454 is chevy, 455 is olds and pontiac
Definitely dump that 403. It'd be nice to see a 455 pontiac vs an olds, but both of those are expensive builds.
An Olds 455. The 454 was Chevy. The BOP platform all bolted up n interchanged alind w/Cadillac. If you look, you can find 455 steel cranks. They were in a lot of front wheel drives and jet boats. You'd have a cross country 90mph steady machine if you went with a cheaper LS and 4L60E overdrive trans. There's kits!!! Easy peasy! Keep all orig. drivetrain in a crate out back though!

In 1974 my dad took the 360 in his 4 x 4 and put in a 460 Continental. To pull his 24 foot/7 foot stock trailer fully loaded with cows down to road.🤠🇺🇸
455 Rockett Baby!....
Those 403 Olds have a bad rep but has potential. But yeah, if it's been bored go with a Pontiac V8 since the trans will bolt up and it's what belongs. Still lots of old wagon and sedan 455's around. Or go LS and change the trans. I'm a Poncho fan though. Plenty of 403's around too if you're on a shoe string budget. Just remember resale is stupid hi on that great investment.
79 TA had either a 403 (180 hp) Olds or a 400 (220 hp) Pontiac. Be a purist, put a Pontiac 400 or 455 between the fenders.
Once you get it fixed, watch out for Buford T Justice...😁😁. Sounds like the boring messed up compression and cooling.

had a 72 and 78 trans am, the 72 had a pontiac 400 that spun a rod bearing, bored it out and man was that thing fast, never see the 70-73 ta's for sale.
Just find another Pontiac, or the Oldsmobile 455, because they were always criticizes, and both were definitely performance engines when done correctly, and both are alot stronger than most people realize.

Pontiac had a 455, they also had some factory high flowing heads. IIRC, there were different levels of Ram Air heads. My dad had a 400 Pontiac in a ‘34 Ford. Among other parts, it had a Crane Fireball camshaft that really woke it up and had a very cool loping idle. You have a very nice looking car!
Buy extra tires especially for the rear
The proper term for the engine is "worn out" or "used up".
