Thanks so much for watching everyone! What do you think of "Inferno" as a name for this stunning snake? Don't forget to answer today's Question of the Day!
I love garters I raise Florida Blue and Black Neck (mine are all silver) garters Most of them are also checkered. They have the funniest personalities. absolutely wonderful pet snakes edit: careful with fish. There is a limited list of types of fish garters can eat safely. Stay with Guppies and Tilapia to be safest. Thiaminaise is a protein in most fish that can cause serious ailments and death in garters.
It was absolutely adorable! I wouldn’t mind seeing more time lapses, especially when an animal is new to an enclosure and can be seen exploring everywhere.
QOTD: Lizards are characters, but I prefer to keep snakes. Way less work! I appreciate feeding time being once a week! and there's something magic about snakes- the way they move, their inherent mystique I think. Such special creatures. I am so delighted on your behalf to see you have Red Sided Garters! One of the world's most gorgeous snakes! I will enjoy them vicariously through your videos so please keep us updated.
I love garter snakes! I have a colony of 4 males in a 4ftx2ftx2ft custome made palidarium where they can swim and chase live fish. 1 of my males is a California red sided named Maggot and he is also very feisty and food motivated! His breeder warned me infernalis just tend to be that way lol. Super happy for you and your new baby boy!
That’s so awesome! I’m hoping to incorporate a water feature into my enclosure as well! We’ll see what happens! Yes! Infernalis are hilarious honestly 😅😂!
I personally am a lizard person with 6 myself. I think that they have so much personality, not saying snakes don't. I do have to mention that I have never owned a snake, but wish to have one, in particular a corn snake.
I feel like saying snakes because I really enjoy owning my Florida kingsnake and am so excited to try and breed her! But I definitely have a spot in my heart for lizards. Always love the videos Dayyan!
I have to say snakes because I love my male palmetto cornsnake Casper, he's 8 years old and 4 feet long. red sided garter snakes are beautiful I'm so jealous lol and inferno is a great name, have a nice day.
sylvanite has to be one of if not the coolest name for a pet i've ever heard. what makes it even better is that the nick name is such a cute one: sylvie!. Sylvanite wins best name for sure lol
Congrats on the new addition! Those snakes are beautiful. QOTD: I prefer lizards over snakes personally. I like them both but I think lizards have more personality. I have several lizards and two KSB. Just my opinion and personal experience. Great video! 😊
Inferno and Sylvie are absolutely stunning! As for the question of the day: I personally prefer snakes. I just like the look of them more and find them to be more relaxing to handle. I also really like their “low maintenance” (not to be confused with low effort) care. Also just another thing which you might not like to hear but I think you’ll want to know: frog legs are often harvested extremely inhumane. Most of the time the frogs are wild caught and their legs are cut or ripped off while they are still alive :(. The frog is then thrown away to die. Obviously you should still use the legs you have now but I thought you might want to know for the future. I was really bummed out when I learned about this because I thought I had finally found a way to feed my garters some amphibians.
Thank you so much 🐍! Great choice and thoughts/reasons. Thanks for letting me know! That’s certainly very disturbing! I feel rather conflicted because tbh, I’d prefer to feed them something healthy rather than offer lots of rodents when someone is going to buy the frog legs regardless… tough for sure. Not a nice pickle to be stuck in.
Maybe with the increase in reptile food companies, someone will start breeding feeder frogs. Then the legs for one type of reptile, the rest of the frog for another, ethically raised and killed, like mice, rats, and insects are in companies supported by the reptile community. It would also lead to healthier frogs for feeding, since it would be a captive setting that could seek to avoid parasites and whatnot.
We got ourself a big garter project. Lake chapala from a garbage breeder. Bought 3, first didn't even made it thru the night. One that needs to be force fed and one doing ok. Took 2 more of their siblings in from someone else. Now we have 3 doing great and one that seems to need to be fed against her will forever. But all are very active goofy ladies. They love to hunt their fish. And yes, we provide B1.
Also, don’t know if you are interested, but my exotic vet told me a few months ago that he just studied on the Thamnophis species and he figured out that saltwater fish can cause kindey damage to garters. They still have salt in them so that causes the kidney to shut down in a closer time. Thats what he told me. Hope you read this and it made sense as I explained😊 love your channel❤
Just a heads up, if those gutted silversides are smelt, you need to give thiamine supplements since they do contain thiaminase . Back in my younger days a bag of frozen smelt was like 50cents we used a lot of it to feed snakes and fish since it was a cheap something I could afford in high school. I did have an electric catfish develop neurological problems when this made a bulk of his diet.. Nobody knew this back in the sixties ! I haven't seem it sold in our Florida supermarkets lately but it used to show up during "snow bird season".
