A real American Pitbull Terrier is not a breed for the uninitiated. The breed requires a massive amount of understanding, activity, and supervision. Hai Truong is an excellent example of a good Pitbull owner.
In this episode of All About Living With The Real American Pitbull Terrier,Hai and his boy Wes live an active and engaged life. Not only does Wes exercised several times a day he's also trains in the canine sport of French Ring.
Wes is Hai's third indoor pet Pitbull, making Hai an experienced and careful owner. He has learned to identify not only his dog's behavior but the behavioral cues from other animals and people as well.
Owning a real American Pitbull Terrier is a chore but the love your pitbull gives you will pay you back tenfold.

itzamar julian My husband and I have a Apbt, she is 4 months old. We got her at 3 months. Within the first week she learned her name, the word no, come, and how to use the potty pad. Within the 2nd week she learned stay, lay down, get off, get up, go eat, and bring it. She is also very affectionate, playful, and vocal to what she wants. You have to be loving, but firm from day one. Consistency is key. Also keeping them active, and mentally challenged. They are stubborn, but they are also willing to please. Stay consistent and you will have a stubborn but happy and obedient doggy.

You most likely have a BBM, not an APBT.
Purebred APBT are quite rare, and aren't found in shelters often.
Red nose and blue nose are backyard breeder terms for their mutts.
They're not APBTs no matter how much they say they are.

Not for the young? I had two pitbulls at my house one belonged to my dad and the other one was mines. Remember my dad told me that he would get it for me on Christmas and that I had to take 100% responsibility of it I kept asking him for one for the longest time until my dad finally said yes. His name was big boss. We were always together around the time I boxed, played soccer, and wrestled. So every morning at 6am and at night we would always go jogging a good 4 and even sometimes 6 miles and he loved it so much he would get so excited. We both got our exercise and it allowed me to go for runs alone without my parents feeling worried about me. I miss him a lot he was my best friend and he always made me happy and feel so alive. He had tons of energy and as a very athletic teenager I was also super energetic. We just matched energy so much and were so happy together. I miss him RIP Big Boss

This is, by far, the best and authentic portrayal of the APBT. Great job on keeping it real and pointing out not only the good, but the “bad” to owning an APBT, for example: that most are dog aggressive and that they’re a “handful” and not for beginners. I adopted mine 4 months ago and he’s awesome. Super affectionate, great with kids and people and needs lots of activity. So easy to train. Had one accident the first day we got him and none since. He’s great around other dogs as well however, he’s shown at the dog park that if a dog starts a scuffle, he won’t back down and will get into it, yet he proved that he respects me as his pack leader because he quit and submitted as soon as I called his name, though admittedly, it took him a few seconds. To be fair, two other dogs at the dog park jumped in to the mix after the first dog turned on mine while he was drinking water. The other dogs owner said that her lab “bullies” other dogs that try to drink from the community water fountain (and in my opinion, that dog doesn’t need to be around the water fountain or at the dog park, period). When the lab turned on mine, my dog protected himself and others got adrenalised and joined in the fight so for my dog to stop on command at all is admirable. Once the dogs were separated and calmed down, (I put mine on leash and sat at a picnic table across the park to calm him down), that same black lab ran up to us and latched on to my dogs neck! My dog obeyed and didn’t retaliate. If the lab would not have let go on his own, I was going to drop the leash and let my dog protect himself. Thank goodness I didn’t need to do that because I’m afraid my dog could really hurt another, if needed. That debunks the “all pits are killers” nonsense. Ive seen more aggressive black labs at the dog park than pits and there are a good handful of pits that regularly go to the dog park.

    • @jasonjames4254

Great post! It should be noted that you have an EXCEPTIONAL Pit. Most Pits do NOT respond the way yours does. There are FAR too many irresponsible and unknowledgeable large breed dog owners. These are always the first ones to take their dogs to the dog park, or allow them to be walked by a little girl who has no real control over the animal.

I don't like to see real APBT's being used for anything to do with protection work or anything to do with biting humans, as I think it goes directly against 100's of years breeding and the breeds temperament. I know times have changed, but imo the reason we love APBT's and our working SBT's so much is because they were bred not to bite humans and to me if you rear/breed away from that you loose what's so special about them. Lovely dog in the video and love to see the real APBT being showed love. Keep it up. Love from UK 🇬🇧

    • @debodevil6974
      @debodevil6974 6 років тому +18

Fractal Universe imo when you take advantage of a bulldogs drive just to bite humans you make it no different than Mastiff, Presa, Cane and all the other man eaters. Here in the U.K you had dogmen that had yards but a lot of men had dogs that were family pets that they took to the pub at a weekend just for entertainment so biting humans just wasn't what they wanted or tolerated. Dog fighting back then was a lot more than throwing 2 dogs to go at each other. The rituals in boxing were mirrored in dog fighting and played a big part in the "sport". Even the men with yards that had the odd dog that was a handful and did bite, they didn't want that in there dogs and if the dog wasn't winner it wouldn't be given yard space. Like I said, times have changed, but to me I think there's better uses for bulldogs than taking advantage of there nature to bite humans. Just my opinion

When he came into our home there was zero aggression toward our other dog and our cat. Zero. He goes to the dog park every morning-he is doing really well. He has learned to be a dog. Again, no aggression. Everyone at the park loves him. We are kind toward our animals, and we the people in the family are the lead dogs. When dogs are led by confidence and kindness they respond really well. He is very affectionate and loving. He loves to be loved. Our other dog, a large Lab mix loves him too. Also, his ears are not clipped. I really don't understand clipping ears and tails to satisfy man's standards. Let the animals alone, let them be natural. They are beautiful as they are.

