      itzamar julian My husband and I have a Apbt, she is 4 months old. We got her at 3 months. Within the first week she learned her name, the word no, come, and how to use the potty pad. Within the 2nd week she learned stay, lay down, get off, get up, go eat, and bring it. She is also very affectionate, playful, and vocal to what she wants. You have to be loving, but firm from day one. Consistency is key. Also keeping them active, and mentally challenged. They are stubborn, but they are also willing to please. Stay consistent and you will have a stubborn but happy and obedient doggy.

      You most likely have a BBM, not an APBT.
      Purebred APBT are quite rare, and aren't found in shelters often.
      Red nose and blue nose are backyard breeder terms for their mutts.
      They're not APBTs no matter how much they say they are.

      Not for the young? I had two pitbulls at my house one belonged to my dad and the other one was mines. Remember my dad told me that he would get it for me on Christmas and that I had to take 100% responsibility of it I kept asking him for one for the longest time until my dad finally said yes. His name was big boss. We were always together around the time I boxed, played soccer, and wrestled. So every morning at 6am and at night we would always go jogging a good 4 and even sometimes 6 miles and he loved it so much he would get so excited. We both got our exercise and it allowed me to go for runs alone without my parents feeling worried about me. I miss him a lot he was my best friend and he always made me happy and feel so alive. He had tons of energy and as a very athletic teenager I was also super energetic. We just matched energy so much and were so happy together. I miss him RIP Big Boss

      Ive had my APB for 8 years now, and he got attacked by another dog awhile back. I started cuddling and being more emotional wjth him more after that, and I noticed more protective behavior from him...things he never did before like bark at a stranger walking by etc. I have always consistently continued training him, but I couldn't quell his new odd behaviors. I got a new trainer and worked on obedience training and he said to not be emotional etc. Well...kicked him off the couch, outta bed, and placed more rules in the house. His behavior instantly changed back to normal. Love him to death, so happy that he's back to normal.

    This is, by far, the best and authentic portrayal of the APBT. Great job on keeping it real and pointing out not only the good, but the “bad” to owning an APBT, for example: that most are dog aggressive and that they’re a “handful” and not for beginners. I adopted mine 4 months ago and he’s awesome. Super affectionate, great with kids and people and needs lots of activity. So easy to train. Had one accident the first day we got him and none since. He’s great around other dogs as well however, he’s shown at the dog park that if a dog starts a scuffle, he won’t back down and will get into it, yet he proved that he respects me as his pack leader because he quit and submitted as soon as I called his name, though admittedly, it took him a few seconds. To be fair, two other dogs at the dog park jumped in to the mix after the first dog turned on mine while he was drinking water. The other dogs owner said that her lab “bullies” other dogs that try to drink from the community water fountain (and in my opinion, that dog doesn’t need to be around the water fountain or at the dog park, period). When the lab turned on mine, my dog protected himself and others got adrenalised and joined in the fight so for my dog to stop on command at all is admirable. Once the dogs were separated and calmed down, (I put mine on leash and sat at a picnic table across the park to calm him down), that same black lab ran up to us and latched on to my dogs neck! My dog obeyed and didn’t retaliate. If the lab would not have let go on his own, I was going to drop the leash and let my dog protect himself. Thank goodness I didn’t need to do that because I’m afraid my dog could really hurt another, if needed. That debunks the “all pits are killers” nonsense. Ive seen more aggressive black labs at the dog park than pits and there are a good handful of pits that regularly go to the dog park.

    • @jasonjames4254

      Great post! It should be noted that you have an EXCEPTIONAL Pit. Most Pits do NOT respond the way yours does. There are FAR too many irresponsible and unknowledgeable large breed dog owners. These are always the first ones to take their dogs to the dog park, or allow them to be walked by a little girl who has no real control over the animal.

    • @lexb575

      Very true. Bully breeds are so loving but with any dog (even small dogs) you need to be the leader. Many owners fail at this and that is why there are so many dog attacks. Almost never are pit attacks. My collie is huge and stubborn. She chews on rabbit heads and I have to pry her mouth open. Pits are very sweet.

    I agree, but pitbulls can teach you a lot. I have no problem if beginners own a pitbull but they have to be committed and do their research.
    Also, I'm in early highschool and my pitbull is totally fine respite the fact that she was previously abused and very reactive so I don't agree that you have to be older to own a APBT (although it does help).