Thanks for the shoutout! Infernalis are just so dang pretty! I remember having a garter as my very first pet... unfortunately it was about 1990 and didn't end well with the kind of care you would expect back then (dreaded heat rock and all) :s
Hey Dayyan! It's always fun seeing your animals! To answer your question, Lizards are by far my favorite! I am actually working on a bioactive 4x2x2 for my Crestie!
I love CRSG even though they are so musky until they get used to you. You might already know this but in case you don’t, washing your hands with white vinegar with get rid of that nasty smell…thank God! For the QOTD, I have both snakes and lizards but honestly I can’t decide which is my fave. They are all just so much fun
FRIENDS! I love their little faces so much. Garter Snakes always look so friendly to me. They are very curious and even if skittish, if you approach a wild one slowly, they might come closer themselves to see what's up with you
I’ve only ever been able to keep lizards since my parents wont allow snakes. That said, I think snakes have a cool factor that lizards can’t compete with, but lizards are more interesting to interact with.
I love lizards and tortoises!!! I’ve watched all the reptile channels for several years but snakes still make me a little nervous 😬😬. The thought of a snake biting me still gets me a tad hesitant. I don’t know why it’s just snakes, because lizards can bite too and I’ve been bitten by one. Haha
I have to go with lizards, but that could change! Specifically, I've fallen in love with skinks. I have a fire skink named Sweettart, and she is by far the best behaved animal I own. She even goes out on car rides with me! That being said, I have also found a love for rat snakes, and would love to have some one day.
I've always been a bit more of a lizard guy, but i do love my snakes. my Argentine tegu is probably the reason I love lizards, his names Lionel and he sits on my lap munching on a carrot while i watch tv ,love him.

I love your channel so much by the way, your a huge inspiration to me and other reptile lovers! Everytime you review or get a new reptile I feel like I have to get it or learn about it! Love what you do for the hobby man, keep up the great work!
I love the fact that someone else’s garter is feisty!😂 everyone’s I see is so calm, and when I take out mine he just musks and bites lol. And I don’t really know how he could be tamed🙂
I think red sided garters are my favorite reptile of all they are so pretty and I think I like snakes and lizards I don't favor one or the other I love them both
well I love lizards! but theres several breeds of small snakes like corn snakes and vine snakes...... we have those here and I love watching them its so cool and they are harmless :)
These are beautiful! FYI: firstly, I've never owned any garter.. ever. I have watched a snake discovery video before where someone only fed their garter fish, worms etc. and their garter started displaying neurological issues and it ended up being because of calcium deficiency and it also had to do with the fish having too much thiaminaise that the harter just couldnt handle. Emily had figured this out and the garter began acting like a regular garter agian. So she would feed it rodents here and there instead of none or ever like the previous owner ( the owner didn't want to have a snake where they didnt have to feed rodents). Just wanted to mention it and if someone oy feeds their garters fish, worms etc. But, this could have just been that particular garter as well. But like I said before, I've never owned one so I'm obviously not experienced in any way but wanted to mention it so hopefully it could potentially prevent someone having issues with their baby. Have a great day!
I don't keep any reptiles currently, although I have in the past. I personally find lizards more interesting in general. There's so much variety and so many amazing different shapes/sizes/etc. For all that, I might just like snakes more. If and when I get back to keeping reptiles, there are several snakes that have my attention.
I think I prefer lizards, mostly because of husbandry. I'd rather feed off bugs and fruit/veggies than mice and rats....but that's just my preference ❤
QTD. I prefer lizards to snakes. I find them less intimidating and scary. I'm afraid of snakes although I really enjoy watching professionals handle them, I guess they fascinate me because they are interesting and some are beautiful too. 😊 I like the name Inferno for your new snake.
That’s totally fair! I think snakes sometimes get a bad rep but certainly, to each their own! I do really love lizards as well 😅🦎🙏🏼 but I also have a very large spot in my heart reserved for snakes and love mine all very much! Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching!
Thanks so much! Honestly, I prefer their look over the Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia just because I really like the black lateral bands too for pattern/contrast!
For the question, I can't really choose but maybe lizards? My dream reptile is a tegu. I love these snakes, seeing them in the wild at my first job was amazing. The redwood forests they live in are beautiful.
