less than other available non-fitting replacements. Kudos!
I love the old cars, I daily drive them ,if you keep up on the maintenance they are very dependable, and ride way better than new cars. Keep up the great work on the cars and videos. Thanks man
@@marvsmith8137 Daily drivers are the only old cars I want. I have no use for cars that just sit in a garage gathering dust!
@ObsoleteAutomotive same here
Really like that wagon . Hopefully that radiator last a little longer ✌️
@@grego934 I hope so! I know others with the same radiator and they haven’t had any issues with years of use. Should be good for a while I imagine.
I think you did right thing, reasonable thing buying this aluminum radiator instead of a super expensive brass one. If it lasts just 5 years it was worth it. Just need to keep an eye on other parts of cooling system, mostly just the water pump, as I'm sure you do 👍
Love your videos, thanks

Oh wow Austin, this is a heartbreaking ending to an otherwise great trip. At least it happened close to home and not far away. Those Chryslers like testing your resolve.
@@douglasnieblas74 It was a perfect trip until then. Shame. But atleast I was near home!
I love your vlogs! When my father-in-law died in 1989, he still had his work car, a 1966 Chrysler Newport 383 2 bbl. I was giving the car, because I was able to store it. ×hen I got bored I would drive it around, even though it had 89 Michigan plates. It only had 47 K miles on it. It ran great, he only ever drove it to work. I fixed a few things added new air conditioning and polished it up. I kept it till 2007 and put it up for sale. A guy in finnland. Bought it and he had it shipped to over to him, I kept in touch with him for a few years. He had repainted the car and added fancy wheels. Then he just drove it around. I'm glad a person bought it who loved it. It was a huge car as you know. Anyway that's my story!
@@markmcclenaghanirish23 I’ve sold a few cars overseas. I hate to see them go but at least you know they will love and care for the car!
That’s a beautiful wagon Austin and well worth it. Now you just need to rebuild the 440 to deal with the oil consumption and that wagon will be perfect.
Austin, this is one of my favorite cars in your fleet. I'm a real Mopar nut. Also, what is that thing in the top rad hose?
@@MarkB.-mo3lz It’s a filter. You can unscrew the cap to remove the screen and clean it out. It traps any debris that might break loose inside the engine and such. Pretty handy.
@ObsoleteAutomotive I thought it may be a filter, but I've never seen one before. Good thing to have on an older vehicle.
And this is the 1966 Scenicruiser Tour Bus to see all of New England in. That car probably handles like a Greyhound Bus!
What's New England without lobster rolls? You won't leave there and not try ONE?
@@davidzdziarek-zl8cu I had to get lobster rolls and a lobster dinner just because I was there. “When in Rome.”
This is as close to Maine as i've EVER been. Very Montauk Point like, and you expect it.
OMG I haven't seen one of those in years lol my aunt & uncle had one when I was a kid it was gold lol
I have a radiator I found at a junkyard (Machias, WA) in my '76 Valiant. The donor was a Dart originally from AZ with a V8, AC, trailer-tow package. I grabbed the shroud, clutch set up and walked out the gate about $25 lighter in the wallet. Had Stan's Radiator right up highway 9 boil it out, pressure test and fix a leak between the top tank & core. That was over 5 years ago, still in the car now here in NC. For the BB '69 Dart? Did an aluminum radiator since the factory one was long gone & not about to pay the insane money the re-pop guys want- the car was originally a Swinger 340, but a '68 RR 383 powertrain was cobbled in back in '77-'78. It's a resto mod now & can never easily go back to stock. Can't blame you, Austin
@@olikat8 You gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. If you got enough time and money you can make about anything happen but I lack both of those things so I did it quick and cheap. And it works!
Thanks for the video, checked out GPI after watching this. They don't have any Studebaker radiators, but planning on talking to them about making one.
@@r1lark Good luck!
What a sweet wagon. I got an aluminum radiator for my coronet. I had to weld some tabs so the shroud fit properly, but other than that it's looks and works good
@@Ikeebeabuchi nice! Seems nobody makes correct shroud brackets for this car except for the one I found! Perfect fit!