    I don't like to see real APBT's being used for anything to do with protection work or anything to do with biting humans, as I think it goes directly against 100's of years breeding and the breeds temperament. I know times have changed, but imo the reason we love APBT's and our working SBT's so much is because they were bred not to bite humans and to me if you rear/breed away from that you loose what's so special about them. Lovely dog in the video and love to see the real APBT being showed love. Keep it up. Love from UK 🇬🇧

    • @debodevil6974
      @debodevil6974 7 років тому +18

      Fractal Universe imo when you take advantage of a bulldogs drive just to bite humans you make it no different than Mastiff, Presa, Cane and all the other man eaters. Here in the U.K you had dogmen that had yards but a lot of men had dogs that were family pets that they took to the pub at a weekend just for entertainment so biting humans just wasn't what they wanted or tolerated. Dog fighting back then was a lot more than throwing 2 dogs to go at each other. The rituals in boxing were mirrored in dog fighting and played a big part in the "sport". Even the men with yards that had the odd dog that was a handful and did bite, they didn't want that in there dogs and if the dog wasn't winner it wouldn't be given yard space. Like I said, times have changed, but to me I think there's better uses for bulldogs than taking advantage of there nature to bite humans. Just my opinion

    I hate how people generalize all blocky head dogs as pit bulls. So many mixed breeds can have square faces depending on what it's mixed with. My dog is a black lab boxer mix but has a blocky face because of the boxer and he's constantly getting judged by it and so am I. I don't even attempt to take him to dog parks even though he's dog friendly because he's a rough player and I don't want someone freaking thinking he's attacking their dog. I Like pits and have nothing against them. I just wish there wasn't so much ignorance of the breed

My family breeds (purebred, apri registered) ridgebacks, and almost every one of our dogs are huge compared to the standard. The largest male weighed 100lbs at 8 months. No mixing whatsoever. But when you breed large dogs to large dogs, you end up with larger puppies. Similar to how we've bred such small chihuahuas.

      @TheGoodChap 6 років тому +8

      You also have to get one that has less of the dog aggressive trait. There's Pitts that have lower aggressiveness, but that's probably because they were not bred for fighting. There are dogs that have a significant enough amount of that genetic to be born with the trait to want to fight other dogs. And you can't fully train that out of one which has it. It's like saying you have a German Shepherd that's not meant for sheep herding, but if you drop it in a pen with sheep at 6 months there's a 50 50 chance it might have the trait and start immediately herding the sheep even though it's never seen one in it's life before to that point. Look up German Shepherd herding instinct test. These are dogs that have never seen herding before in their life or even sheep.
      I have an american pit bull terrier who looks almost pure bred, and he may be, but he's extremely good with other dogs and I'm very comfortable with him playing with and meeting dogs wherever I am partly due to him having been socialized a lot growing up before I got him at the kennel. However I could have gotten less lucky, and if I had 100% been convinced that I could train it out I could have gotten into a lot of trouble.

    Tired of people who can't admit that real pitbulls are naturally aggressive to other animals. I've grown up with several pitbulls and sure some of them turned out to be lower energy and docile around other dogs but for the most part they become extremely aggressive around any other dogs. Usually calm around people and don't get nervous or rowdy when greeted with unfamiliar faces. People who refuse to accept this are the reason shit happens in public I've had instances with morons letting little kids walk their pitbulls and when they run into me walking mine that child can't hold onto the leash so now we have to separate two equally strong dogs who want to kill each other. It's so common, the amount of morons who own this breed which is such a bummer! Most people should stick to lap dogs if they're to emotional to accept the truth and become responsible owners. That's why I have much respect for this man who keeps it real! He's from LA so surely he's seen dumbass owners, here in Chicago we see that too.

      Well said. My dog was killed by a pittbull who broke out of a window from a second story house. I couldn't believe my eyes what I was seeing, in seconds she was jumping all over me trying to get my dog. She snatched her off my arms and killed her like nothing. Later I found out she had a history of agression including attacking 2 other little dogs and one of them died. Now the owner is facing several charges. I kinda feel bad for him but at the same time I don't want anyone else to be a victim. Unfortunately some ppl only learn once they are fined or jailed. He should have put that dog to sleep after the first kill. Oh and he is the kind of owner who keeps their animals confined. They gave up on walking her because she would drag.

      First off, I don't believe any dog should be put down. I wish people would actually research on what they are getting into. People will get an APBT just cause it looks cute or looks badass, but don't know anything. They were bred to be game dogs, just because people make them house pets and had no problems doesn't mean they lose their aggression. It's in their genetics and pitbulls isn't a breed. They were made from the strength of the bulldogs and the craziness of the terriers.

      TheAustinTessaDutchie almost none of those dogs are actual pit bulls there's your explanation. When you take high drive dogs with a lot of aggression towards specific things (like other dogs) and breed dogs that should be culled then you get aggressive dogs. That along with people thinking the dog will put up with their kids hitting it, people not taking precautions to keep the dog away from other dogs and getting bit while breaking up a fight, people breeding nervous dogs, and socialization, people not giving high drive bull breed mutts the proper stimulation, people who own these bull breed mutts also tend to be purely positive which will get you nowhere with most aggressive dogs, plenty of reasons for those maulings and none of them is human aggression from real APBT

