Hello Thetazord [ @Thetazord ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Well, apparently, she was on the album with Ayreon with Devin Townsend. So I must’ve heard her at one point. I just didn’t realize it. Thank you so much for sharing all that with me. I love finding out all this new information about these amazing artists. This is definitely an artist and a group that I will check out in my free time as well because this is the type of music that I really get into. Listen to this style of music all throughout my 20s. Nightwish and Symphony X - arguably two of the most complex, literate and talented bands out there. They are both at the top of my favorite list. It's really a shame that they have largely been ignored in the US.

Yes, it's frustrating that us in North America are spoon fed, what I can only describe at hot garbage, on our top 40. 2019 was when reactions like this started to pop up on my UA-cam recommended, and that was when I first saw this. I'd heard of Nightwish, but just could NOT get into their first singer, so I wrote them off way back in the early 2000s. After my first hit of Floor, I went deeeep into "you might like.." and found so many more European groups that I'd heard of, but never heard. They just don't get airplay over here. Actual musicians and writers still exist, just not on our radios. I've since added several new bands to my playlists. As for Nightwish, I guess since I'm a little (lot) older now, I have grown to like some of the first singer's contributions, and have added over a dozen Nightwish songs to my driving tracks. Almost universally, this band is best enjoyed live. They feed off the crowd and really amp it up. The only exception is singer #2, who struggled with consistency. She has a decent voice, but just couldn't bring it to the stage on a regular basis. That said, it was the 2 albums she sang on that contain some of my favourite songs. Thankfully, Floor can easily cover that material and makes the live versions fantastic. Enjoy the rabbit hole you just dropped in to.
I couldn’t agree more and the term hot garbage is exactly what I would describe the mechanized music, industry of Hollywood and everything that they churn out. it’s really sick and that’s what turned me away from modern music for so long. When I listened to music it was 60s 70s 80s and some 90s rock. I just got so sick of the soulless music that was being churned out over and over and over again. Artist singing songs that have no emotional connection to the lyrics and you could tell by the way that they sing and present their music videos. It just made me sick to watch. That’s why I’m so excited to be on this journey checking out artist that actually, still put their passion and soul into the music. Writing their own lyrics that actually have emotional connections to their life and they can actually relate to it. I’m finding that there are some artists out there that still have that and that makes me so happy to see. It makes my heart smile. Thank you so much for your comment and your support. Nightwish is a band consisting of an extremely talented group of musicians who all play for the song. You will find no egos here. The result is a piece of music where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You have barely scratched the surface of what this band and its individual members can do. You will find that every song is different, and there isn't a bad song in the bunch. I am looking foward to traveling with you as you begin a wonderous and satisfying musical journey.
That’s so amazing to hear. That’s what has gotten me back into checking out artist that I haven’t heard before. I hate the music industry machine that has been pumping out groups and that are manufactured by Suits and not the actual group themselves putting their emotions into writing their own songs and lyrics. I absolutely love groups and even independent films that take their own experiences and put them on paper and really poor their hard into these projects to share with us all. You can tell when somethings been written by the actual performer and when it’s just been manufactured. This group actually has passion And love for the song that they are performing. When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.
There’s a rock Academy? That sounds so amazing. She has a really diverse background in rock. That’s awesome that she gets appeared on a lot of other bands. I think I know she guessed on an Aryeon album. I used to listen to that over and over and over again. She’s really amazing. I can’t wait till check out more of her and this entire group. Enjoyed your introduction to Nightwish and symphonic metal. The organ/pipe structure is a keyboard stand that houses 2 of Tuomas's Korg keyboards. The design is inspired buy the Sibelius monument in Helsinki, Finland. Jean Sbielius is a famous Finnish classical composer and Tuomas is obviously a big fan of his work. Looking forward to watching your journey down the Nightwish rabbit hole and hopefully expanding to include so many other great European bands in this genre like Epica, Blackbriar, and Within Temptation.

Yes, and since he also mentioned Symphony X I'd also add that Floor has performed and collaborated with Russell Allen through Star One/Ayreon as well as her old band Revamp. Also a lesser known fact is that they performed Phantom of the opera together. Sadly only found rather low quality fan-filmed footage of this, still awesome nonetheless since they are my two favourite singers.

