- 'Yes, We Can, Yes We Do'. The National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) was founded in 1973 but Ben Finley and Art Clay, the two gentlemen to be the first African Americans inducted in the skiing and snowboarding hall of Fame! Listen to them share their stories from Sun Valley Ski Resort, home to America's first chair lift, in Sun Valley/Ketchum, Idaho. Feel what it's like to fly down Baldy Mountain on a Toboggan. Watch and listen as several NBS members share their stories of lining life in spite of the decades-long stereotype 'Black folks don't ski'. Yes, we can and yes, we do.

Started skiing while living in Chicago's cold and was on my first time trying cross country skiing.

@@choski76 Er' body was up in there! haha. Costs must be covered, therefore certain events might be for folks who paid the NBS summit fee. A lot fo the fee actually goes towards raising funds to provide underprivileged PC folks opportunities to learn how to ski. One of the main goals is to diversify the demographic of skiers in the Olympics. Donations are accepted www.nbs.org. It is encouraged that folks become actual members partially for this reason and partly because it is a year-round effort which costs need to be covered. EVeryone's participation is paramount. For those who haven't yet become members, yes they may join in on the parties and such, though there may be a fee for certain events if they don't already have an NBS summit badge. Much like entering into a nightclub but different from tryna get into something exclusive. NBS is NOT exclusive they just as for folks to contribute fairly.
This is where I took my first real ski lesson! Sun Valley is also home (not only to America's first chair lift, but to the film #SunValleySerenade
I just came across this group and I really love the message. I’m curious as to how many younger generation participants there are. Or if there is different chapters closer to where I stay. Love that there’s plenty of other black people who love the snow!
Yes! There are young members as well, one if which I interviewed he was in his late 20s or maybe 30/31 years old. There are a few who are being groomed as Olympic hopefuls. There are ski clubs within nbs all over the us and in Europe. I am not sure if outside of that yet but always room to grow. Where are you based
Yes there are younger participants. they are advocating for even more as there is room for growth, awareness and community. There are clubs ALL OVER including outside of the USA. If you don't mind my baking, where do you live/where are you based? I can connect you with a group there or at least point you in their direction (if you haven't found them already). HAHAAAA they jsut has the summit in Vail this past Feb. It's moves to different locations each year, and the local clubs host events throughout the season.

Stares looks and glares... My God can we get past that people??? How many voices have been silenced because of stares looks and glares? I know that my bag of fun, people pleasing, fun escalating, rip shredding, carving tricks has been greatly diminished by people that stare look and glare. Please let voices be heard in the ski, snowboard and winter sports community. Perhaps your skiing or riding will improve. That is what we are all looking for isn't it?