    If you're looking to get an APBT the biggest factor you need to understand is, you need to make tons of time for them. I mean walks every morning and night.. that's everyday, not once or twice a week. They need to burn off their energy (which they have an unlimited amount of lol) but if you can't walk them everyday and every night, then please do not get one.. They "WILL" have behavioral problems, whether that's peeing inside or being hyper aggressive at people who they see walking by the house or people who knock. They get these aggressive actions you may call it when they don't burn off their energy. It's almost like an idle hand is the devil's playground.. they're just like the most add child out there. If they don't burn of that energy they become a nuicence (or however you spell it) and start getting into trouble but doggie trouble which is ten times worse because they can cause ten times the damage and as they get older that will follow them into adulthood and will then become natural and you won't be able to break them from it and if it's something like dog aggression. There's no helping them come out of that. It's the sad truth. That's why u gotta follow certain guidelines when getting a dog like an APBT because they're completely different then owning most other dogs..

    4:55 FYI everyone, that is not a starved dog. That's a worked dog, that is ripped. That's what an in shape Pit is supposed to look like. That dog exercises and is def on a diet. That is a properly fed, properly exercised Pit. Good on you for whoever takes the time to work and condition that dog. He is perfect. 6:36 your dog is probably game, aka high prey drive. Not necessarily meaning the dog is from fighting stock, just means your dog is more animal reactive. However, cops and military look for game dogs because they never give up. I own and rehabbed a fighting type ('game type') male APBT and is it NOT like taking 3 of my past dogs through CGC certification. Any dog that guards or fights is NOT for most any ordinary owner. Owner bluffing means the dog will be abandoned in a shelter or destroyed outright. And it is a legal liability ... the OWNER is responsible for any damage a dog does. That's the law.

    We have a pittie, I call him an American Staffordshire Terrier mix. He came to us through fostering, then we adopted him. He is about 6 months old now. When he came into our home there was zero aggression toward our other dog and our cat. Zero. He goes to the dog park every morning-he is doing really well. He has learned to be a dog. Again, no aggression. Everyone at the park loves him. We are kind toward our animals, and we the people in the family are the lead dogs. When dogs are led by confidence and kindness they respond really well. He is very affectionate and loving. He loves to be loved. Our other dog, a large Lab mix loves him too. Also, his ears are not clipped. I really don't understand clipping ears and tails to satisfy man's standards. Let the animals alone, let them be natural. They are beautiful as they are.

    Why do people hate on owners who crop thier dogs ears?!?! Would you say anything if I told you I had my son clipped when he was born?!?! Its a preference. If it doesn't effect you. Let it be.

    Our pitty plays with my ferrets, shes gentle with them but would never leave them unattended. She also gets along with other dogs. She behaves extremely well at the dog park around people and dogs but at home if she hears or sees someone around the house, she gets very aggressive. Must be a territorial thing. Dogs are like people, each one has it's own personality and traits. I've never had a more loving dog than our pit.

      Its probably a pitbull terrier with low pray drive could exist. My mate had a apbt that just chases rabbits and doesn't attack them.

    People in general dont understand the pitbull. Basically it is an intense dog. It loves people and hates dogs and animals of any type in general. As a guard dog, great against animals, horrible against people. But, if you have two or more and go into the woods, you have no worries.

    Every time I watch this I just appreciate the breed more and always want to go on a date with this man and do dog sports together. I love his transparency, honesty, and his authenticity that help him and his dog thrive, which benefits him and his dog and helps represent the breed in a lucrative and proactive way.

    The real APBT is like a taller SBT.I would have an APBT in a heartbeat but they are a banned breed in Scotland.I have the perfect life-style for an APBT as I walk my Staffie between 10-20 miles every day.

    Got my APBT at 6 weeks old (too early) and have been socializing him since 8 weeks. He's currently 17 weeks and hasn't seen a person or a dog he didn't want to greet. At the dog park he's fairly submissive, but has defended himself from time to time when treated roughly by other dogs. Only a couple times have I seen him be the aggressor and I shut that down immediately. I can echo, it takes LOTS of training and attention, but the result has been that our JaiDee is the best behaved and most loving dog I've ever owned, and better than pretty much any dog owned by family or friends. I wouldn't say a newbie shouldn't own an APBT ... I'd say somebody who isn't committed to training and socializing their dog shouldn't own one. But for that matters, nobody should own a dog if they aren't willing to put in the time.

    I first heard of these dogs in the 1990s, as my friend and first employer began to crusade against these dogs. I was not then a "Dog person" so I did not pay much attention. SINCE 2003 I was adopted by a dog whom looked like a Pit. She was a well behaved good friend, when I needed one. She only sometimes made trouble to dogs larger than her. She died in Aug. 2015. In final analysis, she was said to be Shar-pei/Lab. Other Pits I met all seemed nice, not bad dogs. Most well-kept dogs have friendly temperaments. People would get annoyed with me as I made friends with their Pits. My friend's ex-wife has one who seems really lightly built. She gets along with his two yappers and a housecat .