The German Wacken Open Air is one of the largest and oldest metal festivals in the world. 85,000 visitors come every year, and another 15,000 visit the village of Wacken. The festival takes place on a former pasture that is now a hay meadow. Hence the bull's skull as the logo, which can be seen on the left in the video.
The organ is fake and hides three keyboards. The orchestra and choir are original recordings that run as a backtrack.
Nightwish is the reference band in symphonic metal. Together with Within Temptation, they established symphonic as an independent subgenre in metal around 2000.
The haunting voice is typical of rock and especially metal. What you mean is the classic singing. This originated at a time when there were no microphones and the singers had to drown out large halls with a loud audience. That's why classical singers sing very accentuated and loudly.
Metal as a whole is dominated by men, but women dominate in symphonic. This is due to the siren sound that is typical of Symphonic.
In ancient times, the two sirens were on the banks of the Strait of Medina, the narrowest point between Sicily and the Italian mainland. And they were ugly monsters that could sing beautifully. But they may also just be an excuse for the treacherous currents, strong winds and rocks in the strait. Similar stories are known from other dangerous places. While Nightwish has sirens or Valkyries (who take the dead heroes to the paradise of Valhalla). This is one of the banshees in metal who announce death and misfortune:

Symphony X is more of a prog metal band, as is Devin Townsend. The Symphonics are influenced by classical music and are therefore typically European. That's why Nightwish fills stadiums in Europe, while in the USA they can only fill medium-sized halls.
Mastermind Tuomas has not explained the content of the text. I suspect that he is breaking off his friendship with the first singer. One year after the release in 2004, she was fired due to personal and artistic differences. The singer here was officially only the temporary replacement at the time. She is now the longest-serving singer.

Awesome I can tell that they have a huge following. Regardless of the organ pipes not being real. They look awesome. I think the look of it is brilliance, even if it’s just keyboards behind it. So Symphony X and Devin Townsend are progressive metal? I guess I’ll have to listen to a lot more to be able to tell the difference but I definitely hear hints of those groups in this song. But I am just a casual listener and I really have no musical experience or knowledge. @@Thetazord In absolute terms it is big, but not in relative terms. I just saw an interview where a Canadian band admired how many well-organized metal festivals there are in Europe. In the summer there is a festival somewhere in Europe every week. They said that this is missing in the US. The infrastructure for metal is better in Europe because there is more interest in the region.

I think that Devin performed with Arjen Anthony Lucassen on one of his Ayreon projects and this singer Floor Jansen has sung on most of his projects, Ayreon and Star One. My favourite of his concerts is Star One 2003 live where Floor and her sister Irene are the only female singers. Plus some great male singers.
Yeah, somebody else had already let me know about that. Ayreon was the group that I was thinking of or trying to think of in this video. I know Devon had worked on that project with a bunch of other amazing artists. I had no idea that she was a part of that album I think somebody said it was called the score? I know it was a green album that I used to listen to all the time by Ayreon. It was so beautiful I couldn’t help but just listen to it on repeat for a long time. I miss that album. Don't expect every song to sound like this. Every song that Nightwish perform is different to all of the others. Lots of different styles but all intrinsically Nightwish.

Symphony X were in the same genre as Nightwish and basically followed them Nightwish are still going strong after 28 years and have a new album out shortly. Nightwish are from Finland, though the singer is Dutch. The singer, Floor Jansen, can do anything from metal screams and growls to Grand opera. All Nightwish songs are different, all are epic.

There are no groups that sound like Nightwish. Despite the many styles Tuomas writes and Nightwish perform, you can always tell it's Nightwish
The closest, I think, is Epica who are another amazing band but still second to Nightwish.
But you have only heard 15-20% of what Floor and Nightwish can do - and then there is Nightwish with the former female leads, Annette and before her Tarya.
I say female because up to three years ago they also had a malemlead (who you saw playing bass here), Marco Hietala.
You need to go into this warren and hear them do heavy metal, Celtic folk-rock, power ballads, folk, instrumental masterpieces and works that only live in the special genre called "Nightwish".
A few top favourites (not including my no 1 which should wait for a while):
2. Song of Myself from this Wacken show, which will introduce you to Marco
3. 7 Days to the Wolves from Wembley 2015 which is high energy and has Marco and Floor

Aryeon was the group that I was thinking of, but I couldn’t remember in the video. I love that group so much. I’ve only heard one of their albums, but I know that Devin Townsend was on it and Michael Romeo I believe and a lot of others. It was a collective effort by a bunch of different artists coming together to make this album. I’ll have to look up and see what the album was. Symphonic metal that sounds awesome. That’s a great way to describe it. I wonder if Symphony X is under that genres as well. It would make sense that it is. This was an amazing performance and I’m so glad that I got to see this one first. It really surprised meand I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. Your sound was not as terrible as some reactors. It was mostly lacking in the bass region. I hope you can figure it out!