Love snakes and I want another one but for now I like lizzards better , I do want a garder snake like that beautiful striped one thanx for a great video !!!!
Really depends on the species for me, but I think I prefer snakes ever so slightly. Just something about the way they move and interact with everything
I love both snakes and lizards but I am more of a snake-guy. I don't have a lot, but I breed ball pythons. Also have a hognose and a corn snake. 15 snakes right now. I have a scorpion, tarantula, veiled chameleon, a crested and a leopard gecko, a mantis, pet mice, multible species of feeder insects. Also I am picking up a pair of rough scaled sandboas on saturday
So cute! I prefer lizards as we don’t have snakes in NZ, but I fell in love with skinks as a kid. I have a question, will you leave the worm in Silver Night’s enclosure so she can eat when she wants, or take it out and try again another time?
Hey Dion I haven’t seen your geckos being fed for a while! 😂 Answer to question: lizards. That’s my first ever video of watching someone making snake enclosure and even handling.
Personally, I prefer the interactivity and intelligence displayed by lizards, specifically monitor lizards. However, I do enjoy snakes on their own merits, and it's not to say they don't display their own types of intelligence.
I like lizards the best. I have a gargoyle as a pet. Garter snakes are my favorite species of snakes and I have had positive experiences with wild ones. What I'm curious about is does the social aspects of this snake effect how they interact with humans? I saw somewhere if you hand a garter to a friend,it will track you. Have you noticed this? I'm really fascinated by them.
Thanks for sharing! Tbh, I’m not sure. I’ve seen a few friends who keep communal garters that still seem to come out and take food, etc. They don’t seem too phased if I had to guess!
Love garters. Very underrated. And i think the San Francisco Red Sided Garters are actually endangered in the wild. But Are you not using thermostats in their temporary enclosures?
I used a temperature gun to measure the temp and make sure it’s good. For this enclosure it should be just fine! I wouldn’t risk that with a heat pad but for this low watt bulb and enough space for a good gradient I’m not worried!
Beautiful! I just got a garter snake as well. Are silversides the same as smelt? My mom feeds our dogs raw and we have about 10 lbs of smelt in our freezer.
Hey, I know that you have experience with tree monitors and was wondering if I should get one. I have done research and on clints video about them, he said that they weren't good pets. What's your thoughts?

I'm really fascinated by them.
Thanks for sharing! Tbh, I’m not sure. I’ve seen a few friends who keep communal garters that still seem to come out and take food, etc. They don’t seem too phased if I had to guess!
@@Reptiliatus Ok,thanks. Would you do lots of follow upa on these snakes, especially personalities?
Team snakes👇
Saw one of these in my backyard a few days ago(Northern California)
No way! How fortunate! Great to know your yard is conducive to their thriving!
Lizards are a bit more fun to watch, snakes are more fun to handle
Thanks for sharing! Great points!
A couple of years ago i would have said snakes but lizards have really began grow on me
Very cool! Thanks for sharing! 😎🦎👌🏼
I prefer lizards, specifically geckos. I have a soft spot for New Caledonian geckos especially :)
Awesome choice! Thanks for watching!
QOTD: Lizards, I feel like they seem to be a bit more responsive overall to human interaction? Inferno is a cool name.
Awesome! Makes sense! 🦎✨
Beautiful! I just got a garter snake as well. Are silversides the same as smelt? My mom feeds our dogs raw and we have about 10 lbs of smelt in our freezer.
I think they are but I could be wrong. Similar none the less
can you do a mbk setup? i dont know if you’re still keeping kira in the bin or not but i would like to see a more in depth tutorial
Yes! I’m actually going to be showing that in the next few weeks as Ciara is being upgraded into a fairly large enclosure!
Definitely snakes because I'm terrified of bugs and touching bugs. Warms are okay because I grew up fishing but bugs nope.
That’s fair! Thanks for sharing!
MORE SABZY PLEASEEEE
You got it! 🦎✨
So beautiful, I wanna have snakes becouse this!
Thank you so much! You'll love them!
Ugh I'm so 😞 disappointed (BC,Canada 🇨🇦) here can't have garter snakes 😒 enjoy them for me ❤
Yea I know, so sad :(! Thank you! 😅
Hey, I know that you have experience with tree monitors and was wondering if I should get one. I have done research and on clints video about them, he said that they weren't good pets. What's your thoughts?