Can be a handful especially in the puppy years, but once they learn what you want and how to behave, they are the best addition to a family. My kids love our terriers now and the dogs are super protective over them.

My own dog from a shelter (fairly near the Michael Vick fiasco) it turns out is a 'game type' dog and looks almost identical to the one shown. I did not realize it until I saw my dog fight and go after certain other dogs. 2 rehabbers showed and explained that my dog is not a regular APBT and his rehab has helped me love him enough to handle him as an animal that needs to have a job. His is 'retrieve' and follow commands.

This looks identical to my dog. I've never met a more intense dog before in my life. She tries to take on horses when we cross them on our hikes and just the other day two coyotes tried attacking her and my other dog and she flipped the script and started going after them. I actually got afraid for the coyotes. They have amazing confidence.

Very true. Bully breeds are so loving but with any dog (even small dogs) you need to be the leader. Many owners fail at this and that is why there are so many dog attacks. Almost never are pit attacks. My collie is huge and stubborn. She chews on rabbit heads and I have to pry her mouth open. Pits are very sweet.

10:28 "I do not recommend a beginner owning an APBT."
I agree, but pitbulls can teach you a lot. I have no problem if beginners own a pitbull but they have to be committed and do their research.
Also, I'm in early highschool and my pitbull is totally fine respite the fact that she was previously abused and very reactive so I don't agree that you have to be older to own a APBT (although it does help).

I’ve rescued purebred and mixed breed APBTs for 30yrs. My most recent purebred (DNA tested) is just like this guys dog, he looks like APBTs are supposed to look = agile, athletic, not overly bulky. There are so many badly bred “purebreds” that are actually mixed with breeds to make them bigger or more bulky, but they lose the amazing athletic ability. There is also unfortunately a lot of bad breeders who inbreed them. Ppl often think my purebred is a mix, because ppl don’t know what real APBTs look like. They are a breed that loves to work!! They will try to help you with everything. Training and giving them a job of some kind is key. My Presa/Pit is an amazing therapy dog, my 2 younger ones (purebred and APBT/Boxer) are into rally/obedience. They are amazing at obedience, sports etc. My first dog did horse jumping courses and rock climbing. They also make me feel safe in my house too. You have to know dog language/behavior to best understand and train an APBT. They’re very sensitive and smart, they can easily out smart and pick up bad habits from a beginner. If you’re anxious, they will be too. Anxiety leads to aggression for all breeds but these guys are an intense breed in general.

4:55 FYI everyone, that is not a starved dog. That's a worked dog, that is ripped. That's what an in shape Pit is supposed to look like. That dog exercises and is def on a diet. That is a properly fed, properly exercised Pit. Good on you for whoever takes the time to work and condition that dog. He is perfect. 6:36 your dog is probably game, aka high prey drive. Not necessarily meaning the dog is from fighting stock, just means your dog is more animal reactive. However, cops and military look for game dogs because they never give up. Same reason why Search & Rescue also use them.

I hate how people generalize all blocky head dogs as pit bulls. So many mixed breeds can have square faces depending on what it's mixed with. My dog is a black lab boxer mix but has a blocky face because of the boxer and he's constantly getting judged by it and so am I. I don't even attempt to take him to dog parks even though he's dog friendly because he's a rough player and I don't want someone freaking thinking he's attacking their dog. I Like pits and have nothing against them. I just wish there wasn't so much ignorance of the breed

She was 4 days old and was from an abandoned litter. I had no idea what breed she was but as soon as her features developed, I found out that she is 1/2 Lab abd 1/2 APBT. Bailey has the body, tail, and fur of a lab with the coloring, face, ears, stalky-ness, and temperament of a Pit. She is 12 now and i love her to pieces!!!

Got my APBT at 6 weeks old (too early) and have been socializing him since 8 weeks. He's currently 17 weeks and hasn't seen a person or a dog he didn't want to greet. At the dog park he's fairly submissive, but has defended himself from time to time when treated roughly by other dogs. Only a couple times have I seen him be the aggressor and I shut that down immediately. I can echo, it takes LOTS of training and attention, but the result has been that our JaiDee is the best behaved and most loving dog I've ever owned, and better than pretty much any dog owned by family or friends. I wouldn't say a newbie shouldn't own an APBT ... I'd say somebody who isn't committed to training and socializing their dog shouldn't own one. But for that matters, nobody should own a dog if they aren't willing to put in the time.

You can have purebred dogs that are monsters compared to the breed standard. My family breeds (purebred, apri registered) ridgebacks, and almost every one of our dogs are huge compared to the standard. The largest male weighed 100lbs at 8 months. No mixing whatsoever. But when you breed large dogs to large dogs, you end up with larger puppies. Similar to how we've bred such small chihuahuas.

I go for temperament and energy level when choosing a pet-quality APBT. I lucked out with my first. She was a gorgeous little 'street dog" I got from the shelter. Medium energy, but could turn it up to 11 and back again in an instant. She was never dog-aggressive, but she was no shrinking violet, either. The most interesting thing was that she somehow knew 'rodent' from all other animals...she was as agreeable as they come until it came to rodents... and then it was 'game on.' Best dog I've ever had or known.
