Great video, the fact that I came here only after looking at tons of reviews about X13 just shows me that UA-cam algorithm really doesn't work in favor of smaller creators no matter how much work and effort they put on specific product.
I will do fan filter mod, I always clean out laptops every 6 months. The mesh looks highly restrictive. Mod easily reversable. CPU tdp tweak to 20w, tent mode. Job done. Very nice guide.
cool that u could improve the cooling, but with my device it always hits 60 Watts, when I dial down the CPU TDP, the laptop stays cool enough to maintain this
Sucks it doesn't have vapor chamber, would be much better than the z13 if it doesn. They call this ROG but even the zenbook pro 14 oled with 4070 has more heatpipes in its cooling.
Great video I just tried having this laptop. The small size, build quality and overall design and quality is very good. It has so many good things going for it. But the high pitched loud fan noise.. I can't stand it. I was hoping that having a powerful machine, and then limiting it greatly would reduce the need for much fan noise. But sadly it's doesn't help much, even under moderate load or gaming. Yes I said gaming. Because the one I bought came with a RTX 4070. And that means "yes, this laptop is suitable for gaming!", but the cooling doesn't match up. Well maybe not the cooling itself, because the temps seem ok. But the noise from the cooling.. which kicks in very early and very loud. But it is possible to have it silent in idle mode (browsing, youtube etc.). Anything more than that, the fans kick in.. I really don't think that tweaks like this video would solve my main problem with compact powerful laptops in general. My desktop makes fan noise too under heavy load, but it's a much more calm and low deep sound. Not annoying at all and not high pitched like on many laptops including this one
@@jondonnelly3 Yeah I tried disabling turbo boost all together. That should do the trick at least. Still pretty loud fans under slight load. Maybe my ears are sensitive ;) but I can't stand highpitched fan noise on a computer. Sad because it's a great machine in all other areas
Great video wish you'd kept the Zenbook 14 pro so we could have more head to head videos and see how it held up long term. Also what made you switch as the X13 seems like a downgrade in most aspects?
You're right, the screen is a downgrade and the performance is a downgrade because the cooling and power limits are so much better on the Zenbook Pro Oled. I had to return it because I discovered it had several stuck red pixels, and there was no more in stock at that time. That and I realized I still really prefer having a device that can become a tablet, so when the X13 4070 became available, I had to jump on it.
I have the XG Mobile RTX 4090 attached to my new X13 and it only runs at 120 watts. It's supposed to run at 150 watts and the 4090 clock speeds only run at 1500 Mhz when performing the 3DMark Port Royal benchmark. I'm not sure what the deal is 🤔
Why did you use glue instead of thermal pad/paste for the bottom of the copper heat sink? The adhesive you choose also has a thermal conductivity rating, it's not meant to be used like that. It will negate the benefits of the high thermal conductivity of copper, reducing the benefits greatly. Thermal pad on top should cover the entire heatsink if you want it to connect to your copper spreader.
10:35 Usually, this part doesn't get hot at all as these are intake fans (it exhausts hot air from the rear, or from the top vents if you put it in 'tent mode), it's the area that's right below it that gets really warm when playing etc. I got the same config - 4970hs\32gb\4070 2 days ago, it's a very solid laptop. Initially, I wanted to get the Zenbook Pro 14 at first, but I needed *pen support for notes taking. And now wondering whether I should sell my desktop (R5900x\32GB\2080) and just get an XG Mobile station instead. It would make sense to get a base version X13 to offset some of the costs, considering I'd have a proper GPU at home and my laptop would be "extra portable" without the power consumption of a dGPU, but sadly, ASUS doesn't make base models with 32gb of ram. BTW, does AIDA64 work for you? Asking because I get a BSOD whenever I mess around with it and it tries to fetch some system data, and the error seems to be driver related. Can you run the memory benchmark? * The ZP14 having "pen support" without being able to rotate at least 180 deg really doesn't help at all, and the version with the dual screens costs an arm and a leg)

Luckily the x16 doesn't need cooling mods like this to get great performance, it's a really nice machine with great cooling out of the box. Foil tape is made to stay put in situations with heat changes. Never used it like this, but I've used it on motorcycles and it never comes loose as long as you make sure the surface you are putting in on is clean and dry.
It's a mystery to me how those two fans can sound like they're blowing like crazy like tiny hairdryers, but when you feel the exhaust vents there's almost no air coming out.