I had one. Exact. It was difficult to find a Daniel Core for it. The original DD/CD tank is indestructible. Thanks for loving these wonderful Mopars.
I think you mean DPCD...Dodge Chrysler Plymouth Desoto
@ No. the tanks were embossed DD CD.
I never heard the thing about aluminum radiators not fitting or being useful. That sounds like a bunch of crap to me. Just makes sense aluminum cools better
Some folks just don’t believe in trying new things or exploring other options. They also have unlimited budgets. I do what’s the most cost effective and works!
The radiator looks like a perfect fit The only thing I don't understand is why wouldn't you just use a screwdriver instead of a pocket knife for a tool?
It’s an on going joke. I used a Swiss Army knife in an old video and people got angry about it. So now I purposely use it even though I have like 100 screw drivers.
I knew of several people that owned New Yorker wagons (1966). The '66s had poor quality control and reliability issues.
Love watching work done on a car like yours. Brings back memories and a sense of satisfaction fixing things. Thanks for a good vid.
@@jeff8ball Thanks for commenting and watching! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Not often you get a result like that maybe you should have bought two of them!
@@jonboy9912 I did actually!
People like to hear themselves type. I got an alum rad but haven't put it in yet, I didn't have any concerns. There's no internal steel to aluminum contact to corrode, just maybe where it meets the core support. Looks fine to me- price, shape, size, what the temp gauge says... its all good.
@@20CentMotors-z3b Some folks just hear something and stick with it until death even if it’s wrong or misguided. With the thickness of the aluminum and the full welds… this radiator should last a long time. The main thing is I don’t see the need to spend $2000 when $130 will work. I’m not that concerned with the looks of something 99% of people won’t see.
They say that you should keep an eye on the PH level of your coolant. Some just replace it all periodically because it slowly gets worse and can rot your radiator.
@@just-incase Periodic maintenance (which one should be doing anyway) I think alleviates any issues.
Did you find out what is causing the oil consumption problem?
@@Hudson-1947 Not yet. Have to do things when I have free time… which is pretty lacking these days. I’ll do a compression test and see how the cylinders might be. The engine doesn’t bellow out smoke. Could be the heads. Since the car is still drivable as is I’m going to focus on cars needing more attention. Hopefully the next major project is going through my 1963 Chryslers engine and getting it back on the road.
@@ObsoleteAutomotive I'm rebuilding a 58 Lincoln 430 right now. It's costly to dive into an engine.
@ Oh yea I’m hoping it won’t be a full blown rebuild but I’m sure I’ll see things I don’t like once I crack it open.
I had to have the original radiator on my '66 worked on twice. Those cars don't cool well and the radiator is a pain to get in and out. Great cars but I don't miss it. Rad shops usually won't attempt to repair aftermarket units because the material is so thin.
@@TylersNeighborhoodGarage I literally had people tell me that it’s normal to have your radiator repaired every year for leaks. I’m like… uh no. That’s not normal. But that’s the mentality of some of these folks and their trailer queens. The aftermarket radiator that was in this car was subpar in every way. I swear they don’t really even use much for solder. Never seen a tank just blow apart like it did. I hauled that junk radiator off on a scrap run.
With part’s being global, who really cares of the country of origin. If it works, then bingo. Anybody who watches YOUR video on YOUR car creates revenue for you, but it is hard to filter out the Boomers and Karens. I really like your videos.
@@geraldhutten7338 I’m sure you saw the comment about how I’m a disappointment to these cars by making it have a reliable radiator for cheap. I searched and searched and inquired to several companies and this radiator is the ONLY one that I could verify as actually bolting up and working without extensive modifications. And after several months and hundreds of miles it is still A-Okay! I know folks with this same radiator that’s been using them for years without issue. And it’s $130-$140… I literally can buy 10 or more of these for the price people were wanting for other radiators that might not even bolt up!
Is it for sale?
@@stevekearns2125 Not unless you got a lot of cash. I’m not interested in selling this one. Thanks!
